Explosion is one of the few ways Genesect can take down Ho-Oh without relying on Stealth Rock and is strong enough to have a chance to OHKO Mild Primal Groudon after Stealth Rock damage and, with an Attack boost from Download, can even outright remove a defensive variant. Choice Band-boosted Explosion with the appropriate Download boost can also outright OHKO maximum HP support Arceus formes. Set Details The given EV spread is optimal for Genesect's role, maximizing its damage output and Speed as a physical pivot holding a Choice Band. Genesect using Extreme Speed is only legal with a Hasty nature and Shiny forme. While this hinders Genesect's ability to check Extreme Killer Arceus, it makes Genesect faster than maximum Speed base 90 Pokemon and neutral-natured base 99 Speed Pokemon like Xerneas and Yveltal with maximum Speed investment. Download gives Genesect a boost in Attack or Special Attack depending on the foe's defensive stats when Genesect switches in. Choice Band gives Genesect a needed reinforcement in damage output, and it allows Genesect to do formidable damage when combined with Download. Usage Tips Genesect struggles to switch into most offensive foes despite its good defensive typing. At best, it can pivot into attacks from Choice Scarf Xerneas lacking Hidden Power Fire and resisted Judgment from Arceus formes once or twice; however, even a small amount of prior damage will make it fall to +2 Moonblast from Geomancy Xerneas. This means Genesect has to choose between relying on almost always switching in unharmed to take on Xerneas lacking coverage to hit Steel-types or focus more on functioning as a pivot while getting slowly worn down. Though Genesect will mostly use U-turn to generate momentum and prevent many Pokemon it invites in from easily taking advantage of it, it will have to resort locking itself into different moves depending on the situation. Iron Head can be used to threaten Fairy-types and pressure slower teams, as it does decent damage with Choice Band and an Attack boost from Download. Weakened setup sweepers should be taken out with Extreme Speed, and it can also be used to score a possible KO on defensive Ho-Oh after Stealth Rock. If Genesect is in a horrendous matchup, has to lure and remove Ho-Oh or a support Arceus forme, or has to revenge kill slower, healthy foes, such as Swords Dance-boosted Primal Groudon and Extreme Killer Arceus, using Explosion will be a worthwhile decision, though it is possible that a Ghost- or Steel-type Pokemon may pivot into Genesect with an intent to take a weak hit from its other moves. Think twice before attempting to send Genesect in against offensive teams to revenge kill a foe with Extreme Speed. Though Extreme Speed may be powerful enough to take out frail sweepers, it may lack sufficient power to land a KO without Download boosting Genesect's Attack. Genesect locked into Extreme Speed is also very exploitable, as it invites threats like Necrozma-DM and Marshadow to take advantage of it, while bulkier setup sweepers like Primal Groudon and Zygarde can set up on it as well. Mega Gengar is another concerning foe when Genesect is about to lock itself into Extreme Speed, as Mega Gengar's Shadow Tag and immunity to Extreme Speed means Genesect will be hopelessly trapped. Team Options A good number of Pokemon massively benefit from Genesect's ability to create ideal matchups. Primal Kyogre can gain an opportunity to safely switch in through Genesect's U-turn and threaten Primal Groudon, Ho-Oh, or a physically defensive foe. Primal Groudon, Ho-Oh, and Arceus-Ground can be pivoted into Steel-types switching into Genesect. Primal Groudon also provides Genesect's team with more security against Xerneas by being a reliable check, provides Stealth Rock support to keep Ho-Oh at bay, manages problematic Steel-types, and defeats physically defensive foes with Overheat or Swords Dance-boosted attacks without forcing Genesect to use Explosion to bypass them. In return, Genesect can switch into Toxic for Primal Groudon. Various support Arceus formes can justify running Stealth Rock to prevent Ho-Oh from liberally switching into Genesect, provide a good defensive presence to check dangerous foes in the event where Genesect locks itself into a poor move, and benefit from Genesect drawing in and removing Ho-Oh with Explosion if they can't pressure Ho-Oh carrying Defog. Should they be in a bad matchup against an opposing support Arceus forme, Genesect can switch into Toxic and threaten to 2HKO the foe using Iron Head with the appropriate Download boost or net a surprise KO with Explosion. Mega Salamence and defensive Zygarde check to Primal Groudon and Ho-Oh. Mega Salamence can benefit from the pressure that Genesect applies on Fairy-types and certain Steel-types, and defensive Zygarde can spread paralysis with Glare to make up for Genesect's average Speed. Defog users like Giratina-O and Ho-Oh can prevent Genesect from getting worn down by entry hazards and threaten certain Primal Groudon variants, and Genesect can create a favorable matchup for them to freely spread status or attack by pivoting into them with U-turn.

It is important to remember that Genesect is 2HKOed by some of the threats it is meant to check, such as Landorus-T, Mega Salamence, and Tapu Lele. Team Options Pokemon that can take advantage of Genesect's pivoting capabilities make for good partners, such as Mega Salamence and Heatran. Mega Salamence and Heatran can set up a Dragon Dance and Substitute, respectively, on the Steel- and Fire-types that Genesect typically lures in. Other good partners are Dragon- and Fighting-types that appreciate Genesect's ability to check Fairy- and Psychic-types like Deoxys-A and Tapu Lele. In return, Dragon-types can resist Fire-type attacks and Fighting-types can greatly weaken Steel-types to help Genesect. Genesect's most important trait is its high Speed with a Choice Scarf equipped, so Pokemon that can shut down opposing speed control pair well with it. This includes Taunt users, such as Tapu Lele, Gyarados, and Tapu Koko. Genesect also appreciates speed control from its own team in the form of Icy Wind, Tailwind, or Thunder Wave. Solid Trick Room checks are also necessary, as Genesect's high Speed and low bulk make it particularly vulnerable to Trick Room. As Genesect usually lures in Fire-types, it appreciates partners that are capable of taking advantage of them; examples include Volcanion, Hydreigon, Terrakion, and Landorus-T.

Moves U-turn allows Genesect to be an effective pivot, dealing considerable damage while generating momentum. It can hit neutral foes surprisingly hard, especially after a Download boost. Set Details Assault Vest doesn't restrict Genesect to one move like Choice items do and also provides a useful bonus to its Special Defense, which makes it a better switch-in to Kyurem-B, Tapu Lele, and Deoxys-A. Alternatively, Genesect can use a Wiki Berry for a boost of health; with the amount of pivoting it tends to do, it's common to have Genesect chipped into low health, especially factoring Stealth Rock damage. The Speed investment alongside a Hasty nature lets Genesect get the jump on Tapu Lele and Kyurem-B, while the Special Attack EVs let it 2HKO Mega Metagross with Flamethrower regardless of its Download boost. The rest of the EVs are allocated to its Attack stat to maximize U-turn and Iron Head damage. A Hasty nature is preferred to boost Speed, as Genesect can't afford to lower any other of its stats. A bulkier EV spread of 136 HP / 112 Atk / 36 SpD / 224 Spe with the same nature keeps the same Speed benchmark while maintaining enough Attack to OHKO Tapu Lele without a Download boost and achieving enough special bulk to avoid an OHKO from Kingdra's Hydro Pump-based Hydro Vortex in rain. Alternatively, Genesect could use a Naive nature with 72 HP and 4 Defense EVs to ensure its survival of Kartana's All-out Pummeling. Download gives Genesect boosts to either attacking stat, letting it step up its damage output considerably. Usage Tips Thanks to the added bulk provided by Assault Vest, Genesect can withstand some hits from Kyurem-B and Tapu Lele and offensively check them. That doesn't mean you should be reckless while using it; if it is your only method of dealing with faster threats like Deoxys-A, Genesect should be kept healthy to check them. It's usually ideal to hit foes with super effective moves, regardless of the boost granted by Download. If Genesect packs Electroweb, keep in mind it shouldn't really be used for damage, but rather for the Speed drop. Team Options Genesect can force Fire-types to come in, so the likes of Volcanion, Zygarde, and Tyranitar pair well with it to take advantage of them. Physical attackers appreciate the fact that they can come in via Genesect's U-turn, as the opponent's Intimidate user would likely already be on field to neutralize Genesect before it pivots into them. Methods of speed control are appreciated to make up for Genesect's only decent Speed. Tailwind from the likes of Zapdos and Suicune is an excellent method of doing so, but Icy Wind users such as Tapu Fini and Kyurem-B are also noteworthy. Finally, countermeasures against Trick Room are quite important considering how vulnerable Genesect is to it. The aforementioned Suicune can phaze Trick Room setters with Roar, whereas Taunt users like Tapu Koko and Fake Out users such as Incineroar also stand out.

Moves A strong U-turn is one of Genesect's defining traits, being able to apply offensive pressure and gain momentum at the same time. Iron Head serves as Genesect's secondary STAB option, being able to revenge kill Mega Diancie and some Xerneas variants. Ice Beam is the primary method for Genesect to do damage to Primal Groudon (after a Download boost); it is also able to revenge kill a boosted Rayquaza and is a nice option against other Ground-types and Dragon-types. If the team requires some form of priority, Extreme Speed is very useful against Geomancy Xerneas and other sweepers that are naturally faster than Genesect, and it can have slight cleaning potential after a Download boost. Blaze Kick can be opted for if Steel-types such as Ferrothorn and Klefki present a problem for the team, but it has the drawback of making Genesect become massive Primal Groudon bait if Ice Beam is removed. Set Details A Naive nature is preferred on Genesect in order to sponge priority attacks better, but Hasty is required on sets with Extreme Speed or Blaze Kick due to legality issues. The above spread allows Genesect to hit hard physically with U-turn while giving its Special Attack an extra point after a Download boost. If you want more offense or bulk on Genesect, a spread of either 252 Atk / 72 SpA / 184 Spe or 72 HP / 248 Atk / 8 SpA / 184 Spe with a Hasty or Naive nature can outspeed all Choice Scarf base 90 Speed Pokemon while having the option of hitting harder with Ice Beam or taking hits from priority such as Extreme Speed better. Usage Tips Due to the relative freedom of being able to spam U-turn, this is usually a player's go-to option in favorable matchups or against one of Genesect's checks and counters, so try to utilize as much momentum as possible and think smart when switching to specific Pokemon. Though Genesect does have coverage options, it is primarily a revenge killer, so either pick off threats with the appropriate coverage move or U-turn to a different Pokemon to capitalize on momentum. Genesect can also function well as a lead against specific Pokemon, as U-turn can hurt some leads well enough to limit them to one layer of entry hazards by letting Genesect switch to a Pokemon that can revenge kill it with priority or a coverage move. Using Genesect as a Geomancy Xerneas switch-in is not recommended due to Genesect's subpar bulk, so be careful against those variants unless it either has not boosted or is at low enough HP for Genesect to pick it off with a Download-boosted Extreme Speed. Team Options Entry hazard support is very useful for Genesect to utilize offensive pressure with U-turn, so entry hazard setters such as Primal Groudon, Klefki, Dialga, and Forretress are very solid teammates. Offensive users of Rapid Spin or Defog such as Forretress, Latios, Latias, and Giratina-O can also assist Genesect by minimizing the residual damage it takes from entry hazards. Zekrom forms a very solid VoltTurn core with Genesect and is able to soft check Ho-Oh, though you should be wary of Primal Groudon when using this core. Wallbreakers and sweepers love having the multiple opportunities to switch in that Genesect can provide, so pairing Genesect with offensive threats such as Extreme Killer Arceus, Xerneas, Mega Salamence, and Rayquaza is extremely beneficial. Despite the archetype being somewhat inefficient due to the prevalence in entry hazard removal, Genesect functions well in Sticky Web teams, as it can pressure Latios and Latias while keeping hazards up with Explosion, so setters of Sticky Web such as Smeargle can work great with Genesect.

Moves U-turn is Genesect's main STAB move, and it also allows Genesect to switch out from a foe that checks it to an appropriate partner. Iron Head is Genesect's secondary STAB move and is more spammable as well, if you have some momentum to spare. It also has a nifty chance to cause the target to flinch, and without this move Genesect pretty much can't do anything to Fairy-types. Ice Beam helps Genesect take on foes such as Landorus-T, which Genesect is dead weight against otherwise. Explosion is another option for Genesect, as it allows it to pull off a last-ditch effort once it's weakened enough to the point where it can't do much back to the opposing team. Flamethrower is another option that gives Genesect coverage against a wide range of foes, namely Steel-types such as Aegislash, Ferrothorn, and Metagross. Set Details 192 Speed EVs with a Naive nature allow Genesect to outspeed threats such as Jolly Landorus-T equipped with Choice Scarf and Naive Deoxys-A. The Attack EVs maximize Genesect's physical damage output, allowing its STAB moves to deal as much damage as possible. The leftover EVs are dumped into Special Attack to increase Genesect's special offense. A Naive nature is used over Hasty to prevent Genesect from being more susceptible to priority moves than it already is. Usage Tips Genesect is a good choice in the early-game, as it can utilize its powerful U-turn to switch into the Pokemon appropriate for the situation, quickly putting your opponent on the defensive. However, Genesect should play carefully around Protect, the most common move in the metagame, as its poor defenses prevent it from taking hits well and even neutral damage will quickly shorten its lifespan. Another thing to remember is that Genesect should not be used as a sweeper, but rather as a means of putting holes into your opponent's team and gathering offensive momentum. That being said, Genesect is also capable of being a revenge killer thanks to its high Speed and offenses. Team Options Genesect has a rough time dealing with opposing speed control, so Pokemon that can prevent the use of Trick Room, Thunder Wave, and Tailwind are viable teammates. This includes Taunt users such as Gyarados, Thundurus, and Terrakion. Pokemon that can handle Fire-types are exceptional teammates for Genesect. This includes Water-types such as Rotom-W, Keldeo, and Gyarados. Rock-types such as Terrakion and Mega Diancie can also check Fire-types. Garchomp is a solid option, because it beats common Fire-types such as Heatran, Mega Charizard Y, and Talonflame while Genesect deals with Garchomp's checks such as Diancie, Latios, Kyurem-B, Choice Scarf Hydreigon, and Landorus-T. Genesect also fears opposing Water-types because they can force it out, as it really wouldn't like burned by Scald. Dragon-types do an excellent job of dealing with Water-types because they don't mind switching in on them, and Genesect can help them in return by dealing with Fairy-types, Landorus-T, and even Steel-types. Pokemon that take advantage of Genesect's momentum are good teammates, especially those that capitalize on the Fire-types that Genesect lures in. Pokemon that can take advantage of Genesect's momentum and its ability to lure in Fire-types, such as Calm Mind Cresselia, Substitute attackers such as Kyurem B and Heatran, and even Belly Drum Azumarill, are great teammates. If you're using Explosion on Genesect, using a Ghost-type partner such as Gengar is a good idea, as it gives you something to switch in while Genesect is going for Explosion so none of your Pokemon get caught in the crossfire.

Genesect's good Special Attack, solid Bug / Steel typing, and unique interaction with Burn Drive make it a decent option for a Wonder Guard Shell Smash sweeper. Techno Blast and Burn Drive allow Genesect to both Imposter-proof itself and OHKO opposing Bug / Steel Wonder Guard users. Additionally, Burn Drive grants Genesect an immunity to Trick without sacrificing its ability to beat Imposter users—a property that only Fist Plate Arceus shares among Wonder Guard Shell Smash sweepers. The remaining two moveslots are devoted to coverage moves to hit as many Wonder Guard users as possible. Flash Cannon is a decently powerful Steel-type STAB that hits Xerneas, Mega Audino, and Mega Gardevoir. Earth Power hits Mega Manectric and Mega Lucario, in addition to OHKOing Primal Groudon at +2. Secret Sword hits Normal-type Wonder Guard users like Slaking and Blissey. Freeze-Dry hits Water-type Wonder Guard users like Primal Kyogre and Gyarados, as well as 2HKOes standard Giratina at +2. Grass Knot similarly hits Water-type Wonder Guard users, excluding Gyarados, but its situationally higher Base Power improves its matchup versus foes like Whirlwind Kyogre. Moonblast has good neutral coverage and at +2 OHKOes Wonder Guard Mega Sableye and Mega Mewtwo X and 2HKOes Giratina. Alternatively, Genesect can make use of Gastro Acid to break through any Wonder Guard user that can't immediately KO it or force it out with Whirlwind. However, Gastro Acid essentially restricts Genesect's final coverage option to either Freeze-Dry or Moonblast, else it is unable to break through Prankster Giratina. Genesect fits best on balance and offense teams as a late-game wincon. Offensive Shadow Tag users like Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y make excellent teammates for their ability to trap and KO opposing Wonder Guard users that frequently forgo Shed Shell, such as Xerneas, Mega Gardevoir, and Mega Manectric. Choice item Mold Breaker users like Primal Groudon and Mega Rayquaza also make excellent teammates for their ability to blow holes in opposing Wonder Guard cores. In particular, Choice Band Primal Groudon is notable for its ability to essentially delete the majority of opposing Wonder Guard users with its STAB V-create. No Guard users such as Mega Mewtwo Y and Mega Aerodactyl are helpful teammates, (comma) as they provide Genesect with an abundance of free turns to use Shell Smash, in addition to forcing out Prankster Giratina. Similarly, Huge Power Pursuit users are valuable teammates for their ability to Pursuit trap Prankster Giratina, as well as the Choice item Shadow Tag users that like to switch into Genesect. Refrigerate and Pixilate users like Mega Abomasnow and Mega Diancie are likewise noteworthy teammates for their ability to force out Giratina with their powerful Boomburst. In particular, Mega Abomasnow is notable for its ability to revenge kill many variants of Primal Groudon, which most Genesect sets struggle against even while boosted. Furthermore, -ate Speed users make excellent entry hazard setters, and Genesect appreciates entry hazard support to turn some of its favorable rolls, such as +2 Grass Knot versus physically defensive Kyogre, into guaranteed KOs, improving its overall effectiveness as a wincon. Finally, Aromatherapy, Defog, and Wish support from defensive Wonder Guard teammates is greatly appreciated to offset any chip damage or status conditions Genesect might acquire during a game, easing its job as a late-game cleaner.

Moves U-turn should be Genesect's go-to move and can OHKO some of the frailer Pokemon it hits for neutral damage and takes a good chunk of HP out of Pokemon that resist it. Extreme Speed deals a large amount to any Pokemon bar Steel- and Rock-types, letting Genesect clean up weakened foes. The main advantage it has over any Refrigerate- or Pixilate-boosted Extreme Speed is that this Extreme Speed isn't resisted by Fire- and Water-types, although it loses the ability to revenge kill Gengar. Iron Head 2HKOes any Rock-types that may want to switch in on the predicted Extreme Speed. There are a few options for the last slot. Blaze Kick punishes non-Flash Fire variants of Skarmory or Doublade that are switching in on any of the other moves, 2HKOing offensive Skarmory and 3HKOing bulky sets. X-Scissor provides Genesect with another strong Bug-type move that it can use without having to switch out, hitting Defense-invested Cresselia, Umbreon, Mew, and Chesnaught that may be thinking about staying in to tank the U-turn. It can also clean slower teams if they have Pokemon that resist Iron Head. Special attacks such as Flamethrower, Thunderbolt, and Ice Beam can be used as coverage moves, depending on what you want Genesect to hit. Set Details 200 Speed EVs allow Genesect to outspeed unboosted base 100 Speed Pokemon, as well as Jolly Lucario and Krookodile. Maximum Attack investment allows Genesect to hit as hard as possible, and the rest of the EVs are put into HP to take hits slightly better. A Hasty nature is necessary on this set, as Extreme Speed Genesect is an event Pokemon and therefore requires it. Choice Band is the preferred item on this set, as Genesect mainly depends on predicting the next Pokemon to be coming in and switching out with U-turn, meaning it benefits most from Choice Band maximizing U-turn's power and not taking the recoil that Life Orb would cause, increasing Genesect's longevity. Usage Tips Genesect can be used as a lead in matches against Deoxys-S or any clear entry hazard-setting lead, as it can U-turn out into a teammate with Gale Wings or Defog as the foe sets up hazards. From there, the teammate can force it out while using Defog or just finish it off with an attack to prevent hazards from being setup again. Against other non-Mold Breaker entry hazard leads, Genesect can U-turn out to a Magic Bounce user or an entry hazard remover while dealing a lot of damage to the foe thanks to Choice Band- and Tough Claws-boosted U-turn. In fact, this set's main niche is U-turn. It cashes in on Genesect's ability to force switches and hits the Pokemon switching in for good damage. Genesect should keep using U-turn throughout the match, only making predictions when necessary. This means keeping entry hazards away is a must while using this Genesect variant because it will be clicking U-turn and switching out most of the time. Scout for Prankster Will-O-Wisp or Flamethrower from Mew because either can completely destroy this set. When at full health, Gale Wings users can be a problem, but Genesect can pick them off with Extreme Speed after they are weakened a bit, with the exception of Skarmory. Genesect usually forces switches, so having entry hazards up on the opponent's side is a huge advantage, as it slowly wears down their team due to entry hazard damage and U-turn. After the opposing team has been weakened, this Genesect can also function as a late-game cleaner thanks to the raw power behind Extreme Speed. Team Options Good partners to Genesect include strong Fighting- and Fire-types that can deal with the Steel-types that like to switch into it. Magnet Pull users such as Infernape and Ampharos can work really well with Genesect, as they can trap and KO Steel-types that are switching in. Ampharos might be the better choice, as it can deal with Skarmory, which is the most common switch-in to this set, more reliably than Infernape, which cannot beat all variants of Skarmory without a Focus Sash. Other partners include Magic Guard + Defog Moltres and Defog + Tinted Lens Latios. Moltres scares away Steel-types while it uses Defog, and Latios KOes Steel-types when they stay in, expecting a Defog. They can also serve as switch-ins to Fire-type moves. If you're planning on keeping entry hazards up on your opponent's side, Primordial Sea Starmie is the better partner for this, as it can switch into Fire-types Genesect hates for free, can force a switch while it spins, and beats Gengar, which is the most common Ghost-type in the AAA metagame. It also gets Thunder to hit Jellicent and strong Scalds to hit Ghost-types in general. Primordial Sea Ferrothorn is a good partner too, as it can switch into Entei and all Victini variants and proceed to set up hazards that Genesect really appreciates. On offensive teams, the popular Mold Breaker Deoxys-S can also be used as an entry hazard-setting lead. Aside from the above Primordial Sea users, Flash Fire Doublade is a great partner, as it can Pursuit trap the Fire-types that are trying to switch out of it, weakening them to Extreme Speed KO range with Pursuit. It can also serve as a spinblocker, stopping the foe from spinning entry hazards away.

Moves Bug Buzz 2HKOes Cresselia and most Psychic- and Dark-types in the metagame. Ice Beam hits Hippowdon, Chesnaught, and various Dragon-types that are common in AAA, KOing the ones Genesect outspeeds, such as Dragonite and Adamant Zygarde. Thunderbolt gets the 2HKO on CroCune, hits any Water-types that lack an Electric-type immunity, and completes the BoltBeam combination, giving it near-perfect neutral coverage. The last slot is basically up to you, as it'll hold a coverage move that allows Genesect to hit certain Pokemon its team needs it to hit. Dark Pulse 2HKOes Regenerator Doublade when it tries to pivot into one of Genesect's moves. Iron Head hits threats that are switching in such as RegenVest Goodra and Chansey harder than any of Genesect's other moves. Note that while using Iron Head, the nature and EVs need adjustment. Flamethrower gets the OHKO on Lucario and hits non-Fire-immune Steel-types, such as Magnezone. U-turn can be used over any one of the above moves, as Genesect has a tendency to force switches, and U-turn will let it maintain offensive momentum. Set Details 200 Speed EVs allow Genesect to outspeed unboosted base 100 Speed Pokemon, as well as Jolly Lucario and Krookodile. 252 Special Attack EVs allow Genesect to hit as hard as possible, and the rest of the EVs are put into HP for taking hits slightly better. Life Orb is the best item for this set, as it boosts Genesect's power without inflicting recoil damage, thanks to Sheer Force. When using Iron Head, the EV spread should be 56 Atk / 252 SpA / 200 Spe, and the nature should be Naive or Hasty. Naive allows Genesect to check -ate ability users slightly better, while Hasty allows it to take Draco Meteors from Kyurem better. Usage Tips A huge special movepool boosted by Sheer Force makes Genesect a fearsome wallbreaker. The amazing coverage gives Genesect the ability to break most of the common special walls in the metagame bar Goodra and Chansey. However, Goodra switch-ins fall to Iron Head with some prediction, as it doesn't have recovery outside of Regenerator. Genesect also makes short work of most physical walls, as they rarely have the Special Defense necessary to avoid a 2HKO from its coverage moves. While Genesect can take a few hits and retaliate, it really appreciates staying out of the gunfire as much as possible, as it can get worn down quite easily with repeated hits and entry hazards. It performs best when it can get free switches in by double switching and slow U-turns, Baton Passes, or Volt Switches. As always, Fire-types in general are threats. Genesect should never stay in against a Fire-type unless it outspeeds and the Fire-type is weakened enough to be OHKOed by Genesect's coverage moves. Genesect appreciates entry hazard support, as it limits switches, breaks Focus Sashes, and deals extra damage to foes, helping it net KOs. Lastly, because Genesect has such a wide movepool to choose from, the opponent will often scout for certain moves. It is a good idea to sometimes hold back on revealing a coverage move so that Genesect can net a KO with it later when the opponent thinks it doesn't have said move. With Refrigerate Extreme Speed being very common on Genesect, sometimes you can bluff the Refrigerate set and hit the foe with strong coverage moves. Team Options An entry hazard-setting lead such as Focus Sash Mold Breaker Deoxys-S can work well, as it can set up entry hazards and Taunt opposing setters. Genesect cannot outspeed Jolly Victini or survive a Brave Bird from a Gale Wings user, so checks to those are necessary. Regenerator Regirock can fill this role, as it can reliably switch into both multiple times. Flash Fire Doublade can fill this role too, and while it struggles with the lack of recovery letting it get worn down more easily, it can Pursuit trap all Victini and -ate ability and Gale Wings users, wearing them down as they switch out. Primordial Sea Ferrothorn can be an especially good partner, as it can switch into Entei and Victini for free and set entry hazards up, which will help Genesect net KOs more easily. Flash Fire Scizor can be a good partner as well, as it can switch into Fire-type moves aimed at Genesect and provides a slow U-turn, giving Genesect a free switch in. Scizor can also remove entry hazards to increase Genesect's longevity, and it can knock off Chansey's Eviolite and Goodra's Assault Vest, making them less reliable switch-ins to Genesect. Choice Band Adaptability Tyranitar is a good partner for Genesect, as it can Pursuit trap Chansey and Goodra, which completely wall Genesect. Because bulky Steel-types give this set trouble, Tough Claws or Adaptability Fighting-types make for good partners to Genesect as well.

Moves Zap Cannon serves as a good coverage move with high Base Power and is guaranteed to inflict paralysis. It also benefits from Refrigerate Genesect's popularity, as Water-types are popular switch-ins to Refrigerate Extreme Speed. Blizzard is the other high-powered coverage move that can take advantage of No Guard and completes the BoltBeam coverage with Zap Cannon, giving Genesect near-perfect neutral coverage. Bug Buzz allows it to hit all the Psychic- and Dark-types in the metagame for good damage. Flamethrower hits Magnezone, which the rest of this set fails to do., and it also OHKOes Lucario. Bug Buzz and Flamethrower can be replaced with U-turn and Extreme Speed; U-turn is for chip damage while switching out after paralyzing something with Zap Cannon, and Extreme Speed helps pick off weakened Pokemon. If Moltres is used as a partner, running Flash Cannon on Genesect is an option, as it can take care of Rock-types that Moltres doesn't like. Set Details 200 Speed EVs allow Genesect to outspeed unboosted base 100 Speed Pokemon, as well as Jolly Lucario and Krookodile. Maximum Special Attack investment allows Genesect to hit as hard as possible and the rest of the EVs are put into HP for a bit more bulk. Life Orb allows Genesect to pack more of a punch with its coverage moves. When using Extreme Speed and U-turn, the HP EVs should be moved to Attack, and the nature must be changed to Hasty. The Hasty nature is required because Extreme Speed Genesect is an event Pokemon. Usage Tips This Genesect mainly aims to spread around paralysis while dealing good damage with Zap Cannon, so most of the time, the best course of action is to click Zap Cannon. Zap Cannon has low PP, so don't use it recklessly against more defensive teams. Genesect can cripple offensive switch-ins such as Victini with Zap Cannon and then proceed to KO them with Bug Buzz the turn after. Keep entry hazards away so Genesect can remain healthy for a longer period of time. Make sure to scout some Pokemon, such as Latios and Mew, before you decide it's safe to bring in Genesect because Latios could run Tinted Lens to KO Genesect, and Mew could have a Fire-type coverage move. While spamming Zap Cannon, be wary of Pokemon that benefit from getting hit by an Electric move, such as Motor Drive Manaphy, which can sweep teams after just one Speed boost. Don't play recklessly with Genesect, as the Life Orb recoil, constant switching, and lack of recovery means it'll get worn down fast. Team Options Because Zap Cannon forces a lot of switches, entry hazard support is greatly appreciated. This makes Deoxys-S, Ferrothorn, and Forretress good partners, as they can all reliably set entry hazards, and the latter two can even serve as Fire-type switch-ins if they have Flash Fire. Forretress can even use a slow Volt Switch to give Genesect safe switches in. Gale Wings users and Fire-types can cause trouble for Genesect, so Flash Fire Doublade can be a nice partner to deal with both. Doublade also deals with Poison Heal Snorlax, which gives this set trouble, quite well. Magic Guard Moltres is an alternate Fire-type switch-in that can scare away Steel-types, keep up momentum with U-turn, and Defog away entry hazards. An alternate entry hazard remover and Fire-type switch-in is Primordial Sea Starmie. Starmie can deal solid damage to all spinblockers, switch into Fire-types for free and proceed to spin or throw out a Scald, and it deals with most Steel-types barring Ferrothorn thanks to rain-boosted Scald. Magic Bounce Gyarados can keep entry hazards off of the field while doubling as a switch-in to Fire-type moves and a wincon. Powerful wallbreakers such as Tough Claws Pangoro and Adaptability Tyranitar are good partners, as they can deal a lot of damage to the opposing team when the opponent's Pokemon are paralyzed; the paralysis also helps slow wallbreakers overcome their lack of Speed. Adaptability Tyranitar can also Pursuit trap Chansey and Goodra, both of which wall this set completely.

Moves Refrigerate-boosted Extreme Speed makes Genesect a fearsome revenge killer that OHKOes all Gale Wings users bar Skarmory and heavily damages anything that doesn't resist it. Thunderbolt completes the BoltBeam combination, giving Genesect near-perfect neutral coverage. It also allows Genesect to hit bulky Water-types, which are common switch-ins to Refrigerate Genesect. Flamethrower and Blaze Kick can be used in the third slot to hit bulky Steel-types that switch into Extreme Speed. While Blaze Kick comes off of the higher attack stat in this set, Flamethrower is preferred because most Steel-types that switch into Genesect are physically defensive and Flamethrower hits them harder; it also has the added benefit of not missing. Shift Gear can also be used in this slot, as it boosts Genesect's Speed, letting it outpace almost everything in the metagame while simultaneously boosting its Attack, turning Genesect into a fearsome late-game cleaner. Iron Head can be used in this slot to hit Fairies and KO Shuckle before it can set up both Stealth Rock and Sticky Web. In the last slot, Techno Blast can be used, as it hits extremely hard when combined with the Refrigerate boost, even denting special walls like RegenVest Goodra on the switch. Alternatively, U-turn is good in the last slot because Genesect forces a lot of switches, allowing it to gain momentum while doing quite a bit of damage to the opponent's switch-in. Another interesting option for the last slot is Explosion, as it hits extremely hard when combined with Refrigerate's and Life Orb's boosts and can be used as a last-resort move to deal an insane amount of damage to switch-ins or prevent entry hazard removal from working. Set Details 252 Attack EVs are used to maximize the power of Extreme Speed. 184 Speed EVs allow Genesect to outspeed Jolly Lucario, which would otherwise switch in on Extreme Speed and KO Genesect with Close Combat. The rest of the EVs are dumped into Special Attack to boost the power of Genesect's coverage moves. Not only does Life Orb provide a damage boost for Extreme Speed, it also powers up Genesect's coverage moves, making defensive Pokemon such as Ferrothorn and Skarmory less likely to switch into it. Pixilate can also be used instead of Refrigerate for this set to hit Dark and Fighting-types harder, but it misses the OHKO on most Gale Wings users. Usage Tips Thanks to Refrigerate-boosted Extreme Speed, Genesect serves as an offensive check to all Gale Wings users. While facing an opponent with a Gale Wings user on their team, Genesect must be brought in to revenge kill it after a Pokemon has fainted or by double switching when you predict the Gale Wings user to come in. However, keep in mind that Genesect cannot safely switch into any Gale Wings users. Genesect should not be played recklessly because, while it's a great asset against faster, frailer teams, it takes a lot of damage from most moves they throw at it, which, along with its lack of recovery and susceptibility to entry hazard damage and Life Orb recoil, wears it down easily. Because Genesect will generally have to switch out after it revenge kills something, having entry hazards up on your side of the field will limit Genesect's opportunities to switch in and will wear it down very fast. Genesect appreciates having entry hazards up on the opponent's side of the field, as it breaks potential Focus Sashes and the chip damage really helps Genesect while it tries to revenge kill threats with Extreme Speed. The entry hazards will also help wear down Genesect's checks when you make double switches, predicting them switching in and forcing them to switch out. Team Options An entry hazard setter such as Mold Breaker Deoxys-S is a good partner, as it can stack entry hazards on the opponent's side while stopping the opponent from setting up their own due to Taunt, which capitalizes on Genesect's ability to force switches and wear down the opponent's team by having its checks rack up entry hazard damage. With Victini being the most common Fire-type in the AAA metagame, a Flash Fire user with Pursuit such as Doublade or Krookodile really helps Genesect out. Pokemon that resist Fire-type moves that also have access to Pursuit such as Tyranitar can also work. Wallbreakers such as Adaptability Latios and Tough Claws Victini are also good partners, as they can weaken the opponent's team enough to let Genesect clean later in the game. Genesect appreciates Healing Wish support, so Latias can also be used for the added utility and bulk, but it loses out on some power compared to Latios. A Magic Bounce user such as Gyarados can work really well with Genesect because it can beat common entry hazard setters and severely dent teams after a Dragon Dance, even breaking through Unaware walls by Mega Evolving to gain Mold Breaker, leaving them in KO range for Genesect. Primordial Sea Starmie can also work as a good partner, as it can KO most entry hazard setters with its strong STAB Water-type moves or use Rapid Spin to clear entry hazards when the entry hazard setters switch out. Starmie also dents physical walls that annoy Genesect and serves as a switch-in to Fire-types. Both Gyarados and Starmie can also serve as switch-ins to Fire-type attacks, the latter being more reliable due to it being able to switch in for free against Fire-types and KO them or force them out. Genesect greatly appreciates Sticky Web support if it lacks Shift Gear, as it patches up Genesect's matchup problem against hyper offensive teams by bringing the faster, frailer Pokemon into Genesect's Speed tier to let it overpower them, while the Flying-types that are immune to Sticky Web are KOed by Extreme Speed anyway.

Genesect is one of the premier Choice Scarf users in the tier thanks to its good Speed stat and ability to beat other common Choice Scarf users such as Landorus-T with its Download-boosted attacks. BoltBeam coverage means that only a select few Pokemon resist Genesect's coverage. U-turn makes Genesect an excellent scout. It also allows it to dent Pokemon such as Cresselia and Tyranitar, and provides an answer to Reuniclus, one of the most popular Trick Room setters. With a beneficial Download boost, U-turn OHKOes both Latios and Latias, thus taking a major threat out of the game. Thunder will OHKO max HP Politoed 75% of the time, making it the better option for a rain team; however, Thunderbolt still packs quite a punch. The last slot depends on your team. Flamethrower provides more coverage but is worse on rain teams, on the one hand while Bug Buzz gives Genesect a special STAB move in case you don't want it to switch out. Explosion is great late-game, and can help deal with things your team might struggle with. Genesect must always be wary of getting predicted and locked into a bad move, as it doesn't have much bulk to rely on. Make sure you scout out the enemy's Choice Scarf users before being too reckless with Genesect due to this frailty. Furthermore, Choice Scarf Genesect hates dealing with sun teams, as it can't do much damage to many of their major threats. The given EV Spread allows Genesect to outspeed everything up to and including Deoxys-A (with 236 Speed EVs). The extra EVs in Attack allows Genesect to 2HKO Cresselia provided it receives an attack boost from Download. Giga Drain can be used in the last slot if your team has trouble dealing with the commonly seen Gastrodon. Genesect benefits greatly from a Pokemon that resists Fire-type attacks, such as Tyranitar; Genesect's immunity to sandstorm makes Tyranitar an even better partner. Chandelure also works as a great partner, as it can also get a boost from Fire-type attacks directed at Genesect.

This set makes use of Genesect's BoltBeam coverage to hit almost everything for at least neutral damage and many Pokemon super effectively. U-turn is great for scouting the opponent's team and is an option for when Genesect gets an Attack boost from Download. It also hits common Pokemon such as Tyranitar in sandstorm for more damage than Bug Buzz, which is still a viable alternative if you want a special STAB that is unaffected by Intimidate. Thunder is the better choice for rain teams and can OHKO 252/0 Politoed, provided Genesect has a Special Attack boost from Download; however, it is risky if rain is not up. Ice Beam deals with Dragons-types and other Pokemon 4x weak to it, such as Landorus-T, allowing Genesect to outspeed and KO them. Protect is standard for prediction and can keep Genesect safe while its counters are removed. Flamethrower is an option over Protect to increase Genesect's coverage but means Genesect is even more threatened by its checks and counters, and will be forced to switch out more often. With a favorable Download boost, Genesect can easily defeat a lot of Pokemon with not-so-stellar defenses; however, anything with decent bulk can force it out. Genesect also hates Trick Room, as it works against Genesect's Speed. Pokemon with moves such as Taunt to stop the enemy from using Trick Room can be good partners. This set really benefits from Tailwind support as it helps Genesect take on faster opponents and also lets it U-turn out into a Tailwind setter to keep momentum. Genesect partners well with Chandelure and Heatran, as they make opponents think twice about using Fire-type attacks. Genesect takes no damage from sandstorm, meaning it is easy to fit onto a sandstorm team. Giga Drain can be used to take down Gastrodon if it is an issue. Blizzard is viable, especially in hail, as it really packs a punch and can deal major damage. A Focus Sash can secure a few surprise KOs, but Expert Belt and Life Orb are generally better. Expert Belt is the preferred choice for most teams as it helps Genesect get a number of significant KOs with no drawbacks. Genesect can also use a Life Orb to increase its damage output, but it means that Genesect is worn down much faster.

Genesect can run a very dangerous Rock Polish set, sweeping late-game once its counters have been weakened. It sits at a frightening 606 Speed after a Rock Polish, outspeeding even Jolly Excadrill in the sand; this ensures that fast Choice Scarf users such as Terrakion and Latios will not be able to rain on Genesect's parade. Obtaining a Rock Polish boost is not too difficult, either, when you consider the number of switches that Genesect forces; it can easily switch into a physical wall such as Skarmory, snag a Special Attack boost thanks to Download, and set up Rock Polish as the opponent switches. As an added plus, Genesect resists priority moves such as Ice Shard and Extreme Speed, and even Mach Punch from the likes of Breloom and Conkeldurr will not OHKO it. Flamethrower, Ice Beam, and Thunderbolt are Genesect's primary attacking options, covering a wide range of common threats in the metagame and giving it perfect neutral coverage. However, Bug Buzz can be used over Thunderbolt in the last moveslot as Genesect loves having a powerful STAB option to sweep weakened teams with. As Genesect is not running any physical attacks, simply maximizing its Special Attack and Speed and using a Timid nature is the way to go. The remaining 4 EVs are invested in Special Defense to ensure that opposing Genesect only get an Attack boost in the rare case that they switch in. Don't even consider using Leftovers on this set; the power boost offered by Life Orb to all of Genesect's attacks is too good to pass up. If you are running Genesect on a rain team, Thunder and Bug Buzz should be used instead of Thunderbolt and Flamethrower, respectively. Since this set is to be used only as a late-game sweeper, it needs quite some support from its teammates in order to be effective. First, a powerful physical attacker such as Choice Band Terrakion makes a fantastic offensive partner, as it can easily take out special tanks such as Tyranitar, Heatran, and Blissey that put a stop to Genesect's fun. Chandelure gives this set a lot of trouble, as it can take a hit at full health and KO back, meaning a strong Pursuit user such as Tyranitar is a good teammate. Focus Sash Dugtrio can help here as well, as it can trap and take out the aforementioned threats that can stop Genesect's sweep. Entry hazard support also helps Genesect immensely, ensuring that the aforementioned threats cannot keep sponging its attacks and thus paving the way for a sweep. Providing Genesect with Wish support can give it a second chance to pull off a sweep; good options for this role include Blissey, Vaporeon, and Latias. Lastly, while not absolutely necessary, Rapid Spin support too can allow Genesect to attempt a sweep several times, especially if you can't afford to spare a teamslot just for Wish support.

While Genesect falls agonizingly short of the magic base 100 Speed tier, it can still put a Choice Scarf set to great use with its base 99 Speed, outspeeding threats such as Dragonite, Haxorus, and Gyarados after a Dragon Dance. What makes this set so dangerous is Genesect's access to Download, a slew of coverage moves, and STAB U-turn, making it hard to counter. Thanks to its numerous resistances, Genesect can repeatedly switch in safely, obtain a Download boost, and scout the opponent's move with U-turn or fire off a powerful attack. Unlike Scizor, Genesect can deal heavy damage to bulky threats such as Skarmory and Jellicent which are common switch-ins to U-turn, while still outspeeding a major portion of the metagame. Once faster checks have been eliminated, Genesect can also sweep a weakened team late-game if it obtains a Special Attack boost. U-turn makes Genesect a powerful momentum grabber that can break down walls with ease; with STAB and an Attack boost from Download, it can deal heavy damage to a wide range of threats, even those that resist it. It also eases prediction early-game, as Genesect can hit the switch-in hard and go to a counter. Ice Beam takes out Dragon-type threats such as Dragonite and Garchomp, while Flamethrower roasts Steel-types such as Skarmory looking to sponge U-turn. Finally, Thunderbolt takes out Water-types such as Keldeo and Jellicent which can take Genesect's other moves, gets a hard hit on Chandelure, and gives Genesect BoltBeam coverage. However, Bug Buzz can be used over either of Thunderbolt or Flamethrower for a strong special STAB with which to clean up late-game. The EV spread maximizes Genesect's Special Attack and Speed, with a Speed-boosting nature being used to make the most of Genesect's unique Speed tier. A Hasty nature is preferred to soak up resisted Dragon-type moves such as Latios's Draco Meteor, but Naive is also an option to better take powerful physical priority attacks such as Mach Punch. It should also be noted that, depending on your team, some EVs can be shifted from Special Attack to Attack to obtain the OHKO on certain threats with U-turn: 68 EVs (with an Attack boost) for Serperior, 104 EVs for Deoxys-S, and 112 EVs (with an Attack boost) for Latios. If you don't wish to lower Genesect's defenses, running a Timid nature is also an option, though this will significantly lower U-turn's power. Genesect loves having entry hazards on the opponent's field, as this wears down its counters and makes it hard for them to repeatedly soak up its attacks. Forretress and Ferrothorn are great choices for this role; they compound Genesect's Fire-type weakness though, so Deoxys-S is also an option. Rapid Spin support is recommended as Genesect needs to switch in multiple times and is vulnerable to entry hazards. Heatran is a huge pain for this set to deal with, meaning powerful attackers that can take it out, such as Terrakion and Garchomp, make great teammates. Dugtrio in particular is an excellent partner, as Genesect can U-turn out of a Heatran switch-in and pop its Air Balloon, allowing Dugtrio to trap and OHKO Heatran with Earthquake. Volt Switch users such as Rotom-W and Raikou are also great offensive partners, especially if you are using Genesect on a VoltTurn team. Genesect can also be used as a part of a VoltTurn core on a rain team, since the rain somewhat mitigates its Fire-type weakness and allows it to run Thunder over Thunderbolt, making Politoed a good teammate; do note though that Bug Buzz should be used over Flamethrower.

This set capitalizes on Genesect's excellent coverage and access to Download to function as a powerful mid-game attacker, tearing gaping holes in the opponent's team. The ability to switch moves eases prediction immensely, as Genesect can simply fire off powerful attacks and U-turn to a teammate when met with a counter, wearing down the opponent's defensive core for a teammate to muscle through and sweep later. Walls such as Ferrothorn, Jellicent, and Skarmory are all destroyed by the appropriate move, and even Blissey takes upwards of 50% damage from +1 U-turn. Though Genesect is narrowly outsped by Garchomp and the numerous threats with base 100 Speed, it can still get past these checks with U-turn and some prediction, dealing heavy damage to them as they switch in and going to a teammate that can take them out. Special Attack and Speed are maximized, with a Naive or a Hasty nature used depending on the attacks you wish Genesect to take: Hasty for special Dragon-type attacks such as Draco Meteor, and Naive for powerful physical priority like Breloom's Mach Punch. Some EVs can be shifted from Special Attack to Attack for nabbing the OHKO on threats such as Deoxys-S with U-turn. Life Orb is the preferred item for the power boost which it offers to all of Genesect's attacks, but Expert Belt is also a great option to bluff a Choice set and nab a surprise KO or two. Shed Shell can be used to escape from Chandelure while bluffing a Choice set. If using Expert Belt or Shed Shell, you could opt to replace U-turn with Substitute in the fourth moveslot, run a Timid nature, and move the 4 Attack EVs into Special Defense to fool the opponent into believing that Genesect is running a Choice Scarf. This allows it to easily set up a Substitute and nab a surprise KO or two, which can be game-changing. If you are using Genesect on a rain team, use Thunder instead of Thunderbolt; Hidden Power Water is also an option over Flamethrower to deal heavy damage to Heatran in the rain. Bug Buzz might seem usable over one of Genesect's coverage options, but as mentioned earlier, this set relies heavily on Genesect's fantastic coverage, and U-turn already deals heavy damage to threats such as Tyranitar. Finally, Hidden Power Ground can be used to nab a surprise KO on Heatran, but its surprise factor can be ruined by the use of Protect. As this set functions primarily as a wallbreaker, its best teammates are powerful sweepers which can sweep a weakened team with ease. However, randomly slapping on a few sweepers will rarely prove to be effective. While Genesect is highly efficient at breaking through defensive cores and can take the odd hit or two with its decent defenses, it is easily taken out by pretty much any faster attacker with a super effective Fire-type attack, meaning bulky Dragon-types such as Dragonite and Garchomp make great teammates; they can take advantage of Genesect eliminating Steel-types such as Ferrothorn and Skarmory to set up and sweep or just spam Outrage. Alternatively, a fast Choice Scarf user such as Terrakion or Latios can sweep a weakened team with ease. Entry hazard support too is, as always, of great help to Genesect and its teammates, since it makes wallbreaking a much easier task.
