Chansey Movesets & Competitive Sets

Chansey is one of the bulkier walls by virtue of high HP and Eviolite, walling many prominent special attackers such as Primarina, Magnezone, and Volcanion. Toxic helps dispatch threats that can heal up on Chansey such as defensive Arcanine, Roost Kyurem, and non-Rest Togekiss. Soft-Boiled helps to keep Chansey at high HP while slowly whittling down the foe with the combination of Seismic Toss and Toxic. While Chansey's physical bulk is not nearly as good as its special bulk, the given EV investment allows for its to be as physically bulky as possible, giving it the best chance to survive a hit from Choice item Haxorus, Choice Scarf Galarian Darmanitan, and non-Swords Dance Landorus-Therian, to OHKO them with Counter. Charm is an option over Counter to handle physical attackers that would like to set up on Chansey such as Shell Smash Crustle, Swords Dance Landorus-Therian, and non-Taunt Bulk Up Zeraora. Charm should be used to PP stall and negate boosts from the foe's setup moves to a point where any combination of Chansey's moves will win. Do note that replacing Counter with Charm usually results in losing matchups against Choice Band users such as Landorus-Therian and Choice Band Zeraora, which can 2HKO Chansey through Charm. Chansey is taken advantage of by Choice item attackers with Trick such as Cresselia, Porygon-Z, and Tapu Fini. Toxic can assist in dealing certain anti-stall measures such as Encore and Trick Togekiss and some Fake Tears Sylveon. Versus Sylveon it is optimal to use Toxic on the first turn, then Seismic Toss, then Soft-Boiled, and finally Seismic Toss to avoid being KOed by Hyper Beam at -6. Good teammates for Chansey are attackers that don't care about Trick and are able to retaliate, such as Assault Vest or Choice item Metagross and Aromatisse. Chansey also doesn't appreciate faster Taunt users such as Spectrier and Corviknight, as they PP stall Chansey and slowly chip it down. Good partners that alleviate this weakness include Choice Scarf Galarian Darminatan and Zeraora.

Chansey relies on its bulk to switch in to many special threats such as Kyogre, Eternatus, and Calyrex-S. Teleport lets Chansey generate momentum and allows frail-but-strong teammates such as Marshadow, Rayquaza, and Mewtwo to be brought in safely. Instead of Teleport, Chansey can use Stealth Rock, putting pressure on defensive threats like Kyogre, Eternatus, and Xerneas, which facilitates wallbreaking later in the game. Healing Wish fully heals a partner who lacks recovery or has been crippled by status, including Necrozma-DM, Groudon, and Zekrom. Toxic should only be used on stall teams, as it gives up momentum but cripples common switch-ins such as Marshadow, Groudon, Zekrom, and Yveltal by putting them on a timer. Seismic Toss's fixed damage is useful to soften switch-ins, and it helps Chansey not be completely useless against Taunt users. Eviolite is a mandatory item on Chansey, boosting its already high special bulk and granting it decent physical bulk. Chansey pairs well with suicide leads like Froslass, Aerodactyl, and Cloyster on hyper offense teams, as they can set up Stealth Rock or Spikes while keeping momentum. It also appreciates strong attackers like Calyrex-S, Rayquaza, and Zekrom which can use the momentum Chansey provides to immensely pressure the opposing team. Strong Dark-type attackers like specially offensive Yveltal and Swords Dance Weavile appreciate Chansey's ability to switch in on Eternatus and, in return, provide secondary Calyrex-S checks, which is highly appreciated on hyper offense teams. Also, Chansey remains relatively fragile on the physical side, so attackers that are decently physically bulky such as Groudon and Zygarde are greatly appreciated teammates. On stall teams, Chansey is greatly appreciated for its ability to freely switch into Ghost-type attacks from Calyrex-S, as well as taking special attacks from foes such as specially defensive Eternatus, defensive Xerneas, and Lunala. Since Chansey is easily worn down by entry hazards, reliable Defoggers such as Yveltal, Ho-Oh, and Giratina are welcomed to support it. The latter two are especially appreciated, as they keep Necrozma-DM and Ferrothorn in check, which are the most common Stealth Rock and Spikes setters, respectively. Despite its high special bulk, Chansey cannot check Choice Specs Kyogre, as it is 2HKOed by Water Spout and can easily lose to Substitute + Calm Mind variants. It should be paired with checks to Kyogre such as Eternatus, which can also act as a Knock Off absorber.

Chansey is a defensive staple on Normal-type teams thanks to its massive HP and Special Defense stats along with Eviolite and its various amounts of utility. One of these forms of utility is its access to Stealth Rock, which can allow it to assist its teammates by chipping down opposing threats, making it easier to revenge kill them. Seismic Toss allows Chansey to not be completely passive, which lets it wear down opposing special attackers very quickly and break most Substitutes. These two moves paired with the amazing recovery of Soft-Boiled allow Chansey to wear down types that rely on their special attackers, namely Electric, Poison, and Psychic. Teleport can be used on its last slot to help Chansey act as a great pivot and get its offensive teammates in safely, or it can use Toxic to put opposing offensive Pokemon on a timer and make it harder for your opponent to keep them in. Its ability in Natural Cure also allows it to absorb status ailments for its offensive teammates and works well with Teleport when scouting for status moves. Chansey invests its EVs in bulk and Defense so that it can take physical hits better, especially from weaker revenge killers like Choice Scarf Excadrill. Every other Pokemon on Normal appreciates Chansey's ability to wall special attackers like Hydreigon, Indeedee-M, and Hatterene. Offensive Pokemon like Indeedee-M, Diggersby, Bewear, Obstagoon, and Heliolisk especially appreciate its Teleport support, as they can immediately threaten the opposing team with their dangerous power once switched in. Indeedee-M can force out dangerous Fighting-types like Conkeldurr and Keldeo with a Choice Scarf while also breaking down opposing walls like Toxapex and Amoonguss thanks to Expanding Force's power. Diggersby, Obstagoon, and Bewear coming in for free can also be a huge boon against opposing bulky teams, as they give most defensive cores in the game a very hard time. Heliolisk also appreciates Teleport pivoting greatly, as it can threaten to KO Keldeo, which is a massive threat to Chansey thanks to its Secret Sword and also has a great matchup against opposing Water-type teams. Outside of Teleport, Porygon2 is Chansey's preferred partner thanks to its ability to wear down physical attackers and complete the Eviolite defensive core. This physical wall appreciates Chansey's ability to wear down special attackers that threaten Porygon2, and in return it walls the physical attackers like Mimikyu that threaten Chansey. Ditto is also a great Pokemon on Normal that can beat out certain setup sweepers or wallbreakers that try to take advantage of Chansey's passive nature, such as Dragon Dance Tyranitar and Shell Smash Cloyster.

Seismic Toss deals static damage to most of the tier, allowing Chansey to wear down Pokemon like Naganadel and Landorus. Toxic is helpful for wearing down bulkier Pokemon and setup sweepers like Dragon Dance Kyurem-B and Porygon2. Stealth Rock punishes Pokemon like Rillaboom and Incineroar for switching into Chansey, causing them to get worn down more quickly. Soft-Boiled allows Chansey to make use of its great bulk from Eviolite and outlast most Pokemon when Toxic is in play, allowing it to potentially win games on its own in some situations. Natural Cure prevents status from sticking to Chansey given it can switch out, which makes it significantly harder to wear down. Healer cannot remove status from Chansey but can remove status from its teammates if Chansey is on the field, which is particularly helpful for setup sweepers like Cosmic Power Mew that operate at a slower pace. Maximum Speed investment allows Chansey to outrun several Pokemon such as Incineroar and Volcanion, letting it either hit them with Toxic or heal before they can act.

Chansey is a premier choice on stall teams thanks to its ability to take on most special attackers in the metagame such as Ash-Greninja, Mega Charizard Y, and Mega Latias, alongside its useful ability in Natural Cure allowing it to act as a status sponge for its teammates. Soft-Boiled is Chansey's best recovery option and is needed in order to check what it needs to over the course of the game. Seismic Toss lets Chansey deal consistent damage, allowing it to be less passive against Pokemon like Mega Charizard Y and Ash-Greninja. Toxic cripples most switch-ins, especially those that don't mind taking Seismic Toss much, such as Slowbro and Roost Mega Latias. Aromatherapy is an option if the team already has a Stealth Rock setter or doesn't need Toxic on Chansey to check the aforementioned threats, allowing Chansey to act as a cleric by removing status inflictions. The EV spread maximizes Chansey's physical bulk, allowing it to take less damage from Psyshock and Pursuit users, such as Tapu Lele and Weavile, respectively. Since Chansey's passivity limits it to stall teams, staples of this playstyle are naturally good partners. Skarmory and Corviknight have good defensive synergy with Chansey, as they are able to check the physical attackers that can threaten it, such as Mega Lopunny, Garchomp, and Mega Mawile. They can both remove entry hazards for Chansey or, in Skarmory's case, form an entry hazard stacking core with Spikes. In return, Chansey can check special attackers that force them out like Mega Charizard Y, Ash-Greninja, and Tapu Koko. It also can absorb Scald burns for them. Unaware users like Quagsire and Clefable enjoy the cleric and status absorber support Chansey provides to them, while they can check Pokemon that could try to turn Chansey into setup fodder like Gengar. They also appreciate Chansey wearing the opposing team down thanks to Toxic and Stealth Rock if they are running Curse or Calm Mind, respectively, allowing them to win late-game. Clefable also can free up a slot for Chansey by running Aromatherapy itself. Mega Sableye is also a good teammate for Chansey, since it is able to sponge Knock Off for it, bounce back Taunt and entry hazards, and check Mega Medicham, while Chansey can check certain specially offensive Pokemon that threaten Mega Sableye, such as Tapu Koko and Choice Specs Kyurem.

With only one weakness and high Eviolite-boosted special bulk, Chansey is a staple on stall teams, capable of checking the likes of Xerneas, non-Choice Specs Kyogre, and offensive Eternatus. Its amazing ability in Natural Cure also allows it to act as a status absorber for its team. Aromatherapy allows Chansey to act as a cleric, and its bulk gives it many chances to use this move in longer games. Toxic or Seismic Toss is used to inflict damage; Toxic cripples Yveltal and annoys Kyogre lacking Rest, while Seismic Toss can chip Zacian-C switch-ins, break Geomancy Xerneas’s Substitute, and let Chansey stay in against Taunt Yveltal. Confide is used to check Calm Mind Kyogre and Xerneas. Investment in Special Defense helps Chansey stomach hits from Xerneas and Kyogre, and Defense investment is imperative for Aromatherapy, giving Chansey far more chances to use it on weaker physical Pokemon like Ho-Oh and Zygarde-C. Chansey is best used on stall and bulky balance teams, as it is extremely passive but can reliably counter opposing Xerneas, offensive Eternatus, and non-Choice Specs Kyogre. Having solid defensive partners helps to scout opposing Pokemon’s movesets, especially for Knock Off, allowing it to come in more safely. In stall teams, Chansey should be paired with physically bulky Pokemon, such as Quagsire and Giratina; Quagsire greatly appreciates Aromatherapy and can switch into most physical setup sweepers, as well as Zacian-C, and Giratina is especially useful as a partner due to Pressure stifling entry hazard setters such as Ferrothorn. On balance teams, Necrozma-DM is an excellent partner due to being an easy to fit check to most physical attackers; Chansey, in return, checks most special attackers. Rest users, such as Zygarde-C and bulky Kyogre, greatly benefit from Aromatherapy. As Chansey switches often, it gets chipped by hazards, which, with time, can hinder its ability to aid its teammates and heal; Defoggers such as Ho-Oh and Giratina are greatly appreciated.

Chansey serves both as a special wall and a slow pivot thanks to its titanic, Eviolite-boosted special bulk and Teleport. With Magic Guard, it avoids passive damage from both entry hazards and status moves like Toxic and, paired with Soft-Boiled, ensures that Chansey can switch into and wall dangerous foes like Primordial Sea Inteleon and Zapdos. Seismic Toss is Chansey's preferred attack, as the fixed damage is Chansey's best option to deal direct damage. There are a number of options for Chansey's last moveslot based on team need and preference. Toxic quickly wears down other walls and setup sweepers. Thunder Wave cripples opposing fast offensive threats, helping your own team outspeed and KO them. Stealth Rock provides passive damage and takes advantage of free turns; since all common entry hazard removers can switch into Chansey, it is a generally poor setter, but can be better than nothing. A Bold nature and maximum investment in Defense and HP, alongside the boost from Eviolite, helps Chansey's naturally low physical bulk and sets it apart from Blissey. Chansey easily fits on bulky offense and balance teams, as it can comfortably wall most special attackers and still generate momentum for its teammates. It pairs well with offensively-oriented teammates who are unable to take hits from faster special attackers and appreciate its ability to pivot them in with Teleport, such as Garchomp, Terrakion, and Galarian Zapdos. Even when physically invested, Chansey prefers not to take physical attacks and likes having teammates like Dauntless Shield Mew and Intimidate Corviknight that can withstand them instead. It also appreciates Pokemon that can easily absorb Knock Off, such as Tapu Fini, in order to preserve its Eviolite. In general, teams that have poor entry hazard control appreciate Magic Guard Chansey as a pivot, since it ignores entry hazard damage. Lastly, Chansey's ability to function as a bulky pivot without Regenerator leaves both slots available for the rest of the team, making it easier to fit offensive Regenerator users like Garchomp.

Imposter Chansey's ability to transform into opposing Pokemon offers all kinds of utility on balance and stall. Chansey's mere presence can deter attempts at setup, as Chansey is able to to switch in on setup sweepers, beat them with its superior bulk, and sweep the rest of their team. Chansey can scout the moveset and ability of whatever it transforms into, making it excellent for identifying opposing wincons. When transformed, Chansey gains 20 PP that it can freely expend, making it useful for PP stalling in longer games. In addition to scaring out offensive threats, Chansey is capable of copying a foe's utility moves, such as Spikes and Rapid Spin. Eviolite makes Chansey even bulkier, enhancing its anti-offense capabilities. Shed Shell prevents Chansey from being trapped by Anchor Shot and subsequently PP stalled. Toxic Orb lets Chansey exploit Poison Heal Pokemon, such as Xerneas and Regigigas, as the recovery increases Chansey's longevity and lets it beat them 1v1. Chansey's moves and nature aren't relevant when transformed, meaning Chansey can dedicate its entire moveset to Imposter-proofing teammates. Chansey's immense Special bulk lets it Imposter-proof Special attackers like Xerneas and Eternatus, running moves that shut down or make progress against opposing Imposter Pokemon, such as Topsy Turvy and Nuzzle. Passive Magic Bounce and Prankster Pokemon, such as Giratina and Registeel, appreciate Chansey's ability to deter setup. Chansey's scouting abilities greatly benefit setup sweepers and entry hazard setters like Spikes Regigigas and Nasty Plot Eternatus, as they need to know when they're free to set up and set hazards. Chansey appreciates entry hazard support, as they wear down the opponent's Imposter-proofers, allowing Chansey to better threaten reverse sweeps. Chansey tends to get worn down quickly, as the offensive threats it transforms into will often lack significant recovery. As such, slow pivots like Zygarde-C and Kyogre and entry hazard removers like Pixilate Xerneas are useful for limiting the amount of unnecessary damage Chansey takes. Opponents will often try to counter Chansey with Knock Off or Nuzzle, so Poison Heal users, which can switch into these with little risk, are greatly appreciated.

Owing to its phenomenal health and Eviolite-boosted special bulk, Chansey is the premier special wall in the AG metagame checking the threatening special attackers in the tier, such as Xerneas, special sets of Yveltal, Primal Kyogre, Eternatus, and Calm Mind Arceus formes, by threatening them with Toxic or neutering their Special Attack boosts with Confide. Along with having spectacular special bulk, Chansey has access to an amazing ability in Natural Cure, allowing it to switch into any status move with impunity, and recovery in the form of Soft-Boiled, allowing it to regain health throughout the match. In addition, Chansey is capable of whittling down the health of the opponent’s Pokemon through Toxic, which also ensures that Toxic-susceptible wallbreakers such as Rayquaza, Yveltal and Primal Groudon cannot switch in without risking status. Heal Bell enables Chansey to support its team throughout the match by removing their status, greatly benefiting the bulkier teams on which it is often seen. Confide allows Chansey to stall out opposing special attackers that might otherwise boost past it, such as Calm Mind Primal Kyogre, Geomancy Xerneas, Calm Mind Arceus formes, and occasionally Yveltal and Eternatus. Seismic Toss can be run over either Toxic or Confide in order to reduce Chansey's weakness to Taunt and to chip Ferrothorn and Necrozma-DM. It is, however, generally inadvised, as forgoing Toxic prevents Chansey from effectively checking special attackers with recovery, while running Seismic Toss over Confide renders Chansey setup bait for Pokemon that can boost their special attack and are not crippled by Toxic, notably Calm Mind + Refresh Arceus formes and Rest Primal Kyogre. Chansey's extreme passivity also makes it easily trapped by Pokemon such as Gothitelle and Mega Gengar. In addition, its inability to damage Steel-types or bypass Substitute renders it setup bait for Pokemon such as Zacian-C, Necrozma-DM, and Zygarde-C. Chansey’s pitiful physical bulk makes it vulnerable to any physical moves from even defensive Pokemon. Chansey also suffers greatly from having its Eviolite removed through Knock Off and being afflicted with the occasional Taunt from Yveltal. Chansey is extremely passive, and so it most commonly sees use on stall or bulky balance teams. Chansey partners especially well with Lugia and Necrozma-DM, which can fend off many physical attackers. Chansey also partners well with Pokemon such as support Arceus formes and Rest users such as Primal Groudon or Zygarde-C, which can help fight off threats such as Zacian, Mega Rayquaza, and Dragon Dance Zygarde. Chansey is also useful in removing crippling status such as burn or paralysis from sweepers, making it a strong pick on semi-stall teams that appreciate cleric support.

Moves Soft-Boiled allows Chansey to stay healthy and check special attackers it is tasked to handle. Heal Bell cures teammates' status conditions, which is especially helpful if Chansey is paired with teammates such as Giratina and defensive Tyranitar that rely on Rest to restore health. Toxic lets Chansey punish threats like support Arceus formes, Primal Groudon, Primal Kyogre, and Geomancy Xerneas, should they try taking advantage of Chansey's passivity, by putting them on a timer. The last moveslot is flexible depending on the rest of the team. Wish lets Chansey keep teammates like Primal Groudon, Giratina and any Pokemon that does not have a reliable form of recovery, and thanks to Chansey's high HP stat, it often ends up restoring most of their health. Confide lets Chansey prevail against Calm Mind Kyogre, Z-Geomancy Xerneas, and Refresh Calm Mind Arceus formes, which would otherwise use it as setup fodder. The move also bypasses Substitute, meaning Chansey can check the former even if it has Substitute up. Seismic Toss is another move that can be opted for, letting Chansey do consistent damage to Steel-types and break Substitutes. Chansey can use Stealth Rock as well, but forgoing Wish keeps Chansey from effectively keeping its teammates healthy, and forgoing Confide means Chansey can no longer handle Refresh Calm Mind Arceus formes and Z-Geomancy Xerneas, both of which are formidable threats to defensive teams. Set Details It is more efficient to invest EVs into Defense and Special Defense, since Chansey already has a very high HP stat. Eviolite further increases Chansey's already impressive bulk. 252 Defense EVs along with a Bold nature let Chansey take two Precipice Blades from defensive Primal Groudon and two Sunsteel Strikes from defensive Necrozma-DM if necessary. A Calm nature is another option that lets Chansey escape 2HKOs from +1 Primal Kyogre's Origin Pulse and +2 Xerneas's Focus Blast. If this nature is opted for, Chansey should be paired with defensive roadblocks like Giratina. Natural Cure is the best ability for Chansey, letting it cure itself of status upon switching out without spending a turn to use Heal Bell. Usage Tips Chansey should be switched into special attackers, such as most Arceus formes, Xerneas, Primal Kyogre, Kyurem-W, and Lunala. Thanks to its significant Special bulk, Chansey can handle most damage from said threats if they are unboosted. Switching Chansey into predicted status moves is a promising idea; Chansey can absorb Toxic from the likes of Arceus formes and Lugia thanks to Natural Cure curing said status upon switching. Chansey should focus on spreading status if given the opportunity to switch in by using Toxic on support Arceus formes and defensive Primal Groudon. This is especially important regarding the fact that they are premier users of and Defog and Stealth Rock, respectively, and entry hazards are something that passive team relies on quite a lot to wear down foes. Soft-Boiled should be used as often as possible, since Chansey has to be near full health to check Xerneas and Primal Kyogre. Heal Bell should be used under consideration, since it has only 8 PP, especially if the battle is going to be long enough for status moves to be a significant factor in winning. Chansey should avoid Mega Gengar, Gothitelle, and Dugtrio by any means necessary, since once Chansey is trapped, it will be removed. Until said trappers are removed, Chansey should refrain from switching in recklessly, since double switching is dangerous for Chansey even when paired with dedicated Pursuit trapper. Team Options Due to Chansey's passivity, it is usually fit on semi-stall and stall teams, though it can also justify use on balance teams. A dedicated Pursuit trapper is mandatory to keep Chansey safe from Mega Gengar, and in this aspect, Marshadow and Tyranitar are great partners. The former weakens or KOes Mega Gengar, Gothitelle, and Dugtrio with Pursuit while forcing them out and makes up for Chansey's passivity with its offensive presence, while the latter has more defensive presence by acting as a check to Ho-Oh and Mega Mewtwo Y and also provides Stealth Rock support. Mega Sableye is able to switch into Celesteela and Ferrothorn, which would otherwise use Leech Seed on Chansey and recover themselves. Mega Sableye also does a great job controlling entry hazards to let Chansey preserve its HP and can effectively switch into Knock Off. Another one of its strengths is its ability to handle Marshadow and Deoxys-A well. In return, Chansey is able to switch into most special attackers that would overpower Mega Sableye and transfer Wish. Giratina is able to handle most physical attackers, most notably Primal Groudon and Mega Lucario, which heavily threaten the aforementioned common partners. It also provides Defog support to keep the field clean of entry hazards, switches into Fighting-type attacks, and uses Pressure to deplete the opposing team's PP. Giratina appreciates Wish support from Chansey and can opt to use Rest without Sleep Talk thanks to Heal Bell. Giratina-O is an alternative option to check Primal Groudon better in exchange of lower bulk and lack of Pressure. Primal Groudon is another good partner that appreciates Wish and cleric support from Chansey. It provides Stealth Rock support, threatens Steel-types, acts as a secondary check to Primal Kyogre and Xerneas, and weakens physical attackers with potential burn from Lava Plume. It also makes up for Chansey's passivity to large extent when paired with Chansey on balance teams. Ho-Oh is another teammate that aids Chansey by handling Xerneas and Arceus formes. Ho-Oh appreciates cleric support from Chansey, since it can play more aggressively against Arceus formes. It also threatens opposing Steel-types with Sacred Fire, and said move also spreads burns that give Chansey room to breathe against physical attackers. Lugia can also be paired with Chansey due to the cleric support it appreciates, and it is capable of handling Naganadel thanks to Multiscale. Zygarde-C can stay healthy without losing too much momentum thanks to Chansey's Wish and cleric support that lessen the necessity to use Rest often. In return, it can use its colossal bulk to prevail against Primal Groudon, Necrozma-DM, Marshadow lacking Hidden Power Ice, Ho-Oh, Swords Dance Arceus formes, and Mega Lucario. Support Arceus formes also appreciate Chansey's Wish and cleric support. Arceus-Fairy is able to shut down most Marshadow variants and threaten Yveltal, which concerns Chansey with Knock Off and Taunt. It is also able to force out Mega Sableye, which otherwise completely shuts down Chansey. Arceus-Ground checks Primal Groudon, Mega Salamence, and Mega Lucario. Xerneas is another partner that can force out Mega Sableye, Marshadow, and Yveltal, which otherwise massively bother balance teams or stall teams in the former's case. Chansey is able to offer Wish support in return. If Xerneas is running Aromatherapy, it can let Chansey use both Wish and Confide.

Set Information Toxic can be used to wear down threats that try to switch into Chansey such as Mega Aerodactyl, as well as bulky Pokemon like Poliwrath, Zapdos, and Rhydon. It also allows Chansey to directly combat special attackers utilizing recovery, such as Mega Alakazam and Nasty Plot Mew. Thunder Wave can be used to slow down fast Pokemon like Gengar, Mega Alakazam, and Mega Beedrill as well as hinder Pokemon that are immune to Toxic like Melmetal and Alolan Muk, making it easier for Chansey's teammates to take care of them. Teleport allows Chansey to safely pivot away from special attackers it can sponge hits from, keeping up momentum in the face of potential physically offensive switch-ins that Chansey can't handle. Usage Tips Chansey can be used early- or mid-game to force its threats to come out and use Teleport to gain momentum on them or spread Toxic or Thunder Wave. Switch Chansey into special attackers like Zapdos, Mega Alakazam, and Starmie or bring it in on a predicted switch. Use Teleport on a predicted switch to a Pokemon that can threaten Chansey, like Melmetal, Mega Gyarados, or Mega Beedrill, so a teammate can come in and take care of it. Use Toxic or Thunder Wave on predicted switches, the former to put a timer on Pokemon such as Zapdos, Poliwrath, and Rhydon, and the latter to slow down offensive switch-ins like Mega Gyarados and Gengar. Chansey can also use Seismic Toss in order to chip down Pokemon that commonly can switch into it such as Melmetal, Zapdos, and Alolan Sandslash. Be careful around potential mixed attackers such as Mega Charizard Y, Zapdos, and Mega Venusaur, as Chansey gets 2HKOed by a physical attack from these. Do not leave Chansey in on Mew if it has Taunt, as Chansey will get chipped down and be unable to heal itself. Chansey should also be wary of a potential U-turn from Mew, as it can heavily dent it. Do not let Chansey get hit by Toxic, as this will impair its ability to take special attacks and wear it down a lot faster. Team Options Many Pokemon appreciate Chansey soaking up all special attacks for them and providing them a safe switch-in with Teleport. Chansey appreciates Zapdos and Mega Venusaur being able to come in and tank a variety of physical attacks, including Fighting-type attacks from Poliwrath. Both of them can also help take care of Mega Gyarados, a major threat to Chansey. Mew is great to pair with Chansey because it can handicap powerful physical attackers like Melmetal, Mega Gyarados, and Dragonite with Will-O-Wisp. Rhydon acts as a great answer to Zapdos, checks many physical attackers including Mega Aerodactyl and Mega Beedrill, and has a potent offensive presence to help offset the passivity of the more defensive teams Chansey often appears on. Melmetal appreciates Chansey walling special attacks from Zapdos, Gengar, and Starmie that it does not take well and getting it in safely with Teleport to threaten physical attackers. On more offensive teams, Mega Beedrill can benefit from Chansey safely pivoting it into Mew to fire off attacks. If Chansey is running Thunder Wave, teammates that can spread Toxic are useful; Poliwrath is proficient at this, as it threatens most Pokemon immune to the move, and it also helps take on threats to Chansey such as Melmetal and Rhydon.

Moves Stealth Rock lets Chansey slowly wear down threats like Mega Pinsir and Dragonite. Soft-Boiled gives Chansey form of reliable recovery. Seismic Toss lets Chansey damage Taunt users like Mew and allows it to wear down offensive threats like Keldeo on the switch in. Toxic lets Chansey wear through walls like Mantine and Porygon2. Natural Cure cures Chansey of any status as it switches out, allowing it to switch into status users like Zapdos for its teammates. Usage Tips Prioritize setting Stealth Rock, especially against types like Fire and Bug where its very important to chip threats like Heatran and Heracross, respectively. Play safely with Chansey in matchups like Bug, Dragon, and rain Water so that it can check Pokemon like Volcarona, Hydreigon, and Kingdra more consistently. For example, if Chansey has switched into a Hydreigon, play safely and heal instead of trying to cripple a switch-in with Toxic so that you can check Hydreigon more reliably later on in the game. It's also very important to heal consistently against pivot-centric types like Electric that chip Chansey down quickly and force it out with powerful wallbreakers like Alolan Golem. If given the opportunity, surprise Pokemon like Zapdos and Mantine with Toxic on the switch in. Play aggressively against Taunt users like Mew by switching out to something that can handle them on a predicted Taunt. Utilize Natural Cure to absorb status for teammates like Porygon2 and Staraptor. For example, if Porygon2 is matched up against a Celesteela, scout for a potential Toxic by swapping out to Chansey. Use Chansey as a defensive pivot, tanking hits from Pokemon like Tapu Koko and Mega Diancie throughout games. Play cautiously against Trick users like Latios and Knock Off users like Gliscor and Mandibuzz, as if Chansey switches into a Trick from Choice Scarf Latios it becomes into a liability, and if it loses its item to Knock Off, it becomes more vulnerable to attackers like Greninja. Team Options Porygon2 acts as Chansey's physically defensive partner, capable of taking on Pokemon like Mega Scizor and Victini. Staraptor checks Fighting-types like Heracross and removes problematic entry hazards like Toxic Spikes for Chansey. Mega Lopunny beats huge threats such as Mega Sableye that Chansey struggles with. Ditto helps mitigate Chansey's weakness to setup Pokemon like Dragon Dance Mega Altaria. Diggersby breaks through walls like Ferrothorn for Chansey and can handle defensive cores on types like Water and Poison that Chansey struggles with. Porygon-Z is a late-game cleaner that takes advantage of Chansey's ability to chip down the opponent's team with Stealth Rock and Toxic and can break through walls like SubToxic Zapdos that Chansey could potentially struggle with. Choice Specs Meloetta breaks walls like Clefable that are unafraid of Chansey's Toxic. Mega Pidgeot helps against Steel teams by beating Pokemon like Ferrothorn for Chansey; it can also deal with problematic Pokemon like Mega Venusaur and revenge kill Fighting-types like Keldeo and Mega Gallade.

Moves Seismic Toss prevents Chansey from being completely passive, dealing a set 100 damage to any non-Ghost-type Pokemon. While it will take a few turns to knock out an opposing Pokemon with Seismic Toss alone, Chansey can use this move to prime its partner for a KO or finish off something at low HP. Soft-Boiled is the second of two all-but-mandatory moves on Chansey's set, allowing it to remain healthy. Given that a large portion of common attacks in the tier will fail to deal more than 50% to Chansey, this is an invaluable tool that can turn Chansey into a late-game wincon. The final two moveslots are highly variable, and while two moves tend to be the best options in a vacuum, various teams tend to appreciate different types of support. Toxic allows Chansey to put opposing bulky Pokemon on a timer and more effectively close out games on its own, as one Toxic is often enough for Chansey to play a stall endgame. Stealth Rock punishes opponents' switches and adds another dimension Chansey's support capabilites. Heal Pulse turns the focus from Chansey to its partners, making it easier for Chansey's teammates to stay on the field just a bit longer. Set Details Chansey's EV spread is quite simple and, in conjunction with a Bold nature, aims to maximize Chansey's poor Defense, since its monstrous Special Defense requires no assistance. 248 HP / 8 SpD is used over 252 HP / 4 SpD because this allows Chansey to survive a Shattered Psyche from neutral-natured Deoxys-A in Psychic Terrain should Chansey lose its Eviolite. Speaking of which, Eviolite is the only acceptable item choice on Chansey thanks to the much-needed boost to Chansey's Defense it provides. The ability choice is largely one of personal preference. Natural Cure provides a way for Chansey to cure its harmful status conditions, while Healer does the same for Chansey's teammates. This choice can be largely inconsequential, however, as status moves are relatively uncommon in Doubles OU. Usage Tips Chansey is most effective when it can stay healthy throughout an entire battle. Since it very rarely carries Protect in its moveset, Chansey can be prone to being double targeted. As such, keeping Chansey healthy at all times lowers the chance that it can be knocked out by a combination of two attacks in one turn. Chansey should avoid Knock Off, since losing its Eviolite makes it much more vulnerable to taking large amounts of damage, especially from physical attacks. Additionally, Chansey needs to be careful about being hit by Z-Moves; these strong, one-time-use attacks are a great way to power through the wall that is Chansey, but they can be played around either by switching or using Soft-Boiled to counteract the damage. If Chansey runs out of support options near the end of a battle, it can act as a checkmate on its own when the opponent's remaining Pokemon cannot deal significant damage to it. When playing with this endgame in mind, you should prioritize eliminating physical attackers before special attackers, as Chansey will have a much easier time closing out games when it only has to rely on its Special Defense. Team Options One must be careful about letting the team surrounding Chansey become too passive; Chansey is the very definition of passive support, so slow-paced teammates like Amoonguss can provide opponents with too much time to enact their plan. In general, Pokemon with the potential to output large amounts of damage right off the bat, such as Mega Charizard Y and Tapu Lele, make great partners. Means to deter setup, such as Taunt and Haze, help Chansey by eliminating one of the best means of muscling through its defenses. When running Toxic, Chansey also appreciates an Island Guardian by its side that can override Misty Terrain; any of Tapu Koko, Tapu Bulu, and Tapu Lele will fill this role effectively. Finally, Pokemon with Intimidate like Incineroar and Landorus-T help further bolster Chansey's Defense against opposing physical attacks, allowing it to remain on the field much longer. All things considered, Chansey's vast arsenal of support options lends it to being useful on just about any team.

Moves Shore Up is mandatory, as it increases Chansey's longevity and allows it to switch in repeatedly in all stages of the game. It also keeps Chansey's HP high in order to use Metal Burst more frequently and to greater effect. Metal Burst provides some offensive presence and allows Chansey to remain functional even when hit with Taunt. It also deals a hefty amount of damage, and the HP loss isn't too detrimental, as Fur Coat Chansey can sponge hits well. Whirlwind prevents Chansey from becoming setup fodder, as Chansey can do very little to threaten Pokemon using setup moves such as Primal Kyogre and Mega Mewtwo Y. It also has no way of touching foes behind a Substitute, as Metal Burst does not bypass it. Topsy-Turvy enables Chansey to further Imposter-proof a team and maintain offensive momentum. U-turn allows Chansey to safely switch, generating momentum for the team. Baton Pass functions similarly, though has twice as much PP and doesn't make contact, crucially avoiding being hurt by moves like Baneful Bunker and Spiky Shield; however, it also passes on unwanted effects such as Leech Seed and Parting Shot's debuffs, moves used pretty often against Chansey. Wish could be an option to consider alongside Shore Up, allowing Chansey to be able to support its team by passing large HP refills. This move pairs nicely with U-turn or Baton Pass, as Chansey is often slow enough to grant a chosen ally a free switch in addition to a large HP restoration. However, it should be noted that Chansey can be taken advantage of quite easily by an opposing Imposter Chansey if one opts to use Wish, as the foe can freely use Wish to support their own team and Fur Coat Chansey can do little to prevent that. If Wish is chosen, it can be run in the fourth slot. Set Details Eviolite is the mandatory item, as it boosts Chansey's defensive stats by a considerable amount. Fur Coat further boosts its Defense to a point where it can comfortably wall physical threats despite its base 5 Defense. A Relaxed nature with 0 Speed IVs is useful for getting off a slow Baton Pass to build up momentum. Additionally, this makes Chansey as slow as possible in order for it to be outsped by as many Pokemon as possible so as to make better use of Metal Burst. Usage Tips Switch Chansey in on threats it can check, such as Mega Diancie and Kyurem-B. However, one should be careful about dangerous status moves such as Spore, Trick, and Taunt, as they can reduce Chansey's effectiveness heavily. One should attempt to determine if the foe carries one of those moves, as well as other such dangerous status moves, before blindly switching Chansey in. Chansey also is incredibly susceptible to Knock Off, as the move rids it of its precious Eviolite. Therefore, it is advised that you carefully scout for the moves of suspected Knock Off users such as Yveltal, Regigigas, and Mega Tyranitar before switching Chansey in. Additionally, although Chansey is a sturdy physical wall, it can ill afford to switch into the tier's hardest hitters such as Steelworker Kartana and Choice Band Mega Mewtwo X. As Chansey heavily relies on its ability to sponge physical attacks aimed at it, Mold Breaker Pokemon are especially threatening, as they simply ignore Fur Coat altogether, so ensure Chansey avoids them at all costs. In the same vein, Sunsteel Strike users such as Necrozma-DM and Kartana are also very threatening for Chansey. Boosting physical sweepers commonly carry the move to pierce abilities such as Fur Coat, so it is advised to scout for the move on suspected physical sweepers before sending Chansey out against them. Chansey is best used to supplement an existing defensive core, as it's a good blanket check to many threats. Team Options Pokemon such as Giratina, Aegislash, and Zygarde-C form a solid defensive core with Chansey, as the former two Pokemon can handle Fighting-types that trouble Chansey, and the latter is an excellent all-purpose physically defensive wall. Additionally, these Pokemon greatly appreciate Chansey's ability to easily tank common special moves, such as Ice Beam and Blue Flare, aimed at its allies. They are all also viable users of entry hazards, which Chansey can take advantage of because it forces many switches either by simply switching in or using Whirlwind. Offensive Pokemon Chansey can Imposterproof include Sheer Force Mega Mewtwo Y, certain Mega Gengar sets, and the majority of -ate sets, though Chansey is extremely passive and often doesn't fit perfectly on very many teams A Magic Bounce Pokemon such as Registeel can bounce back dangerous status moves like Spore that threaten Chansey. Additionally, Chansey can do very little to prevent the foe from setting up entry hazards, so a Magic Bounce Pokemon can easily take advantage of that by switching in and reflecting them right back. This proves especially useful should the opponent have a Sturdy Shedinja, as Chansey can do literally nothing to prevent it from switching in and forcing Chansey out. Running hazard removal is a safer way to deal with entry hazards, however. Defensive Pokemon like Registeel and Giratina make good users of Defog. As Chansey is often a prime target for Knock Off and Spore users, one can opt to use a Poison Heal user with Toxic Orb to absorb the moves; Knock Off proves useless if the ally has already activated it, and Spore is ineffective against a Pokemon already afflicted by a status ailment. Prime users of Poison Heal include Zygarde-C, Primal Kyogre, and Mega Tyranitar. Funnily enough, Imposter Chansey can pair well with Fur Coat Chansey. As mentioned earlier, Imposter Chansey can scout the opponent's sets easily, revealing dangerous lure sets and moves. Lastly, Misty Surge allies protect Chansey from status, widening the list of sets it's able to check and preventing it from being crippled. Defensive pivots like Giratina and Primal Kyogre are some examples of viable Misty Surge users.

Moves Most of the time Chansey inherits the moves of the Pokemon it transforms into, so the selected moves are chosen to help Chansey deal with the rare instances in which Imposter fails to activate. Shore Up allows Chansey to recover its HP, meaning it can still operate as a bootleg defensive Pokemon should Imposter not activate. Whirlwind is used to phaze the foe should they be behind a Substitute, as that disables Imposter from activating. It also serves as a way to handle setup sweepers, as Pokemon such as Primal Kyogre and Mega Gengar can very easily set up on Chansey and overpower it. U-turn lets Chansey pivot out safely to a more threatening teammate to avoid being taken advantage of. Metal Burst provides Chansey with some offensive presence. As it deals damage based on the amount of HP Chansey takes from a move that turn, it can inflict some serious damage if used correctly. Once shown, it can also discourage the opponent from attacking Chansey in fear of being KOed in return. Final Gambit is an option to essentially net a trade KO. This could be useful if KOing a switch-in is more beneficial than keeping Chansey around. Thanks to Chansey's sky-high HP stat, so long as it is at a moderately high amount of HP, it can KO a large majority of the metagame. Trick can be used to cripple an enemy with a burdening item. It's recommended to only use Trick when equipped with a Choice Scarf, as giving up Eviolite is seldom is a worthwhile trade-off. Alternative move options include Parting Shot over U-turn to net some momentum against Pokemon Chansey has failed to Transform into. It also comes with the added benefit of ignoring Substitute, one method of preventing Imposter from activating, while also forcing Magic Bounce Pokemon to switch out, though this could easily backfire as it'd give the opponent a free switch to whatever they desire. Refresh could also be chosen for its ability to remove any burdening status ailments, as they carry over even when transformed. Lastly, Spectral Thief or Haze removes any stat boosts the foe may have, somewhat alleviating Chansey's big weakness to being made setup fodder. These could be chosen over Whirlwind, if one forgoes that move, in case Chansey's team struggles to check specific sets that Whirlwind is useless against such as a sweeper with Magic Bounce. Set Details Eviolite boosts Chansey's defenses both prior to and during transformation, granting Chansey a lot of additional bulk and enabling it to effortlessly deal with so many Pokemon one-on-one. A viable alternative to Eviolite is Choice Scarf. Although it gives up a lot of bulk and locks Chansey into one move, it'll be able to outspeed setup sweepers rather than simply Speed tie with them. A Relaxed nature is used to further boost Chansey's lackluster Defense stat whilst minimizing its Speed stat. This is important, as moves like Metal Burst and U-turn are more effective when used last. However, sometimes 252 Speed EVs with an Impish nature can be beneficial, as then Chansey will outspeed opposing Imposter users and Transform into them if both Imposters are switched in at the same time. This allows you to safely scout the opposing Chansey's set as well as use their moves without losing PP. Usage Tips Always keep in mind that simply bringing a Chansey to a battle puts immense pressure on the opponent, as they must utilize their offensive Pokemon carefully to avoid being swept by their own Pokemon. Another important note is that Chansey is incredibly weak before Transforming, as it cannot defend itself very well against Pokemon that can switch in and damage it heavily or use certain moves like Spore. Therefore, one should actively prevent Chansey from participating in battle untransformed as much as possible. In most instances, Chansey is an extremely effective lead, as it can safely scout its foe's set without being in danger of being trapped and PP stalled. Only in certain situations (for instance, when leading off against a self-Imposterproofed Mega Gengar) will it be a poor choice. Even in this instance, though, you can still determine your best course of action safely after scouting the opposing set's moves. Pivot Chansey in whenever possible to scout for the foe's set. That information could prove incredibly useful when making decisions later on in the battle. It is encouraged that one switch Chansey in on a defensive Pokemon like Giratina or Mega Audino, as in most instances, they can do very little damage to it. If it does fall low on HP, however, one can switch it in on said defensive Pokemon and utilize their own status moves or abilities such as Regenerator or Magic Bounce with little resistance, as often those Pokemon can do little to stop Chansey from doing so. One might also wish to double switch Chansey in when predicting an opponent's switch, as that is a good way to determine a Pokemon's set. It should be noted, however, that certain Pokemon such as Zygarde-C, Registeel, and Mega Steelix may run sets specifically designed to trap and KO Imposter users with moves like Anchor Shot, hoping to catch Imposter users and PP stall them until they're KOed. For this reason, Chansey should be careful not to recklessly switch into Pokemon that commonly use these sets. Despite having a high HP stat and access to Eviolite, Chansey can ill afford to switch into hard-hitting threats repeatedly, especially if the aforementioned threats are they themselves frail, as you'll be copying their defensive stats as well, or hit super effectively by their own moves. Examples of frail threats include Deoxys-A and Mega Sceptile, and examples of threats hit hard by their own moves include Red Orb Groudon and certain Mega Gengar sets. However, if they are also boosting their defensive stats through the means of Quiver Dance, Chansey can actually switch in quite safely. Thanks to Imposter's mechanics, Chansey is effective at stalling PP, as it can refresh its limited PP simply by switching out. This gives Chansey the edge in PP stalling situations. Team Options Due to the nature of Imposter, Chansey can fit on nearly every team archetype and is very self-sufficient, so it rarely requires team support to function. Having said that, Chansey appreciates being able to switch in freely, which slow allies such as Registeel, Aegislash, and Mega Audino can allow it to with U-turn or Parting Shot. The aforementioned Pokemon are also useful for setting up entry hazards to not only deter Sturdy Shedinja, a Pokemon Chansey has a tough time beating, from switching in but also deal some chip damage to assist in a potential countersweep. It also breaks any Focus Sashes that frail Pokemon like Deoxys-A commonly use to protect themselves against Imposter Chansey, as they are frail yet powerful enough to OHKO a Transformed Chansey after setting up. As Chansey takes damage from hazards before transforming, it's susceptible to every form of hazard, which can wear it down rather quickly. The aforementioned slow allies all do well as hazard removers. Pokemon that can handle common Judgment users like Mega Gengar and Arceus make for great teammates, as Chansey cannot handle them in a one-on-one situation. These Pokemon include Yveltal and Primal Kyogre, which are valuable for their ability to check Mega Gengar, easily the most common user of this strategy, with ease. Another archetype of sweepers Imposter Chansey struggles to beat one-on-one are Poison Heal sweepers. Users like Regigigas, Xerneas, and Primal Kyogre often have no problem putting Chansey to sleep and then slowly beating it down, taking advantage of the Imposter's lack of Poison Heal recovery. Teammates like Zygarde-C and Giratina are some tried-and-true checks to Regigigas, whereas some Primal Kyogre sets and Toxic Orb Magic Guard Ho-Oh can deal with Xerneas handily. Lastly, Primal Kyogre is checked by Red Orb Groudon and RegenVest Primal Kyogre. RegenVest users also are helpful for Chansey, as not only can they deal with the problematic Mega Gengar, they also switch into opposing Imposter Chansey and take advantage of its passiveness to recover HP. Viable RegenVest Pokemon include Yveltal, Primal Kyogre, and Dialga. Teammates with Misty Surge are also beneficial, as they help protect Chansey from crippling status ailments. Chansey's status carries over every time it is Transformed, meaning if it is burned it cannot be as effective as a physical damage dealer, for instance. Defensive pivots like Giratina and Primal Kyogre are some examples of viable Misty Surge users.

Chansey is one of the best special walls a stall team can ask for, with Eviolite making it nearly impenetrable by special attacks. Stealth Rock is a good choice for the last slot, but Minimize can make Chansey infuriating to hit due to the sharp evasion increase. Protect can come in handy for scouting powerful Choiced physical attackers, and it even has the potential to surprise a Blaziken using High Jump Kick. If Toxic poisoning is especially a concern for other teammates, Aromatherapy is a niche but useful option. Chansey is extremely vulnerable to physical attackers, so make sure to carry physically defensive Pokemon for your stall team.

Moves Soft-Boiled gives Chansey reliable recovery, preventing her from being worn down. Toxic gives Chansey a way to wear down opposing Pokemon. Wish allows Chansey to heal herself as well as her teammates, which will often be restored to full health thanks to Chansey's incredible base 250 HP stat. Thunder Wave is another option to slow down the foe and cripple opposing setup sweepers. Heal Bell allows Chansey to rid herself and her teammates of status. Protect guarantees that Chansey can restore her own health with Wish and lets her stall out foes with Toxic if she runs the latter; it can also be handy to scout for moves such as Trick and Knock Off, which could otherwise cripple Chansey. Seismic Toss is the move of choice in the last slot, as it allows Chansey to get chip damage on the foe. Set Details Eviolite is mandatory, as it gives Chansey immense special bulk while also shoring up her weaker Defense. Natural Cure is the preferred ability because it allows Chansey to recover from any status effects upon switching out. The EV spread boosts Chansey's Defense and Special Defense, maximizing the effect of Eviolite; in any case, her massive HP stat usually makes it unnecessary to invest in HP. A Bold nature is used to improve her physical bulk. An alternative spread of 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD can be used to pass larger Wishes while still boosting her physical bulk, but this detracts from her special bulk. Usage Tips Chansey is best sent in against special attackers such as Stratagem so she can perform her supporting duties more easily. She lacks the passive recovery of Leftovers and is prone to being worn down by residual damage as a result, so it is important to play safe with Chansey and keep her healthy with Soft-Boiled so she can continue to check threats throughout the game. If using Protect, make sure to scout for potential users of Knock Off and Trick, as these moves heavily cripple Chansey. Team Options Tomohawk is an amazing partner for Chansey. Chansey hates Knock Off and setup sweepers, both of which Tomohawk can handle with ease thanks to its Fighting typing, Prankster Haze, and reliable recovery; in return, Chansey can handle strong special attackers for Tomohawk. Cyclohm is another Pokemon that pairs well with Chansey, and it also forms an effective stall core alongside Tomohawk with its ability to take on physical attackers, especially Flying-types, which can trouble both Tomohawk and Chansey. Defoggers such as Zapdos and Skarmory tend to pair well with Chansey, as they can remove entry hazards and prevent Chansey from taking residual damage. A Rapid Spin user such as Colossoil is preferred if Chansey is using Stealth Rock on her set. Checks and Counters Trick Users: Pokemon with Trick such as Mollux and Aurumoth can remove Chansey's Eviolite and cripple her with a Choice item. Knock Off Users: Pokemon that run Knock Off such as Colossoil, Bisharp, and Mega Scizor can all remove Chansey's Eviolite, significantly reducing her bulk. Taunt Users: Taunt users such as Tomohawk, Kitsunoh, and Gengar can completely prevent Chansey from doing her job. Kitsunoh and Gengar in particular are immune to Seismic Toss thanks to their Ghost typing, rendering Chansey completely helpless against them. Fighting-types: Strong Fighting-types such as Terrakion, Keldeo, and Revenankh can threaten to KO Chansey with their STAB Fighting-type attacks. Setup Sweepers: Setup sweepers such as Mega Scizor and Mega Altaria can easily use Chansey as setup bait.

Moves Thunder Wave is a must on Chansey to prevent Mega Gengar from coming in for free and removing Chansey. It also slows down special attackers such as Calm Mind Latios, Xerneas, and Primal Kyogre. Toxic punishes Pokemon that would otherwise beat Chansey, such as offensive Primal Groudon and Choice Band Ho-Oh, and helps Chansey stall out special attackers that cannot break through it, such as Darkrai and Calm Mind Arceus formes without Refresh. However, if you feel your team requires cleric support, Heal Bell can be used over Toxic. Soft-Boiled is used to keep Chansey healthy, especially since this set cannot fit both Protect and Wish. Finally, Seismic Toss is used to give Chansey some offensive presence to prevent it from being complete setup bait. It can quickly wear down Pokemon such as Klefki and Shaymin-S but struggles to stop any Substitute user capable of setting up a 101 HP Substitute, such as Ho-Oh or Arceus. Set Details Chansey invests in its defenses rather than its HP to maximize both its physical and special bulk. A Bold nature is used to further bolster its much weaker Defense so that it can reliably take on weaker physical attacks when need be. The only item that should be used on Chansey is Eviolite; without the extra bulk it provides, Blissey would outclass Chansey completely. Natural Cure is the ability Chansey should use to cure status ailments as it switches out. Usage Tips Because Chansey does such a good job of absorbing special attacks, it can switch in liberally on special attackers such as Xerneas, Calm Mind Arceus formes lacking Refresh, and Yveltal lacking Taunt. Watch out for stallbreaking sets such as Rest Geomancy Xerneas and the aforementioned Refresh Arceus formes; they can use Chansey as setup bait, so it is a good idea to go into another check to these Pokemon for scouting before sending in Chansey. Once Chansey switches in on a special attacker it can check easily, it should aim to spread status ailments to support its team. If you expect a Primal Groudon switching in, use Toxic; if you expect Mega Gengar or a fast sweeper capable of damaging Chansey such as Calm Mind Latios, use Thunder Wave. It is advised to use Soft-Boiled liberally to keep Chansey healthy, as it can get worn out rather quickly by a combination of weak attacks, status, and entry hazards. There are times when it is a good idea to be more aggressive with Thunder Wave than usual. For example, if your opponent has a Mega Lucario and Chansey is relatively low on health, your opponent will probably use that turn to get Mega Lucario in for free on the predicted Soft-Boiled. Mega Gengar is another Pokemon that will often attempt to come in, especially the uncommon Taunt variant. Chansey can punish aggressive play very easily with a well-timed Thunder Wave. Also, do note that while Chansey can pivot in on Primal Kyogre's Origin Pulse and Deoxys-A's Psycho Boost, it must beware of Primal Kyogre's physical set and Deoxys-A's Superpower. Team Options Pokemon that can reflect or remove entry hazards, such as Mega Diancie, Giratina-O, and Latios, can assuage Chansey's weakness to them. The latter two Pokemon can also check dangerous Fighting-types such as Mega Lucario and Mega Mewtwo X. Chansey has a terrible matchup with Primal Groudon, so reliable checks to that Pokemon, such as Lugia and support Arceus-Ground, are mandatory. Arceus-Rock and Lugia can also deal with other physical threats, such as Ho-Oh and Mega Salamence. Because Chansey is used on balance, you will often have at least one setup sweeper that can take advantage of the status that Chansey spreads. Swords Dance Arceus-Ground and Calm Mind Arceus-Rock enjoy paralysis support while checking Pokemon Chansey is weak to, such as Primal Groudon and Ho-Oh, respectively. Finally, if you are worried about Taunt Mega Gengar, you can use a Pursuit trapper such as Tyranitar or Aegislash to remove it.

Moves Stealth Rock is useful for wearing down the opponent's team, and Chansey's great bulk helps it find many opportunities for setting it up. Soft-Boiled gives Chansey reliable recovery to allow it to continuously switch into attacks. Seismic Toss keeps Chansey from being Taunt fodder and allows it to slowly beat foes that lack recovery such as Swampert. Thunder Wave and Toxic are both very useful for punishing setup sweepers that try to take advantage of Chansey, such as Mega Gallade, Mega Pinsir, and Dragonite. Toxic works well with Chansey's stall-like nature and helps it cripple and combat opposing walls, such as Zapdos, on its own, while Thunder Wave is useful for slowing down fast threats, such as Victini. Set Details The EV spread minimizes Stealth Rock damage and makes Chansey as physically bulky as possible, helping it survive powerful hits such as Terrakion's Close Combat after Stealth Rock damage and Mega Lopunny's High Jump Kick. Natural Cure removes any status effects Chansey may have when it switches out, allowing it to be a great status absorber and almost impossible to permanently cripple. Eviolite gives Chansey a huge boost to its Defense and Special Defense, making it an almost unbreakable special wall. Usage Tips Pivot Chansey into special attackers and opposing walls, like Mega Charizard Y and Gastrodon, as neither are actually capable of beating it, and set up Stealth Rock as soon as possible to start dealing chip damage. Spreading status is Chansey's second objective, as it can easily start paralyzing or poisoning its switch-ins, making it even more difficult to check. Once a foe has been hit by a status move, Chansey can slowly whittle it down with Seismic Toss. Don't be afraid to trade status conditions with opposing walls, as Chansey can often beat the likes of Zapdos and Gastrodon thanks to Natural Cure. Make sure to keep Chansey as healthy as possible, so use Soft-Boiled whenever necessary, and be willing to switch out to cure any debilitating status effects. A weakened Chansey cannot switch into attacks as easily, which may make it more difficult to find opportunities to heal. Although Chansey can cripple some setup sweepers with status, those with Substitute or Taunt, such as Mega Gyarados, have little to fear from Chansey, and Chansey should not try to challenge them. Beware of Knock Off and Trick users, such as Bisharp and Choice Scarf Latios, as Chansey is incredibly reliant on Eviolite's boosts. Try to avoid physical attackers whenever possible, as even with the most possible physical bulk, Chansey can still be broken by the likes of Choice Band Diggersby. Team Options Chansey's ability to switch into special wallbreakers such as Landorus makes it pair best with physical walls, so Staraptor and Porygon2 are common teammates. Staraptor's use of Intimidate makes it a great switch-in to physical attackers such as Mega Sharpedo. It also serves as a fantastic Knock Off switch-in and can use Defog to clear entry hazards that can wear down Chansey. Staraptor's STAB Brave Bird also helps it check Fighting-types that beat Chansey. Porygon2's impressive mixed bulk allows it to check mixed attackers, such as Life Orb Kyurem-B. It can also use Foul Play to check sweepers that try to set up on Chansey, like Mega Scizor. Choice Scarf Ditto is another great option for soft checking many setup sweepers, as it can copy any boosts they might get and try to sweep the opposing team with its higher Speed. Mega Lopunny is one of the best Knock Off absorbers, as it both carries a Mega Stone and resists Dark-type moves. Meloetta is a fantastic offensive teammate for Chansey thanks to its unique typing and coverage, being able to use Psychic and Shadow Ball to check the likes of Doublade with ease. Diggersby has almost no defensive utility, but its incredible power makes it capable of defeating stallbreakers that beat Chansey like Gliscor.

Moves Baton Pass gives Chansey's teammates a free switch thanks to Chansey's low Speed. It allows Chansey to pose a threat to the foe by stealing momentum via freely switching into the appropriate check to the opponent's Pokemon and also gives Chansey the ability to scout foes. Transform allows Chansey to transform into the foe. Because of Transform's mechanics, Chansey retains its base HP stat and the effects of Eviolite, so it becomes an extremely bulky version of your opponent's Pokemon. It also copies any stat boosts the foe may be carrying, deterring the foe from setting up on Chansey and forcing otherwise dangerous special sweepers to flee out of fear of being swept. Despite the benefits of Transform, Wish is also a usable move in the second slot to fully heal a teammate alongside Baton Pass, though the set becomes less threatening overall. Seismic Toss breaks Substitute, which blocks Transform, allows Chansey to act when Taunted, and also helps it wear down threats such as Heatran that may stay in on Chansey. Recover keeps Chansey healthy and allows it to keeping pivoting and transforming into enemy Pokemon. Set Details The given EV spread maximizes Transform's efficiency and gives Chansey maximum physical bulk, allowing it to check physical attackers with Transform. A Relaxed nature bolsters Chansey's Defense while lowering its Speed, ensuring that it moves last and can get teammates in for free with Baton Pass. The IV spread gives Chansey Hidden Power Ice while transformed, increasing its effectiveness against opposing Pokemon with Hidden Power. An IV spread of 0 Atk / 0 SpA / 0 Spe is also possible should Hidden Power Fire be desired. Chansey's Speed and Attack IVs are minimized in order to make Baton Pass as slow as possible and make Chansey take less confusion and Foul Play damage, respectively. Eviolite increases Chansey's defenses both in its base forme and while transformed, giving it considerable physical bulk and immense special bulk in base forme and almost impregnable defenses after transforming. Natural Cure allows Chansey to pivot against status inducers without many drawbacks. Usage Tips This set's primary role is to switch in on special attackers such as Thundurus and Heatran that cannot threaten Chansey and then to use Baton Pass to get another one of your Pokemon into the game with few drawbacks. Given Baton Pass's invaluable utility for keeping momentum, this variant of Chansey will almost always be using the move. If using Wish, Baton Pass should be used after Wish in order to allow the recipient to avoid taking potentially fatal damage before being restored to full or near-full health. Try not to let the foe get entry hazards on the field, as Chansey cannot use Leftovers and thus cannot restore its HP without sacrificing momentum with Recover. Should Chansey be facing a foe with Substitute and a setup move, Chansey can break Substitutes with Seismic Toss and threaten to use Transform when no Substitute is up. It is critical that Transform not be used if Chansey is low on health, as after transforming into a foe without recovery and absorbing an attack, Chansey will often be too weak to switch in again. Thanks to Natural Cure, Chansey can also pivot into status users such as Rotom-W and opposing Chansey, allowing you to get a Pokemon in without having it be crippled by a status ailment. However, be wary of taking status moves while transformed, as after transforming, Chansey no longer has Natural Cure to remove status conditions when switching out. Finally, it is advisable not to switch into Pokemon you think carry Knock Off or Trick, as without Eviolite, Chansey is much easier to damage in its base forme and Transform becomes less useful. Team Options Mega Sableye blocks entry hazards for Chansey, is immune to Fighting-type attacks, and has access to Parting Shot, meaning that it can pivot against physical attackers that Chansey is hesitant to pivot against. Defog or Rapid Spin support from Pokemon such as Landorus-T and Stoutland is appreciated, as Chansey loathes entry hazards. Given that Chansey's bulk forces many switches, your own entry hazards from Pokemon such as Landorus-T and Heatran are also helpful. Frail attackers that do not like to switch directly into attacks, such as Gengar, Thundurus, and Serperior, benefit greatly from Chansey's utility as a pivot. Pokemon that are not frail but still prefer to avoid passive damage to extend their longevity such as Mega Blastoise and Togekiss are also great options. Other offensive Pokemon that aren't exactly frail or hesitant to take passive damage but still appreciate having a wall to fall back on due to frequent switching, or Pokemon are regularly targeted with special attacks, such as Mega Charizard X and Garchomp, are likewise ideal partners because Chansey helps them conserve momentum. Given that Chansey works well on VoltTurn teams, other users of U-turn, Volt Switch, and Parting Shot such as Scizor, Thundurus-T, and Hydreigon pair well with it. It is worth noting, however, that other Baton Pass users cannot be used alongside Chansey due to the Baton Pass clause.

Moves Recover keeps Chansey healthy and allows it to continually counter special attackers. Wish allows Chansey to restore the HP of its teammates as well as itself, often fully healing its teammates considering its giant HP stat. Protect is an option alongside Wish, allowing Chansey to scout for moves such as Knock Off and Trick from the foe and letting Chansey reliably heal itself with Wish. It is, however, quite predictable and easily exploited, so Recover is usually the better option. It is also quite vulnerable to phazing. Heal Bell cures Chansey and its teammates of detrimental status ailments. Alternatively, Toxic helps Chansey rack up damage alongside Seismic Toss and helps deter attackers from switching in. Transform gives Chansey an offensive outlet to fight back against setup sweepers and most attackers in general, turning it into a very bulky version of the foe factoring in Chansey's base 250 HP and the Eviolite boost. Whirlwind is an alternative over Transform that allows Chansey to both rack up entry hazard damage and force out otherwise problematic attackers, but it comes at the cost of Transform's ability to restrict the opponent's sweepers. Seismic Toss is Chansey's main source of damage, allowing it to act under Taunt and break Substitutes, which block Transform. Set Details The EV spread and a Bold nature make Chansey as bulky as possible, maximizing the effectiveness of Eviolite on its defenses. 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD is another possible EV spread that boosts the effectiveness of Wish and Transform, but it detracts from Chansey's special bulk, taking away from its ability to perform as an optimal special wall. The listed IVs give Chansey Hidden Power Ice, letting it combat Hidden Power users more easily after using Transform. An IV spread of 0 Atk / 0 SpA / 0 Spe is also possible should Hidden Power Fire be desired. Without Transform, however, maximum Defense IVs should be used because access to Hidden Power Ice is no longer needed. 0 Attack IVs minimize confusion and Foul Play damage. Eviolite increases Chansey's defenses both in its base forme and while transformed, giving it considerable physical bulk and immense special bulk in base forme and extremely high defenses after transforming. Natural Cure allows Chansey to function as a status absorber for the team. Usage Tips Chansey should be used to wall special attackers such as Mega Blastoise and Heatran which are otherwise dangerous to stall teams. If using Wish and Recover, do not be afraid to use Wish often, as its recipient is always nearly fully healed, so Wish can serve as a scouting move of sorts, waiting for a potential switch and then healing the team's best answer to the foe. Try to use Heal Bell conservatively, as it does not have many PP. Toxic should be use to whittle down foes and put a timer on Chansey's main switch-ins. Transform should be used if you think the foe will set up, while Seismic Toss breaks Substitutes, which block Transform, from special attackers such as Togekiss. If running Whirlwind, it should be used whenever you suspect the foe is going to use a setup move or Substitute. It also serves as a useful scouting move by allowing you to identify Chansey's main switch-in and can be used to whittle switch-ins down with entry hazard damage. Finally, remain cautious and scout for Knock Off and Trick users, as these moves cripple Chansey. Protect is useful for scouting for these moves should you be running it. Team Options Quagsire walls physical setup sweepers capable of overwhelming Chansey such as Tyranitar and Mega Scizor. Landorus-T is another Ground-type that also strongly complements Chansey, as it has very high physical bulk alongside Chansey's special bulk and can absorb Fighting-type attacks. Defog or Rapid Spin users such as Mega Latias and Landorus-T are very helpful given that entry hazards wear Chansey down fairly easily. Chansey forces many switches, so an entry hazard user of your own such as Skarmory or Ferrothorn aids Chansey in accumulating damage. Pokemon that resist Psychic-type moves, such as Mega Latias, can deal with Psystrike attackers that otherwise break Chansey and can cover most of the metagame's special attackers in general. Pokemon that resist Dark or are able to take on attackers with Knock Off, such as Clefable and Mega Scizor, respectively, are useful for taking on Knock Off attackers that Chansey flees from.

Imposter Chansey is one of the most effective utility Pokemon due to its ability to scout the opponent's sets in a metagame where every move is a possibility. Instantly copying the opponent's typing, stats, boosts, and movepool while retaining its massive 250 base HP and the defensive boost from Eviolite forces the opponent to face a much bulkier version of the set they built themselves. Scouting is Chansey's main utility, as this can help the player identify weaknesses in the opponent's team and potentially use their own strategy against them. Eviolite is generally the preferred item to give Chansey truly titanic bulk and retain the ability to switch moves, but Choice Scarf is another option to avoid Speed ties; this is especially important against offensive sweepers with Shell Smash, Spore, or Dark Void, as Chansey may not be able to recover from losing the Speed tie. Chansey's own moveset comes into play when it is switched in on a Pokemon behind a Substitute, with Illusion active, or that is an already-transformed Imposter user. Whirlwind forces the opposing Pokemon out, potentially disrupting a Substitute + Baton Pass user's support. Chatter allows Chansey to annoy Mold Breaker users behind a Substitute that it may try to switch into, such as Oblivion Wing Mega Rayquaza and Xerneas supported by a Substitute + Baton Pass user. Lunar Dance is a great option to retain momentum when Chansey is weakened, as Chansey excels on offensive teams that don't mind sacrificing Chansey to heal a severely damaged offensive teammate. Parting Shot allows Chansey to retain momentum while also weakening offensive opponents switching into Chansey. Spikes allows Chansey to set entry hazards when Chansey has a free turn; it also synergizes well with teammates running Stealth Rock. Wish takes advantage of Chansey's titanic HP to nearly fully heal teammates; alternatively, Recover is a strong option on Eviolite sets for more reliable recovery, as Chansey is prone to getting worn down by boosted threats. The given EV spread minimizes Speed so Chansey goes last in Imposter user mirrors, as having lower PP when Transformed and the opposing Imposter user's set likely being Imposter-proofed means Transforming is disadvantageous; the IVs set Chansey's Hidden Power type to Fire, as it is the most common Hidden Power type used to Imposter-proof. Due to its amazing utility in checking opposing sweepers, Imposter Chansey fits on nearly every team, though it excels on offense in particular. However, it requires some support to effectively scout and make progress. First, in order to switch in without risking being trapped and eliminated, Chansey requires teammates that can bring it in with a slow pivoting move such as Baton Pass Wonder Guard Mega Audino, Blissey, and Escavalier. Additionally, because Chansey's main utility activates on switch, Defog support from a teammate allows it to more easily come in and out without getting worn down by entry hazards; as such, Wonder Guard users that often carry Defog like Arceus and Primal Kyogre are good partners for Chansey. Chansey also requires a teammate that can switch into Knock Off, as it is heavily reliant on its item. Wonder Guard Pokemon that are not weak to Dark and work well on offensive teams, like Xerneas and Wonder Guard Gyarados, can easily switch into Knock Off for Chansey. Finally, -ate Speed users like Pixilate Mega Diancie and Refrigerate Kyurem-B excel at defeating sweepers that Imposter-proof themselves against Chansey like Mold Breaker Mega Gengar.

Moves Soft-Boiled grants Chansey instant recovery and the ability to wall all kinds of attackers. Wish grants another choice of recovery and can completely revitalize allies through Wish-passing. Seismic Toss allows Chansey to act while Taunted, deal consistent damage, and break Substitutes from Pokemon with less than 404 HP in one hit. Heal Bell, a must-have for any stall team, removes the party's status ailments, while Skill Swap lets Chansey defeat Pokemon with Poison Heal, use Toxic on Magic Bounce and Magic Guard Pokemon, weaken Adaptability Pokemon, and more; however, it is not recommended to use Skill Swap with Regenerator, as that would allow the foe to recover HP by switching. Toxic allows Chansey to whittle away at the HP of dangerous threats, such as Latios and Manaphy, but is ineffective against Poison Heal Pokemon and, particularly, Magic Bounce Pokemon, as they can bounce Toxic back onto Chansey. Set Details Chansey's EV spread maximizes her physical bulk to take on all kinds of threats, particularly those that take advantage of her lower Defense stat, while Eviolite augments Chansey's Defense and Special Defense by 1.5x. Magic Bounce lets Chansey bounce Taunt, entry hazards, and crippling status moves back onto the opposition; however, Pokemon with Mold Breaker can bypass Magic Bounce and use status moves. Regenerator augments Chansey's longevity and increases her viability as a consistent switch-in to offensive threats. Unaware allows Chansey to counter stat-boosting threats such as Manaphy and Nasty Plot Mew. Bear in mind that, even with Unaware, Chansey still struggles against physical setup sweepers such as Mega Gyarados and Dragonite. An alternative EV spread of 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpD is also good, as it increases Chansey's special bulk to optimize her matchup against special attackers, at the cost of worse physical bulk and less-potent Wishes; however, because the metagame is overrun by physical attackers and Pokemon with Psyshock, the main spread is still the most reliable. Usage Tips Chansey's main role is to wall special attackers. Early-game, it's important to remain reserved with Chansey's use. Constant switching without some prior scouting may risk Chansey's Eviolite being removed by Knock Off or Trick, and Chansey's lack of Leftovers leaves her more vulnerable to damage from sand, status ailments, and entry hazards. Pokemon with, at the least, 101-HP Substitutes, such as Manaphy, can set up against Chansey, paying no heed to her Seismic Toss. Skill Swap allows Chansey to defeat Poison Heal Pokemon, including those with Substitute. Additionally, Skill Swap allows Chansey to beat Sheer Force Gengar one-on-one, as the lack of Sheer Force weakens Gengar's attacks and forces it to take Life Orb recoil. After Chansey uses Wish, the opponent might predict the recipient, so tread carefully and study the opponent's tendencies while Wish-passing. As Whirlwind and Roar are unaffected by Protect, opponents might try to prevent Chansey from healing herself with Wish; however, with Magic Bounce or Regenerator, Chansey is relatively safe against this strategy. If Protect is used, use it to Toxic stall as well as scout mixed attackers and users of Trick or Knock Off; the latter point is most important, as Chansey relies on her Eviolite to effectively wall foes. Constant use of Wish may be used as a fail-safe strategy against opponents with a strong wallbreaker. For example, if a wallbreaker or sweeper that Chansey cannot wall is on the field and Wish has already been used, the Wish should be passed to a teammate, which effectively provides a safe switch in for the recipient. Pursuit trappers, namely Adaptability Tyranitar, can trap Chansey with Pursuit and greatly damage her; therefore, it's important to remain cautious against Pokemon with Pursuit. Team Options Physical walls such as Doublade, Regirock, and Diancie appreciate Chansey's Wish-passing and can take strong physical attacks aimed at Chansey, while Chansey can take strong special attacks aimed at them. Additionally, Intimidate Pokemon such as Mandibuzz and Chesnaught are extremely bulky and capable of walling a large portion of physical attackers. If Chansey lacks Heal Bell, Regenerator Diancie and Mew are good teammates, as they can both provide Heal Bell support. Even if Chansey has Magic Bounce, she does not excel at bouncing back entry hazards; consequently, spinners such as Blastoise or Defoggers such as Mandibuzz are obligatory teammates. Chansey excels at shutting down offensive threats and forcing switches, so users of Spikes and Stealth Rock, such as Deoxys-D and Ferrothorn, appreciate Chansey's Wish-passing and can set entry hazards to wear down foes. Pokemon with Roar help Chansey by phazing Substitute Pokemon and boosting sweepers, but this strategy will fail against Magic Bounce Pokemon. If Unaware is not used, Unaware walls such as Cresselia should be used to wall boosting sweepers, including those with Substitute. A Mega Evolution such as Mega Diancie can take a Knock Off or Trick aimed at Chansey, in order to preserve her Eviolite. Bulky setup Pokemon, such as Manaphy and Dragonite, appreciate Chansey's Wish-passing, as Wish can be used to keep them healthy. Chansey walls almost all special attackers, but Manaphy, Gengar, and Latios, in particular, give her trouble. For this reason, RegenVest variants of Goodra and Meloetta can be used to wall most Manaphy sets and check Adaptability Latios, respectively, and both are solid counters against Sheer Force Gengar.

Moves Due to Chansey's high HP stat, Metal Burst can deal a lot of damage to the foe if Chansey gets hit by a strong attack, and it can potentially OHKO the foe depending on the attack. Fur Coat Chansey is better at this role than Imposter Chansey is due to its massive physical bulk by comparison, allowing it to take more hits. Recover, or any other recovery move, allows Chansey to heal itself by a sizable portion of its HP reliably. Wish allows Chansey to heal its allies while also providing itself with another, albeit less reliable, form of healing. King's Shield lowers the foe's Attack if they use a contact move on Chansey. Most physical moves fall into this category, which means that King's Shield can be used to take advantage of the foe attempting to hit Chansey with a physical attack. It can also be used to scout your foe's moveset. Whirlwind allows Chansey to phaze the foe in an emergency. This can potentially be used to prevent a sweep if the foe doesn't have Magic Bounce. Baton Pass allows Chansey to preserve momentum and somewhat scout the foe's moveset by taking a hit with its sizable bulk and switching out. Baton Pass also has a massive 64 PP, allowing you to use it throughout the match. U-turn is similar to Baton Pass, but it cannot be Taunted or bounced back via Magic Bounce. The alternative, Volt Switch, has Pokemon immune to it, whereas U-turn does not. U-turn is a contact move, however, so Chansey will take Rocky Helmet damage whenever this move is used. Both of these options provide quite a bit of team support, as they are essentially a slow, safe switch into whatever offensive threat you want to send in. Set Details Chansey's HP EVs aren't maximized; this ensures that Eviolite provides as much of a benefit as possible. Attack IVs are minimized for Foul Play damage to be as low as possible. Defense EVs are maximized to increase the benefits given by both Fur Coat and Eviolite. A Relaxed nature also contributes to Chansey's massive physical bulk by boosting it by another 10%. This gives Chansey an effective Defense stat of a fully invested and positive-natured base 130 Defense Pokemon! The rest is put into Special Defense, as that is the only other stat that matters, outside of Speed, which is minimized as much as possible to preserve momentum by providing a slow, safer switch for frailer sweepers, as well as maximizing Metal Burst's effectiveness due to its dependence on the user's Speed stat. Fur Coat is run to double Chansey's Defense, allowing it to be effective as a physical wall, and Eviolite is run to increase Chansey's Defense and Special Defense by 50% on top of what Fur Coat provides for Defense, maximizing Chansey's bulk. Usage Tips Fur Coat Chansey is a counter to all -ate Pokemon, except if they have Spore, which is quite dangerous due to Chansey being unable to run Safety Goggles without being outclassed by other Fur Coat Pokemon such as Mega Audino or Giratina. It is highly recommended to scout your foe's moveset beforehand to make sure they don't have this move. Fur Coat Chansey values its Eviolite immensely, so it requires careful planning before you switch it in; essentially, you need to make sure that the foe doesn't have Knock Off as well before blindly switching Chansey in. For reference, this set gets 2HKOed by Mega Rayquaza and Mega Diancie on the switch by Boomburst without its Eviolite. This is a mixed wall that can switch in on most attacks that don't hit it super effectively. If you need something to take a hit and phaze the foe or simply provide a safer switch into a sweeper such as Deoxys-A, you should probably switch Chansey in. Metal Burst requires a slight amount of prediction to pull off successfully, as Chansey can easily be left in the dust if the foe uses a status move. Keep this in mind before you click it thinking it's essentially free damage. Of course, Fur Coat Chansey should not be your catch-all to setup sweepers, as if they set up enough, Chansey can very easily be KOed even with its massive bulk. In most cases, however, Chansey can take a hit and phaze the foe with Whirlwind, or at the very least it can provide a safer switch into something that can threaten the foe. Team Options Fur Coat Chansey provides quite a bit of team support in itself, but it still needs quite a bit of it. Entry hazard support from the likes of Aegislash and Registeel is appreciated to discourage Sturdy Shedinja from switching in, which threatens Chansey out with Endeavor. A Pokemon with Heal Bell or Aromatherapy, such as Mega Audino, is also nice to have, as the residual damage caused by these ailments can add up and hinder Fur Coat Chansey's ability to wall what it needs to. Another more interesting partner is Imposter Chansey, as it can be used to scout the foe's moveset for Spore or Knock Off, which Fur Coat Chansey doesn't like seeing. Poison Heal Pokemon such as Kyogre or Mega Audino, with their Toxic Orb activated, can be used to easily sponge Spores and Knock Offs that are thrown at Chansey.

Moves Fake Out allows Chansey to break Illusion, which is the only ability that prevents it from transforming on the switch. This also can break Focus Sashes if needed, and it essentially deals free damage. The lone exceptions to this are Ghost-types such as Mega Gengar, as they are immune to Fake Out, so an Illusion Ghost-type can be hard to deal with. Recover, or any other instant recovery move you choose to run, allows Chansey to instantly and reliably regain its health should it need to do so. Wish is another option that allows Chansey to pass half of its massive HP to either itself, which gives it a less instant form of recovery, or one of its allies. In most cases, the allies will be healed by more than half of their maximum HP due to Chansey's own massive HP stat. Whirlwind allows Chansey to phaze Substitute users, which Imposter doesn't work against, as well as prevent setup sweepers from setting up if they get too greedy. If the foe has Magic Bounce, Chansey will be phazed instead, but it still can be used to potentially prevent a sweep on non-Magic Bounce Pokemon. Metal Burst utilizes Chansey's ability to take very large amounts of damage due to its high HP and redirects any damage to the foe. Essentially, if Chansey gets hit by an attack, it will deal 150% of that damage to the foe, and thanks to Chansey's large HP stat, this can often result in taking out a major chunk of the foe's HP. It is highly recommended to minimize Speed IVs, shift the 8 Speed EVs to Special Defense, and change the nature on this set to Relaxed if Metal Burst is run due to the benefit of underspeeding base 50 Speed Pokemon. King's Shield takes advantage of the fact that the foe will most likely use a physical attack against Chansey, lowering their Attack if the move makes contact. Considering Chansey's lackluster physical bulk, even with Eviolite, this can be very crucial to keeping Chansey alive if Imposter fails to trigger. Set Details 248 EVs are invested in HP, as HP is the only stat that matters in most cases due to Imposter's mechanics, and 248 EVs are used over 252 to get an odd HP number for Curse and other forms of residual damage. Attack IVs are minimized and a Bold nature is run to minimize Foul Play and confusion damage, even though Chansey has an exceptionally low Attack stat regardless. Defense EVs are maximized because of Chansey's lackluster Defense stat when it doesn't transform into the foe. The rest of the EVs are put into Speed, as that is the only other stat that matters. Imposter allows Chansey to transform into the foe, copying attributes such as their stats, stat boosts, moves, and ability. Happiness can be changed to 0 or kept as the base 255, the former of which deals with Pokemon that rely on Frustration to deal with Imposter and the latter of which does so for Return. Because most items rely on the user's base species, not counting transformations, this opens up the option to run Eviolite or Lucky Punch on Imposter Chansey. Eviolite is run to increase the Defense and Special Defense of whatever Chansey transforms into by 50%. Lucky Punch can be run to increase Chansey's critical hit rate to 50%. This is exceptionally useful for breaking through the defensive boosts of the foe if they set up, and as such, it is better than Eviolite for dealing with most Poison Heal setup sweepers. It also can be used to deal with Pokemon that are simply not prepared for critical hits, such as -ate Pokemon. Usage Tips Imposter Chansey is exceptionally useful to scout the foe's movesets, especially with Eviolite, so it is safe to switch it in if you're wondering about said movesets, except for a few cases. These include known "Imposter-proof" Pokemon such as Mega Gengar and Hoopa-U, frail Pokemon such as Deoxys-A, and Pokemon that typically carry moves that hit themselves super effectively. With these Pokemon, you must be far more cautious when sending out Imposter Chansey, as this can easily mean free setup for them. Speaking of setup, Imposter Chansey is also quite useful if the foe has set up. Some examples are foes with Simple + Geomancy or Contrary, depending on the set for the latter. In particular, if the opponent has no counters to their current Pokemon, you can send in Imposter Chansey and attempt to counter-sweep them. This Chansey can also be used to stall; because it copies the foe, you can utilize tools such as Aromatherapy, Defog, and Magic Bounce even if you don't have them on your team. It also effectively has infinite PP if it transforms into the foe due to Imposter's mechanics of "replenishing" transformed PP once you switch Chansey out. Team Options Imposter Chansey is a massive amount of team support in itself due to it being able to scout movesets and counter-sweep, so it doesn't require too much of it to succeed. Of course, team support is always appreciated for any Pokemon, but Imposter Chansey doesn't need as much of it as others. A Pokemon that can deal with various "Imposter-proof" Pokemon, such as Yveltal for Mega Gengar, is highly recommended if you choose to rely on this for dealing with setup sweepers, because, as the name entails, Imposter Chansey cannot counter-sweep these in most cases. Entry hazard support from the likes of Registeel and Aegislash is always appreciated to deal chip damage and make a counter-sweep easier. Entry hazards also help against Sturdy Shedinja, which Chansey has a slightly difficult time against. Pivots, especially those with Magic Bounce, such as Registeel and Mega Audino, can also be used to prevent Chansey from taking a Knock Off and allow it to scout the foe's moveset safely.

Moves Seismic Toss is required in order to deal meaningful damage, as Chansey lacks the offensive stats to make good use of her other attacking options. Soft-Boiled provides reliable recovery that, along with Chansey's superb bulk and decent typing, gives her more chances to set up and increases her longevity. Along with some investment in Speed, Minimize allows Chansey to gain evasion boosts against slower foes, which will make her extremely hard to take down due to her reliable recovery and excellent bulk. Substitute works well with Chansey's ability to absorb weaker special attacks, easing setup, blocking status moves from slower foes such as Ferrothorn's Thunder Wave and Leech Seed, and, most importantly, allowing Chansey to stall out users of OHKO moves, which are threatening because they ignore evasion boosts. Both Thunder Wave and Toxic are viable options over Substitute, though, as the former gives Chansey the ability to move first, which is useful when setting up, and the latter helps wear the foe down while Chansey continues to grab evasion boosts; it is also helpful to have another source of damage besides Seismic Toss. Set Details Running maximum Speed investment with a positive nature is recommended on this set, as it gives Chansey more opportunities to set up against slower foes such as uninvested Cresselia, Mega Venusaur, and Suicune. The rest of the EVs are allocated to Defense to allow Chansey to take physical hits better, as she has a rather low physical bulk. A Bold nature with an EV spread of 252 Def / 252 SpD / 4 Spe can also be used but is not recommended, as Chansey then loses the ability to outspeed many defensive threats. Eviolite boosts Chansey's overall bulk by 1.5x and is required for her to set up and tank hits properly. Natural Cure allows Chansey to recover from status ailments if the foe is faster. The ability is also useful for scouting purposes, allowing you to find out whether Pokemon such as Venusaur are running any Speed investment. Usage Tips Chansey should be sent out on potential slower leads such as Ferrothorn, Hippowdon, and Skarmory for a chance to set up at the start of the match, but you must watch out for potential phazing moves such as Whirlwind. With maximum Speed and a Timid nature, Chansey can set up on faster foes with no Speed investment such as Cresselia, Venusaur, and Suicune. Substitute should always be used before setting up with Minimize, as it blocks potential Thunder Wave, Toxic, and Leech Seed while also protecting Chansey from Scald burns and OHKO moves. If the bulkier spread with a Bold nature is used, Chansey will force out a lot of special attackers such as Greninja, Mega Charizard Y, Volcarona, and Sylveon and can find opportunities to set up. Never send Chansey in on a potential Knock Off and always scout for Trick on the likes of Rotom-W and Latios, as without Eviolite, Chansey becomes very physically frail. Team Options Due to their immense physical bulk and access to reliable recovery, Slowbro and Mega Slowbro are excellent partners for Chansey, being able to deal with Fighting-types such as Blaziken as well as Talonflame. Gliscor can help Chansey wear down physical attackers such as Garchomp and Landorus-T by spreading Toxic so that Chansey can take advantage of her bulk to stall out the foes. Suicune is a nice partner because Chansey can set up on powerful Grass- and Electric-types such as Venusaur and Mega Manectric, two of Suicune's biggest threats. Tyranitar helps Chansey eliminate Gengar and Talonflame with Pursuit trapping and its powerful STAB moves, respectively; however, you should be aware that the residual damage from sand also wears down Chansey considerably due to her lack of Leftovers. Mega Evolutions such as Mega Salamence, Mega Scizor, and Mega Venusaur can switch into a predicted Knock Off or Trick, while Chansey can take powerful special attacks that threaten them in return. Both Klefki and Thundurus have access to Prankster Thunder Wave, which helps with spreading paralysis so that Chansey can set up Substitute on faster foes. Stallbreakers like Gliscor, Mega Gengar, and Talonflame can use Taunt to prevent foes from using Substitute and phazing moves such as Roar and Whirlwind; Talonflame also appreciates Chansey's ability to take on bulky Water-types such as Suicune. Mega Gengar can also trap and eliminate opposing Chansey as well as threaten Unaware Clefable with STAB Sludge Bomb.

Moves Seismic Toss is Chansey's only way of dealing damage outside of Toxic and is useful as chip damage in order to break Substitutes; it is also Chansey's only usable move after being hit by Taunt. Soft-Boiled serves as Chansey's only means of recovery, instantly recovering 50% of Chansey's HP and helping her stay alive for as long as possible. Thunder Wave lets Chansey cripple faster foes that can potentially sweep your team such as powerful Dragon Dance users, which include the likes of Mega Charizard X and Mega Salamence. Toxic is extremely useful when breaking down more defensively oriented foes that won't be worn down by Seismic Toss due to their access to reliable recovery, such as Porygon2 and Slowbro. Swagger is an option over Toxic, as the combination of the two statuses will give the foe only a 37.5% chance to retaliate per turn. Set Details As Chansey is always used as a reliable switch-in for Greninja, it is a good idea to invest 44 EVs in HP to allow Chansey to survive two Gunk Shots from neutral-natured maximum Attack Greninja. Maximum investment in Defense with the remaining EVs in Special Defense makes the most use of Eviolite. Due to the uneven distribution between Chansey's defensive stats, investing in HP is generally not efficient, but it is an option to survive certain attacks. For example, running 152 HP EVs helps Chansey tank a +1 Outrage from Adamant Mega Charizard X and avoid the 2HKO from Adamant Garchomp's Outrage. A Bold nature should always be used to somewhat patch up Chansey's terrible Defense, as she already has sufficient Special Defense. Eviolite is required to allow Chansey to take both physical and special hits better. Natural Cure allows Chansey to absorb status ailments for the team, immediately healing Chansey after she switches out. Usage Tips Considering that Chansey can take any special attack with ease, she should be sent in on Pokemon such as Greninja, Mega Charizard Y, Volcarona, and Mega Gardevoir to sponge powerful STAB moves that her teammates cannot afford to take. At the same time, Chansey must be wary of special attackers that could carry Taunt or Trick such as Serperior, Rotom-W, and Latios. Chansey is an excellent status absorber thanks to Natural Cure, which removes status ailments inflicted by the likes of Scald, Thunder Wave, and Toxic that would otherwise cripple your team's sweeper. Always scout for potential Knock Off users with your Mega Evolution so that Chansey will not lose her ability to tank hits for your team. If running Swagger, it is a relatively a safe option for Chansey to use because she is usually sent in on powerful special attackers and therefore doesn't have to fear a powerful physical attack; the chip damage from the foe hurting itself will also be extremely useful for taking it down. Using Swagger can help Chansey overcome Calm Mind users such as Suicune and Sylveon, which cannot be worn down with Toxic due to their access to Rest and Heal Bell. With a bit of luck on your side, Swagger can even be used to take down Aegislash variants lacking Substitute. Team Options Both Slowbro and Mega Slowbro are fantastic partners that can form a solid defensive core with Chansey due to Slowbro's ability to take on powerful Fighting-types with ease while also dispatching Talonflame, which would otherwise be a huge threat to Chansey. Gliscor really enjoys Thunder Wave support from Chansey so that it can take advantage of slower foes by freely setting up Substitute and proceed to threaten the opposing team with Guillotine. In return, Chansey can help take special attacks such as Scald and Ice Beam without having much worry of being burned or frozen due to Natural Cure. Bulky Grass-types such as Mega Venusaur and Ferrothorn can form an effective core with Slowbro and Chansey; they all have access to some form of recovery, which allows them to wear down each other's checks and counters through residual damage by forcing constant switches. Powerful wallbreakers such as Heracross and Mega Heracross appreciate paralysis support from Chansey, as they are often outsped and taken out before being able to deal massive damage to the opposing team. As Mega Sableye really struggles to deal with Fairy-types, Chansey can help with removing them due to her ability to come in on most Fairy-type attacks, such as Mega Gardevoir's Pixilate-boosted Hyper Voice. Due to Skarmory's high Defense and superb defensive typing, it is an excellent partner for Chansey, taking on physical attackers that threaten her. Mega Gengar can trap opposing Chansey on stall teams and cripple physical attackers with Will-O-Wisp. Despite stacking a Fighting-type weakness with Chansey, Tyranitar is a decent partner for its ability to Pursuit trap Mega Gengar and potential Trick users such as Latios.

Chansey's superb defenses thanks to Eviolite allow her to be an excellent wall, and a key player on any stall-inclined team. With her vast support movepool, she can pass enormous Wishes, cripple opponents, stall with Toxic, and remove status afflictions from the team with Heal Bell. Chansey can also remove any status dealt to herself by simply switching due to Natural Cure. This gives her incredible staying power and the ability to outstall opposing walls. Against such walls, she may then proceed to Toxic as the opponent is forced to switch, lest they face the slow spiral to death while beating futilely against Chansey's awesome bulk supported by Soft-Boiled. Note that even with Toxic Spikes support, Toxic is still a great move to deal with Flying-types and Levitate users such as Lugia and Giratina-O. The choice between Wish, Seismic Toss, and Heal Bell is dependent on how well Chansey's teammates can recover health and absorb status. Teams that are vulnerable to crippling statuses such as poison, paralysis, and burn appreciate Heal Bell, while teams that lack recovery moves benefit greatly from Wish. Snatch may also be used on Chansey as it allows her to take down mono-attacking Arceus (most notably Arceus-Dark) by stealing Refreshes and Recovers; if the Arceus is poisoned, Chansey can repeatedly abuse Snatch to prevent Arceus from removing its status or recovering its HP. This also allows her to steal Calm Mind boosts to further increase Chansey's Special Defense. Should a team be comfortable forgoing Wish's recovery or Heal Bell's status removing support, Seismic Toss should be used for its value in breaking down poisoned enemies that abuse recovery moves, most notably Lugia. In order to use Chansey effectively, you must always seize opportunities to switch into special sweepers that cannot significantly damage her. Entry hazard support greatly aids Chansey in stalling out sweepers; therefore, Spikers such as Forretress, Ferrothorn, and Skarmory make great partners for Chansey. Do not be afraid to switch Chansey in to certain weaker physical attacks, either. Due to awesome bulk with Eviolite, she can survive harsh beatings provided that there are few entry hazards. Chansey should be confident in switching into the likes of Palkia, Dialga, Kyogre, Reshiram, defensive Groudon, Latias, Latios, and mixed attacking Giratina-O, forcing them to switch out in fear of Toxic. Likewise, Chansey can stall out opposing walls such as Lugia with Toxic or force a switch. It should be noted that the inability to use Leftovers is a considerable loss when choosing Chansey over Blissey. While Chansey can take certain hits that Blissey cannot, Chansey is easily worn down by entry hazards and other forms of residual damage such as sandstorm, poison, and burn. It also takes away the opportunity to heal behind Protect. Additionally, Blissey can competently use special attacks such as Flamethrower and Ice Beam to take down certain threats, or even utilize them with Calm Mind, whereas Chansey's pathetic base 35 Special Attack is unusable. As for teammates, Lugia can easily take powerful hits from physical sweepers, use Reflect, and Whirlwind them away. Ho-Oh can address any Calm Mind abusers looking to set up on Chansey by hitting them with a powerful STAB Sacred Fire or Brave Bird. Giratina and Giratina-O are immune to any Fighting-type move thrown at Chansey, while she provides them with a Ghost immunity and the ability to sponge other powerful special attacks that they fear. Pokemon that lack recovery moves greatly appreciate Chansey's ability to pass Wish; examples range from sweepers such as Palkia and Zekrom to walls such as Groudon and Ferrothorn. Due to Chansey's massive HP, Wish recipients will recover 321 HP, often restoring them to full health.

Chansey makes for an excellent Wish supporter, with ridiculous amounts of HP, excellent Special Defense, and Eviolite to help remedy its poor Defense. Wish allows Chansey to keep themself healthy, while being able to fully heal the HP of most of its teammates, due to Chansey's high HP stat. Protect is useful for scouting for Trick, Fighting-type STAB moves, and guaranteeing that you regain HP with Wish. Alternatively, Soft-Boiled can be used to make Chansey regain health immediately, instead of waiting a turn; Chansey should run Soft-Boiled if you want to make ensure that Chansey's primary goal is to wall threats and its secondary objective is to heal teammates. Toxic allows Chansey to stall out many Pokemon, and is Chansey's main way of taking down Pokemon. Seismic Toss prevents Chansey from being completely neutralized by Taunt, and lets Chansey have a consistent way of dealing damage. The EV spread maximizes Chansey's HP stat and Chansey's Defense stat; with Eviolite, Chansey becomes bulky enough to take some neutral STAB physical attacks. An alternative EV spread of 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpD can be used, and is quite viable. However, the one problem with this EV spread is that you will not be giving your teammates more HP with Wish, but if your team isn't too reliant on Wish passing, this spread works excellently. Chansey makes for an excellent Stealth Rock user, as it can easily set them up with their excellent bulk in conjunction with Eviolite. Rain support can prove to be excellent for Chansey, as it gives them a chance to PP stall Chandelure with Fire Blast. Since Chansey has a decent Defense stat in conjunction with Eviolite, a Counter set is viable as it can surprise physical attackers attempting to 2HKO Chansey. Thunder Wave can be run on Chansey for hitting things such as Genesect who may switch in expecting Toxic. Toxic Spikes support is Chansey's best bet when dealing with Chandelure. It takes numerous turns for Chandelure to be able to break through Chansey's Special Defense, and Toxic Spikes punishes every turn that Chandelure stays in. Physical walls such as Gliscor and Skarmory can take physical hits for Chansey, while the blob takes all special hits aimed at the aforementioned Pokemon.

Set Description Chansey can switch into Mewtwo and other special attackers and attempt to land Sing, as Mewtwo usually cannot risk being put to sleep. Seismic Toss threatens consistent damage on every foe in the tier, 4HKOing or 5HKOing most foes and forcing predictable recovery turns from the likes of Starmie, Alakazam, Mewtwo, and Mew, which can be exploited to switch in strong physical attackers, such as Snorlax, Rhydon, and Tauros. However, Seismic Toss can be exploited by Rhydon, as its Substitute is not broken by the move. Ice Beam 2HKOes Ground-types and threatens freeze on unparalyzed foes; however, it has far less PP than Seismic Toss and does pathetic damage to boosted Mewtwo. Chansey is usually better off just paralyzing the foe than fishing for freeze. Thunder Wave allows Chansey to spread paralysis across the opposing team, with Pokemon such as Tauros, Starmie, and Alakazam being completely crippled if they become paralyzed, and paralyzed Mew and Mewtwo becoming being far more vulnerable to physical attackers such as Snorlax and Rhydon. Chansey is one of the best status spreaders and Mewtwo switch-ins in the tier, so Pokemon that want Mewtwo and other Special attackers paralyzed, such as Cloyster, Tauros, Rhydon, Snorlax, and Sandslash, make great partners to Chansey. Exeggutor and Zapdos make good switch-ins to Mew, which may otherwise cause Chansey issues. Exeggutor can also switch into Rhydon, which threatens Seismic Toss Chansey immensely. Pokemon that get forced out by strong Psychic-types, such as Tauros, Rhydon, and Cloyster, also make good teammates to Chansey, as Chansey can switch into special attackers for them.

Set Description Light Screen lets Chansey be a proper wall to Special attackers, taking only 26.4% maximum from Mewtwo's +4 Psychic and only 27.8% maximum from Slowbro's +6 Surf, allowing Chansey to stall them out of attacking PP. However, Chansey can be overwhelmed by Special drops and critical hits from Mewtwo or potentially get stalled out of Soft-Boiled PP, as it does not have enough PP to stall both Mewtwo and Slowbro. Seismic Toss is Chansey's best option for solid damage across the entire tier and to force recovery turns for Pokemon such as Mewtwo, Alakazam, and Starmie, which can be taken advantage of by the likes of Snorlax, Tauros, and Rhydon. Ice Beam allows Chansey to hit Ground-types for super effective damage, notably 2HKOing Rhydon, which otherwise is only 5HKOed by Seismic Toss and can set up a Substitute freely. Ice Beam also lets Chansey fish for freeze against unparalyzed foes. Thunder Wave allows Chansey to hamstring fast threats such as Tauros, Starmie, and Alakazam, and paralysis makes the omnipotent Mew and Mewtwo much more vulnerable to strong physical attackers such as Snorlax, Tauros, and Rhydon. Light Screen Chansey makes a great partner to Pokemon that appreciate status on fast foes such as Tauros, Rhydon, Cloyster, and Snorlax. These Pokemon are usually threatened by strong Psychic-types, which Chansey can switch into. Light Screen Chansey is much more of a dedicated stall set than Sing Chansey, so Pokemon with high longevity, such as Reflect Snorlax, Cloyster, Exeggutor, and even Aerodactyl, can make good partners to it.

Reflect lets Chansey take on physical attackers, notably Snorlax, more effectively. Seismic Toss deals consistent damage and puts pressure on paralyzed foes. Its 32 PP also helps it win certain PP wars, such as against opposing Chansey when paralyzed. Ice Beam is an alternative, letting Chansey fish for freezes on opposing Chansey, Snorlax, and other big threats. It also targets foes weak to Ice, notably threatening Exeggutor, which can otherwise use Rest to stall out Seismic Toss, and 2HKOing Rhydon, though it does minimal damage to foes with high Special bulk, like Snorlax and Alakazam, making Chansey extremely passive once Freeze Clause has activated. Soft-Boiled serves as reliable recovery, and Thunder Wave lets Chansey spread paralysis and assist with speed control. However, Chansey must be wary of Substitute. This set acts as a check to Snorlax, as Reflect and its immunity to Body Slam paralysis let it wall most variants; it can easily switch in, set up Reflect, and proceed to force Snorlax to switch out or use Rest, freeing up teammates for other roles. Given that Snorlax will be seen on every team, often as an early-game wallbreaker, Chansey is a natural partner to the variety of Pokemon that struggle against it, like Alakazam, physical-centric Snorlax sets, and Starmie. This is especially notable since Reflect Snorlax is a shakier check to Snorlax in Stadium OU given the increased prevalence of Ice Beam. However, Snorlax lands critical hits twice as often in this format, making Reflect less effective against it. Beyond Snorlax, Chansey naturally lures in a lot of physical attackers, so it can use the opportunity to set up Reflect and gain momentum to paralyze another foe or fish for a freeze. Tauros and Persian still threaten Chansey through Reflect thanks to their high critical hit chances, but these fast physical attackers rely on their Speed to function, so they are very afraid of Thunder Wave. If Chansey is running Seismic Toss, Rhydon is an especially bad matchup. Chansey cannot break its Substitute in one hit, while Rhyhdon can repeatedly hit Chansey with Earthquake until it gets a critical hit, which is about an 11.3% chance in Stadium and is an almost guaranteed OHKO. Chansey also doesn't enjoy facing Alakazam and Starmie: they can paralyze Chansey with Thunder Wave, and while it can force them to waste PP and threaten them with its own Thunder Wave, they will usually win one-on-one. Chansey must manage its status carefully. Once paralyzed, it's a very shaky answer to opposing physical attackers, including Snorlax, the Pokemon teams often rely on it to check; it also becomes extremely vulnerable to Rhydon. However, being paralyzed does make it immune to freeze, helping it beat opposing unparalyzed Chansey when carrying Ice Beam.

Thunderbolt and Ice Beam make up the classic BoltBeam combo, which provides unresisted coverage. Ice Beam notably 2HKOes Rhydon and hits common foes like Exeggutor and Zapdos super effectively. It's crucial in helping Chansey fend off opposing unparalyzed Chansey and Snorlax in freeze wars, allowing it to avoid getting PP stalled. Thunderbolt primarily targets Water-types like Starmie and Cloyster. Soft-Boiled serves as reliable recovery, while Thunder Wave lets Chansey act as speed control, notably preventing speedy physical attackers like Tauros and Persian from trying to break through Chansey freely. Chansey's combination of BoltBeam and Thunder Wave makes it threatening to the majority of Stadium OU and thus a natural fit for teams looking for the extra coverage. This set notably beats Starmie very consistently. Due to its lack of Seismic Toss, Alakazam takes minimal damage from Chansey's attacks and can easily break through Chansey with Special drops, critical hits, and full paralysis from Thunder Wave. Even if it runs out of Psychic PP, it will usually win a PP war. Variants carrying Substitute can be troublesome, as they can use it to dodge status and try to break through Chansey more safely. A check to Alakazam such as Double-Edge Exeggutor can assist in this matchup, but Substitute Alakazam has very limited attacking PP and is easily stalled. Chansey must be very careful about taking paralysis; as much as it likes the immunity to being frozen, it's completely destroyed by Snorlax afterwards, so it must manage its status carefully or have a partner that can switch into Snorlax for it.

With Stadium buffing Substitute to block status moves, notably Thunder Wave, Chansey can make use of it to improve many of its matchups at the cost of passivity. Since no unboosted special attack can break through its Substitutes in one hit, Chansey can wall paralyzed Alakazam and Starmie without risking paralysis or Special drops. It can then proceed to PP stall Psychic; its Substitutes also exceed 100 HP and thus require Alakazam and other Seismic Toss users to use up two Seismic Toss PP trying to break through them. However, Chansey is outsped by these Psychic-types, so it relies on its teammates to paralyze them, and thus unable it's to play in the early game much at all. Since Self-Destruct and Explosion KO the user when they connect with a Substitute in Stadium, Chansey can use it to block attempts by slower or paralyzed users. Seismic Toss is an excellent way for Chansey to spread consistent damage and pressure foes like the Psychic-types, though Ice Beam lets Chansey beat Rhydon with consistency. Ice Beam also allows Chansey to threaten foes like Chansey and Snorlax and avoid PP wars, while Substitute will prevent Chansey from getting statused by its foe. However, Ice Beam does negligible damage to Starmie and Lapras. Thunder Wave lets Chansey paralyze faster foes, primarily targeting speedy physical attackers like Tauros and Persian. Counter is a niche option on this set that can punish physical attackers. The most notable example is Snorlax, as sets lacking Earthquake or Amnesia can only break Chansey's Substitute in one hit by using Body Slam, forcing it to lose around 67% of its health. Additionally, Persian is OHKOed by Counter, and Tauros will only survive on one HP when at full health. Counter also OHKOes Snorlax and Tauros if they use Body Slam when Substitute is not up. Chansey is reliant on opposing Psychic-types and Chansey being paralyzed for its Substitute to protect it, leaving paralysis support essential. Thunder Wave from one's own Alakazam and Starmie as well as Stun Spore from Exeggutor work effectively in this regard. Chansey should avoid getting paralyzed, as paralysis makes it less consistent against Alakazam and Starmie and leaves Chansey easily overwhelmed by physical attackers like Snorlax and Rhydon.
