Analyse

Seadra is NFE's best check against Ground- and Fire-types like Piloswine and Pignite thanks to its physical bulk, typing, and great natural Speed. Grass-types like Servine and Thwackey looking to take back momentum will instead be put on the back foot with Flip Turn. Surf discourages physical walls like Koffing and Naclstack from making free progress against it, while also discouraging Piloswine and Pignite from firing away attacks. The combination of Rest and Sleep Talk makes Seadra a good status absorber, letting it continue its walling duties. Poison Point discourages physical attackers from freely spamming STAB moves, Knock Off, or U-turn, as well as punishing Quaxwell for using Rapid Spin. 16 Speed EVs allow Seadra to outrun Pignite. Seadra fits on bulky and balanced teams looking for a physical wall and pivot that punishes other physical attackers. Seadra despises Grass-types like Thwackey, Servine, and Ivysaur; Steel- and Poison-types like Hisuian Sliggoo and Koffing make for excellent partners. Special attackers like Girafarig, Duosion, and Frogadier can blast through Seadra's meager special bulk, so special walls like Tinkatuff and utility Dunsparce remain good answers to them. Dragon-types like Fraxure, Drakloak, and Hisuian Sliggoo can exploit Seadra's passivity, so checks to them like Piloswine and Tinkatuff can be helpful for answering them. Fletchinder and Hattrem can mitigate Seadra’s vulnerability to residual damage with Defog and Magic Bounce, respectively.

Analyse

Disable is Seadra's main niche, and Seadra has the power and Speed to pull off a SubDisable set. Switch into a Pokemon that Seadra forces out, set up a Substitute, and use Disable to play around the opponent's next switch-in. Seadra is very bulky on the physical side, allowing it to take hits from physical attackers, disable their main STAB move, and force them to use a weaker move that does not threaten it. Walls and bulky opponents fall to Seadra once their main attack is disabled, as their other moves usually lack the firepower to break its Substitutes. Disable can also prevent the opponent's wall from stalling Seadra out with recovery moves, as it isn't the strongest Pokemon and will most likely fail to 2HKO most of them. Hydro Pump is a powerful STAB attack that can easily dent an opponent or force it out, but Scald is a more reliable option. Scald is able to cripple physical offensive opponents with burns so that they will have even more trouble breaking Substitutes. It is also useful for wearing down bulkier offensive Pokemon such as Samurott, Ludicolo, and Gardevoir. Finally, Ice Beam is great for coverage against Grass- and Dragon-types, and has a decent Base Power. Poison Point is the better overall ability to wear down walls and physical attackers through the potential poison damage. Signal Beam can be used in place of Ice Beam to deal more damage to Exeggutor and Ludicolo. However, Ice Beam is preferred thanks to its higher Base Power and ability to hit Dragon-types super effectively. Surf can be used as it is more powerful than Scald, and has superior accuracy compared to Hydro Pump. A Disable + 3 attacks set can be used if the user prefers a more offensive set. However, Substitute is preferred thanks to its ability to block stray hits, stop status effects, and ease prediction. Hidden Power Grass can be used for coverage if you opt for a more offensive route. Good teammates for Seadra are those that can set up entry hazards to inflict more residual damage onto opponents, taking advantage of its ability to force switches with Substitute and Disable. Seadra needs Toxic Spikes to break through most walls, as Seadra can fail to break through some opponents. Roselia and Garbodor are great Spikes and Toxic Spikes users to support Seadra. They resist the Grass-type attacks that Seadra dislikes, can force Grass-types out, and absorb Toxic Spikes, which can cripple Seadra. Ground-types such as Golem are immune to Electric-type attacks which threaten Seadra and can help set up Stealth Rock for the team. Meanwhile, Seadra can take the Water-type attacks aimed at them. Clerics such as Audino are also recommended as teammates, as Seadra absolutely hates any form of status due to its lack of reliable recovery and reliance on its Speed, bulk, and HP to make Substitutes.

Analyse

This set is a good choice for hyper offense teams that can continually pummel the opponent without the need for setup. While Huntail is more powerful and faster in rain, Seadra does not need to rely on rain being active in order to outspeed a huge portion of the metagame and blast foes with its STAB move, making it a bit more reliable in that regard. The choice between Hydro Pump and Surf is the age-old story of power vs accuracy. Hydro Pump is generally preferred due to the chance to break through defensive stalwarts like Swalot and Lickitung; however, the tier is pretty specially frail on the whole, making Surf a decent option. Ice Beam and either Hidden Power Grass or Hidden Power Electric give Seadra almost perfect neutral coverage on the tier, which Seadra is thankful for because it really does not have a movepool outside of that, making the last slot somewhat of a filler option. Substitute is nice to protect Seadra from being revenge killed by the likes of Plusle and Haunter, and it can be used with a Petaya or Salac Berry to give Seadra an extra boost to possibly sweep the opposing team. Toxic is a great way to cripple the special walls that can tank its attacks well, particularly Kecleon and Bellossom. Finally, Agility can turn the tables on the opponent late-game and let Seadra outrun even Huntail in the rain. A Timid nature is needed to let Seadra outspeed Glalie and the rare Fire-types that sit near its Speed tier, like Charmeleon and Magby. Modest is still a choice though if you're looking for straight power and is recommended if you're using Hydro Pump. Speaking of power, Mystic Water can be used to give Seadra's Water-type STAB move a bit more bite and ensures a 2HKO on physically defensive Swalot with Hydro Pump and 2HKO on Choice Band Hitmonchan with Surf. Hidden Power Grass can be used over Hidden Power Electric to nail Whiscash, but Electric is generally better, as it provides better neutral coverage and has a more desirable super effective hit on Pelipper. Spikes is central to hyper offense teams, making Roselia, Glalie, and Cacturne required teammates, with Roselia in particular sporting great type synergy with Seadra. Bellossom is a huge threat to this set, as it is tanky enough to withstand Ice Beam and easily OHKOes Seadra with any of its STAB moves. Flying-types like Murkrow and Fire-types like Flareon are thus good offensive teammates to pair with Seadra, as they can take advantage of Bellossom and OHKO it, and in Flareon's case, enjoy a nice Sunny Day boost as well should Bellossom choose to set up. Plusle and Haunter are the main revenge killers to watch out for when using this set, making a special tank a recommended teammate; Chimecho is a good team choice, as it can continue to pressure the opponent with offensive Calm Mind sets. Finally, Hitmonchan is a great offensive partner to blow through a few of the special walls that stand in Seadra's way, while Seadra soaks the physical walls that give Hitmonchan some trouble.
