Analysis

Mega Rayquaza uses Substitute and Oblivion Wing to resist the vast majority of revenge killing attempts, including priority moves like Fake Out + Extreme Speed and Mega Gyarados's Sucker Punch. This allows it to sweep easily thanks to Mold Breaker, which allows it to hit opponents through Wonder Guard. Dark Void provides the free turns necessary to set up Substitute and Shell Smash; unlike Spore, it is not blocked by Safety Goggles. The recovery from Oblivion Wing not only offsets the initial Substitute damage, but also can offset damage from Curse and Will-O-Wisp. Sky Plate or Life Orb is crucial to break past specially defensive Blissey, and they help against Primal Kyogre. Sky Plate is typically the preferred option since it does not have the recoil of Life Orb, even though Life Orb sets break through Blissey more easily. If teammates can break through Blissey, Shed Shell can be run to escape various Shadow Tag users such as Regigigas, Mega Mewtwo Y, Mega Mewtwo X, and Primal Groudon. The EV spread allows it to outspeed Choice Scarf Mega Mewtwo Y after a Shell Smash boost while maximizing bulk. Oblivion Wing Mega Rayquaza fits on a plethora of teams, from hyper offense to bulky teams, thanks to its reliable sweeping and wallbreaking prowess. It is usually run with another wallbreaker, such as Mega Gyarados, Mold Breaker Primal Groudon, Mold Breaker Mega Gengar, or Mega Mewtwo X or Y, as these options threaten special walls like Wonder Guard Blissey and Primal Kyogre. Mold Breaker Primal Groudon with Shell Smash is especially notable, as it can set up and become notoriously difficult to revenge kill. Therefore, it and Substitute Mega Rayquaza make a fantastic dual Mold Breaker core. Mega Rayquaza also pairs well with users of Spikes and Stealth Rock, such as Shadow Tag Primal Groudon and Wonder Guard Xerneas, since they further restrict its already limited pool of switch-ins. Substitute + Baton Pass teammates, like the aforementioned Wonder Guard Xerneas, make sure it doesn't have to spend a turn setting up Substitute.

Analysis

Gale Wings Mega Rayquaza uses its phenomenal Special Attack and priority Flying-type STAB move to revenge kill most offensive threats. Chatter often OHKOes opposing Mega Rayquaza and Primal Groudon behind a Substitute after a Shell Smash defense drop and is mainly used for this ability. Additionally, the confusion inflicted by Chatter also bolsters the chances of KOing opposing Mega Rayquaza and Primal Groudon. Oblivion Wing and Aeroblast with Choice Specs are the primary moves to revenge kill opposing threats. Oblivion Wing has immense recovery and more PP at the cost of worse damage rolls on Mold Breaker Xerneas and unboosted threats like Primal Groudon. Aeroblast can be instead used for its increased power, but it comes at the cost of low PP, a chance to miss, and not providing any longevity. Trick is used to greatly hinder Gale Wings Mega Rayquaza's most common answers in Wonder Guard users. Taunt shuts down many Wonder Guard users that would usually be able to safely switch into Mega Rayquaza, like Mega Audino and Blissey. Stealth Rock and Spore capitalize on the switches it often forces, the former by setting up entry hazards for its teammates for free and the the latter by being an incredible tool for disruption and letting its teammates find free turns. Stealth Rock often pairs well with Trick, since support Wonder Guard users will always have to choose between pivoting and getting rid of hazards once they are given Choice Specs, losing their momentum if they choose the latter and keeping hazards up if they choose the former. Because of Gale Wings Mega Rayquaza's ability to consistently revenge kill Primal Groudon, opposing Mega Rayquaza, and Mega Gengar, it often finds itself on Mold Breaker-oriented offense teams with teammates that can take advantage of its revenge killing consistency. Mold Breaker sweepers like Primal Groudon, Mega Gengar, Mega Rayquaza, and Mega Latios appreciate it for this reason. Another Choice item + Trick user like Choice Scarf Mega Mewtwo Y can work wonders in dismantling the opponent's team by neutering two of its members for the rest of the match. Offensive Wonder Guard users like Xerneas and Gyarados can Imposter-proof Gale Wings Mega Rayquaza, as they don't have to worry about Taunt. Wonder Guard Gyarados holds its Mega Stone, making it immune to Trick and therefore a notably good partner. Huge Power Mega Gyarados further bolsters a team's revenge killing power when paired with Gale Wings Mega Rayquaza while providing strong offensive support, such as with Gastro Acid + Pursuit.

Analysis

Mega Rayquaza's amazing offensive stats, good Speed tier, and great STAB moves make it a powerful wallbreaker with Choice Specs. Draco Meteor is extremely powerful and heavily damages most potential switch-ins, like specially defensive Primal Kyogre and Ho-Oh. Notably, Draco Meteor also OHKOes Huge Power Mega Gyarados after Stealth Rock and Imposter Chansey lacking Eviolite. Special Rend is a weaker option that still reaches important benchmarks, like OHKOing Giratina and 2HKOing specially defensive Primal Kyogre after Stealth Rock, while not pressuring Mega Rayquaza to switch out. Aeroblast is a secondary STAB move that threatens Fairy-types like Xerneas and Mega Audino; Oblivion Wing is an alternative that greatly increases Mega Rayquaza's longevity. Additionally, Mega Rayquaza can also run Oblivion Wing in the third moveslot, which increases its longevity while giving it three powerful STAB moves, though it will fail to break through the occasional Registeel. Searing Shot targets Steel-types like Registeel and the rare specially defensive Mega Steelix; Secret Sword 2HKOes standard Registeel while also threatening Wonder Guard Blissey. Trick dismantles what defensive counterplay the opposing team has for Mega Rayquaza. Volt Switch allows Mega Rayquaza to retain momentum, taking advantage of its uncanny ability to force switches and force the most prominent Ground-type in Primal Groudon out. A Modest nature allows Mega Rayquaza to OHKO Primal Groudon forgoing bulk EVs, offensive Arceus, and Mold Breaker Mega Tyranitar from full health, as well as OHKOing bulky Primal Groudon variants after Stealth Rock. Choice Specs + Mold Breaker Mega Rayquaza works well on balance and bulky offense teams that can capitalize on its ability to force switches, as well as providing it support. In particular, it works well with the ubiquitous core of Mold Breaker + Shell Smash Primal Groudon, Prankster Giratina, Baton Pass + Wonder Guard Xerneas, and Huge Power Mega Gyarados. Primal Groudon appreciates Mega Rayquaza bringing in checks like specially defensive Primal Kyogre, Blissey, and the occasional Registeel and Ho-Oh; in return, Primal Groudon forces Giratina in. Prankster Giratina can deter most opposing setup attempts and use Will-O-Wisp or Glare to potentially dismantle Shadow Tag users, which often can revenge kill Mega Rayquaza. Wonder Guard Xerneas can pass Substitutes or Shell Smash boosts to Mega Rayquaza with Baton Pass, the latter potentially enabling a sweep; additionally, it can lure Primal Groudon in. Huge Power Mega Gyarados can heavily damage offensive Shadow Tag users like Mega Mewtwo X, Mega Mewtwo Y, and Choice Scarf Mega Rayquaza with Pursuit and Sucker Punch, as well as revenge killing Choice item Shadow Tag users that remove Mega Rayquaza—bar the occasional Play Rough Mega Mewtwo X. Specially defensive Pokemon, like Primal Kyogre, Blissey, Registeel, and Ho-Oh, are able to Imposter-proof Mega Rayquaza, though the latter two are difficult to fit. Offensive Wonder Guard users, like Mega Lucario, Xerneas, and Mega Gardevoir, are good to threaten Wonder Guard Xerneas while also luring Prankster Giratina in (if the latter two are not running Moonblast). Revenge killers, like Refrigerate Kyurem-B, Pixilate Mega Diancie, Imposter Chansey, and Shadow Tag Regigigas, threaten opposing sweepers that can otherwise wreak havoc if coming in after Mega Rayquaza KOes a foe. In particular, Refrigerate Kyurem-B and Imposter Chansey work well, as the former can OHKO both Choice Scarf and Eviolite Imposter Chansey with Icicle Plate-boosted Extreme Speed, and the latter also Imposter-proofs Mega Rayquaza. Defensive Wonder Guard users can provide Defog, cleric, and Wish support for Mega Rayquaza; many of them, in particular slow ones like Blissey, Mega Audino, and Escavalier, are also excellent at safely pivoting Mega Rayquaza in. Finally, Mega Rayquaza can be run with Choice Band + Mold Breaker Mega Rayquaza to keep the opponent guessing when one Mega Rayquaza is sent out, provided both Pokemon have the same HP percentage.
