With amazing stats, strong attacks, utility moves, and a useful defensive typing, Eternatus can be the cornerstone of a difficult-to-break defensive team without entirely sacrificing a team's offensive presence. Even uninvested, its base 145 Special Attack provides meaningful damage when paired with STAB moves. Toxic Spikes provide an advantage to Eternatus's team by limiting a lot of defensive counterplay to its offensive teammates or necessitating turns spent removing the entry hazard, while Recover allows it to extend its longevity significantly. Fire Blast is super effective against Steel-types like Necrozma-DM, Excadrill, and Iron Treads, which resist Eternatus's STAB moves. Meteor Beam offers super effective coverage against various Fire- and Flying-types and gives Eternatus a power boost for the rest of its moves. Tera Dragon allows Eternatus to survive Earthquake from the likes of defensive Great Tusk and defensive Landorus-T and boosts the power of Dynamax Cannon, allowing it to OHKO the Urshifu formes and 2HKO offensive Great Tusk that received a base Special Defense stat up to 130 at +0. Alternatively, Tera Fire allows Fire Blast to OHKO the aforementioned Steel-types after a Meteor Beam boost. A set with Life Orb and Recover over Meteor Beam offers Eternatus more longevity compared to Power Herb sets. Power Herb sets, however, allow Eternatus to use Meteor Beam immediately without taking damage from Life Orb, but Eternatus can only do this once before switching out. Eternatus has one of the highest Speed stats of any god in the metagame, making it a great donor for receivers like Urshifu-S and Landorus-T, which all give special walls a hard time. Eternatus also possesses exceptional Special Attack, which is great for fast attackers like Hisuian Electrode and Greninja or setup sweepers like Nasty Plot Landorus and Calm Mind Comfey, which, in tandem with Eternatus, can overwhelm special walls. Eternatus also possesses a massive HP stat, which can be utilized to great effect by defensive teammates like Rotom-W, Skarmory, and Sinistcha. Setup sweepers like Iron Defense Zamazenta, Calm Mind Iron Crown, and Nasty Plot Darkrai can also use the extra HP to set up more easily. Eternatus struggles to break through walls that can weather its STAB moves and don't care about Fire Blast such as Ting-Lu, Heatran, and Assault Vest Galarian Slowking, so teammates that pressure these Pokemon like Ogerpon-W, as well as the aforementioned Landorus-T and Urshifu-S, are extremely appreciated. Finally, Eternatus appreciates entry hazards from the likes of Great Tusk, Skarmory, and Landorus-T to help it get KOs more easily.

Eternatus gets worn down fairly easily by Life Orb recoil and hazards, so it heavily appreciates teammates that remove hazards such as Regieleki and the aforementioned Great Tusk as well as Sablenite users like Garganacl and Milotic. Arceus formes like Arceus-Ghost, Arceus-Fairy, and Arceus-Water also make excellent partners, helping to handle potential revenge killers such as Iron Crown and Extreme Speed users while posing major threats themselves with Calm Mind.

It consistently checks prominent Extreme Speed users, including Altarianite Regieleki, Dragonite, Hisuian Arcanine, and Entei, as well as other physical wallbreakers like Urshifu-R and Zamazenta. Both its STAB moves, Sludge Bomb and Dynamax Cannon, are highly spammable and devastating; the former, in particular, threatens Altarianite users and applies pressure to defensive foes with its high poison chance. Heavy-Duty Boots is a reasonable choice to prevent entry hazard chip damage on Eternatus, while Black Sludge offers some passive recovery. The Speed EVs enable Eternatus to outspeed Hearthflame Mask Great Tusk and bulky variants of the Arceus formes. Eternatus fits well on bulky offense and balance teams. Non-Heavy-Duty Boots variants are susceptible to hazards and greatly benefit from hazard removers like Great Tusk, Regieleki, Mandibuzz, and Corviknight. Hazard setters like Garganacl, Magearna, Clodsire, and Great Tusk, combined with Eternatus's own chip damage, effectively wear down multiple threats such as Urshifu-R, Hisuian Arcanine, Zamazenta, and the Arceus formes. Ground-type checks, such as Ho-Oh, Arceus-Water, and Milotic, are valuable teammates for covering one of Eternatus's biggest weaknesses. Ho-Oh can also threaten Magearna, which is one of Eternatus's biggest checks. Eternatus pairs well with teammates such as Urshifu-R, Raging Bolt, and Zamazenta by providing them with free switches against Pixilate Extreme Speed users.

Eternatus is an excellent blanket check to Kyogre, defensive Ho-Oh, Arceus-Water, and Arceus-Fairy that pressures opposing teams with Toxic Spikes and Toxic. Toxic Spikes is one of Eternatus's greatest assets, as it weakens the opposing defensive core and especially overwhelms hyper offense teams because it quickly chips down their sweepers due to them not having a way to remove it. Fire Blast or Flamethrower can be used instead to threaten Steel-types such as Zacian-C, Necrozma-DM, and Kingambit, with the former guaranteeing a 2HKO on Zacian-C and having a chance to OHKO it in sun and the latter providing more consistent damage at the cost of reduced firepower. However, this means dropping Toxic Spikes, which makes spreading poison much more difficult. Dynamax Cannon is Eternatus's preferred STAB move, but Draco Meteor can be run instead, trading consistency for the ability to OHKO both Koraidon and Miraidon. The given EV spread allows Eternatus to outspeed maximum Speed Kyogre and survive offensive Arceus-Ground's Earthquake from full HP. Tera Fairy allows Eternatus it to block Miraidon's Draco Meteor and Koraidon's Scale Shot or Outrage in an emergency but makes it more vulnerable to Steel-type attacks from Zacian-C and Kingambit and Flare Blitz from Koraidon. Tera Steel gives it valuable resistances to Kyogre's Ice Beam, Calyrex-I's Glacial Lance, Arceus's Extreme Speed, Arceus-Fairy's Judgment, and Psychic-type moves from Calyrex-S. Although, using Tera Steel makes Eternatus weak to Fire-type attacks such as Flare Blitz and Sacred Fire from Koraidon and Ho-Oh, respectively, as well as Koraidon's Low Kick and Zacian-C's Close Combat. Tera Dark is another option, albeit niche, that may be used to improve a team's matchup against Calyrex-S, but it makes Eternatus weak to Arceus-Fairy's Judgment and Koraidon's Low Kick. All three Tera types also reduce Eternatus's ability to check Kyogre and Ho-Oh, so the user must be wary before committing to Terastallizing. Eternatus fits on more passive balance and bulky offense teams that appreciate its ability to act as both a Toxic Spikes absorber and spreader that can take on threats like Kyogre, Ho-Oh, Arceus-Water, and Arceus-Fairy. Koraidon and Miraidon are both excellent partners, as the former can threaten Steel-type Pokemon, and the latter helps to break bulky Ground-types such as Ting-Lu and Arceus-Ground. In return, Eternatus helps check Kyogre and puts their checks, such as bulky Arceus formes and Ting-Lu, on a timer with poison. They both also appreciate Eternatus's ability to soak up status effects, and Koraidon in particular enjoys Eternatus reliably switching into defensive Arceus formes like Arceus-Fairy and Ho-Oh. Eternatus is vulnerable to Koraidon and Miraidon, which force it out with strong Dragon-type attacks, so Pokemon that can check them such as Ho-Oh, Arceus-Fairy, and Ting-Lu also make good teammates. Ting-Lu also helps Eternatus by switching into Calyrex-S, which can deal massive damage to Eternatus with its Psychic-type moves or lock it into Toxic Spikes or Recover via Encore. If Eternatus isn't running Fire Blast or Flamethrower, it is incapable of hitting Steel-types like Zacian-C, Necrozma-DM, and Kingambit, so Ground-types that force them out like Arceus-Ground and Landorus-T are also recommended. Arceus-Water can check the aforementioned Steel-types and Koraidon, as well as switching into Calyrex-I, Arceus-Ground, and Extreme Killer Arceus. Arceus helps to check Calyrex-S and benefits from Eternatus weakening the opposing defensive structure so it can clean up late-game. Dynamax Cannon is Eternatus’s STAB move of choice, with consistent damage output to net crucial 2HKOs against many defensive targets. This allows Eternatus to pressure foes such as Primal Groudon, Yveltal, and Zygarde; after one layer of Spikes, opposing Eternatus and support Arceus formes are brought into OHKO and 2HKO range respectively. Sludge Bomb threatens Arceus-Fairy with major damage while crippling targets with its valuable poison chance, making switch-ins such as Ho-Oh unable to stave off repeated blows long-term. If such targets are well-handled by its teammates, Toxic Spikes can instead be used to punish switches by setting grounded threats like Lunala, Primal Groudon, and Primal Kyogre on a timer. Fire Blast decimates Steel-types attempting to switch into its STAB moves, notably OHKOing Zacian-C and 2HKOing defensive Necrozma-DM after a layer of Spikes, while blasting apart Ferrothorn without the need for entry hazards. Recover takes advantage of forced switches to reliably heal Eternatus from chip damage and Life Orb recoil, allowing it to switch out and remain healthy enough to wallbreak at a later point in the match. Tera Dragon launches Dynamax Cannon to new heights, letting Eternatus 2HKO Ho-Oh, Primal Kyogre, and Tera Water or Poison Zygarde as well as OHKOing most offensive Primal Groudon variants after Stealth Rock. Tera Dragon secondarily sheds crucial weaknesses to Ground and Psychic, allowing Eternatus to take on threats such as Arceus-Ground, Primal Groudon, and an unboosted Ultra Necrozma at the cost of becoming vulnerable to Toxic. Toxic serves as a potent tool for gradually wearing down Pokemon such as Calm Mind Primal Kyogre without Rest, Yveltal, and Arceus. Additionally, it ensures gradual damage against defensive Arceus formes lacking Refresh, Primal Groudon, and Ho-Oh. Sludge Bomb finds its primary utility in targeting Arceus-Fairy. Additionally, it offers the potential to poison Pokemon that are immune to Toxic Spikes, notably Ho-Oh and Giratina-O, which would otherwise clear entry hazards against Eternatus. Flamethrower acts as a countermeasure against Steel-types, such as Zacian-C and Necrozma-DM, that would attempt to take advantage of Eternatus, since they are immune to being poisoned. Alternatively, Mystical Fire serves a similar purpose by punishing Steel-types while also limiting Calm Mind Arceus formes. Combining Toxic with Toxic Spikes forms another viable strategy that affects all prevalent Defoggers immune to Toxic Spikes, making it easier to maintain entry hazards throughout the match. However, relying solely on these moves without coverage options can leave Eternatus vulnerable against Steel-types like Necrozma-DM, Zacian-C, and Ferrothorn. Leftovers is the preferred item to help Eternatus handle burns from Ho-Oh and mitigate the damage from attacks such as Ice Beam from Primal Kyogre and most attacks from Marshadow. Heavy-Duty Boots serves as a good alternative to avoid entry hazard damage, particularly if the team lacks Defoggers. Eternatus's EV spread enables it to outspeed a fully invested Yveltal while not being 2HKOed by specially offensive Yveltal's Dark Pulse and Choice Band Marshadow's Spectral Thief. An EV spread of 80 HP / 252 SpD / 176 Spe with a Timid nature makes it possible for Eternatus to outspeed fully invested Arceus formes while still not be 2HKOed by specially offensive Yveltal's Dark Pulse at the cost of physical bulk. An alternative spread of 40 HP / 252 Def / 216 Spe, which is faster than Marshadow, can deal with physical threats such as Ho-Oh, Marshadow, and Arceus. However, another dedicated wall is necessary to check specially offensive threats like Primal Kyogre and Arceus-Fairy. Tera Fairy enhances Eternatus's capability against Palkia-O, Life Orb Yveltal, Giratina-O, and Calm Mind Arceus-Dark, while Tera Water improves Eternatus's matchup against Necrozma-DM, Primal Groudon, and Arceus-Ground. Eternatus should freely switch into Yveltal and Ho-Oh lacking Thunder Wave and aim to set up Toxic Spikes to threaten Primal Groudon and defensive Arceus formes. It's best to reserve Terastallization as a last resort, since it compromises Eternatus's valuable Toxic immunity. Ho-Oh synergizes well with Eternatus, especially in the presence of Toxic Spikes, as it can phaze foes with Whirlwind and provides an immunity to Ground. Arceus-Dark is another good partner since it can deal with Necrozma-DM, which is immune to Toxic, and Mega Mewtwo Y. Zygarde-C is another excellent choice as a teammate, offering the ability to safely switch in against Primal Groudon and Marshadow. Additionally, a specially defensive Zygarde-C can utilize Glare against opposing Eternatus, ensuring that it maintains the speed advantage. Giratina is another valuable teammate that is capable of dealing with Primal Groudon. It also has Pressure, which significantly enhances the PP stall strategy when paired with Eternatus. When utilizing physically defensive Eternatus, it's crucial to include another Primal Kyogre check on the team, such as Primal Groudon, Ferrothorn, or Chansey. Ferrothorn can offer valuable entry hazard support by setting up Spikes and Stealth Rock, and it appreciates Eternatus switching in to handle Ho-Oh. Additionally, Chansey can effectively handle most special attackers and use Heal Bell to cure eventual paralysis on Eternatus, further increasing Eternatus's longevity throughout the match.

Meteor Beam Eternatus is one of the premier specially offensive Pokemon in the tier for hyper offense, leveraging its unique mixture of an excellent Speed tier, solid defensive traits, and great coverage. Eternatus is one of the fastest special threats in the tier while maintaining respectable bulk, making revenge killing it challenging. Additionally, as one of the few viable Poison-types in the tier, Eternatus provides a Toxic Spikes absorber for hyper offense teams. Meteor Beam provides Rock coverage to OHKO Ho-Oh and Yveltal, which are otherwise bothersome to remove. Given this, Meteor Beam should be reserved for these targets when possible. Tera Dragon additionally removes Eternatus's Ground and Psychic weaknesses, helping against the likes of Groudon, Zygarde, Ultra Necrozma, and Necrozma-DM. Please note that Ultra Necrozma's Light That Burns the Sky still OHKOes Eternatus after Terastallization, and Deoxys-A's Psycho Boost has a favorable roll to OHKO as well. Tera Fire also allows Eternatus to survive Zacian-C's +3 Behemoth Blade, Calyrex-I's +1 Glacial Lance, and Choice Band Chien-Pao's Ice Spinner. Meteor Beam Eternatus fits best on entry hazard stacking hyper offense teams capable of providing it the necessary hazard support to break through some of the walls in the tier. In turn, Eternatus offensively pressures every relevant Defogger with an OHKO unless they defensively Terastallize. However, a well-timed defensive Terastallization from the likes of Ho-Oh and Giratina-O can allow them to use Thunder Wave, crippling Eternatus's Speed and enabling them to use Defog after. Eternatus is also an effective mid-to-late-game cleaner due to its natural bulk, making it challenging to revenge kill. Eternatus also fits well on Sticky Web teams that allow it to outpace otherwise faster threats, but the lack of entry hazard damage reduces its effectiveness versus bulkier teams. Furthermore, Eternatus faces stiff competition from fellow Meteor Beam user Lunala, which can block Extreme Speed and Rapid Spin and has access to Psyshock. In addition to requiring Meteor Beam to OHKO Pokemon such as Ho-Oh and Yveltal, Eternatus is deceptively weak without the Special Attack boost. As such, it is often important to position Eternatus to commit to wallbreak or sweep lest the one-time use of Power Herb go to waste. In the event Eternatus is forced out after using Meteor Beam without making meaningful progress, Eternatus becomes far less threatening and is largely relegated to late-game cleaning or revenge killing. Despite being a powerful threat capable of brute forcing through many defensive staples, Meteor Beam Eternatus struggles considerably against stall due to its lack of longevity. Due to this, Eternatus should be paired with dedicated stallbreakers, wallbreakers, and teammates that otherwise fare better against such teams, such as offensive Yveltal with Knock Off, Chi-Yu, Dragon Dance Necrozma-DM, Meteor Beam Lunala, and Kyurem-B. Additionally, Eternatus uniquely absorbs Toxic and Toxic Spikes from opposing defensive Eternatus. Some common defensive checks to Eternatus include Calm Mind Arceus forms and Fezandipiti. Eternatus is additionally hard-walled by Chansey. Given this, Eternatus appreciates teammates that can punish them, such as Zacian-C and Necrozma-DM, and allies that can help overwhelm these shared checks such as wallbreaker Primal Kyogre, offensive Yveltal, and Meteor Beam Lunala.

Shuca Berry Eternatus fully maximizes its poison-spreading potential, being able to use Toxic and set Toxic Spikes on Primal Groudon and Arceus-Ground with relative safety after luring them in. Shuca Berry also comes with the added benefit of letting Eternatus check Choice Band Marshadow much more effectively, as once it is used, Poltergeist will be unable to hit it. This set still performs defensive Eternatus’ s standard roles effectively as a check to foes such as Calm Mind Arceus sets lacking Refresh and Yveltal, but it can struggle long term against Arceus-Fairy and Life Orb Yveltal due to being prone to being worn down without Leftovers or Heavy-Duty Boots. Furthermore, as it is unable to use both Dynamax Cannon and Flamethrower, it can be used as setup fodder for Zacian-C, Necrozma-DM, or opposing Eterrnatus depending on its choice. With Shuca Berry, Eternatus can safely stay in on Ground-types like Primal Groudon and use Toxic against it, and it also is key to pressuring Ho-Oh and defensive Arceus sets, letting Eternatus constantly set Toxic Spikes against them. Toxic also allows Eternatus to wear down Calm Mind Primal Kyogre and Zygarde, forcing them to use Rest more frequently. Toxic Spikes lets Eternatus put pressure on defensive Arceus formes, Primal Groudon, and Primal Kyogre, wearing them down and enabling its teammates to break through them more easily. Dynamax Cannon lets Eternatus directly hit Ground-types like Primal Groudon, Arceus-Ground, and Ho-Oh, and it most importantly dissuades opposing Eternatus from switching in and absorbing its Toxic Spikes. Flamethrower can be used if Necrozma-DM and Zacian-C are an issue to the team but makes the set less effective overall due to the lack of a STAB option, as it is harder to pressure Ho-Oh and Zygarde. The given EV spread allows Eternatus to avoid the 2HKO from Zygarde’s Thousand Arrows with Shuca Berry, avoid the 2HKO from Life Orb Yveltal’s Dark Pulse, and outspeed specially offensive Yveltal. Shuca Berry Eternatus works best early- to mid-game, as if it can lure Primal Groudon or Arceus-Ground with Toxic, it can start putting a lot of pressure on the opposing team. Using its item early is also the best case scenario when fighting a Marshadow so it can pivot into it without worry. Hard switching in Eternatus is often discouraged, as it can lose its Shuca Berry and be KOed after without being able to use Toxic or Dynamax Cannon. Toxic Spikes can easily be set up, as Eternatus can pressure all Defoggers by way of Toxic and Dynamax Cannon. This set works best on balance and bulky offense structures that appreciate Eternatus spreading poison on Ho-Oh and Primal Groudon, greatly cutting into their longevity. Shuca Berry Eternatus works best with teammates that greatly appreciate Ground-types being poisoned or KOed, such as Calm Mind Arceus-Water, Calm Mind Arceus-Fairy, and offensive Primal Groudon. Eternatus is easily worn down by entry hazards, so teammates that can remove them like Ho-Oh, Yveltal, and Giratina-O are great partners. Eternatus must be paired with good Zacian-C and Necrozma-DM checks if running Dynamax Cannon, so defensive Primal Groudon and Zygarde-C are good teammates. If running Flamethrower, then teams must have a way to pressure or take advantage of opposing Eternatus such as Choice Band Marshadow or offensive Yveltal.

This amalgamation of offensive and defensive traits provides valuable role compression for many bulky offense and balance teams, which appreciate Eternatus's consistency against both offensive and defensive playstyles. Recover provides Eternatus immense flexibility relative to other offensive sets. Eternatus often finds turns to use Recover on the switches it forces or against more passive Pokemon that struggle to meaningfully damage it such as Ho-Oh, Ferrothorn, or Yveltal attempting to KO with Sucker Punch. Eternatus can also Terastallize in a pinch to remove its Ground weakness against Pokemon aiming to revenge kill it such as Primal Groudon and Arceus-Ground. Eternatus's newfound Dragon immunity also helps against Giratina-O, Palkia-O, and opposing Eternatus. Eternatus tends to enter the battle mid-game against defensive Pokemon such as Ho-Oh, utility Arceus-Fairy, and Ferrothorn. Eternatus can use these as an opportunity to boost, wallbreak, or both. It does not need to micromanage its health, as it often finds opportunities to use Recover against defensive Pokemon, so it is capable of sponging a hit beyond what is required in order to set up. Eternatus also has a great matchup into stall teams, as Chansey is often left with too little PP to stave off other special attackers such as Primal Kyogre after dealing with Eternatus thanks to Pressure. Alomomola is a fantastic teammate for Eternatus thanks to its ability to provide a slow pivot into Pokemon that Eternatus can beat but is otherwise hesitant to switch directly into, such as Zygarde and defensive Eternatus. Zygarde is also an excellent partner for Eternatus, as it is the tier's best blanket physical wall to handle Pokemon such as Primal Groudon and Tera Blast Ground Zacian-C. Zygarde's paralysis support also enables Eternatus to easily revenge kill Pokemon such as Zacian-C and Ultra Necrozma with minimal risk. Choice Band Marshadow can handle the few specially defensive Pokemon that Eternatus struggles with such as Calm Mind Arceus formes and defensive Primal Kyogre. Zacian-C is another option, which handles Calm Mind Arceus formes that can otherwise use Eternatus for setup fodder.

Choice Specs Eternatus serves as a more specialized variant that aims to fully capitalize on its offensive potential as a wallbreaker with ample opportunity to outpace and cleave through prominent defensive cores over the course of a game. It successfully combines the unresisted coverage of the Power Herb variants and packs more immediate power while lacking the recoil of Life Orb, giving it a distinct niche. The ability to include Sludge Bomb is one of this set's most appealing traits, giving Eternatus a strong secondary STAB move to heavily threaten Tera Fairy Zygarde, IronPress Garganacl, and Arceus-Fairy. Additionally, its poison chance can prove vital in overpowering the likes of setup sweepers such as Calm Mind Arceus-Dark and defensive pivots such as Ho-Oh, which can otherwise outheal the damage dished out. Fire Blast provides important coverage against Steel-types such as Zacian-C, Necrozma-DM, and Ferrothorn. It is used over Flamethrower due to its higher Base Power that allows Eternatus to OHKO Zacian-C. The secondary option of Draco Meteor serves as another major draw behind this set. The immediate power offered by Draco Meteor allows Eternatus to KO important targets that Dynamax Cannon would otherwise come up short against, such as weakened Ho-Oh, Calm Mind Arceus formes and Alomomola, freeing it from the need to Terastallize against them. Being able to outright remove these Pokemon at designated HP thresholds, rather than letting them hang on by a thread, can mean the difference between their continued persistence and permanently removing them to the benefit of Eternatus's teammates later in the match. In return, these Pokemon can greatly assist with more offensive teams that might give Eternatus trouble wallbreaking, such as against hyper offense structures loaded with miscellaneous offensive threats such as Dragon Dance Mega Salamence and Rock Polish Primal Groudon that can outspeed and OHKO Eternatus after setting up. Eternatus greatly detests the presence of entry hazards such as Stealth Rock and Spikes, which are set by common Pokemon such as Primal Groudon and Ferrothorn and heavily cut into its longevity. Teammates that can help manage these factors consist of Defog users such as Ho-Oh, Giratina-O, and Mega Salamence, which can reliably remove these conditions throughout the match. Without proper prediction, Eternatus has trouble breaking through teams that carry multiple Pokemon with appropriate resistances to its moves such as Zacian-C, Fezandipiti, and Arceus-Ground, which can take advantage of it being Choice-locked when paired with pivots like Ho-Oh that can safely scout it. As such, checks such as defensive Primal Groudon, defensive Primal Kyogre, and Ho-Oh are necessary to provide a safety net against these Pokemon and minimize the degree to which Eternatus is punished. Zacian-C in particular is a notable threat, as it is fully immune to both of Eternatus's STAB types and can both outspeed and set up Swords Dance against it. As a result, Eternatus also occasionally appreciates being paired with revenge killers such as Ditto and Choice Scarf Yveltal. Lastly, as Eternatus prefers not to directly switch into targets such as offensive Ho-Oh, Arceus-Dark, and Giratina-O, which can often cripple it with status, pivots such as defensive Yveltal, Landorus-T, and Alomomola are strong teammates that can help Eternatus get onto the field safely against these Pokemon.
