Analysis

Furfrou's best attempt is to force out a weakened physical attacker, induce status upon whatever Pokemon is switching in, and then pivot out into a teammate. While this overlapping of roles as an offensive pivot is somewhat unique to Furfrou, the wallbreaking and setup sweeping potential of other Normal-types such as Stoutland, Drampa, Zangoose, and Dodrio is far greater than Furfrou trying to slowly whittle its foes down over time. Furfrou's niche also isn't very useful and therefore is difficult to build a team around.

Analysis

Moves U-turn allows Furfrou to pivot out while still threatening heavy damage against targets like Silvally-Dark and Exeggutor. Surf is worthwhile for 2HKOing Golem, which otherwise takes little from Furfrou's Normal- and Bug-type coverage. Sucker Punch opens an opportunity for Furfrou to revenge kill weakened faster threats like Kadabra and Choice Scarf Chatot. Toxic instead can be chosen to wear down physical walls like Gourgeist-XL and Poliwrath that Furfrou cannot break otherwise. Facade is a noteworthy option to capitalize on if Furfrou is afflicted with status, but this attack is usually too situational and less rewarding in comparison to the other coverage. Set Details A Choice Band and Jolly nature give Furfrou the chance to outspeed and OHKO multiple threats like Swanna and Electivire. Despite having a Jolly nature and lack of Special Attack investment, Surf still 2HKOes every relevant Golem set, which is the only target it is meant for. Usage Tips Thanks to its great Speed and physical bulk, Furfrou functions great early-game as a scout and lead. Furfrou can safely U-turn on possible entry hazard setters like Golem and Torterra, and the damage may determine if the targets are running defensive or wallbreaking sets. Using U-turn in general is usually safe, but you should try avoiding unnecessary residual damage from Rocky Helmet Mawile and entry hazards by either hard switching instead or using U-turn only as an opportunity to bring in anti-entry hazard teammates. Frailer setup sweepers like Z-Mirror Move Swanna and Nasty Plot Simipour have a chance to survive a Furfrou's Return at full, but they are guaranteed to be OHKOed after Stealth Rock damage. Try not to risk Furfrou's health in these situations and plan to revenge kill these threats after they have taken Stealth Rock or similar damage; try using U-turn first before revenge killing with Return. Furfrou's niche coverage in Surf, Sucker Punch, and Toxic can be used to capitalize on otherwise threatening checks like Golem, Kadabra, and Pyukumuku. However, locking into these attacks can make Furfrou vulnerable to setup sweepers like Leafeon, Combusken, and Pawniard, so only risk these attacks when appropriate. If needed, Furfrou can switch into physical attackers like Electivire, Rapidash, Leafeon, and Komala to force them out, but risking Furfrou's health jeopardizes its role as a potential late-game cleaner. This is even more relevant if the latter two examples use Knock Off, as Furfrou relies heavily on its Choice Band for adequate damage. As a cleaner, Furfrou has no trouble breaking past weakened offensive Pokemon like Simisage and Silvally-Dragon, but you should make sure Pokemon that resist or are immune to Normal like Bronzor, Crustle, and Dusclops are significantly worn down or already dealt with. Team Options Furfrou works great on a VoltTurn core with the support of offensive pivots such as Electivire, Rotom-S, Silvally-Dragon, and Silvally-Dark. Silvally-Dark is also notable for trapping Bronzor, Metang, and Dusclops, which Furfrou cannot break on its own but are conveniently weak to Silvally-Dark's Pursuit. To help with physical walls like Golem and Mawile, Furfrou can U-turn out to wallbreakers such as Exeggutor, Torterra, and Beheeyem, which also appreciate that Furfrou may switch into physical revenge killers to them like Swanna and Pinsir if it needs to. Furfrou's susceptibility to faster attackers means it can be revenge killed by Kadabra, Raichu, and Choice Scarf Mr. Mime, so try pairing it with defensive Pokemon like Bronzor, Torterra, and Komala. These walls can both help tank hits for Furfrou while also providing either Stealth Rock or additional U-turn pivoting with it. The opponent's entry hazards deter Furfrou from constantly pivoting, so try having entry hazard removal from Swanna, Silvally-Dragon, and Sandslash. Swanna is especially notable because it checks Fighting-types such as Combusken, Silvally-Fighting, and Poliwrath for Furfrou. Furfrou struggles to break past stall teams that can pack defensive walls like Avalugg and Pyukumuku, Ghost-types like Dusclops and Gourgeist-XL, and Toxic switch-ins like Altaria and Muk. Supporting Furfrou with stallbreakers like Taunt Simisear or Knock Off users like Mareanie and Leafeon can help in these matchups.

Analysis

Moves U-turn gains momentum and free turns for teammates, bringing them safely into the field, and makes a Furfrou a decent offensive pivot. Thunder Wave provides utility to the team, slowing down foes and supporting slow teammates, especially setup sweepers and cleaners. Return is Furfrou's main STAB move and best attacking tool against foes. Sucker Punch is a prediction-reliant priority attack, but it makes Furfrou harder to deal with for Pokemon such as Kadabra, which are faster but frail, and Electric-types such as Zebstrika and Raichu, which are immune to Thunder Wave. Sucker Punch can also allow Furfrou to pull off some more damage against a faster Pokemon if it can't afford to U-turn and is going to get sacrificed. Toxic can be used over Thunder Wave as an alternative way to cripple foes, as it puts a timer on troublesome setup sweepers and walls that find themselves switching in against Furfrou, such as Gourgeist-Super and Tangela. Set Details Maximum Speed investment with a Jolly nature allows Furfrou to spread Thunder Wave as fast as possible and outspeed common threats such as Simipour, Ninetales, and Leafeon. Maximum Attack investment is used to hit as hard as possible with Return and Sucker Punch, making Furfrou a bit more threatening as an attacker. Furfrou can run a more defensive spread to let it tank moves easily by moving Attack investment to HP. Leftovers makes up a bit for the lack of recovery and helps Furfrou with residual damage. Fur Coat is the signature ability of Furfrou, letting it tank physical attacks with ease, therefore helping its terrible Defense stat and making it a viable pivot. Usage Tips Furfrou works best on offensive teams, as its teammates can make up for its mediocre offensive presence and appreciate Furfrou's pivoting to create free switches. It can also fit on balanced teams, but they generally prefer bulkier walls and tanks, so it has to fight for a spot. Furfrou should be used as a pivot, checking physical attackers and crippling foes with Thunder Wave or U-turning out to a more favorable matchup, but it has to still be wary of residual damage and strong attackers, as it lacks recovery. U-turn works best if the opponent is going to switch, as otherwise the Pokemon that is brought in will have to take an attack because of Furfrou's high Speed. In these situations it is preferred to let a bulkier Pokemon tank the upcoming hit. U-turn should be used when Furfrou happens to be slower than the opponent's Pokemon, as otherwise Furfrou should use one of its other attacks to keep its teammates from taking unnecessary damage. U-turn also has to be used early-game to gain momentum after baiting in common Pokemon such as Golem, Misdreavus, and Pelipper and to create free turns for teammates. Furfrou should pivot into physical attacks that teammates can't take. Return is the preferred move to spam against foes to wear them down, as Sucker Punch is weak and risky and should be used only to get out of sticky situations. Furfrou, thanks to its high Speed, alright Attack, and access to priority, can be brought in to revenge kill an opposing threatening Pokemon. Team Options Thanks to its high Speed, good defenses, and access to U-turn, Furfrou can create VoltTurn cores with Pokemon such as Raichu and Pelipper. Pelipper also provides entry hazard removal support, which is appreciated by offensive teams in general. Entry hazard setters such as Crustle and Roselia are good in tandem with Furfrou, as entry hazard support is useful to weaken Furfrou's checks and counters and pressure the opponent's Pokemon, especially if running a VoltTurn core. Because of Furfrou's lack of recovery, Defog and Rapid users such as Pelipper and Armaldo are appreciated. Pursuit trappers such as Pawniard can be brought in by U-turn after Furfrou has baited in Ghost-types, and can KO or trap them. Strong setup sweepers, such as Leafeon and Ninetales, appreciate pivot support from Furfrou to receive a free turn to set up. Furfrou's damage output isn't that high, so wallbreakers such as Simipour and Flareon help deal with bulky Pokemon. Slower Pokemon such as Marowak and the aforementioned Flareon appreciate Thunder Wave support from Furfrou to slow down foes, easing their job as wallbreakers or sweepers.

Analysis

Furfrou is a great wallbreaker with its solid Attack, Speed, and coverage moves to take down common walls. U-turn gives Furfrou the ability to pivot out from the likes of Bronzor, Dusclops, and Lairon, bringing in a teammate that matches up favorably against them. Sucker Punch is great for picking up KOs against faster foes like Swoobat, Persian, and Electabuzz after some chip damage; however, this is usually for endgame scenarios, as Furfrou wants to avoid being taken advantage of if it's locked into Sucker Punch. Iron Tail allows Furfrou to 2HKO common switch-ins such as, Gigalith and Carbink. Toxic can be used to cripple Pokemon that Furfrou wouldn't be able to take on otherwise like Gourgeist-L and Hippopotas, giving Furfrou an easier time dealing with them later in the game. Furfrou forms a great pivoting core with Frogadier and Electabuzz, helping each other chip down their checks. It has trouble dealing with Steel-types like Bronzor, Klang, and Lairon, so it prefers to pivot out of them and bring in teammates like Pignite and Magmar. Hippopotas and Gourgeist-L can easily take on Furfrou, making it rely on partners like Vanilluxe and Politoed to come in and force them out. Furfrou appreciates Knock Off users like Servine, Scraggy, and Simipour, since they can weaken physical walls that rely on Eviolite like Quilladin and Hippopotas. Physical cleaners like Shell Smash Huntail, Dragon Dance Scraggy, and Choice Scarf Krokorok appreciate Furfrou's ability to break through physical walls like Carbink, Swalot, and Duosion for them.
