Mesprit Movesets & Competitive Sets

Nasty Plot turns Mesprit into a fairly powerful wallbreaker, being able to 2HKO most of the tier after a single boost. The last moveslot is fairly customizable; Shadow Ball is Mesprit's best move for Steel-types like Togedemaru and Galarian Stunfisk, but Thunderbolt is an effective way to threaten Flying- and Water-types like Charizard and Jellicent before Mesprit sets up. Colbur Berry is the preferred item, as it makes Mesprit harder to revenge kill with Dark-types like Sneasel and Absol and fare better against Fighting-types like Gallade. Life Orb is a more powerful item that might even remove the need for Mesprit to set up, but the lack of longevity is such that Mesprit is unlikely to have many chances to wallbreak. A Timid nature allows Mesprit to outspeed Modest Magmortar among other threats, but Modest can be run for more damage output. Whimsicott is a good partner because it can use U-turn to bring Mesprit in for easy setup opportunities on Pokemon such as Weezing. Due to Mesprit's lack of longevity, it often pairs well with a secondary wallbreaker like Magmortar or Archeops to keep up offensive pressure after Mesprit has been KOed. Sweepers and cleaners such as Ribombee and Lycanroc can make good use of Mesprit's wallbreaking to clean up the opposing team.

Choice Scarf lets Mesprit revenge kill Pokemon such as Sneasel and Cinccino. Many different teammates appreciate Healing Wish support from Mesprit, from recovery-lacking wallbreakers like Magmortar to sweepers looking to set up twice such as Silvally-Ghost. However, Trick can be run in this slot instead to cripple bulky Pokemon that otherwise wall Mesprit such as Jellicent and check bulky setup sweepers such as Uxie. Mesprit rarely has opportunities to guarantee a safe switch in and needs to be brought in when a teammate has been KOed, via good predictions, or using pivoting. Slow pivots such as Silvally-Fairy and Lanturn are great options to safely bring Mesprit in and form a VoltTurn core. This will ideally be supplemented with a strong wallbreaker such as Sneasel or Trevenant ready to be brought in on a convenient pivot to do some damage.

Shadow Ball is Mesprit's best way to hit Steel- and Psychic-types, U-turn eases Mesprit's reliance on predictions while gaining momentum in the process, and Trick can cripple switch-ins such as Articuno and Galarian Stunfisk. Choice Specs Mesprit is extremely prediction reliant, so having at least one of U-turn and Trick can be vital for a safer option that does not leave Mesprit Choice locked into an exploitable attack. Even with Dazzling Gleam, Dark-types greatly hinder Mesprit's ability to freely spam Psychic, so a solid Dark-type answer such as Silvally-Fairy or Aromatisse is important. Mesprit is not the strongest wallbreaker around, so entry hazard setters such as Froslass and Regirock are advised to supplement its damage output. Weaker cleaners such as Dragon Dance Charizard and Quiver Dance Ribombee are ideal Pokemon to make use of Mesprit's wallbreaking. Mesprit will also require a solid defensive core with blanket checks such as Jellicent, Sandaconda, and Weezing ready to cover the wide variety of threats capable of revenge killing Mesprit after minimal chip damage.

Mesprit's final moveslot is largely dependent on how badly you want Healing Wish on your team. U-turn is far more useful for keeping up momentum and preventing Mesprit from becoming too predictable, but Healing Wish can be an effective way to supplement setup sweepers such as Doublade. Mesprit's best qualities are its good speed for a Stealth Rock setter and favorable matchup against several entry hazard removers such as Sandslash. Despite this set's lack of defensive investment, having few weaknesses means it often has the time to set up Stealth Rock and fire off multiple attacks. Few weaknesses and access to U-turn allow Mesprit to keep up momentum in a way few Stealth Rock users can, making it an ideal pick for more offensive teams. Its inability to deal much damage to special walls or Steel-types means that wallbreakers such as Trevenant and Charizard make for good partners. Mesprit appreciates Pokemon that can punish U-turn, such as Rocky Helmet Druddigon and Coalossal, which can discourage Pokemon like Togedemaru from freely pivoting versus Mesprit. Mesprit can also opt for a more defensively oriented spread that runs both U-turn and Healing Wish while foregoing Dazzling Gleam.

Moves Mesprit makes for a decent offensive Stealth Rock setter thanks to its immense coverage options to threaten opposing Stealth Rock setters and entry hazard removers. Psychic is Mesprit's strongest STAB move, allowing it to deal with Pokemon like Passimian, Garbodor, Golbat, and Weezing. Thunder paired with Electrium Z can power through Pokemon that can give Mesprit trouble such as Incineroar, Xatu, and Blastoise. Thunderbolt is a more reliable option than Thunder and is still a decently powerful move after Mesprit uses its Z-Move. Energy Ball is the preferred fourth move to deal with bulky Water-types such as Vaporeon and Slowking as well as Stealth Rock setters like Rhydon, Seismitoad, and Palossand. Ice Beam is a good option to 2HKO Xatu, which gives Mesprit an easier time setting up Stealth Rock and means it doesn't have to use its Z-Move to beat Xatu. It also threatens other Stealth Rock setters such as Steelix and Druddigon as well as Dhelmise. Calm Mind can make Mesprit a more threatening wallbreaker at the expense of another coverage move. Set Details The given EV spread gives Mesprit as much of an offensive presence as possible, allowing it to outspeed offensive Decidueye and Speed tie with Braviary, Medicham, and Gallade. Electrium Z is used to power through Incineroar, Xatu, and bulky Water-types like Slowking, Blastoise, and Vaporeon, which can give it an easier time setting Stealth Rock. Levitate gives Mesprit an immunity to Ground-type moves and Spikes, which helps increase its longevity. Usage Tips Mesprit makes a decent lead option thanks to its good matchup against most Stealth Rock setters. While it should try to set Stealth Rock as soon as it can, Mesprit should aim to use Ice Beam or Thunder if the opponent's team has Xatu, as these moves can 2HKO Xatu and give it an easier time setting Stealth Rock. Try to save Mesprit's Z-Move for a weakened Incineroar or potential entry hazard remover such as Golbat, Xatu, or Blastoise, as the move severely dents all of them and gives Mesprit more opportunities to set up Stealth Rock. Be cautious, as Mesprit can only use Gigavolt Havoc once. While Mesprit is by no means frail, it should still be kept as healthy as possible so it can wallbreak later. It can easily come in against Fighting-types like Passimian or predicted Ground-type moves from Rhydon, Seismitoad, and Piloswine, but it must watch out for Passimian's Knock Off and U-turn. After setting Stealth Rock, Mesprit can aim to wallbreak for the rest of the match thanks to its high power and great coverage options. It can even potentially sweep late-game if it is running Calm Mind, but make sure any opposing Dark-types have been dealt with. Team Options Incineroar makes a good partner for Mesprit, as it can bring Mesprit into battle safely with U-turn and threatens Xatu and Slowking to give Mesprit more free reign on what to use its Z-Move against. Mesprit, in turn, can threaten defensive Water-types like Blastoise, Seismitoad, and Vaporeon for Incineroar. Mesprit's ability to threaten most Stealth Rock setters is greatly appreciated by Pokemon such as Magmortar, Aerodactyl, and Sneasel. Pokemon such as Passimian, Whimsicott, and Comfey enjoy Mesprit's ability to check Poison-types, while they help check Dark-types in return. Setup sweepers such as Scrafty, Calm Mind Delphox, and Samurott appreciate Mesprit's Stealth Rock support for providing important chip damage as they sweep late-game. Spikes setters like Garbodor and Ferroseed can also form a hazard stacking core with Mesprit, while they love Mesprit's ability to threaten most entry hazard removers from removing their Spikes with its near-perfect coverage. Garbodor also appreciates Mesprit having Levitate to dodge Earthquakes aimed at it.

Moves Psychic is Mesprit's most powerful and reliable STAB move and doubles as a decent late-game cleaning tool. Ice Beam is very useful for Mesprit to revenge kill Pokemon such as Archeops, Scyther, Swellow, and Lilligant, as well as hitting Xatu, Torterra, and Rhydon. Signal Beam is an alternative to hit Malamar, Musharna, Jynx, Shiftry, Lilligant, and opposing Mesprit. U-turn is great for retaining offensive momentum, notably letting Mesprit switch out safely on expected switches to a Pursuit user. Healing Wish brings a teammate back to full HP and cures it of status, at the cost of sacrificing Mesprit. Thunderbolt is another option to hit Water-types such as Floatzel, Prinplup, Mantine, and Pelipper, in addition to already hitting Archeops, Scyther, Swellow, and Xatu. Psyshock can be used over Psychic to hit targets such as Cryogonal, Assault Vest Magmortar, and Hariyama much harder. Trick is another option over Healing Wish to cripple a wall, but the utility of Healing Wish makes this inferior most of the time. Set Details Maximum Special Attack EVs allow Mesprit to hit as hard as possible, while maximum Speed EVs ensure it outspeeds as many Pokemon possible. A Modest nature is generally preferred for more attacking power, but Timid is another option to outspeed Jolly Rock Polish Rhydon. Choice Scarf boosts Mesprit's Speed significantly, allowing it to outspeed and revenge kill a good majority of the unboosted metagame. Levitate gives Mesprit a Ground immunity, which can allow it to switch in unscathed and makes it less prone to being worn down by entry hazards. Usage Tips Mesprit should almost always be brought in after a Pokemon has fainted or with a slow U-turn or Volt Switch. Mesprit should also take advantage of Levitate and its typing to pivot into Ground-, Fighting-, and Psychic-type attacks. Early-game, when answers to Mesprit are still around, use U-turn to switch out on their expected switch in to retain offensive momentum. Try to prioritize keeping Mesprit healthy for a Pokemon that it is able to revenge kill. Once Mesprit's checks and counters are weakened, clean up late-game with the appropriate move. Healing Wish should generally be used if an important teammate or setup sweeper has been significantly weakened. Team Options This set fits well on teams that need a fast Psychic-type to revenge kill faster Fighting-types such as Primeape while also keeping up offensive momentum, so partners such as Archeops and Klinklang pair well with it. Both also appreciate Healing Wish support, as it can bring the former out of Defeatist range and gives the latter a second shot at sweeping the opposing team. Skuntank is also a good partner due to its ability to threaten both Musharna and Mega Audino, both of which are bulky enough to take repeated hits easily from Mesprit. Entry hazard support is very beneficial for Mesprit, as it allows Mesprit to clean late-game with much more ease. Garbodor is an excellent partner, as it sets up hazards against several of Mesprit's answers such as Scyther and Mega Audino. Setup sweepers including Samurott, Shiftry, and Lilligant pair incredibly well with Mesprit, because all of them appreciate Healing Wish support. Swords Dance Mawile in particular is a great partner, as it switches into Scyther and Skuntank easily, while Mesprit takes care of problematic Pokemon such as Garbodor and Weezing and can give Mawile a second chance at sweeping with Healing Wish.

Moves Psychic is Mesprit's most powerful STAB move, capable of OHKOing or 2HKOing most neutral targets, one of the more notable ones being Assault Vest Magmortar after some prior damage. Ice Beam 2HKOes Steelix after switching in on one layer of Spikes or on Stealth Rock twice and almost always 2HKOes Skuntank with no prior damage. It also targets Xatu, which can otherwise switch in safely. Signal Beam is crucial for dealing significant damage to Psychic-types such as Malamar, Musharna, Jynx, and opposing Mesprit. Healing Wish lets Mesprit sacrifice itself to bring a teammate back to peak condition. Shadow Ball is a decent alternative over Signal Beam, notably hitting Bronzor and dealing more damage to other Psychic-types. U-turn is used to maintain offensive momentum, but Mesprit prefers just nailing switch-ins with its sheer power and coverage. Trick can be useful for crippling bulky Calm Mind users such as Musharna and Xatu. Psyshock can be used in place of Psychic to hit specially defensive Pokemon such as Lanturn, Hariyama, and Clefairy harder; however, it is typically a worse option because it's significantly weaker and harder to spam over the course of a battle. Set Details The given EV spread maximizes Mesprit's offensive capabilities, with a Modest nature being particularly crucial in order to achieve some important 2HKOs on Steelix and Skuntank. Choice Specs turns Mesprit into a fearsome wallbreaker, boosting its Special Attack to frightening levels. Timid is also an option for outspeeding special Skuntank in particular; however, this causes Mesprit to miss out on the aforementioned KOs. Usage Tips Mesprit is best brought in on Ground- and Fighting-type attacks such as Rhydon's Earthquake and Hariyama's Close Combat, though be wary of Megahorn from the former and Knock Off from the latter. While Psychic-resistant Pokemon are still around, throw out a coverage move in order to 2HKO them on the switch in. Be especially wary of using Psychic if Skuntank or Liepard is present because both can Pursuit trap Mesprit, dealing heavy damage if not knocking it out. After Dark- and Steel-types have been heavily weakened or eliminated, spam Psychic to ensure Mesprit 2HKOes or OHKOes every Pokemon in its way. Once Mesprit no longer is useful, use Healing Wish to heal a weakened teammate, particularly a setup sweeper, to give them a second shot at dismantling the opposition. Because of the ubiquity of its Stealth Rock set, Mesprit can also be used to catch foes off guard, dealing heavy damage in the process. Team Options Despite being able to 2HKO both Skuntank and Steelix, Mesprit still appreciates a Pokemon that can switch in and threaten these two, as prediction cannot always be relied on. Rhydon fits very well because it fears little from either of these Pokemon and even uses them as a way to either set up Stealth Rock or boost its Speed with Rock Polish. As was implied earlier, this set needs entry hazards up in order to achieve certain 2HKOs. Garbodor is a decent choice for a Spikes setter, as it soft checks the likes of Shiftry and Skuntank and also weakens Psychic-resistant Pokemon such as Steelix with Focus Blast. Steelix is a good choice because it shuts down Musharna and Mega Audino, both of which, if given the opportunity, can set up on Mesprit locked into any of its moves, bar Signal Beam for the former. It also provides Stealth Rock support and switches into Pursuit variants of Skuntank. Late-game cleaners such as Swellow, Vivillon, and Lilligant appreciate teams being heavily weakened by Mesprit's attacks. The former two in particular struggle to break Steelix with their STAB moves, which Mesprit heavily weakens, while the latter appreciates Magmortar being weakened, a common Pokemon that can put Lilligant's sweep to a halt.

Moves Rain Dance doubles the Speed of Swift Swim Pokemon and strengthens the power of Water-type attacks, while Sunny Day doubles the Speed of Chlorophyll users while boosting the power of Fire-type attacks. Stealth Rock is used to break Focus Sashes, which is extremely important on weather teams, as a Focus Sash Pokemon can cripple one of your sweepers before they can do much. Furthermore, Stealth Rock punishes opposing switches, which is especially helpful because loop switching is a common tactic used to burn weather turns while taking minimum damage. U-turn can be used as a momentum grabber, allowing weather sweepers, which tend to be frail, to come in for free on a slow pivot. Psychic provides Mesprit with a STAB attack so that it is not completely passive and can threaten Pokemon such as Garbodor. Psyshock is another option to better hit Hariyama, which weather teams tend to struggle with because of its high special bulk. Set Details 252 HP EVs with 240 Defense EVs and a Bold nature allow Mesprit to come in on many physical attackers in the tier such as Kangaskhan and Hitmonchan, which can pressure Omastar and Kabutops with strong priority. The 16 extra EVs go into Speed to allow Mesprit to outpace Adamant Aggron and Jolly Rhydon. Damp Rock and Heat Rock allow Mesprit to keep up rain and sun, respectively, longer. Usage Tips Mesprit makes for a phenomenal lead on weather teams due to the role compression it provides with both weather moves and Stealth Rock as well as its ability to take on common threats to weather teams such as Hitmonchan and Hariyama. Mesprit should usually set up Stealth Rock and then weather; however, should the situation arise where Mesprit can only use one, the first choice should almost always be weather, since this benefits the team more immediately and significantly. It is typically best to preserve Mesprit for later in the game so it can set up weather again and continue to check threatening attackers. Sometimes it is not worth setting up rain at the risk of it being outsped and Taunted or having its weather rock removed via Knock Off. After Mesprit has done its job, it should always immediately U-turn out, because without Thunder Wave or much offensive presence, Mesprit can be set up on by a good number of threats. Be wary of Dark-types, as they completely wall this set, and be particularly careful against Liepard, as not only can Mesprit not touch it outside of U-turn, but it can also come in when Mesprit sets up weather, threaten to cripple it with Encore, and then U-turn out as Mesprit hard switches, snatching momentum away, which can severely cripple weather teams. The wisest way to handle Dark-types is to predict their switch and U-turn as they come in, preventing them from trapping Mesprit and getting off a good amount of damage. Team Options Rain sweepers such as Ludicolo, Kabutops, and Omastar are best paired with Rain Dance Mesprit because they can take advantage of the rain with Swift Swim and boosted STAB moves. Sun sweepers such as Sawsbuck and Shiftry are good partners with Sunny Day Mesprit because they can use the sun to boost their Speed with Chlorophyll. Fire-types that can take advantage of the sun, such as Charizard and Pyroar, are good partners as well, as they can hit extremely hard with sun-boosted STAB moves. Fast weather setters like Liepard and Electrode are ideal because they can outspeed the whole metagame and virtually guarantee that weather is set up. Garbodor forms a useful anti-Fighting-type defensive core with Mesprit and provides additional hazards that support weather sweepers immensely.

Moves Stealth Rock supports Mesprit's teammates, and Mesprit makes for a decent user of the move due to its ability to set it up against Pokemon it walls. Psychic lets Mesprit deal consistent damage, nailing Fighting- and Poison-types such as Gurdurr and Garbodor in particular. U-turn lets Mesprit keep up offensive momentum, allowing it to bring in teammates safely. Thunder Wave lets Mesprit cripple fast offensive Pokemon, giving slower teammates the advantage. Healing Wish is an alternative that allows Mesprit to bring a sweeper back to full HP and rid it of status. Coverage moves such as Energy Ball and Signal Beam to hit Rhydon and Malamar, respectively, can be used if your team is weak to these specific setup Pokemon. Rain Dance or Sunny day is also an option on the last slot to allow Mesprit to act as dedicated weather starter. Set Details Maximum HP EVs in tandem with 240 Defense EVs and a Bold nature allow Mesprit to take on physical attackers with ease. The remaining EVs go into Speed to let Mesprit outspeed Adamant Mawile and below. Leftovers gives Mesprit passive recovery, allowing it to last a little longer. Colbur Berry is another option to let Mesprit more reliably check certain Fighting-types such as Hariyama and Gurdurr while also letting it avoid being Pursuit trapped one time. Leftovers is another option to give Mesprit passive recovery. Usage Tips Due to its heavy Defense investment, you can use Mesprit as a pivot into physical attackers. Try to set up Stealth Rock as soon as possible, and use it against a Pokemon that cannot do much in return. If Xatu is on the opposing team, anticipate its switch in by using U-turn to maintain offensive momentum and let a teammate take care of it. Thunder Wave is a good move to use against fast offensive Pokemon, aiding slower teammates to run through the opponent's team. Only attack with Psychic when Mesprit absolutely needs to get damage on Pokemon such as Hariyama and Garbodor. Healing Wish should generally be used when a vital teammate or setup sweeper has been significantly weakened. However, it shouldn't be used when there are Pokemon on the opposing team that Mesprit needs to check. If Mesprit is not holding a Colbur Berry, be wary of Pursuit trappers such as Skuntank and Liepard, and be more cautious when switching into Fighting-types, as Mesprit is vulnerable to Knock Off. Team Options Mesprit pairs incredibly well with setup sweepers such as Mawile, Klinklang, Samurott, and Shiftry due to its ability to bring them in safely with U-turn, give them a second shot at sweeping with Healing Wish, and provide them with Thunder Wave support. Mesprit also switches into Fighting-types such as Hariyama, which Klinklang and Shiftry greatly benefit from. Wallbreakers such as Samurott and Aurorus pair well with this set, as Mesprit can slow down faster Pokemon with Thunder Wave and bring both of them in safely with a slow U-turn. Other U-turn and Volt Switch users such as Scyther, Zebstrika, and Lanturn are good teammates for Mesprit, as together they maintain offensive momentum while the opposing team gets worn down by repeatedly switching into Stealth Rock. More defensive partners such as Mega Audino can keep Mesprit healthy with Wish while also curing any status ailment with Heal Bell, while Mesprit is able to take on problematic Pokemon such as Garbodor. Miltank is also a decent partner, as it appreciates Mesprit's ability to switch into Fighting-types.

Moves Psychic is Mesprit's most powerful and reliable STAB move, dealing high amounts of damage to Weezing and Garbodor. Psyshock is an alternative to hit Mega Audino, Assault Vest Hariyama, and Magmortar harder. Note that Psyshock should only be used alongside Calm Mind, as it gives Mesprit a slightly better matchup versus opposing Calm Mind users, most notably Mega Audino. Signal Beam has good coverage with Mesprit's Psychic STAB type, hitting targets such as Shiftry, Liepard, Malamar, Exeggutor, and Musharna. Ice Beam hits Xatu, Scyther, and Torterra, while still covering Shiftry and Exeggutor. Hidden Power Ground hits Skuntank, Steelix, Klinklang, and Mawile, which otherwise take Mesprit's attacks very well. Energy Ball is an alternative to nail Rhydon, Gastrodon, Samurott, Prinplup, and Lanturn. Healing Wish allows Mesprit to bring back a heavily damaged teammate. Calm Mind is an option over Healing Wish to make Mesprit hit very hard after a boost, allowing it to act as a bulky win condition. Thunderbolt hits Water-types neutral to Grass such as Mantine and Pelipper, as well as retaining coverage against Xatu and Scyther. Hidden Power Fire is also an option to mainly hit Ferroseed harder while retaining coverage against Klinklang and Mawile. Set Details Maximum Speed EVs allow Mesprit to outspeed as many Pokemon as possible, while maximum Special Attack EVs allow it to hit as hard as possible. A Modest nature is preferred as Mesprit appreciates the additional boost in power. However, a Timid nature is also an option, as it allows Mesprit to outspeed Modest maximum Speed Magmortar, as well as Speed tie with opposing positive-natured base 80 Speed Pokemon such as Shiftry and Kabutops. Life Orb is chosen for the good boost in damage output and allows Mesprit to switch between its moves, which lets it get the most mileage out of its great coverage. Colbur Berry in conjunction with Calm Mind ensures that Mesprit's sweep is not ended prematurely against a Dark-type. Another variant of this set involving four attacks is also an option if Healing Wish support is not desired, making Mesprit much harder for the opponent safely switch a Pokemon into. Usage Tips Use powerful Life Orb-boosted attacks early- and mid-game to break down the opponent's bulkier Pokemon. If the opponent has a Pursuit user, use the appropriate coverage move to catch them on the switch. Don't switch in Mesprit haphazardly; rather, bring it in with a slow U-turn or Volt Switch or after a Pokemon has fainted, as Mesprit already gets worn down by Life Orb recoil. Healing Wish should be used when it is absolutely crucial to keep a teammate healthy against a threatening Pokemon on the opposing side or when a sweeper has been significantly weakened. Calm Mind is generally best used against balanced teams where Mesprit needs a bit more power to break through bulkier Pokemon; against offense, it is far more beneficial to attack. Team Options Primeape and Hariyama are excellent partners for Mesprit, as both are able to check Dark-types very well, while Mesprit takes down Garbodor and Weezing. Combusken is also a decent partner due to its ability to check Dark-types such as Shiftry, Pawniard, and Liepard. Swords Dance Mawile is a great partner, as it switches into Scyther and uses it as setup bait, while Mesprit breaks down Garbodor and Weezing and can replenish Mawile's HP and rid it of any status ailments with Healing Wish. Other setup sweepers such as Shiftry, Samurott, Lilligant, and Klinklang also greatly benefit from Healing Wish, and all of them appreciate Mesprit's early- and mid-game wallbreaking capabilities, making it easier for them to clean late-game. Mesprit tends to have issues breaking through Mega Audino and Musharna, so Skuntank and Haunter are good partners for their ability to threaten both with their respective STAB moves and prevent them from setting up or healing with Taunt. Skuntank is also able to Pursuit trap other Psychic-types, as well as eliminate faster Ghost-types, including Haunter, Rotom, and Mismagius.

Moves Stealth Rock supports Mesprit's teammates, and it makes for a good user of the move due to Levitate giving it a good matchup against Rhydon. Psychic is a reliable STAB move that hits targets such as Weezing and Garbodor very hard. Hidden Power Ground is useful for hitting Skuntank and Steel-types, such as Steelix, Klinklang, Mawile, for super effective damage. Ice Beam most notably hits Xatu, which will attempt to bounce back Stealth Rock, as well as hitting Torterra, Shiftry, Scyther, and Rhydon. Healing Wish brings an ally back to full HP and cures any status ailments. Signal Beam primarily hits Malamar, as well as Musharna, Shiftry, and opposing Mesprit. U-turn is another option to keep up offensive momentum and potentially let a teammate safely switch in. Psyshock is an alternative to Psychic to hit Mega Audino, Assault Vest Hariyama, and Magmortar harder. Energy Ball scores the OHKO on Rhydon and Gastrodon and does good damage to both Lanturn and Prinplup. Thunderbolt is also an option for hitting bulky Water-types such as Prinplup, Pelipper, and Mantine, as well as retaining coverage on Xatu. Hidden Power Fire lets Mesprit mainly hit Ferroseed while also getting damage on other Steel-types. Set Details Maximum Special Attack EVs plus a Modest nature allow Mesprit to let it hit as hard as possible, while maximum Speed EVs let it Speed tie with other neutral base 80 Speed Pokemon. A Timid nature is also an option as it lets Mesprit outspeed Modest Magmortar as well as Speed tie with positive base 80 Speed Pokemon such as Shiftry and Kabutops. Life Orb increases Mesprit's damage output, most notably getting a guaranteed OHKO on Malamar with Signal Beam and 2HKOing Skuntank after Stealth Rock with Hidden Power Ground. Leftovers is an alternative for added longevity at the cost of drop in power. Colbur Berry is also an option that allows Mesprit to act as a more reliable check to certain Fighting-types such as Hariyama and Gurdurr as well as avoid being trapped by Pursuit one time. Levitate is Mesprit's only ability, but it is very useful for providing an immunity to Ground-type moves and all entry hazards bar Stealth Rock. Usage Tips This set generally makes for a good lead thanks to its favorable matchup against most Stealth Rock users. If Xatu is on the opposing team, avoid the use of Stealth Rock and instead use Ice Beam or, if not running the move, make a double switch to a Pokemon that threatens it, such as Skuntank or Liepard. If Mesprit is not running Colbur Berry, be cautious when switching into Hariyama, as both deal heavy damage with Knock Off. Try to play carefully with Mesprit when a Pursuit user is on the opposing side, as keeping Mesprit around may be crucial if it is the team's only way to check Fighting-types. Healing Wish should only be used in situations where a teammate needs to stay healthy in order to check a specific threat or if a sweeper has been heavily weakened or crippled by status. Team Options Setup sweepers such as Swords Dance Samurott, Swords Dance Shiftry, and Rock Polish Rhydon are excellent partners, as all three of them appreciate Stealth Rock support and can be played more recklessly thanks to Healing Wish support. Rhydon in particular pairs well with Mesprit, as it threatens Skuntank and uses it as setup bait, while Mesprit checks Fighting-types including Hariyama and Gurdurr, all of which can halt Rhydon's attempt to sweep. Dark-types such as Liepard and Skuntank are an issue for Mesprit, especially when it's not using a Colbur Berry, as both are able to Pursuit trap Mesprit; therefore, Hariyama and Primeape make for excellent partners, as they threaten both of them greatly, while Mesprit's Stealth Rock support discourages one of their best offensive checks in Scyther from switching in. Skuntank also works well for its ability to Pursuit trap Xatu as well as Ghost-types that threaten Mesprit, while in return, Mesprit covers Skuntank's lone weakness to Ground and is able to threaten Fighting-types that give Skuntank issues.

Moves Substitute gives Mesprit the ability to easily set up Calm Minds against defensive walls without worry of being worn down by status moves and weak attacks. With the given EV spread, it can easily set up Substitutes against defensive Pokemon such as Mega Audino, Lanturn's pivot set, and Xatu's pivot set. Calm Mind allows Mesprit to greatly boost its Special Attack and Special Defense, giving it the ability to break many defensive teams and to break through bulky Pokemon it otherwise cannot. Psyshock is a great STAB move for Mesprit, as it allows it to hit enemy Pokemon on their Defense stat rather than their Special Defense stat. This allows Mesprit to set up Calm Minds alongside, and win against, enemy Mega Audino, ignoring their Special Defense boosts, while also hitting Magmortar, Lanturn, and Hariyama much harder. Ice Beam provides excellent neutral coverage with Psyshock, hitting targets such as Steelix and Skuntank neutrally and getting a near-guaranteed OHKO against Shiftry after a boost. Ice Beam also gives Mesprit a much better matchup against physically bulky Pokemon such as Rhydon, Xatu, Torterra, and Gourgeist-XL. Alternatively, Signal Beam gives more reliability against enemy Psychic-type Calm Mind users, such as Mesprit and Musharna, and hits Shiftry and Malamar for very high damage, even when unboosted. However, running Signal Beam means that Mesprit cannot break through Steelix and has a significantly worse matchup against Pokemon such as Rhydon and Xatu. Set Details Maximizing Speed EVs with a Timid nature allows Mesprit to Speed tie with major threats such as Shiftry and Kabutops, as well as outspeed Jolly Hitmonchan and maximum Speed Modest Magmortar. Leftovers is used here in order to provide Mesprit with passive recovery and allow it to set up more Substitutes. 48 Special Attack EVs give Mesprit a near-guaranteed chance to OHKO Shiftry with Ice Beam after a single Calm Mind boost. If needed, Mesprit can run an alternate spread of 200 HP / 56 SpA / 252 Spe, which guarantees a KO on Shiftry after a single Calm Mind boost, although it loses some Leftovers recovery. The remaining EVs are then put into HP, as it makes Mesprit's Substitutes much bulkier and allows it to set up on a larger number of Pokemon in the tier while maximizing Leftovers recovery. Usage Tips Mesprit should be switched into many of the tier's defensive Pokemon, such as Mega Audino, Gastrodon, and Lanturn, and then set up a Substitute, as they often lack a way to break it. After it has a Substitute up, Mesprit can proceed to force out these Pokemon or easily set up Calm Minds on them. Mesprit is also able to force out a large number of the tier's Fighting- and Poison-types, such as Hariyama, Hitmonchan, and Weezing, as they do not appreciate taking a STAB Psyshock, and set up a Substitute or Calm Mind; however, it can often only switch in on a predicted double switch or Fighting-type attack, as it detests losing its Leftovers from a Knock Off, which Fighting-types often carry. Early- and mid-game, it is often better to attack your opponent's Pokemon, rather than trying to set up a Substitute, as it is not immediately apparent that the set used is a Calm Mind one, let alone with Substitute, so you may be able to capitalize on that later on in the game. Proper usage of Substitute allows Mesprit to potentially avoid taking damage from the Sucker Punches of Pokemon such as Skuntank and Shiftry, allowing it much more freedom to play around them. Additionally, it grants Mesprit a buffer to severely mitigate damage from opposing Pursuit users such as Skuntank. Team Options Mesprit is very vulnerable to Dark-type attackers, so it naturally pairs well with Fairy-types such as Mega Audino and Clefairy, as they often take very little damage from attacks such as Knock Off, appreciate Mesprit's ability to take on enemy Poison-types, and benefit from its ability to lure in Steelix and effectively damage it with Ice Beam. Thunder Wave support from Mega Audino, Clefairy, or Miltank helps this Mesprit set tremendously, as it allows it to outspeed a large number of threats such as Floatzel and Archeops and grants it more opportunities to set up Substitutes on many more Pokemon. Wish and Heal Bell support from Mega Audino can also assist this Mesprit set to play more aggressively in the mid-game, giving it more opportunities to switch into status while still being able to set up in the late-game. Fighting-type teammates such as Gurdurr, Hitmonchan, and Hariyama can come in on Dark-types, which threaten Mesprit, while Mesprit can easily come in on, threaten out, and set up a Substitute on the Poison-types that wall them. If Mesprit is running Signal Beam, it can even combat enemy Psychic-types, while Ice Beam variants also beat Xatu. As Ice Beam variants of this set struggle to effectively beat enemy Psychic-types, it can often be helpful to pair this Pokemon with Dark-types, which can threaten enemy Psychic- and Ghost-types, both of which can threaten Mesprit and prevent it from sweeping. In return, Mesprit can often set up on Pokemon such as Hariyama, Mega Audino, and Hitmonchan, all of which can often wall Dark-type attackers. Pokemon that lure in defensive Water- and Grass-types, such as Rotom, Samurott, or Barbaracle, are good partners for Mesprit, as it can easily come in on a predicted Grass- or Water-type switch in, and either set up, or fire off an attack for very low risk. Floatzel is especially notable for luring in these Pokemon and can revenge kill many Pokemon that normally outspeed Mesprit, such as Liepard, Tauros, and Archeops.

This set uses Mesprit's great coverage and solid base 105 Special Attack stat to become a solid setup sweeper. Calm Mind is Mesprit's only boosting move, and allows Mesprit to boost its Special Attack, while simultaneously boosting Special Defense to make it harder for opposing special attackers to revenge kill. Psyshock is the preferred STAB move in order to hit special walls such as Cryogonal and Clefable that would otherwise handle this set, but Psychic is a decent alternative in order to hit Rhydon and Tangrowth much harder. Thunderbolt is necessary to get past Slowking, a very common Pokemon that is able to stand up to most other special attacking Psychic-types. The last move lets Mesprit hit Grass-types such as Tangrowth for heavy damage regardless of which one you pick. Hidden Power Fire is preferred though so Mesprit can handle the likes of Ferroseed, Steelix, and Escavalier. Ice Beam is an alternative to hit Rhydon, Druddigon, and Golurk harder than any other move. The EV spread maximizes damage output while accounting for the imperfect Speed IV required by Hidden Power Fire by using enough Speed EVs to outpace positive base 75s such as Absol and Smeargle. 4 EVs are shifted from HP to Defense in order to hit a Life Orb number. If you opt for Ice Beam, place the HP and Defense EVs into Speed, while leaving 4 EVs in HP. In terms of ideal teammates, a check to Spiritomb is very important to have, as Spiritomb can take any move from this set and checkmate Mesprit between Sucker Punch and Pursuit. Aggron and Emboar can both handle Spiritomb's moves quite nicely and weaken it and other defensive cores to set the stage for Mesprit to sweep later. Drapion isn't as common as Spiritomb, but its typing and decent special bulk mean it can take a hit or two from Mesprit and retaliate with a STAB Crunch. More offensive variants of Drapion will outspeed Mesprit as well. Steel-types such as Steelix and Escavalier can generally handle Drapion without too many issues. Uxie has enough bulk to handle multiple hits from Mesprit and either cripple it with Thunder Wave or force it out with Yawn. Escavalier is a perfect answer to Uxie as it doesn't mind paralysis, can use Sleep Talk to deal with a possible Yawn, and has Pursuit to ensure Uxie can't escape without taking heavy damage. Entry hazard support is nice to have to ensure that Rhydon and bulky Gallade are OHKOed by +1 Ice Beam and Psyshock, respectively. Steelix and Rhydon can take on most of the physical attackers that usually come in to revenge kill Mesprit, and can also set up Stealth Rock. Qwilfish is able to check Durant, Escavalier, and Choice Scarf Emboar, while setting up Spikes against them. Smeargle, Omastar, Ferroseed, and Golurk can also support Mesprit in various ways while also supplying entry hazards.

This set gives up the ability to switch moves in exchange for an immediate power boost. Choice Specs Mesprit doesn't have the raw power of other Choice Specs users such as Moltres, Typhlosion, and Tangrowth, but it is a great offensive pivot with impressive coverage and sufficient power to be threatening. Psyshock is the chosen STAB move to get past the likes of Cryogonal, Clefable, and Gallade with much greater ease. Psychic can be used if your team has issues with Rhydon and Tangrowth, but the ability to break down special walls without the need of a physical move is something few other Choice Specs users have. Thunderbolt is necessary in order to deal serious damage to Slowking while OHKOing the likes of offensive Sigilyph, Kabutops, and Crawdaunt. Hidden Power Fire gets the nod in the next slot to handle Steel-types such as Steelix, Escavalier, and Ferroseed that can handle Mesprit's other moves. Ice Beam is a decent alternative to hit Rhydon, Golurk, and Druddigon super effectively. Both moves hit important Grass-types such as Tangrowth. U-turn rounds out the set by making Mesprit a great offensive pivot and scouting for its checks and counters. Ice Beam can be used here to maximize coverage if it isn't used over Hidden Power Fire already. Trick is also a decent option, although Mesprit will rarely want to lose its Choice Specs. The EV spread lets Mesprit outspeed positive base 75s such as Smeargle and Absol while accounting for the imperfect Speed IV required for Hidden Power Fire. You can maximize Speed if Hidden Power Fire isn't used, but the EV spread given already lets Mesprit outspeed what it needs to while serving as a solid offensive pivot. Timid is preferred so Mesprit can run the small amount of HP EVs needed to ensure Life Orb Gallade and Choice Scarf Medicham fail to 2HKO with Close Combat and Hi Jump Kick, respectively. Entry hazard support, and Spikes in particular, is very useful to ensure Rhydon and specially defensive Gallade are OHKOed by Ice Beam and Psyshock respectively after 3 layers of Spikes and Stealth Rock (assuming a Timid nature). Ferroseed and Qwilfish both share good defensive synergy with Mesprit and are able to set up Spikes. Scolipede is a more offensive Spikes user that can weaken opposing Psychic-types with its STAB Megahorn. Stealth Rock support ensures that Magmortar and Moltres are OHKOed by Psyshock, making Stealth Rock setters such as Rhydon and Golurk solid partners for this set. Escavalier can be taken care of by Hidden Power Fire, but it doesn't fear much of anything else on this set. For this reason, mixed variants of Druddigon and Absol can be used as partners to lure Escavalier in and KO it with their powerful Fire-type coverage moves. Emboar and Moltres can switch into Escavalier thanks to their 4x resistance to Bug and quickly force it out with the threat of a powerful Fire-type STAB move, making them great ways to deal with Escavalier as well. As Mesprit has good synergy with most physically based wallbreakers, said wallbreakers can form an excellent wallbreaking core. Mixed and Choice Band Emboar, Escavalier, and Aggron all provide solid defensive synergy with Mesprit while putting significant pressure on opposing teams. Mesprit's U-turn can also get them in on favorable match-ups to heighten their effectiveness. VoltTurn teams can also make good use of Choice Specs Mesprit thanks to its ability to pivot into and out of attacks. Magneton, Rotom-C, Primeape, and Braviary are all solid partners on such teams. Magneton deserves a special mention, as it can trap and remove Steel-types for Mesprit. Finally, fast special attackers, such as Sceptile and Accelgor, can be used to clean up late-game after Mesprit has broken down the opposing defensive core.

This set is very flexible in how it can be played, so it can be described as Mesprit's most balanced set. Stealth Rock is needed for any team and Mesprit can use its resistances to Psychic- and Fighting-type moves to easily come in and set up the entry hazard with few issues. Psychic provides Mesprit with a solid STAB option to take down the Fighting-types that it naturally checks. Thunderbolt is generally preferred for Mesprit's coverage move on this set as it allows Mesprit to hit Sigilyph and Slowking really hard. However, if these Psychic-types are not a problem for your team, Hidden Power Fire is a solid alternative as it hits Escavalier, Steelix, and Ferroseed much harder than Mesprit's other moves. The last slot allows Mesprit to provide extra team support. U-turn generally gets the nod to let Mesprit act as a better pivot throughout the match. If that doesn't appeal to the needs of your team that much, then Healing Wish is an option worth considering. Although Mesprit loses some mid-game utility, it can sacrifice itself to bring back a weakened teammate late-game to possibly win the match. The EV spread is simply meant to maximize Mesprit's offensive presence, but there are some other Speed benchmarks you can consider if you'd prefer to use some EVs for HP to bulk Mesprit up. 216 Speed EVs are required in order to outspeed positive base 75s such as Absol and Smeargle, while 164 Speed EVs will keep Mesprit a step ahead of neutral-natured base 80s such as Kabutops and Gallade. If you opt to use Hidden Power Fire, you will have to compensate with 4 additional EVs in Speed as the move requires an imperfect Speed IV. It is not recommended to drop Mesprit's Speed EVs below 164 as it would then be outclassed by its cousin, Uxie. Leftovers is Mesprit's only form of recovery, so it's the held item of choice on this set. Colbur Berry is a decent alternative to let Mesprit have a bit more safety in the presence of Pursuit users such as Spiritomb and Escavalier. Lum Berry is another option as it lets Mesprit effectively shut down opposing Smeargle leads by outspeeding it and shrugging off a Spore with the Lum Berry. Finally, a Life Orb can be used to increase damage output, but this significantly lowers Mesprit's staying power and will make U-turn more of a liability. Ice Beam is another option to consider to hit Rhydon and Golurk harder than any other move while it also gets a slightly harder hit on Grass-types than Hidden Power Fire would. Psyshock is an alternative STAB move that hits special walls harder and allows Mesprit to handle Gallade more easily. Fighting-types generally pair well with Mesprit, as they can take the Bug- and Dark-type moves aimed at Mesprit, while Mesprit can check most of the Psychic-types that threaten them. Emboar and Hitmonlee in particular both appreciate Mesprit being able to wear down the likes of Slowking and Sigilyph over the course of the match. Aggron is another useful offensive partner that has the added benefit of being able to handle the Ghost-type moves Mesprit dislikes, while Mesprit is able to handle both of Aggron's 4x weaknesses quite nicely. Spikes users can pair well with Mesprit, as the latter can utilize U-turn to get them in on favorable match-ups, making their job easier. Ferroseed and Qwilfish are sturdier Spikes users that provide solid defensive synergy with Mesprit, while Scolipede and Omastar are more offensive options. Thanks to Mesprit's rare combination of Stealth Rock and offensive presence, it can easily find a home on VoltTurn teams as a bulky pivot that provides said offensive presence and Stealth Rock support in one slot. Magneton, Braviary, Rotom-C, and Primeape are all solid options as partners on VoltTurn teams.

While Mesprit is commonly seen using Calm Mind in a more offensively inclined fashion, it is certainly capable of using its acceptable bulk and solid resistances to use Calm Mind in a more defensive approach. Mesprit's superior immediate power and access to Ice Beam is what sets this apart from Uxie. Substitute protects Mesprit against status moves and, more importantly, Sucker Punch from the likes of Absol and Spiritomb. Calm Mind allows Mesprit to boosts its Special Attack to threatening levels, while also making it harder for special attackers to break Mesprit's Substitutes thanks to the Special Defense boost. Psyshock provides Mesprit with a reliable STAB move and gives it a way to beat special walls and opposing Calm Mind users. Thunderbolt gives Mesprit solid two-move coverage between it and Psyshock by hitting the likes of Slowking and Sigilyph hard. Ice Beam is an alternative to hit Rhydon, Golurk, Steelix, and most Grass-types much harder. The EV spread allows Mesprit to outspeed positive base 75s, most notably Absol and Smeargle. Maximum investment in Special Attack is used to let Mesprit hit as hard as possible, with the remaining EVs going into HP to give Mesprit a little more bulk. You can opt to maximize Speed in order to tie with other positive base 80s, but the primary need for this Mesprit is to outspeed Absol and Smeargle so it can play around them with Substitute, so any further Speed EVs tend to be unnecessary. Psychic is an alternative STAB option that can hit Rhydon and Tangrowth hard without having to resort to Ice Beam. Mesprit won't have full coverage owing to the need to use Substitute, so teammates that can cover these holes are necessary. Samurott is a fantastic partner, as it can use a mixed set to break down most of Mesprit's defensive checks, such as Steelix and Regirock, while also being able to carry Ice Beam itself to handle Tangrowth, Druddigon, and others. Escavalier, Magneton, and Spiritomb can all handle this set well. To combat them, Emboar and Entei can be used, and have the added benefit of being able to threaten special walls in general. Regirock isn't a very common threat, but its solid mixed defenses let it hold up against Mesprit quite easily. Grass-types such as Rotom-C, Torterra, and Sceptile are able to deal with Regirock and can also deal with bulky Water-types such as Slowking if Mesprit forgoes Thunderbolt. This set lacks immediate power when compared to Mesprit's other offensive sets, so entry hazards are helpful to mitigate this issue. Rhydon and Steelix are able to handle the majority of physical attackers in the tier and set up Stealth Rock. Qwilfish is able to check Escavalier, Entei, and Durant fairly well, and can set up Spikes to limit their opportunities to switch in. Finally, Pursuit support is nice for Mesprit in order to remove bulky Psychic-types such as Uxie, Slowking, and opposing Mesprit. Escavalier fears very little from these Psychic-types and has the bulk to take any coverage move from them barring Fire-type moves. Absol might lack the bulk of Escavalier, but it has the added benefit of being able to run Fire Blast to catch Tangrowth, Escavalier, and Ferroseed on the switch for major damage.

Mesprit makes an excellent user of Trick Room in OU due to its below average Speed and brilliant defensive stats. This set retains the ability to remove Gyarados, Dragonite, and Infernape with little trouble, while also allowing Mesprit to set up Trick Room and support slower members of its team. Thunder Wave isn't an option on this set as it will make the opponent slower than you, allowing them to outspeed Mesprit in Trick Room conditions. Trick Room allows Mesprit to support slow teammates. Thunderbolt and Ice Beam create the BoltBeam combination, giving great type coverage and being resisted by only Magnezone in OU. If Infernape or Gengar cause problems to your team, Psychic is the better option. U-turn allows Mesprit to escape the battle and scout oncoming attacks, as well as potentially bringing in a sweeper unharmed. The EVs on this set are the same as the above as they allow Mesprit to survive powerful boosted hits while being able to set up Trick Room for teammates. If you decide to use U-turn over Psychic, an alternative spread is recommended. 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe with a Timid nature allows Mesprit to move after most opponents, allowing the switch-in to come in unharmed. Wish support is helpful here as it allows Mesprit to switch in and set up Trick Room multiple times. Vaporeon is a great teammate for this as it can switch in on Water-type moves with an immunity and support the team with Wish. Its low Speed is helpful too as it allows you to use Wish before taking a hit. As this set is designed for Trick Room, slow and powerful teammates are recommended. Metagross, Snorlax, and Magnezone make great choices as they all pose a significant threat in the OU tier. Metagross is able to rip holes in the opponent's team with its STAB-boosted Meteor Mash and powerful Explosion. Snorlax is a great tank for Trick Room teams as it can set up Curse and batter the opponent with boosted Body Slam and Crunch. Magnezone, on the other hand, attacks from the special side. If Blissey decides to come in and wall you, Magnezone is free to use Explosion in her face. Steel-types are good partners as they can switch in on Dark- and Bug-type moves aimed at Mesprit. Magnezone makes an excellent teammate with its typing and good defensive stats. A huge Special Attack stat will allow it to switch in on resisted moves and force its way through your opponent's team with STAB Thunderbolt. Magnezone also has the bonus of Magnet Pull, allowing it to trap Scizor and OHKO it with Hidden Power Fire.

A great special movepool and high Special Attack make Mesprit an excellent revenge killer. 184 Speed EVs and a Choice Scarf allow Mesprit to outrun common OU threats such as Gengar and Dragonite, while it is able to OHKO them with a super effective move. Psychic is used as a reliable STAB move that hits Gengar and Machamp super effectively. Ice Beam will OHKO Dragonite and Flygon, while dealing huge damage to Celebi and Ground-types. Thunderbolt OHKOes Gyarados, and it also provides excellent type coverage alongside Ice Beam. U-turn allows Mesprit to scout Pursuit users switching in and gain information about the opponent's team. Hidden Power Fire allows Mesprit to hit Scizor super effectively upon its switch-in. 184 Speed EVs give Mesprit 363 Speed, which allows it to outrun positive natured base 115 Pokemon. Max Special Attack is vital for Mesprit to deal as much damage as possible. The remaining EVs are placed into HP, giving Mesprit a little bulk. When using Hidden Power Fire, an extra 4 EVs should be placed into Speed to negate the lower Speed iv required. As this set removes common threats such as Dragonite, Gyarados, Gengar, and Infernape, setup sweepers have an easier time boosting their stats without the risk of being KOed. Dragon Dance Tyranitar is an option as Infernape and Dragonite are unable to hit it with Close Combat or Earthquake. A Babiri Berry is recommended however, due to the common usage of Scizor. Dragon Dance Kingdra is another option, as Mesprit is able to remove Dragonite from play. After a few boosts from Dragon Dance, Kingdra will be deadly with Outrage and Waterfall.

This set is designed to KO dangerous OU sweepers such as Gyarados, Dragonite, and Infernape. Even without Special Attack EVs Mesprit is able to OHKO all 4 HP / 0 SpD Gyarados with Thunderbolt after Stealth Rock damage, all offensive Dragonite and Flygon with Ice Beam, and all Naive Infernape with Psychic. The EVs ensure that you never get KOed by these threats in return. Thunder Wave is the best option in the final slot as it gives Mesprit the chance to cripple faster sweepers and KO them on the following turn. Stealth Rock is another useful option, as it allows Mesprit to score an OHKO on Gyarados when it decides to switch in, and it also renders any Focus Sashes useless. U-turn allows Mesprit to escape an oncoming Tyranitar or Scizor before they are able to severely damage it with Pursuit. The EVs on this set are specialized to take hits as well as possible. Max HP is vital as it allows Mesprit to survive even boosted assaults from the most powerful OU sweepers. 180 Defense EVs ensure that Mesprit survives a +2 offensive Gyarados's Waterfall 100% of the time, and it also allows Mesprit to survive a +1 Outrage from Dragon Dance Dragonite. 76 EVs in Special Defense allow Mesprit to survive a standard Life Orb Gengar's Shadow Ball most of the time. This is shown in the damage calculations below, along with more OU threats included. +2 252 Atk Adamant Gyarados + Life Orb Waterfall vs 252 HP / 180 Def = 73% - 87% 252 SpA Timid Gengar + Life Orb Shadow Ball vs 252 HP / 76 SpD = 84% - 99% 252 Atk Adamant Machamp + Leftovers Payback vs 252 HP / 180 Def = 49% - 58% 252 Atk Jolly Flygon + Choice Scarf Outrage vs 252 HP / 180 Def = 33% - 40% Stealth Rock support is helpful if Mesprit decides to not run it. Forretress makes a fine choice as it is able to switch in against Bug-, Ghost-, and Dark-type moves, while it is also able to remove entry hazards from Mesprit's side of the field. Stealth Rock is necessary to OHKO Gyarados after it switches in. Support from Wish is a massive help to Mesprit as it is unable to restore its health outside of Leftovers and Rest. Vaporeon is a great choice to do this as it has a huge HP stat and decent defenses. Blissey is another fine choice as she can switch in on Ghost-type moves with an immunity and threaten them with Thunder Wave. Mesprit and Blissey are a great defensive combination as they are able to switch in on each other's weaknesses. For example, Mesprit is able to switch in on Fighting-type moves that Blissey cannot handle. With the removal of Gyarados, Dragonite, and Gengar, Fighting-types such as Lucario and Infernape are able to set up without the fear of being KOed. After a boost from Swords Dance, Lucario will be almost unstoppable. Threats such as Tyranitar, Scizor, and Weavile will all be OHKOed by Close Combat and Crunch. Infernape is a great option as it can deal serious damage both physically and specially, allowing it to defeat Rotom-A with Fire Blast, Swampert with Grass Knot, and Blissey with Close Combat. Magnezone is another option as it can switch into Scizor's Bullet Punch and trap it with Magnet Pull. Magnezone can then take out Scizor with Hidden Power Fire or damage it with Thunderbolt.
