Moves Goomy's Draco Meteor is so powerful that two Draco Meteors will always outdamage two Dragon Pulses, even with the Special Attack drop. However, Dragon Pulse can be used over it if you foresee staying in on foes for more than two attacks. The second slot is up to you, and is selected based on what you don't want to switch in on Goomy: Sludge Wave hits incoming Fairy-types, whereas Hidden Power Fighting hits Steel-types such as Pawniard. Rest provides the recovery necessary to prolong Goomy's defensive utility. Sleep Talk keeps Goomy from being total setup bait during the two turns of sleep from Rest. However, Goomy is still setup bait for the most part due to its weak attacks and its reliance on picking the correct attacking option to do any meaningful damage. Set Details The listed EV spread and a Bold nature maximize Goomy's Defense and bolster its Special Defense, giving it a spread of 22 / 14 / 16 before Eviolite. The extra EVs are put into Speed, as it is the only remaining stat that can be raised with 36 EVs. However, if you choose to use Hidden Power Fighting, you will have to forgo the Speed EVs with a spread of 76 HP / 240 Def / 160 SpD to maintain the same defensive stats. Eviolite raises Goomy's defenses and is preferred over Berry Juice, as Goomy both needs the increased defenses Eviolite provides to check threats such as Chinchou and already has access to Rest. It is possible to move the 76 HP EVs into Special Attack, then notably scoring a 2HKO on Spritzee with Sludge Wave. However, Goomy is then 3HKOed by attacks such as Timburr's Drain Punch and can no longer beat Snivy without Sap Sipper. Usage Tips Goomy needs to be at high health to consistently stomach the physical attacks it needs to take to activate Gooey. This entails using Rest often. Goomy can also check special attackers such as Chinchou to an extent due to its naturally high Special Defense and its Dragon typing. It is usually enough for Goomy to switch in, attack once, Rest, and then switch out. Gooey is its main niche and should be used in a pivoting fashion to benefit other slower, more powerful attackers. Team Options It's a good idea to pair Goomy with a bulky physical wall to pivot into after activating Gooey. Ponyta works well in this role, and it can help get around the Fairy-, Steel-, and Ice-types that trouble Goomy. Slow, bulky attackers such as Pancham and Skrelp appreciate the Gooey support Goomy provides; Pancham has the added benefit of beating Steel-types and luring Fairy-types with Gunk Shot, whereas Skrelp beats Fairy-types and lures Steel-types with Hidden Power Fire. Steel-types cover all of Goomy's weaknesses, whereas Goomy does well against Fire- and Fighting-type Pokemon. Magnemite is particularly good in tandem with Goomy, as it can trap and remove Steel-type Pokemon via Magnet Pull, allowing Goomy to run Sludge Wave without issue.
