Moves Boomburst is an absurdly powerful STAB move for Chatot with virtually no downsides. Even frailer Pokemon that resist Boomburst, such as Pawniard and Mawile, are 2HKOed by it. Heat Wave provides coverage against bulkier Steel-types, such as Klinklang and Ferroseed, as well as Gourgeist-S and Gourgeist-XL. Hidden Power Grass is Chatot's only option for scoring a 2HKO on Tank Rhydon. U-turn maintains momentum if you haven't properly whittled down Chatot's safe switch-ins. Chatter can be very disruptive because of its guaranteed confusion rate, but it should be noted that a super effective Chatter is weaker than a neutral Boomburst. Set Details Running maximum Special Attack investment is a given to ensure all of Chatot's attacks do as much damage as possible. Maximum Speed investment with a Timid nature allows Chatot to outspeed the likes of Lilligant, Zangoose, and other offensive Pokemon with a base Speed of up to 90. Choice Specs maximizes Chatot's Special Attack to ensure its coverage attacks and, more importantly, Boomburst hit as hard as possible. Chatot's abilities are mostly worthless, but Tangled Feet can give it a lucky break for a turn against opposing Chatot with Chatter. Usage Tips Boomburst is usually the safest option for Chatot to use because of the ridiculous amount of damage it does even on resisted hits. However, if your opponent has a very solid Boomburst switch-in, Chatot can use U-turn to gain momentum on the switch. Chatot is quite frail, so be careful about letting it take Stealth Rock damage because it might push it into the KO range of a priority attack from the likes of Hitmonchan, Shiftry, and Kabutops. Chatot should not switch into most attacks, but it can capitalize on Choice-locked Ghost- and Ground-type attacks, such as Rotom's Shadow Ball and Torterra's Earthquake. Because of how frail Chatot is, teammates with slow momentum-gaining moves, such as Lanturn with Volt Switch and Mesprit with U-turn, are useful assets for bringing it in safely. Team Options Entry hazard support in the form of Stealth Rock and Spikes goes a long way for Chatot because its common switch-ins rarely have reliable recovery. Garbodor and Ferroseed make especially great partners for Chatot because of their ability to both set up Spikes and punish priority users, which are used to revenge kill Chatot, thanks to Rocky Helmet and Iron Barbs damage, respectively. Rapid Spin or Defog support from the likes of Hitmonchan and Skuntank is appreciated because of Chatot's weakness to Stealth Rock. Special Defog Skuntank is a worthy mention because of its ability to lure in Steel-types and Rhydon and surprise them with Fire Blast and Hidden Power Grass. Bulky Ground-types, such as Claydol and Sandslash, are great switch-ins for the difficult Rock-types that hard wall Chatot, not to mention Claydol's and Sandslash's ability to provide Rapid Spin support. Teammates that have slow momentum-gaining moves, such as Lanturn with Volt Switch and Xatu with U-turn form tight VoltTurn cores with Chatot. Expert Belt Rotom-S is a notable partner because of its access to Volt Switch and ability to lure Rhydon, a common check to Choice Specs Chatot, and heavily damage it with Hidden Power Grass. Pursuit support from the likes of Skuntank and Liepard can trap Ghost-types so Chatot can comfortably use Boomburst. Late-game cleaners that share similar switch-ins to Chatot, such as Archeops, Tauros, and Swellow, appreciate the extra damage on the aforementioned switch-ins.

Moves Nasty Plot boosts Chatot's Special Attack to terrifying levels. Substitute can provide a safety net for Chatot so it can safely fire off an attack of its own or set up with Nasty Plot. Additionally, it is a good option for punishing Sucker Punch users. Boomburst is insanely powerful when it's backed by a Nasty Plot boost. Chatter disrupts the opponent by inflicting damage and causing confusion, and it is Chatot's best way to handle Ghost-types, which don't fear Boomburst. Heat Wave can be used to hit Steel-types, such as Klinklang and Ferroseed, which resist Boomburst. Set Details Maximum Special Attack investment is preferred because Chatot wants to hit as hard as it can. Maximum Speed investment with a Timid nature ensures Chatot does not miss out on the benefits of its great Speed tier, such as outspeeding Mesprit and Lilligant. Leftovers helps recover a bit of the health lost from Substitute and Stealth Rock damage. Tangled Feet is mostly worthless, but it can come into play against opposing Chatot with Chatter. Usage Tips Even without a boosting item, Chatot can create offensive pressure thanks to Boomburst, allowing it to set up a Substitute. Don't be overly aggressive by letting Chatot take a hit to set up a Nasty Plot or Substitute, as it shouldn't be taking any hits it doesn't need to due to its frailty. Chatter can punish switch-ins to Boomburst, such as Mismagius and Rhydon, by inflicting confusion. Chatot can use the free turns confusion can generate to set up with Substitute or Nasty Plot. Chatot appreciates being brought in with slow, momentum-gaining moves, such as Volt Switch from Lanturn and U-turn from Pelipper. Team Options Bulky Ground-types, such as Claydol, Sandslash, and Torterra, switch into the Rock-types that handle Chatot so well. These Pokemon also provide an immunity to Electric-type attacks, which give Chatot trouble. Claydol and Sandslash can also provide Rapid Spin support to keep Stealth Rock off the field. Pursuit support from the likes of Skuntank and Liepard is helpful to trap the Ghost-types that can switch in safely on Boomburst. Rapid Spin or Defog from the likes of Skuntank and Hitmonchan can keep Stealth Rock off the field for Chatot. Special Defog Skuntank can also lure Rock- and Steel-types for Chatot and hit them with Hidden Power Grass and Fire Blast. Offensive Flying- and Normal-types, such as Archeops and Kangaskhan, whittle down shared switch-ins to Chatot, such as Rhydon and Regirock.

This is the only set Chatot can use without being outclassed by its Flying-type brethren. With a nice Speed stat, access to U-turn, and a somewhat decent movepool, Chatot makes for a good attacker. Hyper Voice is Chatot's main STAB move, and with a Choice Specs equipped, it can hit pretty hard; for example, it is capable of 2HKOing threats such as Eelektross. Heat Wave is Chatot's move of choice against the likes of Metang, which is 2HKOed by it, as well as Ghost-types, which can take the other moves on this set easily. U-turn lets Chatot escape switch-ins that wall it cold and force them out with the appropriate Pokemon and helps maintain momentum. Hidden Power Ground is used exclusively for Probopass and Bastiodon and 2HKOes them. A Timid nature lets Chatot outrun 90 base Speed Pokemon and below, such as Kangaskhan and Zangoose. For alternative moves, Hidden Power Grass hits Golem, Seismitoad, and Carracosta harder, but Hidden Power Ground suffices against Golem and Carracosta and Hyper Voice has a good chance to 2HKO Seismitoad. Pokemon that appreciate Chatot's ability to weaken Steel-types, such as Arbok and Substitute + Bulk Up Braviary, make for fine partners. Choice Band Sawk is a great partner as well, as it can OHKO most Stealth Rock setters. Probopass and Eelektross form a decent VoltTurn core with Chatot, making them good options for partners as well. Skuntank is another good partner as it can trap Misdreavus; in return, Chatot can weaken Steel-types that are annoying for Skuntank to handle. Chatot can grant it a free switch by using U-turn as well.

A Choice set allows Chatot to take advantage of its nice offensive stats without needing to set up. Choice Specs boosts Chatot's decent Special Attack stat to an excellent 424, whereas a Choice Scarf makes it faster than any unboosted Pokemon in UU. Hyper Voice is Chatot's most powerful STAB move and has great neutral coverage. Heat Wave fries the Steel- and Ghost-types that resist Hyper Voice, while Hidden Power Grass rounds out the coverage by hitting Rock-types hard. In the last slot, U-turn is always a useful move on a Choice set to scout for counters and maintain momentum, although it won't be doing much damage off Chatot's pathetic Attack stat. If U-turn doesn't appeal to you, Chatot's signature move, Chatter, is also an option; although its low Base Power is disappointing, it hits Fighting-types harder than Chatot's other moves and packs a handy 31% confusion rate. With Choice Specs, a Timid nature is essential in order to outspeed the abundant threats between base 80 and 90 Speed. Modest becomes more viable when using a Choice Scarf, but even then Timid is still recommended to beat other Choice Scarf Pokemon. Rapid Spin support is critical for this set, as Chatot will want to switch in and out several times during the match; if Stealth Rock is up, it will greatly limit Chatot's freedom to do so. Hitmontop and Donphan are both reliable spinners that can defeat Ghost-type spinblockers, removing both Stealth Rock and the Pokemon that are immune to Hyper Voice. Donphan can also set up its own Stealth Rock, which Chatot greatly appreciates due to this set's lack of power.

Chatot may not look like much of a threat, but if it manages to obtain a Nasty Plot boost, it will be dishing out some serious damage. A boosted STAB Hyper Voice will OHKO most offensive Pokemon, including Life Orb Venusaur and Arcanine, while 2HKOing even special walls such as Milotic and Clefable. Heat Wave provides solid coverage, hitting most of the Ghost- and Steel-types that resist Hyper Voice for at least a 2HKO after a boost. Encore is recommended in the last slot to help Chatot set up, as the frail bird will otherwise have difficulty finding an opportunity to use Nasty Plot. Hidden Power Grass is an alternative to hit Rock-types such as Rhyperior, Kabutops, and Omastar for 4x super effective damage, but it's usually unnecessary, as all three are 2HKOed by boosted Hyper Voice anyway. The EVs are standard for a special sweeper, maximizing Chatot's offensive potential. A Timid nature is absolutely required, as Chatot simply cannot afford to take a hit; without the extra Speed, Chatot will be outsped and easily OHKOed by positive-natured base 80s such as Venusaur and Blaziken. Since Chatot is so frail, any Pokemon with higher Speed or a powerful priority attack can switch in as Chatot boosts and KO it immediately afterward. Therefore, it is essential that such Pokemon are taken care of before Chatot attempts to sweep. Dugtrio can trap and KO opposing sweepers, as well as the Steel- and Rock-types that resist Hyper Voice. Spiritomb and Drapion can use Pursuit to eliminate Alakazam, Mismagius, and Rotom. Many of UU's fastest Pokemon are weak to Stealth Rock, so simply setting it up will prevent them from repeatedly switching in on Chatot. Plenty of Pokemon have access to Stealth Rock, but Omastar is perhaps the best option; not only does it have access to multiple types of entry hazards, but it also lures in Ground-type attacks that Chatot can switch in on and Encore for a free turn.
