Analyse

Defensive Staryu is a reliable entry hazard remover and answer to opposing Water- and Ground-types. If teammates adequately handle Water-types, Thunder Wave can be run over Thunderbolt to cripple threats like opposing Staryu and Abra. 116 HP EVs let Staryu more reliably check threats such as Natu if Stealth Rock is up, as well as avoid the OHKO from Diglett's Final Gambit. Natural Cure gives Staryu a pseudo-immunity to status from foes like Frillish and from attacks like Scald and Sludge Bomb. This set removing Stealth Rock helps teammates like Ponyta. Larvesta in particular makes a fantastic teammate; it needs Stealth Rock off the field to be effective and is one of the best counters to Grass-types in the metagame, while Staryu can handle opposing Water-types. Koffing checks Grass-types and Mienfoo while benefiting from Staryu spinning and checking Ground-types. Natu works in tandem with Staryu to keep entry hazards off the field and can check Ferroseed, Foongus, and Grookey.

Analyse

Staryu is one of Little Cup's few viable offensive Water-types thanks to its high Speed, good coverage, and reliable recovery. Thunderbolt hits Water-types like Mareanie, Frillish, and opposing Staryu, as well as Natu, for super effective damage. Ice Beam hits opposing Grass-types and is Staryu's best option against Ferroseed, while Psychic instead hits opposing Mienfoo and Poison-types super effectively. This set can run Rapid Spin over one of its coverage attacks, letting Staryu support its teammates with entry hazard control or act as a cleaner. Analytic lets Staryu deal extra damage to switch-ins, most notably netting a 2HKO on Foongus, as well as Frillish after Stealth Rock. Offensive Staryu is a useful soft check to a wide range of foes, from passive special attackers like Natu and Mareanie to dangerous offensive threats like Mudbray and Ponyta. A reliable answer to bulky Grass-types like Ferroseed and Foongus is important for Staryu to be effective; Natu is a great teammate because it handles both of these threats. Ponyta has great offensive and defensive synergy with Staryu; it handles Grass-types, while Staryu takes care of Water-types and Onix. Trapinch can trap and remove Ferroseed. Fire-weak teammates like Ferroseed and Pawniard appreciate Staryu's ability to switch into opposing Ponyta. Poison-types like Koffing and Foongus can handle Grookey, while Staryu checks opposing Ground-types. If running Rapid Spin, Larvesta makes an ideal teammate, handling Grass-types and benefitting from Staryu keeping Stealth Rock off the field.

Analyse

Moves Hydro Pump is a very strong STAB attack. Psychic, Ice Beam, and Thunderbolt provide potent coverage against many Pokemon that resist Water, such as Mareanie and Snivy. Hidden Power Fire KOes Ferroseed that comes in against Staryu expecting to wall it. However, if your team desperately needs entry hazard removal, Staryu is strong enough to drop a coverage move and run Rapid Spin. Set Details The given EV spread maximizes Staryu's Speed and Special Attack so it can hit as hard and fast as possible. The leftover EVs are most useful in Defense to weaken various physical attacks such as Mienfoo's High Jump Kick and Timburr's Drain Punch. If Hidden Power Fire is used with an Eviolite, an EV spread of 36 HP / 200 SpA / 240 Spe should be used instead to account for lowered IVs; if Hidden Power Fire is used with a Life Orb, then the HP EVs should be ignored as well for an EV spread of 200 SpA / 240 Spe to maintain 19 HP and reduce Life Orb recoil. A Timid nature further raises Staryu's Speed, reaching the excellent 19 Speed tier. Running Analytic lets Staryu badly damage switch-ins. Eviolite gives Staryu more switch-in opportunities and lets it avoid more OHKOs, but holding a Life Orb make Staryu's damage output even more impressive, especially on forced switches from the opponent. Usage Tips Staryu is pretty frail when it isn't carrying Eviolite, so be cautious about switching it into anything but the weakest attacks out there. Staryu is really, really strong with Analytic, so bring it in on something it forces out like Ponyta and take a hefty chunk out of whatever switches in with Staryu's high-powered attacks! Be sure to weaken Pokemon with priority attacks such as Timburr and Pawniard, as they can circumvent Staryu's excellent Speed and threaten it with their STAB priority attacks. Team Options Staryu needs free switches onto the field in order to be effective. Pair it with a slow U-turn or Volt Switch user like Mienfoo or Magnemite for best effect. Very few things can switch into Staryu, and most of those are bulky Water-types like Slowpoke. Therefore, bringing a teammate such as Pawniard or Snivy is advised. Staryu appreciates Knock Off support from the likes of Mienfoo and Pawniard, as this allows it to break through defensive Pokemon more easily. Entry hazard support allows you to fully capitalize on the switches Staryu forces; combining Analytic-boosted attacks with entry hazard damage will take huge chunks of HP out of anything that tries to switch in. Good Pokemon for entry hazard support include Dwebble and Pawniard.

Analyse

Moves Rapid Spin removes entry hazards from Staryu's side of the field. Scald is a good STAB attack that carries a useful burn chance. Psychic allows Staryu to OHKO Gastly and helps against other Poison-type Pokemon such as Croagunk and Foongus. Alternatively, Ice Beam hits Pumpkaboo and other Grass-type Pokemon, but it is not able to 2HKO every variant of Pumpkaboo due to this set's decreased power. Thunderbolt allows Staryu to take on other bulky Water-type Pokemon, most notably Frillish and other Staryu. Recover helps Staryu stay around longer by restoring its HP. Set Details 236 Speed EVs and a Timid nature maximize Staryu's Speed, getting it to 19 Speed and making it more likely to get off a Rapid Spin. 156 HP EVs and 116 EVs in Defense give Staryu serviceable bulk and also increase the amount of HP it gains from Recover from 10 to 11. Eviolite further bolsters Staryu's bulk. Natural Cure allows Staryu to absorb status moves for its teammates; this is particularly useful for taking Will-O-Wisp burns from an opposing Ponyta or Larvesta. Usage Tips This Staryu set, while more passive than others, tends to be able to switch into and spin against more Pokemon. In addition, this variant of Staryu is capable of switching directly into Gastly thanks to its greater Speed, its ability to OHKO Gastly with Psychic, and the fact that Natural Cure can nullify any Sludge Bomb poison status. Don't be afraid to use Scald unless the opponent has a Pokemon immune to Water-type attacks; its chance to burn the foe makes Scald an incredible move! Team Options Any Pokemon that appreciates entry hazard removal finds a good partner in Staryu. Examples of these include Vullaby, Rufflet, and Salandit. This variant of Staryu in particular is perfect for defensive Fire / Water / Grass cores, as it synergizes especially well with Pokemon such as Foongus and Ponyta. In general, Staryu makes a good glue Pokemon for a lot of teams, as it has good synergy with most Grass- and Fairy-type Pokemon.

Moves Rapid Spin allows Staryu to remove entry hazards, such as Stealth Rock and Toxic Spikes, from its side of the field; this move is the biggest reason to use Staryu. Hydro Pump is Staryu's most powerful STAB attack, and it hits very hard after a boost from Analytic. The third moveslot is a choice between coverage moves; Ice Beam allows Staryu to put a sizable dent into any Pumpkaboo coming in to block Rapid Spin, and Psychic allows Staryu to threaten various important Poison- and Fighting-type Pokemon such as Croagunk, Timburr, and Mareanie. Thunderbolt allows Staryu to take on other bulky Water-type Pokemon, most notably Frillish and other Staryu. Lastly, Recover helps magnify Staryu's longevity by restoring its HP. Set Details 236 Speed EVs and a Timid nature maximize Staryu's already great Speed, allowing it to reach the excellent 19 Speed tier. Putting 116 EVs in Special Attack helps boost the power of Staryu's powerful Analytic-boosted attacks. Finally, 156 Defense EVs and Eviolite help bolster Staryu's bulk. Usage Tips Staryu's main job is to use Rapid Spin to remove entry hazards, so you should make a significant effort to do this whenever possible. If you opponent is packing a Pumpkaboo, however, it may be wise to try to hit it with Ice Beam as it switches in, as no Pumpkaboo can avoid a 2HKO from the attack due to Analytic. In general, Staryu makes for a good switch-in to most Fire-, Rock-, and Ground-type Pokemon, as it is usually faster than them and can threaten them with its Water-type STAB attacks. Additionally, Staryu's excellent Speed allows it to revenge KO many fast, frail Pokemon such as Doduo and Gastly. Team Options Any Pokemon that appreciates entry hazard removal finds a good partner in Staryu. Examples of these Pokemon include Doduo, Ponyta, and Snover. Staryu also tends to lure in Ghost-type Pokemon as they try to block Rapid Spin; therefore, Pokemon that can use Pursuit such as Pawniard and Alolan Grimer make excellent partners, as they can come in on predicted switches and trap said Ghost-type Pokemon. Additionally, Staryu is perfect for defensive Fire / Water / Grass cores, as it synergizes very well with Pokemon such as Foongus and Ponyta.

Analyse

Good Speed and access to Scald, Recover, and Rapid Spin combine to make Staryu the best entry hazard remover in the tier. Scald is a godsend to every defensive Water-type, doubling as an easy-to-spam attack that threatens otherwise good checks with a burn. Rapid Spin is a luxury in a tier with very few forms of hazard control and is the cornerstone of Staryu's niche. Recover is crucial to keeping Staryu able to remove entry hazards long-term, distinguishing it from every other spinner. The last moveslot is dedicated to making Staryu harder to exploit, as Scald on its own is somewhat easy to take advantage of. Toxic is the most common option, as Poison- and Steel-types do not want to risk a Scald burn. However, this leads to Staryu being wholly incapable of doing anything against Clefairy other than using Rapid Spin and switching out. Thunder Wave remedies this, applying another useful status that Pokemon immune to Electric are hesitant to counter due to the threat of Scald. Thunderbolt can be used on fully Defense-invested Staryu that would get outsped by Walrein and are susceptible to Substitute, but the damage to any Water-type other than opposing Staryu and Pelipper is paltry at best. Natural Cure allows Staryu to take a Will-O-Wisp or Toxic and cleanse it by switching out, improving its longevity greatly. This is particularly useful against the Rock- and Ground-types such as Solrock or Hippopotas that struggle to pressure Staryu with status, a trait that other spinners cannot replicate. A Timid nature and enough Speed to outrun a fully invested Solrock are used, as using Rapid Spin before Solrock can use Explosion is key against hyper offense teams. However, maximum Defense or Special Defense investment with the corresponding nature can be used to counter Rock-types or Pelipper better, respectively. Staryu is most commonly seen on defensive and balance teams that use staples crippled by Stealth Rock, such as Pelipper, Walrein, Emolga, and Simisear. These Pokemon are already excellent with Stealth Rock present, but they can be overwhelming with the entry hazard removal and status that Staryu provides. Even Pokemon not weak to Stealth Rock, such as Persian and Muk, can stick around seemingly forever with hazards cleared. Staryu's support can be excellent in preserving its teammates, but it needs partners that can facilitate it to consistently use Rapid Spin. Counters to Meganium and Clefairy are paramount, as Aromatherapy undoes any status Staryu applies and Clefairy is a foolproof wall. Muk, Leafeon, and Mienfoo are excellent long-term counters to the pair, which is accentuated by Staryu forcing them in and removing entry hazards. These three also appreciate Staryu's ability to pivot into passive walls, Solrock especially, from where it can reliably spread status or remove hazards. Staryu's utility can be unreliable against hyper offense teams that load up on multiple Pokemon that carry Lum Berry or take advantage of the turns that Staryu spends using Rapid Spin and Recover. Speedy Pokemon that are reliable against hyper offense such as Emolga, Persian, Choice Scarf Mienfoo, and Choice Scarf Grumpig can help revenge kill in return once Staryu is inevitably sacrificed. Staryu's bulk, even with Eviolite, is not particularly impressive. Grass-types with great natural bulk to take hits, especially from Electric- and Grass-type moves, are appreciated, such as Meganium, Leafeon, and Ivysaur.
