Wormadam Movesets & Competitive Sets

Moves Although other Grass-types get a similar movepool, Wormadam distinguishes itself with a Bug-type STAB move, which is mostly worse than Roselia's stronger Poison-type STAB but means Wormadam can beat Grumpig. Choice Specs-boosted Leaf Storm can hit fairly hard despite Wormadam's mediocre Special Attack, and Giga Drain does not cause Wormadam's Special Attack stat to drop by two stages. Lastly, Hidden Power Rock hits Fire- and Flying-types, meaning Ninetales and Jumpluff can set up on Wormadam only once with Nasty Plot and Swords Dance, respectively. Set Details Choice Specs not only gives the bagworm a snazzy look but also lets it do some decent damage when combined with maximum Special Attack investment and a Modest nature. The remaining EVs go into HP, as Wormadam cannot hope to outspeed most Pokemon, and at least it lets Wormadam take a hit from several Water-types such as Floatzel and Politoed. Usage Tips Click Leaf Storm 90% of the time, as that does decent damage. If you fear a Grass-type switching in, just go for a coverage move to hit the incoming Pokemon; otherwise, Giga Drain can be used to regain health. Wormadam might be able to switch into certain Water- and Grass-types, such as Floatzel and Tangela, but it might get blown back by a coverage move, so it should be careful. Wormadam might also be useful as death fodder late-game if one of its teammates needs a safe switch in. Also be careful as to which move Wormadam gets locked into, as it can be used as setup fodder. Team Options If you have gotten this far and still want to use Wormadam— please do not; use Tangela or Roselia instead. If you really have to use Wormadam, use it on teams that provide heavy paralysis support or on a Trick Room team. Wormadam also needs teammates to cover its weaknesses, though covering every one of them would be almost impossible, so just try to cover some. Wormadam should be supported by checks to Fire-types, such as Grumpig and Pelipper; checks to Flying-types, such as Probopass and Stunfisk; Pokemon that resist Ice, such as Probopass and Grumpig; and Pokemon that can take on Rock-types such as Lumineon and Gabite. Entry hazard removers such as Pelipper and Armaldo are also important, as Wormadam cannot afford to lose a quarter of its health. Yeah, it would be simpler just to not use this unloved worm.

Wormadam functions decently well on balanced teams, serving as a Water- and Grass-type check. Due to its low offensive stats, Toxic is Wormadam's most reliable source of damage. Protect can be used to rack up Leftovers recovery, stall for Toxic damage, and scout for super effective moves, or Synthesis can be used for more reliable recovery. Giga Drain hits the Water- and Ground-type Pokemon Wormadam walls super effectively while granting it some nifty recovery. Wormadam's niche over other specially defensive Grass-types is its STAB Signal Beam, which allows it to hit many more Pokemon, especially Grass- and Psychic-types, super effectively. A physically defensive spread is viable to better check Sawk and Golurk, but Wormadam's Rock- and Flying-type weaknesses leave it easily exploitable by many physical attackers. Hidden Power Rock is an option to hit the Fire- and Flying-types that can wall this set; Hidden Power Ground can hit the Steel- and Poison-types that do the same. Wormadam really appreciates Toxic Spikes support to speed up its walling process; Garbodor is the best option as it synergizes well with Wormadam, unlike Roselia. Rock-types such as Golurk and Regirock make great partners as they resist both of Wormadam's 4x weaknesses, Fire and Flying, and Wormadam can take most Fighting-, Ground-, Grass-, and Water-type attacks aimed at them. Steel-types such as Probopass also make good partners because they cover Wormadam's Ice-, Flying-, Bug-, and Poison-type weaknesses. Lastly, Choice Band Sawk, Taunt Misdreavus, and offensive Seismitoad can keep Stealth Rock off the field, drastically increasing Wormadam's longevity.

This set is Wormadam's best attempt at damaging opposing Pokemon in UU. Despite being outclassed by many other Grass-types, Wormadam still possesses a few tricks of its own. For one, it flaunts a secondary Bug typing that provides it with a resistance to popular Fighting-type attacks, as well as decent special bulk to help it tank neutral attacks effectively. All of this, combined with Wormadam's ever-useful Grass typing that helps it massacre Milotic and other Water-types, makes it a decent if not preferable choice. Leaf Storm is Wormadam's most powerful attack, capable of scoring OHKOs on many of the Water-types in UU, such as physically defensive Blastoise and Milotic. However, the Special Attack drop is extremely crippling to Wormadam. Psychic is a strong alternative against opponents resistant to Grass, such as Venusaur and Weezing. Signal Beam and Energy Ball provide reliable STAB attacks, forming the core of Wormadam's moveset. The choice of Hidden Power is a decision between being able to damage opposing Fire-types such as Arcanine or severely crippling Altaria while also hitting opposing Grass-types such as Leafeon for super effective damage. The EVs on this set are fairly straightforward. Maximum Special Attack and a Modest nature are required for Wormadam to damage things at all, while 200 Speed EVs allow Wormadam to outspeed Weezing and 2HKO it with Psychic before it 2HKOes Wormadam with Sludge Bomb. The rest of the EVs are placed into HP to increase Wormadam's bulk. Choice Specs is the recommended item on this set because Wormadam needs to hit as hard as it possibly can to be at all threatening. Although Life Orb gives Wormadam the freedom to switch moves, the power boost is not as great as Choice Specs. In addition, Wormadam needs to preserve its HP, especially given its crippling weakness to Stealth Rock. Wormadam requires quite a bit of team support to function efficiently. Dugtrio is a very effective teammate for it, as the mole easily traps and destroys Registeel, Arcanine, and Chansey, three Pokemon that give Wormadam a lot of trouble. Donphan is another great partner for Wormadam, as it can use Rapid Spin to remove troubling entry hazards, in addition to defeating Registeel and Arcanine handily.
