Set Details Foul Play hits Jirachi and Dragon Dance Necrozma for large chunks of damage. Toxic helps Umbreon be less passive, threatening to secure a big poison on difficult-to-take-down Pokemon such as Slowbro and Wo-Chien. Protect is a valuable move on Umbreon to scout for Choice-locked attacks from wallbreakers like Gardevoir and Flamigo while also allowing for a Wish to land safely and gaining a turn of Leftovers recovery; alternatively, Moonlight can provide more immediate healing in a similar vein. Inner Focus prevents Umbreon from getting flinched down by faster Pokemon like Bisharp and Jirachi, while Synchronize can allow Umbreon to act as a status absorber while returning the favor to Pokemon like Body Slam Jirachi and Thunder Wave Reuniclus. Leftovers is the preferred item for Umbreon to maximize its longevity, though Heavy-Duty Boots can be used to prevent entry hazard chip from accruing too quickly as well. Tera Poison flips weaknesses to Bug, Fairy, and Fighting, which is important to survive the onslaught of attacks from wallbreakers like Terrakion, Gardevoir, and Yanmega, while also providing a key immunity to poison. Similarly, Tera Ghost can provide an immunity to Fighting and Normal, notably letting Umbreon punish Maushold with Foul Play; it can also help Umbreon function as a spinblocker against Cyclizar. Umbreon is an excellent fit on balance and bulky offense structures, fulfilling many key roles such as Wish passing and status spreading. Using its defensive prowess to provide reliable recovery to Choice item wallbreakers like Basculegion-F, Hisuian Goodra, and Galarian Zapdos is a defining trait of Umbreon's, as it can be difficult for teams to survive the onslaught of strong attacks while also trying to break through Umbreon. Slowbro pairs well with Umbreon defensively, as they can be quite difficult to break through using their immense bulk and type combination of Dark and Psychic. Given that Toxic is Umbreon's most notable way of dealing out damage, poison absorbers like Gligar and Registeel can reliably switch into Umbreon, so teammates like Barraskewda and Basculegion-F are important to threaten these checks. Entry hazard removal is important for Umbreon, as it often opts for Leftovers over Heavy-Duty Boots, making Noivern and Cyclizar two great partners that can provide hazard removal. The former also resists Bug and Fighting, which helps to form dynamic defensive cores that can use Umbreon's access to Toxic to wear down the opposition. Other defensive partners like Gligar and Hisuian Goodra, which lack reliable recovery of their own, can use Wish pass support from Umbreon to improve their longevity.

Boasting excellent defenses and a plethora of utility moves, Umbreon finds itself a niche in providing bulky support along with Inner Focus ignoring the ever so common Fake Out from the likes of Incineroar and Rillaboom. Access to Foul Play allows Umbreon to tackle physical threats such as Calyrex-I as well as threatening Calyrex-S with a huge amount of damage. Snarl helps tremendously against special attackers like Terapagos, Calyrex-S, and Lunala, dealing a decent chunk of damage to the latter two. Helping Hand can also be used in this slot to further boost the team's offensive pressure to help secure KOs, such as Helping Hand-boosted Tera Fairy Zacian-C OHKOing Incineroar with Play Rough. Yawn is Umbreon's primary means of disruption, forcing the opponent to keep switching their Pokemon to prevent them from being put to sleep, while Taunt helps shut down opposing support Pokemon like Amoonguss or any Trick Room setters such as Farigiraf and Calyrex-I. Moonlight, on the other hand, increases Umbreon's longevity on the field and is especially useful in sun teams. Safety Goggles gives it a much needed immunity to Amoonguss, which can otherwise completely shut down Umbreon with Spore and Rage Powder. The EV spread allows Umbreon to survive a Collision Course from Koraidon outside weather, a Tera Fairy Moonblast from Flutter Mane, and prevents the 2HKO from a rain-boosted Weather Ball and Thunderbolt from Pelipper and a Special Attack Booster Energy Raging Bolt, respectively. Tera Water is an excellent defensive Tera type, further bolstering Umbreon against Calyrex-I, Kyogre, and Urshifu-R. On the other hand, Tera Poison provides a resistance to Fairy and Fighting-type moves such as Flutter Mane's Moonblast, Koraidon's Collision Course, and Urshifu's Close Combat. Despite its longevity and disruptive options, Umbreon provides little to no offensive pressure most of the time. Pokemon like Zacian-C, Zamazenta-C, Koraidon, and the Urshifu formes instantly threaten Umbreon with their STAB moves, while faster Taunt users such as Incineroar and Flutter Mane shut down its support options. Umbreon pairs well with offensive Pokemon such as Zacian-C and Koraidon that can handle the aforementioned threats and take advantage of its Yawn pressure, with the latter setting up sun to maximize the healing provided by Moonlight. Rillaboom partners well with Umbreon because it functions as a Kyogre and Urshifu-R check while providing Grassy Terrain recovery and positioning through its U-turn. Meanwhile, Urshifu-R compliments Umbreon's support role by providing solid offensive pressure by pinning opponents with Surging Strikes, OHKOing Incineroar and Flutter Mane with the move.

Umbreon's high bulk allows it tank a slew of offensive Pokemon. Alongside excellent utility moves, Umbreon can generate tempo while surviving even surprise Tera-boosted attacks. Foul Play: In such a physically leaning format, Foul Play is a strong reliable move to chip the opponent's Pokemon. In particular, it punishes Dragon Dance from Lum Berry Dragonite. Wish and Protect: Wish + Protect provides excellent recovery opportunies for both Umbreon and its teammates. With Leftovers's animation as well, its great at stalling out the timer. Protect also scouts for U-turn and Tera. Yawn: Yawn's ability to force switches generates extra Leftovers recovery and generates momentum for its teammates. Thunder Wave: Thunder Wave has excellent synergy with Wish. If the opponent's Pokemon is unable to attack on the turn Umbreon uses Wish, Umbreon can easily pass the Wish to a teammate. Taunt: Umbreon can Taunt opposing walls and deny their recovery, with foes such as Hippowdon and Corviknight being especially vulnerable. Tera Types Tera Dependency - Medium: Despite its incredible bulk, Umbreon's Fighting- and Fairy-type weaknesses are exploitable by several top threats and often needs to be removed. Fairy: In a heavily Dragon-centric metagame, Tera Fairy on defensive Pokemon is highly valuable. Removing Umbreon's Fighting- and Fairy-type weakness also helps deal with Sacred Sword Chien-Pao and Mimikyu. Poison: Tera Poison resists Fighting, Bug, and Fairy and provides an immunity to Toxic, but makes it more vulnerable to Earthquake from the likes of Dragonite and Baxcalibur. Items Leftovers: Combined with Protect, Leftovers keeps Umbreon healthy and a little less reliant on Wish. Rocky Helmet: Rocky Helmet's chip damage is serviceable, but many top physical threats have suitable non-contact moves they can use on Umbreon, especially after Umbreon Terastallizes. Abilities Inner Focus: Inner Focus avoids flinches from Chien-Pao and Kingambit, making Umbreon a more reliable check. Synchronize: Synchronize punishes attempts to burn Umbreon. EV Spreads 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD with Bold: With Terastallization, this spread allows Umbreon to tank a majority of the physical metagame. 172 HP / 252 Def / 60 SpD / 20 Spe with Bold: If running Taunt, 20 Speed EVs outpace Skeledirge and Corviknight while retaining all-around bulk.

Foul Play hits many physical attackers that try to take advantage of Umbreon such as Metagross, Golurk, and Flygon. Protect enables Umbreon to heal from Wish safely and scout Choice-locked Pokemon such as Gardevoir, Chandelure, and Heracross. If the team already has a cleric, Toxic is a good option over Heal Bell to punish common counters such as Togekiss, Incineroar, and Suicune. Since Umbreon is affected by every entry hazard, Heavy-Duty Boots gives it more switch-in opportunities and makes it less dependent on entry hazard control. Alternatively, Leftovers is a good choice for some passive recovery if the team has reliable entry hazard control. Balance, semi-stall, and stall teams appreciate Umbreon's defensive qualities to check threatening Pokemon such as Polteageist, Chandelure, and Nidoqueen. Defensive Pokemon without reliable recovery such as Registeel, Stakataka, Bronzong, and Diancie appreciate Umbreon's Wish support. In return, they check Togekiss and either check troublesome Fairy-types or take the role of cleric to relieve Umbreon. Since Fighting-types such as Heracross, Bewear, and Pangoro heavily pressure Umbreon, checks to them such as Crobat, Dhelmise, and Galarian Weezing are very important. These Pokemon also give reliable entry hazard control if Umbreon runs Leftovers. On more defensive teams, Quagsire is a good choice to keep setup sweepers such as Reuniclus, Lucario, and Suicune in check, while Choice Scarf Ditto is a reliable offensive check to them. Reuniclus and Suicune are great setup sweepers on more semi-stalling teams and appreciate Umbreon's ability to check Ghost-types and keep them healthy with Heal Bell and Wish. Physical walls such as Gastrodon, Vileplume, and Galarian Weezing check troublesome physical threats such as Pangoro, Stakataka, and Sharpedo, which can overwhelm Umbreon.

Foul Play lets Umbreon do considerable damage to physical attackers, being particularly key to checking Dragon Dance users like Gyarados and Salamence. Toxic lets Umbreon punish special attackers like Salamence and Moltres for using Roost against it and most of the broader metagame effectively. Wish alongside Protect keeps Umbreon and its teammates healthy. Protect is also useful to scout Choice-locked Pokemon, like Primarina and Keldeo, and absorb attacks from Pokemon like Cobalion and Conkeldurr paired with Future Sight from Slowking. Inner Focus lets Umbreon avoid flinches from Pokemon it checks, like Mamoswine, Gyarados, and Jirachi, and check non-Heal Bell variants of Togekiss. Maximum Defense investment with a Bold nature lets Umbreon avoid the 2HKO from Mamoswine's Earthquake after Stealth Rock while improving its matchup versus Pokemon like Excadrill. Umbreon predominantly fits on balance, semi-stall, and stall teams as a fantastic check to threatening Pokemon like Azelf and Gyarados, as well as key team support through Wish. Hippowdon and Skarmory can check threats like Conkeldurr and Tapu Bulu for Umbreon. Skarmory can also provide an additional Excadrill check, Spikes support, and an Azumarill check. Slowking can check Keldeo and Primarina for Umbreon, while Umbreon checks Zarude and Hydreigon for it. Cleric support is vital, as Umbreon gets easily statused by Pokemon it checks like Hippowdon. Togekiss is a great option that can help check Hydreigon and provide an extra wincon with Nasty Plot versus the bulkier teams Umbreon struggles to make progress against, as well as checking Conkeldurr. Chansey is another fantastic option that can counter Primarina, Hydreigon, and Nidoking, while Articuno can also provide simultaneous Heal Bell and Defog support alongside Pressure, beating and PP stalling entry hazard setters like Hippowdon and Skarmory. Quagsire is a superb teammate on stall teams, dealing with Calm Mind Galarian Slowbro, Belly Drum Azumarill, and Nasty Plot Thundurus-T. Nihilego can check Hydreigon and Thundurus-T for Umbreon while providing Stealth Rock and Knock Off support against Pokemon like Excadrill and Scizor.

Umbreon is a sturdy wall in the metagame thanks to its great defenses and good typing, allowing it to easily withstand attacks from common Pokemon such as Groudon, Venusaur, and Dragapult. Foul Play takes advantage of the high Attack stats of Restricted Pokemon and deals very acceptable damage to them, such as on Groudon and Calyrex-I. Snarl allows Umbreon to slow down strong specially attacking threats such as Calyrex-S and Kyogre. Yawn makes Umbreon demand respect unlike most other defensive Pokemon, as sleep is generally an oppressive mechanic and can also completely shut down Dynamax for at least a turn, forcing the Pokemon to switch out in order to prevent it and wasting their Dynamax. Moonlight semi-reliably heals 2/3 of Umbreon's HP under sun, which is fantastic for a defensive Pokemon that is usually paired with Groudon. Moonlight can prove to help Umbreon win against Pokemon such as Calyrex-S and Kyogre under sun due to being able to play a very long game with them, 2HKOing the former and slowly chipping the latter down. Helping Hand allows Umbreon to bypass its lack of offensive presence by powering up an ally such as Groudon. Protect helps Umbreon stall opposing Dynamax turns more effectively. Sitrus Berry allows Umbreon to heal off a good amount of damage immediately, while Leftovers allows it to play the slow game when healing alongside Protect or Moonlight. The EV spread allows Umbreon to always survive Modest Kyogre's Water Spout under rain and Brave Calyrex-I's Max Hailstorm. Umbreon appreciates partners such as Groudon that can set sun, helping Umbreon heal a substantial amount with Moonlight, and Umbreon in turn gives Groudon room to set up with Swords Dance via Yawn and can shoot its damage up even higher with Helping Hand. Charizard is another good Umbreon partner that also loves being in the sun. It offsets Umbreon's weakness to Zacian-C and both Urshifu formes with its G-Max Wildfire and Max Airstream, respectively. Grimmsnarl makes Umbreon even more problematic by bolstering its bulk via dual screens support and serves as a secondary check to both Urshifu formes.

Umbreon is a decent Wish passer and cleric that checks various setup sweepers like Cosmic Power Mew and Tapu Bulu for its teammates. Unaware + Foul Play gives Umbreon a way to reliably win the one-on-one against common Swords Dance users like Dhelmise, Garchomp, and Talonflame; most notably, it can even beat Belly Drum Kommo-o. Wish + Protect is Umbreon's main form of recovery and makes it able to scout Choice-locked foes like Azelf, Terrakion, and Barraskewda before switching to a check. While most teams prefer Heal Bell support, especially since there are few viable clerics, Toxic is good at weakening defensive foes like Regenerator Swampert and Tapu Fini. Leftovers gives passive recovery and has good synergy with Protect. Maximum Defense investment is recommended to more easily tank physical attacks like Drain Punch, Close Combat, and Earthquake from Kommo-o, Tapu Bulu, and Garchomp, respectively. Umbreon's lack of pivoting move and defensive utility past its niche land it exclusively on semi-stall and stall teams. Pokemon without reliable recovery options like Sheer Force Tapu Lele, Galarian Zapdos, and Swords Dance users like Garchomp and Dhelmise are wallbreakers who greatly benefit from Umbreon's Wish passing and status relief. Regenerator Kommo-o sets Stealth Rock, switches into U-turn, and tanks powerful attacks from Pokemon like Barraskewda and Terrakion, while Umbreon covers for its weakness to Psychic-type attacks from users like Psychic Surge Azelf and Alakazam. Other common defensive Pokemon like Corviknight, Chansey, and Ferrothorn give Defog support, check special attackers, and set entry hazards, respectively, while Umbreon ensures that they don't become setup fodder. Since Umbreon matches up poorly into the most common specially attacking threats like Tapu Lele and Primal Weather users, Jirachi and Chansey are coveted teammates. Nidoqueen pairs exceptionally well with Umbreon by covering for its weakness to Pokemon like Terrakion and Tapu Koko; it also pressures foes with Toxic Spikes. Because Umbreon is prone to being PP stalled out of Wish, it also relies on the aforementioned defensive Pokemon to help it wall and chip foes. Regenerator Doublade and Runerigus are niche but synergistic partners that check particularly strong Fighting-types like Tough Claws Galarian Zapdos and Adaptability Terrakion to relieve pressure on Umbreon.

With its good bulk, Yawn, and STAB Foul Play, Umbreon has a small niche as an answer to both Calyrex-S and Calyrex-I. Foul Play provides consistent damage, puts heavy pressure on Calyrex-S thanks to its quadruple weakness, and can do decent damage to Zacian-C trying to come in. Snarl is less useful against Calyrex-I, but it can completely shut down Calyrex-S, as well as annoying most special threats thanks to the Special Attack drop. Moonlight can be used in place of Wish for instant, though inconsistent, recovery. Though Umbreon should only Dynamax in the most dire of situations, a Careful nature will make Max Darkness slightly stronger. Items Leftovers is the most sensible item, granting Umbreon consistent passive recovery, lessening the need to use Wish and Protect. Sitrus Berry is an alternative to Leftovers, providing Umbreon with a quick burst of health after taking some damage. Utility Umbrella can allow Umbreon to better stand up to Kyogre, and it also enables more consistent recovery if using Moonlight. However, even with Utility Umbrella, Umbreon should not be relied on as a Kyogre answer. EV Spreads 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD with Calm - This spread maximizes Umbreon’s special bulk, allowing it to consistently check Calyrex-S. 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD with Bold - This spread allows Umbreon to better take physical attacks but severely hinders its consistency against Calyrex-S and other special threats.

Moves Wish is the biggest reason to use Umbreon, as it lets it heal itself and teammates that need it, along with Protect, which guarantees that Umbreon gets recovery from Wish alongside passive recovery from Leftovers, gives the enemy an extra round of Toxic damage if they're poisoned, and scouts for moves and Choice-locked Pokemon. Heal Bell is a good option to get rid of harmful status for Umbreon and its team, but Toxic can be used over Heal Bell if it's not needed, as it can allow Umbreon to cripple bulky Pokemon such as Slowbro and Milotic, which it otherwise wouldn't be able to. Foul Play is the only way that Umbreon can do any meaningful damage, so it's chosen as the fourth move. Set Details Maximum HP and Special Defense investment is used to maximize Umbreon's special bulk and let it check threats such as Nidoqueen and Swellow. However, a physically defensive spread is a viable option to let Umbreon act as a better check to the likes of Honchkrow, Zygarde-10%, and Metagross. Leftovers is used for passive recovery and goes really well with Protect. Synchronize is the only ability worth using, as inflicting the same status to the foe is more helpful, and it also synergizes with Heal Bell. Usage Tips Use Umbreon to check threats such as Nidoqueen and Swellow throughout the game while utilizing Wish to heal Umbreon as well as pass it to other teammates that need it. However, be careful when using the Wish + Protect combination when healing Umbreon, as your opponent could easily see the Protect coming and take advantage of it by gaining momentum or setting up. Heal Bell only has 8 PP, so use it conservatively. For example, if you have a Pokemon that is burned but doesn't mind the Attack drop, saving Heal Bell for when other Pokemon get poisoned or burned might be better. Team Options Nidoqueen can set up Stealth Rock and Toxic Spikes and is also able to check the Fairy-, Fighting-, and Bug-type attacks and Pokemon that Umbreon's weak against while appreciating the Wish support and Umbreon's ability to switch into Psychic- and Ice-type attacks. Mantine is also a good teammate for the nice synergy that it provides, and it can also provide support with Defog. Diancie can pack Heal Bell to allow Umbreon to carry another move and benefits from the Wish support. In general, any bulky Pokemon that appreciates Wish or Heal Bell support, such as Mega Blastoise, Gigalith, Rhyperior, Bronzong, and Escavalier can be a nice option for a teammate.

Moves Foul Play is Umbreon's most reliable STAB move; it allows Umbreon to significantly damage physical attackers such as Scizor, Mamoswine, and Mega Beedrill. Heal Bell heals Umbreon's teammates and itself from status ailments, which also makes Umbreon a more reliable special wall. Toxic not only gives Umbreon an easier time beating setup sweepers, such as Latias, but also lets it badly poison common switch-ins, such as Terrakion and Infernape, and slowly wear them down. Wish allows Umbreon to recover its own health as well as heal its teammates up. Protect combines with Wish to give Umbreon an easier time healing itself up and also allows Umbreon to scout common Choice item users, such as Hydreigon and Infernape, and gain more recovery from Leftovers. Alternatively, Moonlight gives Umbreon a more reliable form of self-recovery; in combination with Wish, Umbreon can use Moonlight on a turn it would otherwise use Protect on and gain more health back. However, Moonlight's low PP means Umbreon can be stalled out rather easily. Set Details Maximum investment in HP and Special Defense, combined with a Calm nature, allows Umbreon to take on special attackers such as Latias, Hydreigon, and Nidoqueen as easily as possible. 4 Speed EVs allow Umbreon to outpace uninvested Scizor and hit it with a Foul Play before it gets to hit Umbreon with a super effective move. Synchronize allows Umbreon to punish certain Toxic users such as Rotom-H, Slowbro, and Swampert that attempt to badly poison it. Leftovers provides passive recovery, which helps Umbreon retain longevity. Usage Tips Switch in Umbreon on special attackers such as Latias, Hydreigon, and Nidoqueen and beat them via attacking with Foul Play when ever Umbreon is at a comfortable amount of HP; this is achieved by continuously using Wish in tandem with Protect or Moonlight. Hence, Umbreon needs to stay as healthy as possible throughout the match. Generally, you should use Wish either when Umbreon is low on HP or when a teammate should be healed up. Use Protect to scout for potential mixed special attackers with Fighting coverage, such as Superpower Hydreigon and Nidoking, and Choice-locked Pokemon like Latias and Volcanion. Be wary of using Protect against certain potentially Choice-locked Pokemon that may utilize setup moves, such as Scizor and Terrakion. In addition, be wary of switching in Umbreon on potential Trick users such as Togekiss and Latias. Umbreon could also be switched in on certain physical attackers, such as Mega Aerodactyl and Mega Sharpedo. Avoid spamming Foul Play against teams with Justified users such as Cobalion, Terrakion, and Lucario, as they can easily take advantage of it to boost their Attack. Despite its access to Toxic and Foul Play, Umbreon heavily struggles to beat certain setup sweepers such as Cobalion and Terrakion that beat it by virtue of their typings. Hence, it is wise to not stay in on them, as they use Umbreon as setup fodder. Do not stay in on Taunt users, such as Krookodile and Jellicent, because they can reliably shut down and beat Umbreon. Use Heal Bell when either Umbreon or its teammates are afflicted with a status ailment, such as Toxic, while keeping in mind Heal Bell's low PP. Team Options Umbreon fits well on balance and stall. Fairy-types, such as Mega Altaria and Togekiss, and Flying-types like Moltres and Crobat can handle Fighting-types such as Infernape and Cobalion. The aforementioned Fairy-types can also utilize Heal Bell so Umbreon can freely run Toxic, and the Flying-types appreciate Umbreon's Wish support because of their Stealth Rock weakness. Entry hazard removers such as Gligar and Tentacruel ensure that Umbreon won't have to take residual damage each time upon switching in. The latter pairs exceptionally well with Umbreon not only because it can take on certain physical attackers that scare Umbreon out, such as Cobalion and Scizor, but also because it removes Toxic Spikes by virtue of its Poison typing. Physically defensive Pokemon like Swampert and Mega Slowbro pair well with Umbreon thanks to their ability to handle the majority of physical attackers, such as Infernape and Cobalion. They are also capable of punishing common Taunt users like Krookodile with a potential Scald burn. Additionally, wallbreakers, such as Scizor, Volcanion, and Primarina, appreciate Umbreon's Wish support and also scare out setup sweepers that attempt to set up on Umbreon.

Moves Z-Charm makes Umbreon able to beat powerful physical attackers such as Mega Gyarados, Choice Scarf Haxorus, Choice Band Garchomp, and Choice Band Dragonite lacking Superpower. Foul Play enables Umbreon to beat physical attackers such as non-Substitute Landorus-T, Jirachi, and Mega Pinsir. Moonlight allows Umbreon to shake off damage after using Z-Charm on Choice Band Garchomp, Choice Scarf Haxorus, or Mega Charizard X or after using Snarl against Tapu Lele or Primarina. Snarl makes Umbreon able to beat Tapu Lele and Primarina due to the Special Attack drop. Toxic can be used over Snarl to take on walls like Porygon2 and non-Rest Slowbro. Set Details Fairum Z allows Umbreon to use Z-Charm, which allows it to beat Pokemon such as non-Superpower Choice Band Dragonite and Choice Band Garchomp. Inner Focus allows it to avoid flinches from Jirachi's Iron Head and Mega Gyarados's Waterfall. 252 HP EVs and 228 Defense EVs enable Umbreon to take attacks from Garchomp, Zeraora, and Landorus-T as well as two Outrages from non-Superpower Choice Band Dragonite. 28 Special Defense EVs with a Calm nature allow Umbreon to survive Normalium Z-boosted Hyper Beam from bulky Meloetta after Laser Focus as well as tank Moonblast from Primarina and non-Taunt Tapu Lele. Usage Tips Against Mega Metagross, do not use Z-Charm, because it can forgo Mega Evolving to avoid the Attack drop with Clear Body; instead, use Foul Play twice to beat it. Also, do not use Z-Charm against Victini, as Umbreon already OHKOes or 2HKOes Victini with Foul Play, and Victini can't do anything back. Umbreon is a good pick against both Mega Charizard X and Y, as Z-Charm + Foul Play will take care of Mega Charizard X while Snarl + Moonlight will allow Umbreon to stall out sun turns to beat Mega Charizard Y. It can also take on Jirachi due to Inner Focus, and use Foul Play to 2HKO it. For Meloetta, it is best to use Snarl turn 1; if it uses Calm Mind turn 2, use Snarl again, and if it used Laser Focus, use Moonlight turn 3 to be able to recover off Breakneck Blitz. Umbreon should avoid being sent out on most Leech Seed users, with the exception of Whimsicott, and walls such as Mega Venusaur, Serperior, Clefable, Registeel, and Mega Slowbro, as it cannot do enough damage to them to beat them and cannot do major damage back to them. Umbreon can win against Whimsicott only because its Dark typing allows it to avoid Prankster Leech Seed and Taunt. Team Options Pokemon that can take on Fighting-types like Kommo-o and Terrakion such as Tapu Fini and Mega Diancie make good partners for Umbreon. In return, Umbreon can take on Mega Metagross for them. Whimsicott and Mega Sableye are great counters to stall Deoxys-S, which Umbreon is unable to take care of. In return, Umbreon can take on Fairy-types like Tapu Lele and Primarina, Fire-types like Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y, and Steel-types like Mega Metagross and Magnezone for Whimsicott. Flying-types like Togekiss and Flyinium Z Landorus-T can help against Grass-types such as Mega Venusaur and Serperior and Fighting-types that Umbreon can't beat like Kommo-o and Mega Gallade. In return, Umbreon can take on Naganadel and Mega Charizard Y for them. Steel-types such as Magnezone, Mega Metagross, and Mega Mawile are great to beat Fairy-type Pokemon that Umbreon has trouble beating such as Mega Diancie, Mega Gardevoir, and Tapu Fini; in return, Umbreon can take on Mega Charizard Y for them. Electric-type Pokemon that can beat Mega Slowbro like Magnezone and Zeraora make great partners for Umbreon. In return, Umbreon can take care of Ground-type Pokemon for them. Fire-types such as Mega Charizard X, Heatran, and Incineroar are great for taking on Steel-types like Registeel and Ferrothorn. Umbreon is able to take on Dragon-types like Haxorus and Garchomp in return.

Moves Wish is a reliable recovery move for Umbreon and its teammates. Protect ensures that Wish succeeds while allowing Umbreon to scout for common Choice item users such as Hydreigon and Mienshao and gain more Leftovers recovery. Moonlight provides Umbreon with a more reliable form of recovery, allowing it to stay healthy without having to stay in an additional turn to receive its own Wish. Heal Bell provides Umbreon's team with cleric support. Foul Play is a reliable move that causes a lot of damage to many of the physical attackers in the tier. Set Details A Calm nature alongside the listed EV spread maximizes Umbreon's special bulk. Synchronize is a useful ability alongside Heal Bell, providing Umbreon with opportunities to cause some chaos Pokemon such as Empoleon, Tentacruel, and Sableye. Leftovers provides passive recovery and increased longevity. Usage Tips Umbreon can stand up 1v1 against a great number of attackers of UU; examples are Gyarados, Mega Aerodactyl, Metagross, Mega Sceptile, Mamoswine, and Mega Sharpedo. Umbreon is best used to sponge a variety of high-powered hits in order to provide excellent team support. While it can handle many all-out attackers and Choice item users fairly easily, Umbreon struggles against several setup Pokemon such as Nasty Plot Celebi, Nasty Plot Infernape, Swords Dance Cobalion, and Bulk Up Conkeldurr. Foul Play alongside Wish + Protect allows Umbreon to be self-reliant in certain situations. Team Options Umbreon functions well alongside Pokemon such as Crobat or Gligar, as they can take on some of its Fighting-type counters and provide utility and pivot support with Defog and U-turn. Umbreon works well alongside Swampert, as most Taunt users, such as Aerodactyl, Krookodile, and Crobat, are frail or fear Swampert's typing. Umbreon appreciates Rapid Spin and Defog support, as this makes its job a little easier.

This set capitalizes on Umbreon's team-supporting potential. Umbreon can switch into many special attackers in the tier and can comfortably use one of its team-supporting moves. Wish can restore 197 HP to a teammate and keeps Umbreon's team in a good fighting condition. Foul Play is Umbreon's best attacking option, as even special attackers like Raikou and Zapdos have higher Attack stats than Umbreon. Furthermore, Foul Play can deal significant damage to physical attackers that try to exploit Umbreon's lower Defense stat. It OHKOes Darmanitan after Stealth Rock damage, 2HKOes all Flygon, and can even score a solid 3HKO on Choice Scarf Heracross. The ability to remove status with Heal Bell is very useful, as it can give a crippled sweeper a second chance to sweep. This also works very well with Synchronize, as Umbreon can heal its status condition after inflicting it on the opponent. However, Umbreon can trade the ability to clear status for the ability to inflict it with Toxic. Between Wish and Protect, Umbreon can quickly build up Toxic damage and wear down Pokemon that can't deal significant damage to it. Yawn can shuffle the opponent's team and can render a Pokemon useless for the remainder of the match. Protect allows Umbreon to scout the opponent's next move, take better advantage of Wish and Yawn by negating the charging turn, and build up Toxic damage. However, if your opponent predicts your Protect turn, they could use it to set up a sweep. The EVs on this set allow Umbreon to be a reasonably effective special wall, which is how it switches into battle to support its team. Pursuit can be used in the third moveslot to trap special attackers with a weakness to Dark-type attacks, such as Victini and Azelf, but Umbreon's poor Attack makes this ineffective. Moonlight can be used to instantly restore HP, but it detracts from Umbreon's role as a team supporter. Umbreon should be paired with Pokemon that resist the Fighting-type attacks that are often aimed at it. Crobat is one of the safest switches into the common Fighting-types of the tier, Heracross and Mienshao. Defensive Ghost-types like Sableye and Cofagrigus also counter Fighting-types effectively and can drain the offensive pressure Fighting-types put on Umbreon. Slowbro and Mew can check Fighting-types, but they also lose to Heracross, one of the biggest threats in the tier. Using Umbreon alongside a Fighting-type of your own is also effective, as Steel-types such as Cobalion and Bisharp may try to take advantage of their Dark-type resistance to start a sweep, and the former can even gain an attack boost via Justified if it switches into Foul Play. Heracross is a good partner as it can provide some much needed offensive pressure for Umbreon's team.

Moves This set is capable of enhancing Umbreon's strengths and weaknesses while also giving it more longevity. Curse boosts the power of Payback, which allows Umbreon to hit the foe with a move that has an effective Base Power of 150, since Umbreon generally tends to move last because of its low Speed, which Curse lowers even further. Curse also helps Umbreon boost its physical bulk, which is what most Pokemon will try to target, since physical moves such as Superpower and Close Combat are what usually can OHKO Umbreon. Wish + Protect helps Umbreon heal while also being able to heal up its teammates or scout for a set on an opposing Pokemon. A lot of bulky offense teams will also rely on Explosion to stop a Curse Umbreon, and Protect can be helpful in such a situation. Set Details Leftovers helps keep Umbreon healthy and negate sand damage. A Careful nature with maximum HP and Special Defense investment allows Umbreon to not worry about special attackers; very few Pokemon are capable of threatening Umbreon with a special move, and one of that would be, Focus Blast Gengar, can be OHKOed with Payback. Pokemon such as Infernape and Lucario can also carry Focus Blast, but they more commonly run the physical counterpart, Close Combat. Usage Tips It is possible for Umbreon to set up versus special attackers like Starmie and non Will-O-Wisp-Rotom or against a Tyranitar that is Choice-locked into a move like Crunch or Pursuit. If the opponent uses a move that causes limited damage to Umbreon, like Crunch or Pursuit, the best option would be to set up with Curse at that point. However, if it is a move that is capable of inflicting 30% or higher damage, it would be better to use Wish. The goal is to keep setting up while using Wish to heal Umbreon from any damage it takes and then potentially sweep an opposing team. Umbreon can also use Latias as a Pokemon to set up on, but it needs to be wary of Toxic or Trick. It is important that if the opponent runs a Skarmory or another Steel-type, you need to take it out before you reveal that your Umbreon is running the Curse set, as that would cue to your opponent to try to preserve their Steel-types longer than they should. Team Options Steel-types are what heavily punish Umbreon, as they will always be able to safely switch into it as Umbreon is passive and cannot affect them due to Umbreon being passive and unable to affect them with a status move like Thunder Wave or Will-O-Wisp. Magnezone aids Umbreon in this regard by trapping Skarmory and Scizor, as well as Lucario if Lucario is running a physical set and Magnezone is using Choice Scarf. Umbreon could pair itself with a Heal Bell or Aromatherapy user in order to remove a status like burn or poison, which will prevent it from potentially sweeping by reducing its damage output or gradually causing it to faint. Other Pokemon that can safely switch into Umbreon would be Breloom and Leftovers Heatran. The former can threaten it with Spore or a combination of Substitute + Focus punch, so having a Pokemon to absorb the Spore and the hit would be nice. Zapdos, Latias, and Celebi are among a few that can take on Breloom, but make sure that they don't take the Spore. By looking at what all Pokemon your opponent has revealed and by predicting what the unrevealed Pokemon, if any, of your opponent would be, you can determine what Pokemon in your team would have the least impact against the opposing team and let that Pokemon absorb the Spore. Heatran can be handled by Milotic and Clefable. Clefable especially is a good option to handle the Leftovers variant with Knock Off, limiting the number of times Heatran can come onto the field. Since physical Fighting-types are quite common in the tier, Umbreon with teammates to take on such users is helpful. Bold Rotom and Jolly Gliscor can take on Lucario, but they still would need to worry about Lucario running Crunch or Shuca Berry with Ice Punch, respectively. Latias can handle Infernape. Nidoqueen is especially a nice option, as it helps absorb Toxic Spikes on the field.

Wish is yet another useful tool with which Umbreon can use Baton Pass to support its teammates. The 0 Speed IV and Speed-lowering nature ensure Baton Pass goes last so that Umbreon--and not its recipient--takes the incoming hit.

This set can be exceedingly difficult to stop if used in conjunction with Magneton to eliminate Skarmory; Poison-types will still shut Umbreon down completely though. Houndoom is also a nice partner for this set as it can Pursuit Poison-types such as Gengar and Weezing. All Umbreon has to do is switch in safely; it can then begin a cycle of misery for the opponent by trapping the foe with Mean Look, hitting it with Toxic, and blocking recovery with Taunt, healing off any damage taken in the process with Moonlight or Wish.

Umbreon can also Baton Pass Curse boosts. Once again, it can block any attempts at phazing from the likes of Aerodactyl with Taunt and set up Curse to better tank physical hits while relying on its amazing Special Defense to sponge special attacks. Once it is done setting up, Umbreon can Baton Pass to a fast sweeper with a White Herb for a winning sweep.

This set is best used with Perish Song Celebi and boosting sweepers. Once you get Umbreon in safely, Taunt phazers and stat-boosters, use Mean Look, and pass to a counter. This strategy is harder than it seems, but it can be extremely effective in the hands of a skilled player. Wish is better if you can use it with proper prediction, especially as it can potentially heal a teammate, but Moonlight's instant healing is also highly useful. However, note that Moonlight's healing is halved in sandstorm. 224 Speed EVs enable Umbreon to outspeed Dragon Dance Tyranitar. Maximize HP and dump the rest in Defense.

Set Description Charm is one of the main reasons why Umbreon is so hard to break through. The purpose of this move is to stop Curse sweepers like Snorlax in their tracks. It can also be used to soften the blows of Explosion and other physical attacks from slower Pokemon like Exeggutor, Rhydon, and even Machamp—though in Machamp's case, Umbreon must beware of Cross Chop's high critical hit rate. Pursuit allows Umbreon to wear down Pokemon like Exeggutor, Gengar, and Misdreavus, none of which can hit it very hard without using Explosion, punishing them with hefty damage if they try to switch out. Rest is Umbreon's preferred recovery option, since it allows it to get rid of poison or paralysis, which both pose a severe threat to Umbreon and limit its effectiveness. Rest also notably enables Umbreon to check threats like Body Slam Snorlax more effectively. However, it puts Umbreon out of commission for two turns, making it more vulnerable to offensive pressure. Therefore, Sleep Talk is recommended so Umbreon keeps fulfilling its tasks when asleep. However, Toxic is also a great option to weaken the foe, force switches, and threaten non-Rest variants of Snorlax, Zapdos, and Tyranitar. In conjunction with Pursuit and Spikes support, Toxic can wear down opposing Pokemon quite quickly. Alongside Toxic, Umbreon's more flexible recovery option in Moonlight can be given consideration if Umbreon can avoid or be cured of status and the low amount of PP isn't problematic despite the fact that Umbreon is an entirely stall-based Pokemon. Team Options Outside of its defensive utility, the main reason to use Umbreon is its ability to reliably weaken any Psychic- and Ghost-type Pokemon with Pursuit, something greatly appreciated by Pokemon such as Machamp or mono-attacking Snorlax. Umbreon is also a good option for Spikes-based teams, since it's the only viable Pursuit user that fares well against what is arguably the best spinner available, Starmie. Even though Starmie takes fairly low damage from Umbreon's Pursuit and has plenty of Recover PP, constant residual damage from poison and the threat of Pursuit will eventually see it struggling to keep Spikes off the field. If Umbreon happens to pack Sleep Talk instead of Toxic, your Spikes setter should be able to inflict Starmie with poison so Umbreon can still heavily pressure it. Both Cloyster and Forretress can struggle against Gengar and Misdreavus, so once again Pursuit is a great help. However, keep in mind that Umbreon's Special Attack is so lackluster that Rest Misdreavus can stall it out. As Umbreon relies on Charm to handle boosting Snorlax, its worst nightmare is Belly Drum Snorlax. It is therefore a good idea to use it alongside Skarmory on more defensive teams, as Skarmory is much better suited to handling Belly Drum Snorlax, whereas Umbreon can stave off Snorlax variants that Skarmory struggles with, such as Fire move Curselax.
