Grimer should switch in on Fighting-types, as it resists their STAB attacks and won't lose its item to Knock Off due to Sticky Hold, and then try hit hard with Gunk Shot or use its other moves when predicting certain Pokemon switching in. However, Grimer's low Speed and weaknesses to common types leave it vulnerable to being trapped by Diglett, making it hard to function. This leaves Grimer outclassed by Trubbish, as its greater Speed lets it perform Grimer's job more effectively, and it can set up Spikes or keep restoring its HP repeatedly with Recycle and Berry Juice.

Moves Gunk Shot is Grimer's most powerful attack, severely damaging anything that doesn't resist it. Fire Punch has very good coverage alongside Gunk Shot, mainly targeting Steel-types such as Pawniard, Magnemite, and Ferroseed. Shadow Sneak is helpful for bypassing Grimer's terrible Speed and makes picking off Pokemon such as Gastly easier. Thief can be used in the last moveslot to take a foe's item after Grimer's Berry Juice has been used. Pain Split can be used for the semi-reliable recovery it provides. Keep in mind, however, that Thief's coverage is nearly identical to that of Shadow Sneak. Set Details The given EVs and nature guarantee that Grimer can beat most Pawniard variants one-on-one, as it can never be 2HKOed by Pawniard's Knock Off and can always 2HKO with Fire Punch. An Adamant nature is also useful for the higher chance to OHKO Spritzee after Stealth Rock damage. Berry Juice is for recovery and greatly increases Grimer's longevity. Also, if Thief is used, Grimer can steal the foe's item after using its own Berry Juice. Usage Tips Grimer is best used as a check to Knock Off-spamming Pokemon such as Mienfoo, Pawniard, and Croagunk. However, Grimer cannot reliably check all forms of Pawniard, as Fire Punch does not always 2HKO Eviolite variants, therefore sometimes making it setup bait for Swords Dance Pawniard. Also, because Grimer is easily worn down due to its lack of recovery, try to use it sparingly. Team Options Lickitung makes a good partner for Grimer, as it can spread paralysis, which Grimer appreciates, and provides Wish support to help Grimer stick around for a bit longer. Lickitung can also check specially offensive Pokemon, mainly Psychic- and Ghost-types through its bulk and typing. In turn, Grimer can switch in on Fighting-type attacks aimed at Lickitung. Grimer appreciates Dark- and Flying-types such as Pawniard and Vullaby to switch in on Psychic- and Ground-type attacks, respectively. Finally, because Grimer often has a tough time taking on Ghost- and Psychic-types, Pursuit support from Pokemon such as Pawniard is appreciated.

Grimer can also attempt to sweep with a Curse set after Steel-types have been eliminated. Thanks to its solid defenses and access to a reliable STAB in Poison Jab, Grimer can effectively sweep late-game; even defensive Misdreavus is 2HKOed at +6. Curse allows it to boost its Attack and Defense while lowering its already-abysmal Speed. Poison Jab is a reliable STAB, whose secondary effect of poisoning can always be useful. Rest and Sleep Talk provide Grimer with a semi-reliable form of recovery, allowing it to stay healthy while it sets up. The EV spread maximizes Grimer's HP and Special Defense; the remaining EVs are placed in Defense. A Careful nature allows Grimer to take special hits even better, as its Defense will be increased anyway by Curse. Magnemite is a great partner, as it can trap annoying Steel-types that prevent Grimer from sweeping thanks to their immunity to Poison. Powerful attackers such as Life Orb Misdreavus and Drilbur can easily break through Grimer even after a boost; it is best to remove these threats before trying to set up. This set can also act as a pivot, switching into Fighting-types early-game and spreading poison, before using Curse and sweeping late-game.

This set puts all of Grimer's best traits into one single moveset: its bulk, its Attack stat, and its movepool. Poison Jab or Gunk Shot is the main STAB move on this set, being the classic "accuracy vs. power" dilemma. Gunk Shot can 2HKO even the bulkiest walls, such as Porygon and Lileep, with Stealth Rock and poison status, while every Fighting-type in the tier except Croagunk is 2HKOed without any residual damage. However, Poison Jab still nabs the 3HKO on all of the aforementioned threats, and has perfect accuracy to boot. Fire Punch hits Steel-types such as Pawniard, Bronzor, and Magnemite for good damage, while Shadow Sneak is a useful priority move, allowing Grimer to pick off Abra and weakened Misdreavus. Finally, Pain Split provides a form of recovery. The EV spread allows Grimer to maximize its Attack, while splitting the remaining EVs in its defenses, and an Impish nature allows Grimer to take physical hits better. Cranidos is a good partner, as Grimer can check the Fighting-types that can halt Cranidos' sweep. Grimer also forms a fine defensive core with Shroomish and Porygon, as it can take assaults from the Fighting-types that annoy this core, while Shroomish takes the Ground-type hits that would KO Grimer otherwise.

This set utilizes Grimer's great Attack stat to deal huge amounts of damage to the opposing Pokemon. Gunk Shot is Grimer's main STAB move, and despite having poor coverage and accuracy, provides raw power. Poison Jab is a good alternative if you want a more reliable STAB option; however, the drop in power is very noticeable. Shadow Sneak provides Grimer with priority, and allows it to pick off weakened Pokemon. Fire Punch aids Grimer in dealing with Steel-type Pokemon that wall the rest of the set, while Ice Punch lets Grimer nail Gligar on the switch. If Grimer has Poison Jab instead of Gunk Shot in the first slot, Ice Punch also provides a strong, reliable answer to Dratini, but otherwise it is unnecessary for that purpose, as a neutral Gunk Shot packs more power than a super effective Ice Punch. Finally, Explosion allows Grimer to go out with a bang, dealing huge amounts of damage even to Pokemon that resist it. As any choice of move in the third moveslot leaves Grimer vulnerable to certain Pokemon, partnering it with a solid counter to those Pokemon greatly benefits Grimer. If Ice Punch is used, Steel-types completely wall this set; therefore, Choice Scarf Magnemite makes a good teammate, trapping them via Magnet Pull and taking them out with a STAB Thunderbolt. If Fire Punch is used, there are no Pokemon that resist all of Grimer's attacks, but Gligar can easily come in and set up a Swords Dance without fear. Pairing Grimer with Choice Scarf Snover can remedy this, as it can take down Gligar with Blizzard, while taking little damage from Earthquake. Oran Berry can be used in lieu of Life Orb to restore Grimer's health, but the extra power will be sorely missed. Choice Scarf Magnemite is a great teammate if Grimer lacks Fire Punch, beating all Steel-types who would wall this set otherwise. A Pokemon that can counter Gligar is helpful. Bronzor would do well in this case, being immune to Earthquake and able to shrug off all of Gligar's auxiliary moves reasonably well. Bronzor can then retaliate with Hidden Power Ice. Bronzor also beats most Ground-types that hit Grimer hard.

Grimer's good bulk, combined with its access to Curse, lets it turn both prominent special attackers, such as Elekid and Staryu, and walls, such as Delcatty and Lileep, into setup fodder. Rest allows Grimer to avoid being worn down, while Sleep Talk prevents Grimer from being passive while it's asleep. Maximum investment into Grimer's special bulk allows it to sponge special hits as effectively as possible, complimenting Curse's Defense boost. Grimer best fits on teams looking for a win con that can also function as a special wall against threats such as Elekid and Cyndaquil. Grimer traditionally sees itself used on balance and bulky offense teams, though Rain offense can also make use of its high special bulk and ability to pick off weakened foes. Grimer is incapable of making any meaningful progress against Magnemite, Rhyhorn, and Aron, and thus checks to them are essential for it to function. The former can be handled by special tanks and walls, such as Chinchou or bulky variants of Castform, who have the added benefit of acting as a substitute special wall if Grimer is forced out while asleep. Rhyhorn and Aron, on the other hand, can usually be checked by Water- and Grass-types such as Staryu and Bayleef. Koffing is another notable partner, as while it and Grimer share the same typing, Koffing completely walls Rhyhorn and Aron, neutering 2 of Grimer's worst matchups, while in return, Grimer handles special attackers that give Koffing trouble. Delcatty is another partner that deserves a special mention, as it can use Wish and Heal Bell to keep Grimer healthy, but its cleric sets also struggle to touch the same Pokemon Grimer struggles with. Finally, Rock- and Steel-types such as Lileep and Magnemite make good partners due to their ability to check powerful Normal-type attackers such as Aipom and Taillow, who can usually overwhelm Grimer before it can set up.
