Froslass Movesets & Competitive Sets

Froslass's great Speed and typing make it a potent Spikes setter, as it's capable of pressuring common spinners such as Sandslash. Taunt prevents Pokemon like Mareanie from recovering and also allows Froslass to keep its Spikes on the field against Defog users like Silvally-Fairy. Wallbreakers like Magmortar and Archeops greatly appreciate the Spikes Froslass sets, as it gives them an easier time breaking through Gigalith and Regirock, respectively. Pokemon like Regirock, Weezing, and Lanturn can switch into threats such as Lycanroc, Aggron, and Togedemaru that force out Froslass, respectively.

Triple Axel is a strong, albeit unreliable, STAB move. Icicle Crash is an option, as it's more reliable despite being weaker; it also avoids Rough Skin and Flame Body from the likes of Druddigon and Coalossal. Trick allows Froslass to cripple its answers such as Aromatisse, while Ice Shard allows it to revenge kill foes like Ribombee. Despite seeming odd on a set using a Choice item, Spikes lets Froslass take advantage of the many Pokemon it forces out. Froslass's subpar bulk means it appreciates being brought in via partners like Galarian Articuno, which also acts as a Defog deterrent and appreciates the Spikes Froslass sets. Pokemon like Quiver Dance Ribombee and Dragon Dance Charizard have an easier time cleaning late-game after Froslass has weakened down walls such as Regirock, Aromatisse, and Wishiwashi.

Possessing a blistering Speed stat and a ruthless dual STAB combination, Froslass is a strong Choice Band wallbreaker. With both of its powerful STAB attacks, Froslass has amazing neutral coverage that defensive cores can have trouble handling. Switcheroo cripples the few defensive counters to Froslass, which include Miltank and defensive Poliwrath. Ice Shard is great against offensive teams, revenge killing faster threats like Thwackey, Lilligant, and Alolan Dugtrio after some chip. Either of the latter two moves can be replaced by Spikes, as Froslass can easily set multiple layers thanks to the free turns it generates forcing switches. Choice Band Froslass generally fits well on offensive builds, but it must be noted that Poltergeist has negative synergy with Knock Off users. Due to its poor defenses, Froslass appreciates VoltTurn users who can safely bring it onto the field. Offensive pivots like Morpeko and Silvally formes can lure in Pokemon like Palossand and Altaria, respectively, bringing Froslass in safely to immediately threaten them. Defensive pivots including Articuno and Clefairy, which are able to take a hit and pivot out, so Froslass comes in unharmed. With its amazing ability to weaken walls and revenge kill wallbreakers, Froslass leaves ample opportunity for sweepers like Klinklang, Galarian Rapidash, and Silvally-Dark to set up. If bulkier teams intend on using Froslass, keeping it healthy through entry hazard removers like Morpeko and Coalossal is essential. Knock Off absorbers like Alcremie and Miltank also play important roles in giving Froslass backup when it's in danger.

With just about every great utility move needed and a great Speed tier, Froslass is a great suicide lead that facilitates setup sweepers. Froslass runs Focus Sash to guarantee at least one layer of Spikes. Froslass's Ghost typing and access to Taunt lets it easily shut Defog and Rapid Spin users alike. Destiny Bond lets it take down a foe with it, making it especially useful for bringing down wallbreakers like Klinklang and Silvally-Dark. It also pairs well with Taunt, forcing foes to attack it. Avalanche is its preferred attacking move, as its negative priority gives it a greater opportunity to take advantage of Destiny Bond. However, Icy Wind is also a solid option, as its ability to lower Speed makes taking advantage of the foe easier for its teammates. If Icy Wind is used, Froslass needs to instead run a Timid Nature with Special Attack investment. Froslass's suicide lead set will exclusively be seen on hyper offense teams looking for a reliable Spikes setter who can quickly provide momentum. The pressure put on from Spikes makes it easier for setup sweepers to secure KOs, so partners like Klinklang, Silvally-Poison, and Crustle love Froslass. Knock Off users like Thwackey, Gurdurr, and Uxie are able to remove Heavy-Duty Boots from the opposing side, making Spikes even more dangerous. Because entry hazard removers like Altaria and Articuno are inclined to enter the field with Spikes up, wallbreakers like Lycanroc-Midnight and Sawk immediately threaten these Defog users.

Froslass is a premier Spikes setter thanks to having one of the fastest Taunts in the metagame alongside a great STAB combination. It threatens common entry hazard removers like Altaria and Rotom and can use Taunt to block removal from other Pokemon like Articuno and Silvally-Poison. This also shuts down passive Pokemon like Miltank and Pyukumuku, which makes Froslass a solid stallbreaker. Froslass is also a capable revenge killer, as it outpaces the majority of the unboosted metagame, including threats like Jynx, Thievul, and Sawk. Spikes Froslass's combination of Speed and offensive utility makes it a great fit for offensive builds. Offensive Knock Off users like Thwackey, Sawk, and Kabutops make opposing Pokemon vulnerable to Froslass's Spikes. These wallbreakers also directly benefit from Spikes, as it can put foes in greater range of KOs. Other wallbreakers that love Spikes include Galarian Rapidash and the Silvally formes. These Pokemon also threaten Froslass checks like Alolan Persian and Miltank. Morpeko is a particularly nice partner, removing entry hazards with Rapid Spin and threatening Froslass checks like Poliwrath and Choice Scarf Rotom. Pivots love the extra chip damage from Spikes, so VoltTurn users like Silvally-Fighting, Manectric, and Flapple can both safely bring in Froslass and further damage walls like Qwilfish and Palossand.

Taunt prevents slower Defoggers from removing Spikes, while Destiny Bond is used in conjunction with Taunt to potentially force a trade with an opposing threat. Finally, the attacking move of choice comes down to personal preference. In most cases, the speed control that Icy Wind provides offers more benefit and utility to the hyper offense teams that Froslass is commonly run on. However, Shadow Ball can be used over Icy Wind if Magic Bounce users like Xatu are a concern or if Substitute variants of Calyrex-S pose an issue to the team Froslass is being utilized on. Cursed Body could prove situationally useful, especially when facing Choice-locked foes. Maximum Speed EVs and a Timid nature are utilized to guarantee that Froslass outspeeds as many threats as possible while almost always setting up at least one layer of Spikes. As Froslass is commonly featured on hyper offense teams, potential team options include offensive threats like Meteor Beam Eternatus and Zekrom, which pressure and overwhelm the Defoggers commonly found in the tier. Yveltal is another great partner to pair with Froslass, as it has access to Taunt, which can prevent slower Defoggers from removing any entry hazards Froslass set up. Additionally, Froslass can be paired with another entry hazard setter like Slurpuff or a screens setter like Grimmsnarl or Regieleki to form a utility core that allows a variety of setup sweepers like Dragon Dance Necrozma-DM, Geomancy Xerneas, Dragon Dance Zekrom, and Double Dance Groudon to sweep more easily. Air Balloon can be run on any of the aforementioned sweepers if the matchup against Sticky Web teams is a concern. Furthermore, it should be noted that Froslass struggles against leads on Sticky Web teams such as Slurpuff and Mental Herb Shuckle. Thus, pairing Froslass with a fast Rapid Spin user like Pheromosa or Regieleki would greatly benefit the removal of entry hazards and facilitate a potential sweep from one of Froslass's teammates.

Froslass is able to make a great suicide lead thanks to its high Speed stat and is great for its access to entry hazards, Taunt, and Destiny Bond. Spikes are great to pressure switch-ins and get chip damage on the opponent's Pokemon. Taunt enable Froslass to shut down other Pokemon from getting up Stealth Rock, Toxic Spikes, or Spikes. Destiny Bond can be used to take down a Pokemon with it. Shadow Ball allows Froslass to 2HKO Hatterene that would otherwise bounce Spikes back. Froslass should be used as a lead most of the time to get up Spikes and try to take a Pokemon down with it with Destiny Bond. It can also be saved for later in the game to stop common Rapid Spin users such as Excadrill from getting rid of Spikes thanks to its Ghost typing. Stealth Rock setters such as Mamoswine and Piloswine work great with Froslass to form an entry hazard-stacking duo to pressure Pokemon from being able to switch in and out, as well as making it easier for Cloyster and Weavile to sweep. Wallbreakers and setup sweepers such as Mamoswine, Kyurem-B and Cloyster appreciate Froslass's Spikes to chip down the opposing team and make them easier to get rid of. However, Froslass will struggle to set up Spikes later in the game if there are entry hazards down that can break its Focus Sash, so partners such as Avalugg and Galarian Mr. Mime go well with it. Froslass also struggles against Pokemon that can attack and KO it with priority moves like Aegislash, so partners such as Galarian Darmanitan and Lapras are needed, as they can take care of it.

Froslass's high speed makes it a particularly effective user of Spikes, always getting at least one layer up when teams lack a faster Pokémon. Spikes allows Froslass to pressure opposing teams by punishing switching, and wearing down opposing Pokemon. Taunt ensures that Defog users like Rotom-H, Volcanion and Corviknight, will not be able remove the Spikes, as well as blocking entry hazards and status from the likes of Ferrothorn and Toxapex. Icy Wind offers Froslass valuable speed control, ensuring that setup sweepers like Volcarona can't use it as setup fodder, and also allows Froslass to bring down faster targets with Destiny Bond the following turn. Destiny Bond also pairs well with Taunt, since Taunt forces foes to attack Froslass directly. Will-O-Wisp is also an option as it cripples Pokemon like Bisharp and Tyranitar that could play around Destiny Bond. Cursed Body can potentially cripple Choice-Locked Pokemon like Weavile and Zarude, giving its teammates the opportunity to set up. Offensive Pokemon like Gengar, Dragapult, Spectrier, Mimikyu, and Blacephalon appreciate the Froslass’s Spikes support, which allows them to KO foes more easily. For example, Gengar can benefit from Spikes wearing away at Specially Defensive Tyranitar to the point that Focus Blast can KO it. Blacephalon and Spectrier benefit from Spikes wearing their checks like Drapion and Heatran allowing them to sweep Poison and Steel teams late-game. Spectrier also appreciates Will-O-Wisp Froslass spreading burns in the opposing teams if running Hex. Dragapult, Mimikyu, and Aegislash appreciate Spikes support to overwhelm physically defensive Pokémon such as Toxapex, Ferrothorn, and Hippowdon. Aegislash deals with Clefable and Hatterene which are unaffected by Spikes. Runerigus forms an entry hazard-stacking core with Froslass, with the former providing Stealth Rock and Toxic Spikes

This is the only set Froslass should ever use. Spikes and Taunt are non-negotiable; Spikes is the crux of the set, as the ability to deal indirect damage to the grounded Pokemon in Ubers is an amazing asset to any team. Taunt prevents a multitude of dangerous Pokemon from setting up, and stops others from laying entry hazards. This set also functions as a decent anti-lead, as getting off one layer of hazards and using Taunt against the opposing lead is quite a likely scenario. The combination of Icy Wind and Shadow Ball can be used to 2HKO Deoxys-S. Ice Beam can be used to 2HKO Groudon and OHKO Rayquaza; however, against Rayquaza, Froslass should first use Spikes and then Icy Wind, as it 2HKOes Rayquaza if it decides to use Dragon Dance. If Rayquaza decides to attack right off the bat, at least it won't be able to boost its Speed. Destiny Bond can prove fatally annoying for the opponent; with a layer of Spikes down, Froslass can use Destiny Bond for up to eight turns, all whilst the opponent switches around trying to find a way to KO Froslass. Taunt should be used against slower Pokemon to prevent them from using Toxic or Will-O-Wisp to break Froslass's Focus Sash. Destiny Bond is also useful to revenge kill Extreme Killer Arceus without a Speed-boosting nature if Deoxys-S is not a concern. The Special Attack EVs are needed to get the aforementioned 2HKOs and OHKOs. Maximum Speed is needed to outspeed Terrakion and Speed-creeping Arceus; investing in bulk doesn't help Froslass survive anything. Leads are said to be non-existent in BW. However, with the fall in usage of Scizor in Ubers, Froslass can lead more often than not. The only semi-common leads Froslass should avoid are Tyranitar and Darkrai. A fast Groudon with Stealth Rock and an auxiliary Fire-type move makes a good partner, as it can set up Stealth Rock, outspeed and OHKO all Ubers spinners, and deal with Tyranitar. Froslass needs another sturdy Ghost-type team mate to spinblock after it inevitably bites the dust; Giratina-O is a good candidate, as it works very well on sun teams. A Choice Scarf Genesect can lead against Darkrai and bring it down to its Focus Sash or outright KO it with U-turn. If another Pokemon comes in to absorb U-turn, it is more than likely Froslass can then come in and do its job.

This set allows Froslass to work on a hail team to her full potential. With access to STAB Blizzard, Froslass is able to dish out massive damage to common Pokemon weak to Ice-type attacks, such as Garchomp, Zapdos, Tornadus, Thundurus, Landorus, and Latios. Shadow Ball allows Froslass to hit Pokemon that resist Blizzard, such as Metagross, and Pokemon that are weak to Ghost-type attacks, such as Chandelure, Cresselia, and Jellicent. The third move is a toss-up between Taunt and Destiny Bond. Taunt allows Froslass to shut down defensively based Pokemon such as Amoonguss and Cresselia, but falls short if the opponent carries a Mental Herb. Destiny Bond is an interesting move that can be used in conjunction with Focus Sash, taking down massive threats in one shot. Finally, Protect is used to shield Froslass while letting her partner take down common threats. Froslass's EVs are straightforward but effective. With a Timid nature and maximum investment in Speed, she can outrun anything with less than 110 base Speed while Speed tying with common Pokemon such as Latios. With a Focus Sash, Froslass is able to take hits from anything and dish out at least one powerful Blizzard before going down. It also prevents Froslass from being KOed by Latios's Draco Meteor before it can retaliate with Blizzard for an OHKO. However, with Tyranitar running rampant in the VGC 2012 metagame, it can often go to waste. An Ice Gem-boosted Blizzard is incredibly strong and allows Froslass to OHKO many threats, but leaves Froslass wide open to attacks. Snow Cloak should be used over Cursed Body, Froslass's Dream World ability, to make it harder for attacks to hit Froslass under the hail. Paired with a Focus Sash, Froslass can often be frustrating to take out. Froslass should obviously be paired with Abomasnow to increase Blizzard's accuracy and take advantage of the hail; Blizzard's 70% accuracy is awfully unreliable and should be avoided outside of hail unless absolutely necessary. Froslass and Abomasnow can spam Blizzard repeatedly without having to worry about it missing.
