Analysis

If it manages to come in safely, Voltorb can set up both screens and then either use Explosion or Volt Switch to bring in a healthy setup sweeper such as Shellder. However, Alolan Vulpix and Cottonee are more easily able to open windows of opportunity for their teammates, as their methods of supporting a setup sweeper take only one turn compared to Voltorb taking two.

Analysis

Moves Rain Dance ensures weather due to Voltorb's extremely high Speed. It also makes Thunder, Voltorb's best attack, 100% accurate. Thunder is deadly under rain. However, it's too unreliable to be used without rain, so be sure to have Rain Dance up before you use the move. Volt Switch is an effective switching move, especially when coupled with STAB. It is useful in many situations and can to ensure Voltorb's survival in tight spots. Taunt is a good choice to counter the opponent's lead and status Pokemon, and can also stop boosting sweepers in their tracks. It is especially useful against entry hazard users such as Dwebble, as well as being Voltorb's only real niche over Elekid. However, it's next to useless against anything else and Thunder Wave can be used instead. Set Details Static is a useful ability in any situation, and offers a decent paralysis chance and that can cripple enemies. Aftermath can be equally useful by damaging defensive checks to Voltorb that manage to knock it out. Item-wise, a Damp Rock is almost mandatory for anything running Rain Dance. Eviolite should be used to bolster Voltorb's pitiful defenses in lieu of rain. The latter item prevents many OHKOs, notably from Choice Scarf users such as Pawniard and Mienfoo. The given EV spread allows Voltorb to deal significant damage and, with a Timid nature, to outspeed almost the entire metagame. Usage Tips This set is useful as a support lead and can deal serious damage to boot. Use the Rain Dance variant on rain teams as a Rain Dance user and a rain sweeper. The Eviolite variant is an excellent status lead on any team. Voltorb's tremendous Speed allows it to revenge kill quite a few Pokemon, as well as to outspeed and KO some other common leads. Team Options This set can't run Hidden Power Ice, so an Ice- or Grass-type is welcome to deal with Ground-types. Grass also resists Electric, so a Fire- or Flying-type helps as well. Even a Bug-type might be helpful, and might also be used to counter the many Psychic-type special walls that check this set. Of course, anything with an ability boosted by rain also benefits from this set.

Analysis

Moves Taunt is one of Voltorb's niches and is always an extremely useful move in LC. It's also the only thing offensive Voltorb has on Elekid. Thunderbolt is Voltorb's only reliable high Base Power STAB special attack, and is Voltorb's main means of sweeping. It will deal a sizable chunk of damage to many Pokemon with a Life Orb. Hidden Power Ice is Voltorb's source of coverage on the two types that resist Electric: Ground and Grass. It's moderately powerful with the boosting items that can be used with this set. Set Details Static is a powerful ability that can provide Voltorb with the capability to spread paralysis even with only offensive moves. Aftermath can be quite nice as well, making a revenge kill by a teammate much more likely. Life Orb increases Voltorb's damage output. HP IVs are reduced to 1 in order to limit Life Orb recoil while maintaining Hidden Power Ice. The same EV spread as used on the first set is advised here, and it is equally useful because it allows Voltorb to outspeed and OHKO or 2HKO most of the metagame. Timid allows Voltorb to hit 20 Speed and outrun almost every other unboosted Pokemon. Usage Tips Voltorb is an effective attacker and one of very few decent Electric-types in LC. It can be used as a special attacker on any team needing some Electric-type coverage. The Choice Specs variant of this set can be used as a powerful pivot, and with the right switching, pairs well with a different Life Orb user such as Abra. Feel free to attach a Choice Scarf to this set as well, as it allows Voltorb to outspeed the entirety of LC, even other Choice Scarf users. Team Options Some defensive allies, like such as Tirtouga and Koffing, are helpful to this set. Voltorb's pitiful defenses need some backup. Attackers to counter Rock- and Steel-types are also welcome, because this set can't handle those very well. For the Life Orb set, something with U-turn to build a VoltTurn core is useful. As mentioned previously, Abra is also very useful.

Analysis

Thunderbolt is Voltorb's main option for dishing out damage. With its decent Special Attack stat, great Speed, and a fantastic STAB attack, coming in and firing off Thunderbolts should work out well. Hidden Power Ice covers a lot of holes in Voltorb's coverage, primarily against Ground-types. Explosion is handy for leaving a lasting dent in the opponent's team before taking your leave, and with Life Orb and the given EVs, Voltorb can generate quite a punch with it. Substitute helps Voltorb stay safe while on the attack, as well as easing prediction. Signal Beam is a bit of a redundant coverage filler, but you don't have much else to really put there, and it is a better move to hit Grass-types. Signal Beam also deals a little bit more damage to Psychic-types than Thunderbolt, along with being a reliable move to blast Snover with (if you followed the Hidden Power Ice path). The nature is a Speed boost preference, and it doesn't really matter which one you opt for. The given EVs maximize the values you need the most; Voltorb hits max Special Attack and with a Speed boosting nature and 200 Speed EVs Voltorb hits a value of 20, which outpaces basically every Pokemon lacking a Choice Scarf in the Little Cup tier. Leftover EVs give Voltorb an extra point in HP and a bit of extra strength in Explosion. Even with its insane Speed, Voltorb is still open to priority, and due to its mediocre defenses and the HP it loses from Life Orb, along with a good chance that sandstorm or hail are in play, a priority attack could mean a quick end to Voltorb's stay in the match. Any Pokemon with a Choice Scarf and a decently powerful attack can threaten Voltorb greatly. Hidden Power Fire is an option over Hidden Power Ice; while it does lose a lot of coverage, it hits Voltorb's possibly number one switch-in, Ferroseed, for huge amounts of damage. Magnemite can be an invaluable partner, as it can trap and kill the opponent's Steel-type Pokemon that can hinder Voltorb's sweep. Gastly and other that are immune to Ground-type attacks also pair well with Voltorb.

Analysis

Voltorb makes a great Rain Dance lead because it is the fastest Pokemon in Little Cup capable of setting up Rain Dance. After it sets up Rain Dance, it can attack with a powerful Thunder, which has 100% accuracy thanks to the rain. Taunt can stop other leads from setting up entry hazards or screens, which will always work, apart from the occasional Diglett lead with Stealth Rock. Even in this generation with the nerf, Explosion lets Voltorb go out with a bang, taking down practically any foe that does not carry an Eviolite. Damp Rock is the best item Voltorb can use, as it keeps the rain up for eight turns as opposed to five. The EV spread ensures that Voltorb is as fast as possible and hits as hard as it can with Thunder. Protect can be used over Taunt to stop Fake Out leads from getting free damage on you. Volt Switch is a moderately powerful STAB move, and can be used for scouting and dealing damage while switching if you don't want to run Explosion. Static is considered the standard ability on Voltorb, because your opponent has a 51% chance of paralysis if they attack with two contact hits.

Analysis

This set focuses on trying to catch a Special Attack boost or two from Charge Beam. Charge Beam deals decent damage, receives a STAB boost, and can nab Voltorb a Special Attack boost in the process. Substitute helps you pick and choose when to try and pick up a Charge Beam boost, as well as protect Voltorb from status. Thunderbolt and Hidden Power Ice form the attacking core and can deal a high amount of damage with even a single boost. Oran Berry allows Voltorb to retain an extra sum of HP for when you are playing around with Substitute, and keeps Voltorb's health at a reasonable level after it starts getting low the first time around. Again, a different Hidden Power of your choice is usable here, such as Hidden Power Fire for Ferroseed. Life Orb could be used over Oran Berry, but you may find Voltorb dying a lot faster than you're comfortable with. Ferroseed is a real pain for this set; therefore, Magnemite or other means of dispatching Ferroseed will give Voltorb much greater success on the battlefield.

Analysis

With its combination of high Speed, good coverage, and useful utility moves, Voltorb can succeed at disrupting and destroying popular leads. Defensively weak leads get hit by a STAB Thunderbolt from Voltorb's decent Special Attack stat. Hidden Power Ice is used for near perfect coverage alongside Thunderbolt, and gives Voltorb a chance against Gligar and Diglett leads (though in order to beat Diglett, Sucker Punch must be used), although Phanpy will barely be scratched by it. Taunt stops weather and Stealth Rock leads from fulfilling their objectives, but watch out as many Stealth Rock leads carry Earthquake. Protect and Sucker Punch beat the common Fake Out leads, such as Meowth and Chimchar, by avoiding their Fake Out or breaking their Focus Sash, respectively. Finally, when Voltorb's usefulness comes to an end, Explosion is devastatingly powerful even from only 10 Attack, often knocking a Pokemon out along with it. Protect may seem like the best option against Meowth as Fake Out will do far more damage than Voltorb's Sucker Punch. However, Thunderbolt will never OHKO Meowth, so with Protect, Meowth will get a chance to use one of its stronger attacks or U-turn. Sucker Punch will break Meowth's Focus Sash first turn and force Meowth to switch or get knocked out next turn. The same goes for Chimchar, although you have to watch out for a priority move of its own. Lead Voltorb functions best with Pokemon that can comfortably switch into Ground-type leads, which Voltorb has the most problems with. Aqua Tail Gligar can switch into Onix, Hippopotas, and, as a bonus, Choice Scarf Machop without much problem, though by switching, you give the Ground-type Pokemon a turn to set up Stealth Rock. Voltorb can usually do its task by itself, so it has relatively little need for team support. However, the ones that can support Voltorb will greatly help it. Flying-type Pokemon are great teammates, being able to switch in to Ground-type attacks, which Voltorb attracts. In return, Voltorb has access to a fast Taunt, which will prevent all leads bar Diglett from setting up Stealth Rock. Good choices for Flying-type teammates include Mantyke, which can wreak havoc without losing one-fourth of its health from switching in.

Analysis

Thanks to its high Speed, Voltorb can act as a great Rain Dance supporter. Even with Voltorb's frailness, it has decent enough bulk to avoid being OHKOed by most opponents. It has access to a powerful STAB Thunder, which is granted perfect accuracy in the rain. Thunder also has a 30% chance to paralyze that is useful for slowing down Choice Scarf users. The best part about Voltorb is its access to Explosion, which can deal with Pokemon that are too bulky and give a free switch-in to a Swift Swim sweeper. Taunt stops opponents that try to set up on the same turn as Voltorb, which is especially important against Trick Room teams as they give most rain teams trouble. Light Screen is an option to help your rain-abusing sweepers last longer, and gives Voltorb something useful to do when given free turns; for example, it is useful against Protect users that try to stall out the rain. Hidden Power Ice can be used over Taunt or Light Screen to hit Gligar and Diglett. However, a fast Taunt is almost too good to pass up because of how badly Rain Dance teams are countered by Trick Room teams. If your team has troubles with Snover, Hidden Power Fire is an option to eliminate the tree, but it doesn't have much use outside of that. As Rain Dance Voltorb is mostly a support Pokemon, it needs little support of its own. However, having Pokemon that can safely switch into Earthquake can be a benefit to Voltorb. Swift Swim Mantyke works especially well as it threatens them with STAB Water-type moves and can effectively abuse rain if Voltorb sets it up. Rain teams in general greatly benefit from the removal of Snover and Hippopotas, but an opponent who knows she is facing a rain team will do everything in her power to keep her weather setter alive. Wynaut traps both of them, can avoid being 2HKOed by most Snover and Hippopotas, and can use a combination of Encore, Mirror Coat, and Counter to knock them out. Swift Swim sweepers such as Omanyte, Buizel, and Kabuto are all great partners to Voltorb, all benefiting from Rain Dance. Voltorb will greatly benefit from Wynaut, which can trap Snover and Hippopotas, and dispose of them with the appropriate move. Wynaut can also defeat Choice Scarf users, and with them removed, Voltorb will be the fastest Pokemon, being able to easily sweep late-game.

Analysis

The Defense investment allows Voltorb to always survive Earthquake from mixed bulky attacker Wailmer. 40 Attack EVs with a Timid nature are used to guarantee that Explosion OHKOes Trapinch and Wailmer. Thunder Wave is Voltorb’s best form of speed control, effectively neutering frail Pokemon that rely on their Speed such as Abra, Anorith, and Gastly. Thief gives Voltorb another option to cripple opposing Pokemon by removing their recovery in Sitrus Berry and using it itself or denying a sweep by removing their pinch Berries. Substitute is used to punish status attempts from slower Pokemon such as Porygon and Chinchou, giving Voltorb a free turn to attack or cripple the opposing Pokemon with Thunder Wave. Hidden Power Grass OHKOes Rock / Ground types such as Larvitar and Onix and lets Voltorb fight Electric-immune Pokemon without committing to Explosion. It is also worth mentioning that Hidden Power Grass into Thunderbolt KOes mixed bulky attacker Wailmer. Finally, Explosion OHKOes most of the tier, preventing troublesome Pokemon like Abra and Bagon from snowballing out of control and allowing it to beat otherwise strong checks in Chinchou and opposing Voltorb. Caution should be taken to avoid using Explosion into a Ghost-type, however. Voltorb pairs well with Pokemon that have trouble with Diglett and Trapinch, such as Houndour, Abra, and Elekid. Voltorb is an appealing target for Diglett and Trapinch, allowing it to force them out early, as well as having the potential to trade with them, albeit unreliably. Elekid in particular forms a potent offensive core with Voltorb, overloading their shared checks and smothering offense with their Speed and support options, like Light Screen and Thunder Wave. Wailmer is a good teammate, as it can struggle into Doduo, Staryu, and Gastly, and is a great switch-in to the Ground-types that will inevitably trap and remove Voltorb. Voltorb has strong synergy with Cacnea, as it can use Spikes against Diglett, Cubone, Trapinch, and Chinchou lacking Ice Beam. Voltorb in turn switches into Doduo locked into Drill Peck. Lastly, (add comma) Porygon and Trapinch can reliably remove Diglett in the event that Voltorb loses the Speed tie and remain healthy enough to check Abra or Elekid later in the match.

Analysis

Thunder is Voltorb's strongest STAB attack and makes use of Rain Dance to ensure its perfect accuracy and nails opposing Water- and Flying-types such as Dewgong and Pidgeot. Light Screen is yet another utility move in Voltorb's arsenal that improves the matchup against certain opposing leads such as Glalie and Magby. Taunt stops common opposing leads such as Glalie and Venomoth from using Spikes and Sleep Powder, respectively. Explosion allows Voltorb to conserve precious turns of rain so a Swift Swim teammate such as Huntail can attempt to sweep. Maximum Speed EVs allow Voltorb to outspeed the entire metagame, while maximum Attack EVs enable the strongest Explosion possible. Because Voltorb also has Thunder and acts as a suicide lead, running a Naive nature is more optimal than running a Jolly one. Static is fairly situational, but it is infinitely more useful than Soundproof and can potentially paralyze an opposing lead to potentially generate free turns once a Swift Swim user such as Huntail comes in. Silk Scarf increases the power of Voltorb's Explosion, severely denting opposing leads such as Glalie and Hitmonchan. Offensive Pokemon that have access to Swift Swim such as Huntail, Relicanth, and Seaking are mandatory teammates for Voltorb, as they need rain being up to function and sweep. While opposing Sunny Day users such as Bellossom and Tangela are extremely threatening for rain teams and can easily survive Voltorb's Explosion, Voltorb can use Taunt to prevent them from setting up Sunny Day and countersweeping the turn it uses Explosion.

Analysis

Voltorb is a good revenge killer, wallbreaker, and potential cleaner thanks to its high damage output with moves like Explosion and its ability to outspeed the entire unboosted metagame. Hidden Power Ice hits Grass- and Ground-types, notably Gloom and Cubone. Explosion is a great burst damage option that lets Voltorb break through special walls and get in an ally for free. The combination of Substitute and Petaya Berry lets Voltorb become even scarier, letting it nearly always OHKO uninvested Tropius with Hidden Power Ice and Corsola with +1 Thunderbolt. Substitute also lets Voltorb scout for potential switches and status moves. A Naive nature lets Voltorb avoid an OHKO from Tropius's Earthquake without lowering its power and Speed. Offensive Voltorb finds itself on hyper offense and offense teams. Thanks to its wallbreaking capabilities, Voltorb is able to create holes in the opposing team for sweepers like Beedrill and Anorith to clean up. However, Voltorb has poor matchups against Ground-, Grass-, and Electric-types such as Onix, Gloom, and Chinchou. Partners such as Seaking, Ponyta, and Onix can help chip down or remove them, respectively, creating openings for Voltorb to clean up late-game. Chlorophyll and Swift Swim users like Tropius and Seaking can outspeed Voltorb under their respective weather conditions and can easily OHKO Voltorb because of its frailty. Seaking can stop Tropius by setting up with Rain Dance and using Ice Beam, while opposing Seaking get easily stopped by ally Gloom, which threatens Hidden Power Grass, or Mightyena, which can tank hits from both Tropius and Seaking. Special walls and bulky Grass-types like Porygon and Gloom can easily tank Voltorb's Thunderbolt and can use Protect against Explosion if needed. Partners like Ponyta can heavily chip special walls and bulky Grass-types with Double-Edge and Fire Blast, respectively, letting Voltorb come in later and clean up.

Analysis

Voltorb is a threatening lead option for rain teams thanks to its high Speed stat and access to Explosion. Rain Dance is almost always used first, setting up the rain for sweepers such as Seaking and Horsea. Once rain has been set up, Voltorb can use Explosion to safely get in rain sweepers like Horsea without wasting any more turns of rain. Thanks to Silk Scarf, Explosion OHKOes bulky Pokemon such as Gloom and Noctowl. Thunder 2HKOs Corsola, preventing it from tanking Explosion. Thunder can also pressure Protect users like Mightyena and Seaking, stopping them from absorbing Explosion with Protect. Taunt can stop opposing weather setters, notably Koffing, Tropius, Gloom, Ponyta. As an alternative option, Voltorb can use Hidden Power Water to threaten Ground-types like Onix and Rhyhorn, which would otherwise safely wall Voltorb. Voltorb takes full advantage of Static when against physical attackers such as Aipom, potentially hindering them for the whole game. A Naive nature is used over Hasty to keep Voltorb's attacks strong while also surviving Earthquake from sun sweeper Tropius. With the full Attack investment, Explosion OHKOes bulky foes such as Gloom. Pokemon that benefit from rain, like Seaking, Wartortle, Horsea, and Lombre, are all great partners for Voltorb, as they all highly appreciate Voltorb as a rain setter that safely gets them in with Explosion. Even with Taunt at Voltorb's disposal, Tropius is still an issue, as it can take Voltorb's attacks and come back later to set sun. For this, rain sweepers that carry Ice-type coverage like Seaking help pin Tropius. Ice-type coverage also covers other Grass-types like Lileep. Rhyhorn and Onix can wall Voltorb if it lacks Hidden Power Water, though Voltorb's teammates cover for its inability to hit Ground-types.
