Iron Jugulis Movesets & Competitive Sets

Iron Jugulis's combination of good support tools in Snarl and Tailwind, great offensive typing, and powerful Hurricane make it a versatile utility attacker that works well in rain. Snarl provides Iron Jugulis with a damage reduction option that not only supports its team but also gives it a favorable matchup against the likes of Calyrex-S and Terapagos. Hurricane's pairing with rain gives Iron Jugulis the ability to consistently threaten Pokemon like the Urshifu formes and Rillaboom. Tailwind is a strong speed control option to help support both itself and its teammates. The Speed investment along with Booster Energy allows Iron Jugulis to outspeed Choice Scarf Urshifu-R. The defensive investment allows Iron Jugulis to survive Flare Blitz from Koraidon in sun, Moonblast from non-Choice Specs Flutter Mane, and Thunderbolt from Assault Vest Raging Bolt. Tera Water provides Iron Jugulis with a better defensive typing against matchups like Calyrex-I and Urshifu-R. Iron Jugulis typically struggles versus powerful Electric-types like Miraidon and Booster Energy Raging Bolt, both of which threaten to OHKO it. Urshifu-R can also be a somewhat problematic matchup, threatening huge damage under rain with Surging Strikes and forcing Iron Jugulis to Terastallize. Assault Vest Kyogre is Iron Jugulis's best partner, providing rain for its Hurricane and benefitting greatly from Iron Jugulis's Tailwind. Kyogre's superb special bulk allows it to become untouchable on the special side when paired with Snarl, and, with Tera Grass, it can reliably deal with Electric-type threats. Urshifu-R is another great partner, as both it and Iron Jugulis are strong weather abusers that appreciate weather control, with Iron Jugulis covering for the Grass-types that Urshifu-R typically struggles against. Urshifu-R is a great beneficiary of Tailwind, which allows it to fire off fast Surging Strikes next to Iron Jugulis to exert offensive pressure. Iron Jugulis also pairs well with Incineroar thanks to Intimidate + Snarl being a particularly strong damage-reducing combination to cover a multitude of threats alongside Fake Out, which allows Iron Jugulis to set up Tailwind safely.

Snarl is helpful to slow down the plethora of strong special attackers in the format. Booster Energy allows Iron Jugulis to fire off fast attacks like Snarl into opposing special attackers and set up Tailwind more easily, as well as outspeed threats such as Chien-Pao. The bulk allows Iron Jugulis to survive a Extreme Speed from Choice Band Tera Normal Dragonite with Sword of Ruin active, as well as an Icicle Crash from a -1 Attack Chien-Pao. Tailwind paired with Iron Jugulis's high Speed allows it to easily give its team the Speed advantage in front of much faster threats. The defensive investment allows Iron Jugulis to live a Flare Blitz from Koraidon, Moonblast from Focus Sash Flutter Mane, or Volt Switch from Miraidon after a Snarl. The Speed investment paired with Booster Energy allows Iron Jugulis to outspeed Calyrex-S and Choice Scarf Urshifu-R. Tera Steel provides Iron Jugulis a strong defensive typing in rain while also giving key resistances to Ice- and Fairy-type moves like Icicle Crash from Chien-Pao and Moonblast from Flutter Mane. Tera Fire acts as a solid alternative, still providing resistances to Ice and Fairy but losing out on a multitude of other resistances and being a much weaker individual typing under rain. Even with these downsides, its lack of a Fighting weakness makes it better into certain matchups like Zamazenta-C and Iron Hands. Teambuilding Iron Jugulis typically struggles against strong Electric- and Ice-types like Miraidon and Calyrex-I that threaten to OHKO it. More defensive Pokemon that Iron Jugulis struggles to damage like Zamazenta-C and Grimmsnarl can also be difficult for it because they can ignore it without many repercussions. Kyogre is Iron Jugulis's best partner, providing rain for Iron Jugulis's Hurricane while benefiting greatly from Tailwind and Snarl; Kyogre survives three Astral Barrages from Calyrex-S and lives Volt Switch from Miraidon after a Snarl. Zacian-C also functions as a great partner, covering for most of the aforementioned checks to Iron Jugulis as well as having the ability to outspeed Choice Scarf Miraidon with Tailwind. These Pokemon also cover well for the Calyrex-I matchup, resisting Glacial Lance and firing off strong and consistent damage into it. Grass-types such as Amoonguss and Rillaboom work well with Iron Jugulis, providing Rage Powder and Fake Out, respectively, to give Iron Jugulis the opportunity to set up Tailwind while covering the problematic Miraidon matchup. Amoonguss also provides solid defensive coverage against threats like Zamazenta-C, resisting its Body Press and either redirecting its attacks or threatening it with Spore. Urshifu-R is also a great partner for Iron Jugulis on rain teams, benefiting from the Speed boost to fire off powerful rain-boosted Surging Strikes that can bulldoze through said bulky threats that Iron Jugulis typically struggles against.

Iron Jugulis finds a niche on Flying teams as a capable Choice Specs user thanks to is solid Speed and Special Attack enabling it to outpace and remove targets such as Gholdengo and Urshifu-R. Dark Pulse nails problematic Psychic- and Ghost-types such as Iron Crown, Ceruledge, and Gholdengo. Hurricane takes out Fighting- and Fairy-types like Okidogi and Primarina that could take on Dark Pulse. Fire Blast provides great coverage, enabling Iron Jugulis to beat Steel-types such as Corviknight and Iron Treads. Alternatively, Focus Blast allows Iron Jugulis to OHKO Kyurem and 2HKO Hisuian Goodra. Finally, Earth Power deals with Rock- and Fire-types like Glimmora, Hisuian Arcanine, and Heatran. Corviknight serves a crucial teammate, being able to safely pivot in Iron Jugulis with U-turn along with using Defog to remove Stealth Rock. Corviknight's Steel typing also lets it take on Fairy- and Ice-types that threaten Iron Jugulis such as Enamorus, Alolan Ninetales, and Articuno. Skarmory can take on physical Ice- and Rock-types like Weavile and Iron Boulder with its high Defense and Body Press. Gliscor easily takes on problematic Electric-types like Regieleki and Sandy Shocks while reliably beating down special walls such as Hisuian Goodra. Gliscor can also provide Stealth Rock to wear down checks like Assault Vest Tornadus-T and Assault Vest Iron Hands. Choice Scarf Landorus-T can similarly handle Electric-types like Raging Bolt along with dealing with Fire-types like Gouging Fire and Cinderace. Choice Scarf Enamrous provides a fast special attacker capable of removing faster threats like Choice Specs Greninja, Darkrai, and Choice Specs Dragapult while appreciating Iron Jugulis majorly hindering special walls like Hisuian Goodra and Clodsire. Enamorus can also use Healing Wish to heal Iron Jugulis back up in important matchups such as Ghost and Psychic if takes too much damage. Dragonite appreciates Iron Jugulis removing physical walls like Galarian Weezing, Sableye, and Forretress while being able to use Extreme Speed to pick of faster targets like Meowscarada and Latios that would otherwise beat Iron Jugulis. Assault Vest Tornadus-T can take on special attackers like Iron Moth and opposing Iron Jugulis while providing Knock Off to cripple bulky targets like opposing Assault Vest Tornadus-T and Alolan Muk. Moltres provides support through burn to chip down foes like specially defensive Corviknight and Articuno along with dealing with physical attackers like IronPress Zamazenta and Sneasler.

While not quite as powerful or versatile as its counterpart Hydreigon, Iron Jugulis fills a unique role due to its higher Speed and Flying-type STAB. Hurricane vs Air Slash: Hurricane secures KOs on Pokemon like Iron Bundle that Air Slash cannot, however, Air Slash is much less likely to miss, and the flinch chance can come in handy occasionally. Taunt: With Taunt, Iron Jugulis stops walls such as Clodsire from healing off its attacks, and prevents debilitating status that would otherwise cut its sweep short. Earth Power: Earth Power grants Iron Jugulis valuable coverage on most Pokémon that would not mind its main attacks, like Tinkaton. Flash Cannon: Flash Cannon is useful for hitting Fairy-types such as Flutter Mane for big damage. Flamethrower: Flamethrower provides super effective coverage on Steel-types that might otherwise cause issues for Iron Jugulis. Other Options Knock Off: While not doing much damage to many does due to Iron Jugulis's thoroughly average Attack stat, Knock Off can still help Iron Jugulis and its teammates by softening up defensive cores via item removal. Substitute: Substitute can be used to punish Spore attempts from the likes of Breloom and Brute Bonnet, as well as easing prediction by scouting switches. Focus Blast: Though unreliable due to its accuracy, Focus Blast is Iron Jugulis's best option to hit Kingambit. Tera Types Flying: Terastallizing into a Flying-type boosts Iron Jugulis's damage output with Air Slash and Hurricane, making it even more difficult to switch into while removing the weaknesses that come from its secondary Dark typing. Dark: A Dark-type Tera boosts Dark Pulse's damage considerably, and when coupled with its rather high flinch rate, a Tera Dark Iron Jugulis can prove quite difficult to handle for some teams. Steel: A Steel-type Tera grants Iron Jugulis a resistance to Fairy and Ice, improving its matchup with Flutter Mane and Iron Bundle and giving it STAB on Flash Cannon. Ground: Tera Ground gives Iron Jugulis an Electric-type immunity, allowing it to block Volt Switch from the likes of Rotom-W and Iron Hands while also giving it STAB on Earth Power.

With its good Speed and powerful STABs, Iron Jugulis lends itself nicely to use a Choice item set, setting itself apart from Hydreigon by virtue of its higher Speed at the cost of some power. Hurricane vs Air Slash: Hurricane offers Iron Jugulis an extremely powerful Flying-type STAB attack, though Air Slash is far more consistent due to its higher accuracy. Earth Power: Earth Power allows Iron Jugulis to hit otherwise irritating switch-ins like Magnezone and Tinkaton. Flash Cannon: Flash Cannon allows Iron Jugulis to punish Fairy-type switch-ins such as Flutter Mane, as well as the numerous Tera Fairy users in the BSS metagame. U-turn: U-turn allows Iron Jugulis to keep momentum for its team by scouting switches and pivoting out of disadvantageous matchups. Items Choice Specs: Choice Specs elevates Iron Jugulis's power, allowing it to wallbreak much more consistently.
