Use Taunt against slower Pokemon that may try to beat Jellicent by crippling it with status or take advantage of it to set up hazards, such as Blissey and Alomomola. Its immunity to Water-type moves also allows Jellicent to switch in to opposing Water-types, such as Tentacruel, Alomomola, and Starmie, but you should be wary of Toxic from the former two and Thunderbolt from the latter. Take advantage of Jellicent's Ghost typing to spinblock effectively by pivoting into Rapid Spin users, such as Tentacruel and Starmie. Afterwards, afflicting the foe with status or double switching to a Pokemon that threatens out the aforementioned spinblockers are both great plays. Thanks to its naturally high Special Defense, Jellicent can switch in on weak or neutral special hits, such as defensive Sylveon's Hyper Voice and Volcanion's Earth Power. Jellicent is a huge threat to defensive teams if played correctly, as it can spam Taunt against them and continually chip slower Pokemon. Entry hazard setters, such as Klefki, Hippowdon, and Cobalion, appreciate Jellicent's ability to keep their hazards up. Hippowdon deserves a special mention, as it has a great defensive synergy with Jellicent; it can beat Electric-type Pokemon, which Jellicent struggles against, and Jellicent can beat Water-type Pokemon, which Hippowdon has trouble with. Due to Jellicent's susceptibility to Pursuit trappers, such as Krookodile and Alolan Muk, Pokemon that take on those, such as Togekiss and Krookodile, respectively, make good partners for it. Clerics and status absorbers such as Mega Altaria and Blissey synergize well with Jellicent, as Jellicent can be quite easily crippled by status. Jellicent works well with Toxic Spikes users, such as Tentacruel, Nidoqueen, and Nihilego, as it can take advantage of Toxic Spikes to automatically power up Hex on grounded targets. Mimikyu knocks out Dark-type Pokemon for Jellicent such as Mega Sableye and Mega Sharpedo, and uses Jellicent's Toxic in order to wear the opposing Pokemon down enough for a KO. Gourgeist-XL is another partner for Jellicent for its high Defense and ability to take Electric- and Grass-type attacks directed at Jellicent. Jellicent can also take Fire- and Ice-type attacks, such as Alolan Ninetales's Blizzard and Volcanion's Fire Blast for Gourgeist-XL, making them an adequate defensive core. Dhelmise appreciates Jellicent's ability to take Fire and Ice attacks. Alolan Marowak is another great partner for Jellicent because of its defensive typing and ability, being able to absorb Electric-type attacks with Lightning Rod. Its wallbreaking potential also allows it to deal with Mega Venusaur, Alolan Muk, and Ferrothorn for Jellicent, while Jellicent can take Water-type attacks for it. Alolan Marowak sets up Stealth Rock, which Jellicent can take advantage of because of the switches it forces. Alongside Dhelmise, Gourgeist, or Alolan Marowak, Jellicent forms a powerful core due to their combined resistances.

Utilizing Hex does have additional special benefits though: it allows Jellicent to heavily damage Pokemon that otherwise have no difficulty switching in on most defensive threats, such as Venusaur and Sigilyph. Another variation of this set involves dropping Will-O-Wisp and instead going for dual STAB with Scald + Hex, the advantage being that Jellicent gets the best of both worlds in beating Fire-types and destroying statused Pokemon; however, relying on Scald to inflict status isn't always the best approach, especially when Jellicent needs an instantaneous burn to bring down Escavalier, among other threats. Set Details With 44 Speed EVs, Jellicent outspeeds minimum Speed Alomomola and can then Taunt it before it can hit Jellicent with a Toxic or get a Wish off. Jellicent can also opt for more Speed EVs—84 specifically—in order to outspeed Hitmontop, Taunt it, and prevent it from using Foresight or Toxic; this helps keep entry hazards up on team builds that rely more on Spikes to win games. The rest of the EVs are focused on Defense, as Jellicent works best by checking physical attackers such as Rhyperior, Flygon, Escavalier, Fletchinder, and Emboar; however, a specially defensive spread can find use by allowing Jellicent to more easily switch in on Mega Camerupt and Diancie and pivot out of more ferocious special attackers such as Exploud. Water Absorb should be the only ability Jellicent uses, as the immunity to Scald burns is crucial for it to function. Colbur Berry compromises Jellicent's passive recovery in exchange for a much better matchup against Knock Off-wielding Fighting-types such as Hitmonlee. In addition, Colbur Berry makes Jellicent much less vulnerable to Pursuit and allows it to beat Dark-types such as Sneasel one-on-one. Usage Tips Jellicent can switch in on many physical attackers, including Mega Glalie, Rhyperior, Samurott, Fletchinder, and Druddigon, and threaten them with a Scald or Will-O-Wisp. While Jellicent has no trouble switching in on various physical and special attackers, avoid getting Jellicent statused at all costs because it will be forced to Recover more often and have difficulty staying in to stallbreak. Speaking of which, the combination of Taunt + Will-O-Wisp should only be used versus slower targets; against faster teams, it's simply better to attack or anticipate a switch and use Will-O-Wisp. Be wary of using Will-O-Wisp too recklessly with a Houndoom on the opposing team, though. Jellicenet may also switch in on certain defensive Pokemon such as Diancie and prevent it from using Heal Bell or setting up Stealth Rock and spin block Rapid Spin users such as Blastoise. Team Options Fairy-types such as Mega Audino work well with Jellicent by sponging Knock Offs, whereas Diancie can check Fire-types such as Houndoom and allow Jellicent to use Hex freely in addition to soft-checking certain Psychic-types such as Meloetta, Hoopa, and Sigilpyh. Both can also offer cleric support on the off-chance Jellicent does end up getting crippled by status. Steel-types such as Registeel make for good partners as well due to the fact that they can check Electric-types that bother Jellicent. Both can also provide Stealth Rock support that is useful in chipping away at the opposing team in tandem with Jellicent's ability to spread status. Bulky Dragon-types such as Druddigon and defensive Flygon also make for good partners with their ability to keep Electric-types in line. Druddigon can provide some unique support by spreading paralysis with Glare, which aids Hex variants of Jellicent, while Flygon can clear off entry hazards such as Toxic Spikes. On balanced teams, offensive partners such as Emboar can check Grass-types and Houndoom for Jellicent, whereas Virizion has excellent defensive synergy with Jellicent and appreciate its ability to spread burns so that they have an easier time busting through their checks. On more defensive teams, bulky Venusaur and Roselia make for fantastic partners due to their great synergy, as well as hold the ability to absorb Toxic Spikes and spread around status. However, this cuts significantly into Jellicent's physical bulk and makes it less reliable for taking powerful attacks such as Entei's Sacred Fire. A compromise between bulk and a fast Taunt can be achieved by tailoring the Speed EVs to outspeed certain walls; for example, 44 EVs outspeed base 65s such as Umbreon and Alomomola, while 124 EVs allow Jellicent to outspeed Florges. Usage Tips Jellicent should be coming in on bulky setup Pokemon such as Cresselia, Snorlax, and Suicune, to beat them 1v1, as Taunt shuts down their setup and recovery moves. Jellicent can also come in on weak special hits because its great special bulk and its immunities allow for more switch-ins than normal; however, it must be wary, as most of the Fighting-types that it walls carry Knock Off. Jellicent can also check a plethora of common physical attackers such as Entei, Darmanitan, Mega Swampert, Cobalion, and Lucario. Jellicent's access to Taunt, which shuts down all forms of reliable recovery and status moves, allows it to wear down the foe fairly quickly with its own status moves. Team Options Bulky Ground-types such as Gligar and Krookodile appreciate Jellicent's Water-type immunity and can provide Stealth Rock support. Krookodile in particular is a great partner, as its Dark typing covers Jellicent's weaknesses. Entry hazard support is essential, as Jellicent can force a lot of switches and shut down recovery on slower Pokemon. Partners such as Forretress and Krookodile can lay down Stealth Rock, and Jellicent can spinblock fairly well thanks to its Ghost typing. Entry hazard removal is also great, as Jellicent is susceptible to all types of entry hazards. Pokemon such as Forretress or Crobat can provide reliable Rapid Spin and Defog support and can help keep momentum with Volt Switch and U-turn, respectively, allowing Jellicent to come in safely. Cleric support from Sylveon is great, as Jellicent hates being worn down by status ailments, which it cannot get rid of on its own.

Moves Trick Room provides Jellicent's team with speed control. Hydro Pump is a strong offensive option if Jellicent is your team's preferred lead. Scald can be a bit more reliable at times, and its burn chance can cause headaches as well. If using Amoonguss as a sleep inducer, be conscious about whether it would be more effective to burn the foe or put it to sleep. If using Cursed Body, don't be afraid to use Recover liberally in order to disable key moves. Will-O-Wisp thwarts Mega Mawile's and Mega Kangaskhan's Sucker Punch, making them significantly less threatening. Team Options Pokemon such as Scrafty offer Fake Out support, which makes it much easier for Jellicent to set up Trick Room. Mega Camerupt takes advantage of both Trick Room and Jellicent's Water Absorb quite well, with Trick Room capitalizing on its extremely low Speed and Water Absorb covering its 4x weakness to Water. In return, Mega Camerupt can take out Grass-types that would otherwise threaten Jellicent. Hoopa-U is a cool team option to beat Aegislash. It also helps out Trick Room teams with its ability to break through foes that use Protect. Ferrothorn is a great partner that forms a nice Fire / Water / Grass core with Mega Camerupt that's fairly hard to take down. Both Rhydon and Rhyperior provide great physical bulk, helping make up for Jellicent's low Defense. They can also redirect Electric-type moves for Jellicent with Lightning Rod, and they can beat most Electric-types save for Rotom-W effortlessly. In return, Jellicent provides them with an amazing Water-type switch-in and can patch up their terrible Speed with Trick Room. Sylveon benefits from Will-O-Wisp with its poor Defense and helps against all Dark-type Pokemon, which are pretty threatening to Jellicent. Diancie can beat foes such as Mega Charizard Y and Thundurus, can be a secondary Trick Room setter to ease Jellicent's load, and beats Dark-types. Redirection from Pokemon such as Amoonguss and Togekiss can buy free turns in order to set up Trick Room and spread Will-O-Wisp. Both of them also provide useful resistances such as Grass and Electric with Amoonguss and can offensively threaten Pokemon that Jellicent struggles with, with Togekiss beating Grass-types and Amoonguss wrecking Water-types. Mega Abomasnow works well under Trick Room and has good defensive synergy with Jellicent, dealing with Grass-types while Jellicent takes on Fire- and Fighting-types. If Jellicent is used on a full Trick Room team, it is nearly always recommended to bring a second Trick Room setter, such as Cresselia.

Water Spout is the move that Jellicent should be using most of the time, so if Jellicent is at low HP, use Recover to maintain its high Base Power. If running Water Absorb, have Jellicent switch in on predicted Water-type attacks to heal some of its HP. If Cursed Body is being used, spam Recover to stall out the foe's move; their attack will be disabled eventually. Team Options Slow Fake Out users such as Hariyama and Scrafty help Jellicent safely set up Trick Room. Fighting-types such as Conkeldurr and the aforementioned Fake Out users pair well with Jellicent, as Jellicent can beat the Psychic-types that threaten all but Scrafty, and they can beat the Dark-types that threaten Jellicent. Mega Mawile can also handle Dark-types, and Jellicent can beat the Fire-types that threaten Mega Mawile. Politoed's Drizzle ability sets up rain, and if Jellicent has Water Absorb, Politoed can spam Surf to constantly heal Jellicent to keep it healthy and retain Water Spout's power. Redirection support from Pokemon such as Togekiss and Amoonguss helps Jellicent safely set up Trick Room. Togekiss can handle most of the Dark-types that threaten Jellicent, and Jellicent can handle the Fire-, Psychic-, and Ice-types that threaten Amoonguss, which works especially well under Trick Room. Mega Camerupt and Mega Abomasnow are both great Trick Room sweepers that can easily dispose of the Grass-types that threaten Jellicent. Mawile and Scrafty provide Intimidate support, giving Jellicent an easier time against physical attackers. In Battle Spot Doubles, you can get away with using two Trick Room setters; as a result, Cresselia and Gothitelle are good partners for Jellicent. They provide Helping Hand support to boost the power of Jellicent's attacks to monstrous levels; however, these Pokemon share Jellicent's weakness to Ghost-type moves.

Jellicent makes a solid Leftovers user thanks to its bulk. Usage Tips Use Jellicent's useful array of resistances to come in and start spreading burns. Use Recover when Jellicent's taken a beating. If the opponent is likely to switch Pokemon, it's best to go for a Will-O-Wisp or Recover as they switch, as a Pokemon that is resistant to Jellicent's attacks is likely coming out. Team Options Jellicent enjoys the company of Pokemon that can buy it some time to burn the foe. In this sense, Mega Kangaskhan and Amoonguss make for good partners. Grass- and Fire-types, such as Amoonguss, Ferrothorn, and Heatran, synergize well with Jellicent. Fighting-types such as Conkeldurr and Fairy-types such as Sylveon help deal with Jellicent's vulnerability to Dark-types such as Hydreigon.

Jellicent is decent at utilizing Choice Scarf, outspeeding both Tornadus and Thundurus. Thus, Jellicent will often outspeed the opponent and unleash a full-power Water Spout. Shadow Ball is STAB and hits Trick Room users such as Reuniclus and opposing Jellicent. Ice Beam hits Dragon-types and genies, and while Blizzard hits both, it has shaky accuracy, and is thus not recommended. Scald is used in case Jellicent takes damage so that it won't be stuck with a weakened Water Spout as its only STAB attack. On the other hand, Energy Ball hits opposing Water-types, such as Seismitoad, for super effective damage. Timid is the recommended nature, because with Modest Jellicent misses out on outspeeding Timid Thundurus. The EVs aim to give Jellicent as much power and Speed as possible. Tailwind support benefits this set, letting Jellicent serve as a counter to the frail threats. For this reason, Tornadus or Whimsicott helps Jellicent greatly. Rain Dance is a boon to Jellicent, powering up its Water Spout, and so, Tornadus and Thundurus make excellent partners for it. Damage calculations against Pokemon that commonly set up Trick Room are given below: Shadow Ball vs 252/0 Reuniclus: 53.4% - 64.5% Shadow Ball vs 252/0 Jellicent: 49.2% - 57.9%

STAB Water Spout paired with a Water Gem hits nearly everything in VGC very hard. Shadow Ball is Jellicent's secondary STAB attack, hitting common Trick Room users for super effective damage. Ice Beam hits the genies and, more importantly, Hydreigon, who otherwise resists Jellicent's attacks, for super effective damage. Protect lets Jellicent stall out Trick Room, or lets its partner KO a threat. Water Gem powers up Water Spout, but Sitrus Berry helps Jellicent stay alive longer. The choice of nature is one between Speed and power. With Tailwind support, Jellicent is already outspeeding most Pokemon, so a Modest nature is preferred. Tailwind support is needed with this set, so Tornadus or Whimsicott make great partners. Jellicent also benefits from Rain Dance, so Thundurus or Tornadus are good partners too. Fake Out support is greatly beneficial to Jellicent, allowing it to use STAB Water Spouts with full Base Power. Hydreigon works well when paired with Jellicent, as it has Surf to heal Jellicent (assuming that Jellicent is using Water Absorb), keeping Jellicent's Water Spouts at maximum Base Power.

With its impressive bulk, Jellicent is great at setting up Trick Room either as a lead or after Trick Room has run out. Water Spout deals a lot of damage off the bat, especially with a Water Gem. Scald can be used, however, if the weakening of Water Spout's Base Power after taking a hit is an issue. Trick Room is there to reset Trick Room if it has gone down, or not been set up at all. Shadow Ball is for STAB and hitting opposing Ghost-types such as Chandelure, who otherwise threaten it, for super effective damage. Ice Beam hits Dragon-types and the genies, though Protect can be used for stalling out Tailwind or letting Jellicent's partner take out a dangerous Pokemon. Water Gem gives Water Spout a one-turn boost, but Sitrus Berry lets Jellicent stay alive longer and maintain Water Spout's high Base Power. The EVs maximize HP and Special Attack for bulk and increased attacking power. 0 Speed IVs lets Jellicent be as slow as possible in Trick Room. Still, Jellicent is a tad too fast for Trick Room, so Pokemon such as Musharna will move before Jellicent in Trick Room, possibly weakening its Water Spout with a super effective Shadow Ball.

The main goal of this set is for Jellicent to provide team support in the form of Trick Room, so naturally Trick Room is in the first moveslot. Jellicent has a miserable time handling physical attackers, such as Bisharp and Tyranitar; therefore, the burn chance from Scald can come in handy. Alternatively, Water Spout is a more powerful STAB move, which lets Jellicent deal huge damage to the opposition if Jellicent is at full health and given rain support. Shadow Ball provides coverage against common Trick Room counters that can plague Trick Room teams, namely Musharna, Azelf, and Chandelure, who can either reverse Trick Room or Imprison your Pokemon. Shadow Ball also hits Latias and Latios harder than Ice Beam would. Finally, Protect allows Jellicent to stall for more burn damage, or just lets you keep Jellicent out of harm's way while your partner does work. You can run Ice Beam for added coverage against Grass-types, such as Whimsicott and Amoonguss, and Dragon-types, such as Garchomp, Salamence, and Dragonite, but common teammates will more than likely have Ice-type coverage moves, so this is a lesser option. Unlike Scald, Will-O-Wisp guarantees a burn if it hits, which can be useful. Jellicent has a terrible time handling strong Electric-type attacks. Hence, Jellicent can use Wacan Berry to take some of the strongest Electric-type attacks, such as Electric Gem Thunder from a Modest Zapdos. However, if through team support of some sort, Jellicent doesn't need to worry about Electric-type attacks, Sitrus Berry is a great item to help with longevity. Water Absorb is a useful ability that gives Jellicent a real reason to be on a rain team. With it, Jellicent recovers 25% of its health when hit by a Water-type attack, which means Jellicent's partner can spam Surf while Jellicent not only avoids damage, but in fact gains more health to live longer. A Quiet nature gives two benefits: first, it powers up Jellicent's offensive moves, ensuring maximum damage on foes, and second, it decreases Jellicent's Speed stat, making it faster under Trick Room. Special Attack investment is maximized to ensure Jellicent's attacking moves hit as hard as possible, and with the defensive EVs given, Jellicent gains enough bulk to last longer against strong special attackers, because physical attackers lose a lot of power after being burned. A 0 Speed IV gives Jellicent as low a Speed stat as possible for best use under Trick Room. Politoed makes a good partner as it is able to summon rain and fire away Surf, which gives Jellicent recovery. Jellicent loves Lightningrod supporters, such as Marowak and Seaking, because with them on the field, Jellicent has no worry of being harmed by Electric-type moves outside of Discharge. Users of Explosion or Selfdestruct, such as Snorlax, Metagross, and Lickilicky, work well with Jellicent, who is immune to those attacks. Rage Powder or Follow Me users pair well with Jellicent too, as they draw in powerful attacks that the opponent will try and use to KO Jellicent before you get to do anything with it. They can even draw in Sucker Punches so Jellicent can fire away offensive attacks. Fighting-type Fake Out supporters, such as Hitmontop, Hariyama, and Scrafty, make great teammates because they can handle Dark-types with Fighting-type STAB and make them flinch with Fake Out.

In VGC 2011, Jellicent was a menace with Water Spout; VGC 2012 is no different. Water Spout is a powerful STAB move that gets easy KOes on all who do not resist it. Shadow Ball is another STAB move, and though it doesn't nab many notable OHKOs, it does 2HKO most Latios and Latias. As Water Spout is weakened over the course of a game, however, Shadow Ball becomes the STAB move of choice after Jellicent takes a hit. Ice Beam gives Jellicent super effective coverage to hit Dragon- and Flying-types, Tornadus and Garchomp. Protect is a common utility move in VGC; it can be used to stall, keep Jellicent protected for a turn, or prevent damage from the rare Scrappy Fake Out from Kangaskhan. Water Gem gives Jellicent the power to hit the opposition hard with Water Spout. However, Sitrus Berry heals up Jellicent so Water Spout can still be strong after Jellicent takes some damage. Water Absorb grants Jellicent an immunity to Water-type attacks, and also allows it to replenish health when hit by a Water-type move. Water Absorb makes Jellicent a great fit for a rain team as well. Cursed Body is a nice option if team support means the Water-type immunity isn't needed. Modest is the nature of choice as Jellicent needs all the power it can get. It can run Timid, but the boost in Speed is small and not helpful. The EV spread makes Jellicent as fast and strong as possible. Tailwind support is needed so Jellicent can outspeed the opponent and hit hard with a full-powered Water Spout. Tornadus and Whimsicott are great teammates as they bring priority Tailwind. Fighting-types who provide Fake Out support, such as Hitmontop, Hariyama, and Scrafty, work well because they can handle Dark-types with Fighting-type STAB and make them flinch with Fake Out. As a bonus, their STAB attacks decimate Dark-type Pokemon, such as Bisharp, Hydreigon, and Tyranitar, as well as Ferrothorn, all of whom otherwise threaten Jellicent with super effective STAB moves. Jellicent also appreciates support from Rage Powder or Follow Me users, who draw in powerful attacks targeted at Jellicent. They can even draw in Sucker Punches so Jellicent can fire off attacks with impunity. In a similar vein, Lightningrod support from the likes of Marowak and Seaking lets Jellicent better stand up to foes such as Zapdos and Thundurus.

This set maximizes survivability, with moves like Scald, Will-O-Wisp, and Recover to wear down the opponent's team slowly until it can no longer threaten Jellicent. Scald is a support Jellicent's best friend, as its burn chance cripples physical attackers and deals passive damage. The bulk allows Jellicent to survive two Zen Headbutts from maximum Attack Metagross, a Crunch from Adamant Tyranitar, a Draco Meteor from Dragon Gem Latios, and any two attacks from Kingdra. The Speed EVs let Jellicent outspeed 4 Speed Tyranitar and potentially burn it before it can move.

Unlike most other Trick Room setters, Jellicent is its own sweeper, allowing its partner to support it as it sets up Trick Room immediately instead of trying to find opportunities to do so over the course of the match. Although its Special Attack is not inspiring, with Water Gem and a powerful spread move in Water Spout, Jellicent becomes a dangerous threat capable of OHKOing Landorus-T and Heatran while 2HKOing Metagross and Tyranitar. Ice Beam and Shadow Ball are secondary attacking options. The former threatens Latios and Tornadus, while the latter threatens Cresselia and other bulky Water-types. A well-positioned Jellicent will find opportunities to use Recover, while Protect is more spammable with less risk. Other Options Water Absorb is a viable ability, making Jellicent an even better check to rain teams. Taunt lets Jellicent beat Amoonguss one-on-one by preventing Spore and outhealing Giga Drain damage with Recover; once Cursed Body activates, Amoonguss is incapable of doing anything to Jellicent. Icy Wind can be used for another type of speed control. Common Partners Redirection users like Amoonguss all but ensure Trick Room goes up; Amoonguss can also incapacitate opposing Pokemon with Spore while Jellicent uses Water Spout. Scrafty also helps Trick Room go up while threatening Pokemon that trouble Jellicent like Tyranitar, Cresselia, and opposing Jellicent. Abomasnow is a useful secondary sweeper in Trick Room, as it checks Thundurus, Tornadus, and Amoonguss, which all give Jellicent problems. Checks and Counters Latios resists Water Spout and 2HKOes Jellicent with Psychic or Psyshock followed by Draco Meteor. Tyranitar's Crunch OHKOes offensive sets and does considerable damage to even the bulkiest sets. Sand chip damage simultaneously reduces the longevity of Jellicent and the efficacy of Water Spout. Amoonguss is not threatened by any of Jellicent's moves and can freely use Spore on either Jellicent or its partner. Amoonguss will more than likely move first under Trick Room and can ruin an attempt at sweeping during the precious few turns that Trick Room is active. However, a Cursed Body activation will prevent Amoonguss from damaging Jellicent. Opposing bulky Water-types like Rotom-Wash, Suicune, and Gastrodon can all beat Jellicent in different ways: Rotom-Wash with Thunderbolt, Suicune with Snarl, and Gastrodon with Storm Drain. However, with Toxic and Recover, Jellicent can defeat all of these would-be counters.

Jellicent's excellent typing combined with its natural bulk, access to two solid status moves, and reliable recovery makes it the best defensive wincon in the metagame. On top of this, it is the most reliable Trick Room setter and is a built-in answer to rain teams with Water Absorb. Will-O-Wisp can cripple common physical attackers such as Choice Band Kyurem-B and Conkeldurr, while Toxic is mainly used to beat the likes of Cresselia, Gastrodon, and opposing Jellicent by putting them on a timer. Generally, Will-O-Wisp provides more immediate support and utility, while Toxic helps Jellicent to function more as a wincon. Sitrus Berry is the preferred item, because it gives immediate healing, allowing Jellicent to avoid 2HKO's that it otherwise could not. Water Absorb makes Jellicent an even better check to rain teams. Cursed Body can be used on teams with sufficient rain answers and has a chance at disabling moves that hit Jellicent hard, such as Thundurus's Thunderbolt or Landorus-T's Earthquake. This allows Jellicent to stall it out when it couldn't otherwise. This EV spread allows Jellicent to survive Tyranitar's Crunch while maximizing Special Defense so that it can better tank common special moves such as Dragon Gem Latios's Draco Meteor or Thundurus's Thunderbolt. Notably, this spread with Sitrus Berry gives Jellicent a 75% chance to be 3HKOed by bulky Thundurus's Thunderbolt. Since Jellicent is a defensive wincon, it can oftentimes win games by itself once its threats are removed. That said, Jellicent's excellent typing can allow it to switch in easily against common metagame threats. Additionally, access to recovery allows Jellicent to stay healthy and be used throughout the game, so it may be used early to spread status. Although Jellicent can fit easily on many teams, it appreciates teammates that can threaten Tyranitar, Thundurus, Grass-types, and Dragon-types. Landorus-T is an excellent teammate due to Intimidate support and its ability to threaten Tyranitar and Thundurus. Metagross and Genesect are able to threaten Tyranitar while also matching well into Grass-types and the two most common Dragon-types, Latios and Kyurem-B. Pokemon that can benefit from Trick Room also pair well with Jellicent. Conkeldurr is a notable one, as it can threaten Tyranitar, Kyurem-B, and Thundurus. Heatran, which can benefit from Trick Room, appreciates Jellicent's ability to threaten Landorus-T, Conkeldurr, opposing Heatran, and rain while it, in return, can check Amoonguss. Finally, Amoonguss has excellent synergy with Jellicent, forming a strong defensive core. For example, Jellicent can switch into Heatran, Cresselia, and Ice-type attacks that threaten Amoonguss, while Amoonguss covers Jellicent by switching into opposing Toxic and resists Electric-type attacks. Leftovers can be used for more passive healing. Mental Herb is an option for more dedicated Trick Room teams to avoid Taunt and guarantee a Trick Room.

Jellicent might not have the imposing defensive stats of Ferrothorn, but it does have highly useful immunities to Fighting-, Water-, and Normal-type attacks, as well as resistances to Fire-, Ice-, and Bug-type ones. 100 / 70 / 105 defenses afford Jellicent enough special bulk to take on threats such as Latios, and while its base 70 Defense might seem subpar, Jellicent has access to Will-O-Wisp to make up for this. Scald is preferred over Surf for its burn chance, particularly if you are running Toxic, but Surf can be used instead for the guaranteed OHKO on Chandelure after Stealth Rock. The choice between Will-O-Wisp and Toxic is heavily influenced by the threats that you want Jellicent to check. Will-O-Wisp is preferred as it enables Jellicent to shut down Pursuit users such as Tyranitar and cripple physical attackers in general. However, with Toxic, Jellicent can cripple bulky threats such as Latias and Politoed, as well as opposing Jellicent. Recover gives Jellicent valuable recovery, enabling it to stall out anything which cannot 2HKO it in conjunction with Will-O-Wisp or Toxic. Taunt shuts down walls such as Chansey and Skarmory, preventing them from healing and protecting Jellicent from crippling status such as Toxic. As an added plus, Jellicent is immune to Seismic Toss and can heal off the little damage these walls inflict with Recover, allowing it to stall them out with ease. The EVs are mainly put into HP and Defense to give Jellicent optimum physical bulk, with a Bold nature further boosting Jellicent's Defense; this ensures that Genesect will not get a Special Attack boost upon switching in. The rest of the EVs are simply dumped in Special Defense. Water Absorb is the ability of choice for an additional Water-type immunity; Cursed Body is too situational and unreliable for it to merit use. A specially defensive EV spread can be used to better tank special attacks if you seek to use Jellicent solely as a special tank. Shadow Ball can be used as the STAB option to deal heavy damage to Starmie, but Water-type attacks have better neutral coverage, not to mention the fact that Jellicent will be unable to wear down walls such as Skarmory and Chansey. Ice Beam is also an option to deal heavy damage to Dragon-types such as Dragonite, but Jellicent cannot stay in and attack unless it burns them on the switch with Will-O-Wisp. While Jellicent serves as a utility counter to specific threats that its team has trouble dealing with, it needs some support itself to be effective. Pairing it with Ferrothorn to create the famed FerroCent defensive core is a great idea, as the two have excellent synergy; Jellicent can spinblock and switch in on Fire- and Fighting-type attacks all day long, while Ferrothorn can set up entry hazards and sponge Electric- and Grass-type attacks. Skarmory makes a good teammate as well, as it can set up Spikes and easily check physical threats that trouble Jellicent, such as Excadrill and Dragonite. A special wall such as Chansey can help Jellicent immensely by soaking up Electric- and Grass-type special attacks that give it a lot of trouble, luring Fighting-type attacks for it to switch into, and providing Aromatherapy support to keep it free of status. Providing Jellicent with Toxic Spikes support is also a good idea, as this allows it to run Will-O-Wisp while maintaining the ability to stall out bulky Water-types such as Politoed. Good offensive partners for Jellicent are those that can switch into and take out the Pokemon which threaten it. Lum Berry Dragonite walls Breloom cold and can OHKO it with Fire Punch. A strong Pursuit user such as Tyranitar checks Chandelure, which can trap and eliminate Jellicent. Raikou and Zapdos make fine checks to Electric-types such as Rotom-W and Thundurus, as they can switch into Electric-type attacks and deal heavy damage with a STAB Thunderbolt of their own. A bulky Ground-type such as Mamoswine is also recommended to switch into stray Volt Switches.
