Typhlosion Movesets & Competitive Sets

This set raises the power of Typhlosion's Eruption, making it difficult for any non-Fire-resistant Pokemon to switch into the move. Opting for Flash Fire for Typhlosion's ability provides it with more opportunities to switch in and can further boost Eruption's power, although Blaze is more consistent and prevents Typhlosion from being entirely inferior to its competition when it's low on health. However, Typhlosion typically struggles to reliably spam Eruption because of the prominence of Fire-resistant Pokemon such as Druddigon, Vaporeon, and Slowking. Magmortar and Delphox are more reliable as specially offensive Fire-types because of Magmortar's greater wallbreaking capabilities and Delphox's greater Speed and ability to boost its Special Attack.

Moves Eruption is an extremely powerful STAB move when Typhlosion is at full HP, reaching a base power of 150 and dealing huge damage to anything that doesn't resist it. Fire Blast is a more consistent STAB move that should be used once Typhlosion falls below 73% HP, as it will outdamage Eruption at that point. Hidden Power Grass hits Water- and Ground-types that will try to switch into Typhlosion's Eruption or Fire Blast. Focus Blast hits Rock-types such as Aggron and hits other Fire-types such as Houndoom and Mega Camerupt. Hidden Power Ice can be used over Hidden Power Grass, as it allows Typhlosion to catch defensive Flygon off guard. Set Details Choice Specs along with Typhlosion's solid Speed tier allows it to act as a wallbreaker. The EV spread is very basic, with maximum Speed investment as well as maximum Special Attack investment maximizing its Speed and power. Charcoal can be used, as it doesn't heavily rely on prediction like Choice Specs and allows Typhlosion to OHKO its usual switch-ins such as Houndoom after they switch into Eruption or Fire Blast. Usage Tips Even though Typhlosion normally shouldn't be considered over other Fire-types, mainly Delphox and Houndoom, Eruption gives it a tiny niche in RU, and for it to work, dedicated entry hazard removal is necessary. Typhlosion should try to switch in only when entry hazards have been removed. Slow U-turns and Volt Switches can get Typhlosion in safely against Pokemon such as Mega Glalie and Houndoom. Team Options Pokemon such as Flygon, Togetic, Pelipper, Shiftry, and Skuntank are good teammates for Typhlosion, as they provide Defog support, removing the entry hazards that give Typhlosion a hard time. Similarly, Pokemon such as Hitmontop and Hitmonlee can provide Rapid Spin support. Flygon resists Rock-type moves and is immune to Ground-type moves, while Typhlosion, in return, takes little damage from Ice- and Fairy-type moves. Togetic and Pelipper are both immune to Ground-type moves, but they stack a Rock-type weakness with Typhlosion. Grass-types such as Virizion, Rotom-C, and Shiftry can beat the bulky Water-types such as Jellicent and Alomomola that can beat Typhlosion. Pokemon that can set up Spikes, such as Qwilfish, Accelgor, and Omastar, can utilize Typhlosion's ability to force switches, though this is not recommended with a teammate that uses Defog.

While often seen utilizing a Choice item, by utilizing Sunny Day, Typhlosion can put holes in some of its more conventional checks and counters, while also supporting Sunny Day teams. Fire Blast offers Typhlosion a powerful STAB attack that gets further boosted by the presence of sun, even dealing respectable damage to Pokemon such as Druddigon. Common switch-ins to Typhlosion, such as Slowking and Lanturn, find the tables turned as their Water-type STAB moves are reduced in power, and Typhlosion can respond with a powerful Solar Beam. Hidden Power Rock ties everything together, allowing Typhlosion to hit opposing Fire-types hard, preventing Pokemon such as Moltres from burning turns of Sunny Day (pun intended). Flamethrower can be utilized in the place of Fire Blast for a STAB move, should accuracy be more important than extra power. Heat Rock is an option over Life Orb and allows Typhlosion to prolong the Sunny Day for an additional 3 turns, although the drop in power is very noticeable when met with Pokemon such as Slowking and Druddigon. Due to the nature of the set, Chlorophyll sweepers such as Victreebel and Sawsbuck are excellent partners for Typhlosion, taking advantage of the Sunny Day by setting up and wearing down each other's prospective checks and counters. Sunny Day supporters such as Uxie and Regirock both present solid support for Typhlosion, offering not only respectable checks to opposing Fire-types, but also Stealth Rock and Sunny Day, allowing Typhlosion to sweep more effectively. Rapid Spin support is obviously thoroughly appreciated for keeping Typhlosion alive and kicking, making Cryogonal an excellent partner, being immune to Ground-type attacks aimed at Typhlosion and capable of threatening Dragon-types with it's STAB Ice Beam, while providing the obvious Rapid Spin support.

Though inferior to the Choice Specs set, with access to a powerful STAB Eruption and strong offensive stats, Choice Scarf Typhlosion makes for a useful revenge killer and late-game sweeper. Eruption is naturally the crux of the set, allowing Typhlosion to hit everything that doesn't resist it for respectable damage. Of course, Fire Blast's consistent damage remains important to Typhlosion's success, allowing it to perform even at low HP. Focus Blast offers respectable neutral coverage alongside Typhlosion's STAB moves, punishing Rock-types such as Kabutops and Omastar should they try to switch in on a predicted Fire-type attack. Hidden Power Rock rounds off Typhlosion's coverage, allowing it to hit Fire-type Pokemon hard, as well as allowing Typhlosion to consistently knock out incoming Aerodactyl. It should be noted, though, that it doesn't hit nearly as hard as the Choice Specs set, and will thus get worn down much more easily by entry hazards due to the need to switch out more often. A Modest nature can be utilized to hit harder, although losing the ability to outpace Timid Lilligant after a Quiver Dance is pretty detrimental to Typhlosion's ability as a revenge killer. In terms of alternative moves, Flamethrower offers a more accurate option to Fire Blast, although without an item boosting its Special Attack, Typhlosion really appreciates the extra power. Hidden Power Grass can be utilized over Hidden Power Rock to hit bulky Water-types hard, but it should be noted that targets such as Slowking and Lanturn need to be worn down quite significantly before being threatened by this move. In order to retain Typhlosion's HP and Eruption's power, a Rapid Spin user is necessary to Typhlosion's success. Kabutops and Cryogonal are both apt partners for the task. Because it lacks the immediate power to break through bulky resistances, Typhlosion thoroughly appreciates dedicated hazard support to wear down bulky Water- and Dragon-types that switch into it. Ferroseed, Druddigon, and Qwilfish all make solid examples of such partners, setting up Stealth Rock or Spikes on common Typhlosion checks. However, certain dedicated special walls such as Slowking are capable of walling Typhlosion even with hazard support, making powerful Pursuit users such as Escavalier and Spiritomb good partners for trapping such threats.

Whilst wielding Choice Specs, Typhlosion becomes one of the most dangerous immediate special attackers in the tier. A maximum power Eruption being fired off 475 Special Attack is nothing to scoff at; it's even capable of beating bulky Pokemon such as Druddigon and Poliwrath with Stealth Rock in play. Of course, while ideal, Typhlosion can't always remain at full HP, so Fire Blast ensures that it retains a usable STAB move outside of such a scenario. Additionally, when Typhlosion is worn down enough, Blaze can supplement Fire Blast's power to the point where the drop in Base Power is almost unnoticeable. Focus Blast offers respectable neutral coverage alongside Typhlosion's Fire-type attacks, hitting Rock-types and dedicated special walls such as Clefable and Regirock for super effective damage. Lastly, Hidden Power allows Typhlosion to round off its coverage or even reinforce it. Hidden Power Grass hits bulky Water-types such as Slowking and Lanturn hard while offering a more accurate method to hit Rock-types. Hidden Power Rock hits Fire-types for super effective damage, allowing it to hit Pokemon such as Entei hard as it tries to switch in. Considering the fact that Choice Specs Typhlosion excels against slower, bulkier teams, a Modest nature is not out of the question, allowing it to push through defensive Pokemon more efficiently. However, when doing so, Typhlosion is outsped by Pokemon such as Moltres, Rotom, and Lilligant, and risks a Speed tie with Adamant Entei, and this should be taken into account when doing so. Even so, a Timid nature is usually more than enough, as can be observed in its damage: Eruption vs. 4/0 Kabutops 41.6 - 48.85% Eruption vs. 4/0 Entei 55.25 - 65.22% Eruption vs. 4/0 Moltres 57.94 - 68.22% Eruption vs. 252/4 Poliwrath 45.83 - 53.9% Eruption vs. 252/0 Druddigon 49.44 - 58.37% Flamethrower is an available option over Fire Blast, the choice boiling down to the long-standing power versus accuracy debate. More so than most of its Fire-type brethren, Typhlosion needs Rapid Spin support to function, ensuring the most powerful Eruption possible. Kabutops stands out as a natural partner, maintaining a solid offensive presence while reliably spinning, with each appreciating the other's ability to lure in bulky-Water-types and wear them down. Moreover, Kabutops lures in bulky Grass-types such as Tangrowth, which Typhlosion can in turn threaten with its STAB attacks. As Typhlosion is hard-pressed to outpace faster teams, paralysis support can help Typhlosion burn through teams. Rotom-C and Ferroseed both make solid partners in this right, covering up Typhlosion's weaknesses well, with the former being able to maintain offensive momentum with Volt Switch and the latter being able to set up hazards on an assortment of Pokemon Typhlosion lures in.

Typhlosion is a great late-game cleaner due to its high Speed and an excellent, accurate STAB move in Eruption. It should ideally be spamming Eruption, its main STAB move. When Typhlosion's health is lower, use Flamethrower or Fire Blast instead to benefit from Blaze as much as possible. Focus Blast is there mainly to damage Regirock. In the last slot, Hidden Power Grass is for foes like Whiscash, Quagsire, and Gastrodon. Hidden Power Rock can be used to OHKO Charizard and gives Typhlosion a better shot at dealing with Fire-types at the price of its perfect Speed IV. Hidden Power Electric hits Charizard and Mantine while retaining a super effective hit on the non-Ground / Water types. A Timid nature is recommended to outspeed and OHKO Choice Scarf Haunter and Choice Scarf Jynx and makes the most of Typhlosion's good Speed tier. Regirock and bulky Psychic-types have no issues in handling Typhlosion, so you'll want them taken out. Another Fire-type on your team can lure out Regirock and damage it, while Skuntank can come in and Pursuit trap Psychic-types. Tauros is another good candidate for weakening Regirock. A spinner is recommended to keep Eruption at maximum power. Hitmonchan and Sandslash are the best entry hazard removers in the tier.

Choice Specs is for wallbreaking. Spam Eruption at high health. Spam Fire Blast at low health; a Choice Specs Fire Blast enhanced further by Blaze is absurdly powerful. Focus Blast is there to invalidate Regirock. In the last slot, various Hidden Powers do various things; Hidden Power Grass KOes Pokemon like Whiscash, Quagsire, and Gastrodon, while Hidden Power Electric damages Charizard and Mantine. A Timid nature lets you turn non-Choice Scarf Jynx and non-Choice Scarf Haunter into roadkill. Maximum Speed is recommended to tie with other base 100s (Charizard in particular) and outspeed base 95s like Haunter and Jynx. The added power from Choice Specs makes Typhlosion better at damaging Regirock and Hypno. More support in eliminating Regirock and bulky Psychic-types still helps; Skuntank can eliminate the latter, while Tauros or another Fire-type can pressure Regirock or take advantage of a Regirock hit by Focus Blast to wreak havoc. A spinner is helpful in keeping Typhlosion's HP high. Hitmonchan and Sandslash are the best spinners in DPP NU and are decent at handling Rock-type attacks.

While not as scary as the previous set, this mixed attacking set can tear holes in offensive teams with some prediction. It is admittedly somewhat difficult to use properly, but a good player can reap rich rewards. Gyarados needs to be somewhat weakened for Typhlosion to finish it off with Thunder Punch. The same goes for Swampert with Hidden Power Grass or Salamence with Hidden Power Ice. If you predict a switch to Regice, Blissey, or Snorlax, use Focus Punch. Substitute is usable over Thunder Punch to ease up prediction and block status. Rash and Mild are the preferred natures, as this is a mixed set. The EV spread is relatively simple; Special Attack is maximized, 16 Attack EVs enable Typhlosion to lay the smack down on special walls with Focus Punch, 208 EVs are invested in Speed--if using Hidden Power Ice, use 4 extra Speed EVs--and the rest is put in HP.

Typhlosion hits quite hard off the bat, but once it Substitutes down to 25% HP or lower, both Blaze and Petaya Berry will activate, and together with STAB and Sunny Day, Flamethrower will rip through anything. Fire Blast is an inferior option in this case, because nothing is worse than missing when Typhlosion is about to sweep. This set works best as a late-game sweeper when counters to Typhlosion have been weakened enough for it to finish them off with Flamethrower. Hidden Power Grass deals with Swampert and the rare Quagsire, but Thunder Punch will OHKO Gyarados while getting a slightly harder hit on other Water-types. After boosts from Sunny Day and Blaze, however, Typhlosion's secondary move has to be 4x effective and the foe will have to resist Flamethrower for it to be weaker than Thunder Punch or Hidden Power Grass. Thunder Punch is also Typhlosion's only option against Flash Fire Pokemon such as Ninetales, Arcanine, and Houndoom. 60 HP EVs give Typhlosion a HP stat of 312, which is exactly divisible by four; this ensures that the Petaya Berry activates at exactly 25%, or after three Substitutes. The Speed EVs let Typhlosion hit 310 Speed, which beats out neutral-natured Salamence and Zapdos. Maximize Special Attack, and dump the rest in Special Defense.

Set Description Fire Blast is Typhlosion's STAB move that super effectively hits common Pokemon such as Exeggutor, Steelix, and Skarmory as well as doing decent neutral damage to Pokemon like Zapdos and Machamp. Dynamic Punch does the most amount of damage to Tyranitar and has the added bonus of confusing the target if it hits. Hidden Power Grass hits Pokemon such as Rhydon, Golem, and Quagsire that would otherwise wall Typhlosion. Thunder Punch is an alternative that hits Flying-types, such as Charizard and Moltres, as well as hitting Water-types, such as Starmie and Suicune. Earthquake reliably 3HKOes Raikou and 2HKOes Gengar without having to rely on Fire Blast's 85% accuracy, and it is also the best move to use against Tentacruel, Jolteon, and Houndoom. Sunny Day is an alternative that boosts Typhlosion's wallbreaking potential with Fire Blast and reduces the accuracy of Thunder, giving it the advantage against Zapdos and Raikou. Team Options Typhlosion is helpless against teams with Water-types barring Cloyster, so Pokemon that can weaken or take them out for Typhlosion make useful teammates. Starmie and Suicune are especially problematic for Typhlosion, and one of the best partners that can deal with Starmie is Cloyster due to its resistance to Water and access to Explosion. Cloyster also has Spikes to assist it and its teammates in sweeping or cleaning teams. Pokemon that can take advantage of Suicune's passivity such as Tentacruel and RestTalk Vaporeon are also valuable teammates, as they can wall Suicune and use it as setup fodder if it is not running Roar. Zapdos and Snorlax can absorb sleep for Typhlosion and can pressure Water-types. Lures for Water-types are also very helpful too, and Thunder or Thunderbolt Nidoking and Explosion Steelix are examples of such Pokemon. Nidoking is also a decent check to Tyranitar and can potentially weaken Pokemon Typhlosion dislikes such as Zapdos and Snorlax.
