Overheat is Magmar's most powerful move, denting many unexpecting fast targets like Persian, Choice Scarf Krokorok, and Electabuzz, although it has to be careful of becoming setup fodder after dropping its Special Attack. Focus Blast 2HKOes many common switch-ins like Gigalith and Scraggy after slight chip damage. Psychic does well at safely picking off targets like Pignite, Dustox, and Swalot; it also has a high chance to 2HKO all three after Stealth Rock. Hidden Power Ice catches Vibrava off guard with an OHKO after minimal chip damage while accurately finishing off Grass-types like Servine and Jumpluff. Hidden Power Grass hits Water- and Ground-types for big damage like Simipour, Frogadier, and Marshtomp. Vital Spirit is better for safely switching into Jumpluff's Sleep Powder and Meowstic's Yawn, but Flame Body can be helpful for catching U-turn users like Persian and Dustox, but the risk isn't usually worth the low reward chance. Magmar works well on balance or offensive teams looking for speed control and a strong revenge killer. Grass-types like Servine, Gourgeist-L, and Ivysaur do well at taking hits from common switch-ins to Magmar like Politoed, Gigalith, and Carbink. The likes of Simipour, Servine, and Swoobat are appreciated as teammates, since they can break down special walls like Duosion and Swalot, leading the way for Magmar to clean. Entry hazard removers like Dustox and Vibrava make for good teammates, since they can limit the chip damage Magmar takes. Barring Psychic, Pignite switches into Magmar with ease, so teammates like Carbink and Hippopotas are needed to check it.

Choice Specs Magmar is a threatening wallbreaker in ORAS ZU with its great offensive typing and wide coverage movepool. Fire Blast 2HKOes Bulk Up Scraggy and defensive pivot Duosion after Stealth Rock. Overheat is Magmar's strongest attack, able to OHKO specially defensive Meganium and bulky Servine, which Fire Blast does not. However, Overheat often forces Magmar to switch out the next turn because it can be used as setup fodder at -2. Focus Blast picks up the OHKO on Gigalith while also being a better neutral move against the Water-types and Vibrava. Psychic is specifically for Pignite, since it shrugs off all of Magmar's other moves. Hidden Power Grass can be used to OHKO Marshtomp and Whiscash, as well as 2HKOing Politoed after Stealth Rock damage. Hidden Power Ice is a more niche option instead if Magmar wants to catch Vibrava off guard and OHKO it, but Fire Blast can 2HKO it after some slight chip damage. Vital Spirit is preferred over Flame Body so it can switch in against Sleep Powder from Jumpluff and Yawn from Meowstic, although Flame Body has the niche of punishing U-turn from Dustox or Persian. Magmar works well on teams looking for a special wallbreaker so that partners like Simipour, Servine, and Vanilluxe can sweep. Entry hazard removers like Vibrava and Dustox are appreciated as teammates to give Magmar more opportunities to enter the field, since they often pivot out against targets that Magmar preys on like Bronzor and Ivysaur. Magmar drops to any hit from Water-types like Politoed, Frogadier, and Simipour, so teammates like Servine, Meganium, and Gogoat are appreciated to handle them. Normal-resistant Pokemon like Gigalith, Carbink, and Lairon make good teammates, since they can take on Persian and Furfrou, which would otherwise easily take out Magmar. Specially defensive Swalot can take hits with ease and hit back hard with Earthquake, so Magmar appreciates being paired with the likes of Duosion and Lunatone to help switch into it. Revenge killers like Furfrou, Persian and Sawsbuck can pick it off without much difficulty, so teammates like Bronzor and Swalot do well at punishing them.

However, Flame Charge can be used instead to give Magmar the ability to act as an late-game cleaner, since it can outspeed fast attackers and Choice Scarf users like Furfrou and Krokorok, respectively. Vital Spirit is preferred over Flame Body to switch in against Sleep Powder from Jumpluff and Yawn from Meowstic; burning foes with Flame Body isn't typically worth the potential damage Magmar takes, since it already gets chipped enough with entry hazards. Magmar does well on balance or offensive teams looking for a special attacker that can take down a lot of popular walls like Dustox, Klang, and Meganium. Water-types like Simipour and Frogadier appreciate Magmar's ability to threaten these walls, since they struggle to take them down. In return, they can weaken Gigalith and Carbink for Magmar. Entry hazard removers like Vibrava and Dustox are appreciated as teammates to give Magmar more opportunities to enter the field. These removal options often use U-turn against targets that Magmar preys on like Bronzor and Ivysaur. Magmar is outsped and OHKOed by Frogadier and Simipour, which the likes of Duosion, Seaking, and Politoed can help switch into. Fast attackers like Simisage and Furfrou can help make up for Magmar's lack of Speed. Defensive pivot Duosion can shrug off Magmar's attacks and doesn't mind Toxic, so teammates like Scraggy and Klang are needed to help take it on. Magmar really wants to be paired with Carbink or Hippopotas, since Pignite switches into Magmar easily on and can hit it hard with STAB Superpower.

This set is Magmar's best way to set itself apart from the likes of Charizard, as it takes advantage of its Eviolite-boosted bulk and Vital Spirit. Magmar is played as a bit of a bulky offensive supporter, providing a decent switch-in to Grass-types and Jynx and OHKOing in return with Flamethrower. Focus Blast is Magmar's primary coverage move, denting Rock-types such as Regirock and providing solid overall coverage. Hidden Power Grass is Magmar's best option against bulky Water-types such as Alomomola and Seismitoad; it is also notable for damaging the likes of Carracosta and Golem without Focus Blast's miss chance. Finally, Will-O-Wisp adds a bit to Magmar's supportive qualities, burning physical attackers and patching up Magmar's lackluster Defense. On the other hand, Substitute can be used to help ease prediction, but keep in mind that Magmar often wears itself down rather quickly between both Stealth Rock and Substitute damage. The given EV spread accomplishes a few things. Firstly, 60 Speed EVs are used to outspeed minimum Speed Miltank. 200 HP EVs give Magmar a total of 321 HP, letting it switch in to Stealth Rock four times without dying. Finally, the rest is put into Special Attack with a Modest nature to power up Magmar's attacks. This EV spread is fairly customizable; for example, an alternative spread of 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe coupled with a Timid nature maximizes Magmar's offensive potential, letting Magmar pose as a larger overall threat. However, this detracts from its bulk, which is its main selling point over Charizard. Likewise, a bulkier spread with investment in Special Defense allows Magmar to tank a fair few more hits; sadly, this does not work well with both Magmar's lack of recovery and poor defensive typing, and it loses power by doing so. Fire Blast and Lava Plume can be considered over Flamethrower as a Fire-type STAB, with the former boasting a higher Base Power and the latter having a higher chance to burn the opposition. However, Flamethrower is the most consistent out of the three. Finally, Hidden Power Ice and Rock are two potential options over Hidden Power Grass, as they both hit Altaria for super effective damage, and the latter also scores an OHKO on Charizard. However, hitting Water-types is far more important, making Hidden Power Grass the superior option most of the time. As Magmar lacks reliable recovery, Wish passers are highly recommended to help make up for that. Alomomola is unarguably the best candidate for this role, as it can pass massive Wishes to Magmar while also benefiting greatly from Magmar's ability to remove Grass-types from the field. In general, most Pokemon that dislike Grass-types enjoy Magmar's services; Water-, Fighting-, and Ground-types are just a few examples of Pokemon that appreciate Magmar's support, and they can also break down the Rock-types that Magmar struggles to beat.

Fire Blast is Magmar's go-to STAB option for its surprisingly high power and strong neutral coverage in the tier, but Overheat can also be used for even more power. Magmar's wide coverage allows it to bypass plenty of Fire-resistant foes. Thunder Punch is able to OHKO Mantine, while Hidden Power Grass covers other common Fire-resistant Pokemon such as Relicanth, Rhydon, Quagsire, and Gastrodon. Mach Punch can pick off faster Pokemon such as Sneasel. Substitute is an alternative to ease prediction while avoiding potential status to make Magmar extremely threatening mid- and late-game. Flame Body can cripple faster attackers like Purugly trying to finish it off. Magmar lacks coverage for Gabite and is often checked by Purugly, making bulky Grass-types like Tangela and Bellossom solid partners. Spikes support from lead Glalie can make Magmar more threatening mid-game, as its coverage becomes more punishing, for example against Muk. Purugly is also a nice partner, as it can draw in Metang and Tangela for Magmar with U-turn, and it can clean up once Magmar has punched a few holes in teams. Similarly, Choice Scarf Gabite can freely click its STAB moves once Magmar beats Steel- and Grass-types. Magmar can also run Choice Scarf itself with Focus Blast and Sleep Talk instead of Thunder Punch and Mach Punch, but Monferno often outclasses it here given its access to U-turn. Ampharos can cover Magmar well against Water-types like Golduck, lure Gabite in to nail it with Hidden Power Ice, and potentially paralyze faster foes like Purugly with Static.

Cross Chop will only 2HKO Blissey and Snorlax if it lands a critical hit or is backed up with lots of Spikes support, but it can at least negate Curse boosts and finish off weakened ones. The recommended spread beats out Adamant Heracross, but if running Hidden Power Ice, use 204 Speed EVs and a Hasty nature to outspeed Salamence. Good Speed numbers to hit are 270 and 300. Aside from this, maximize Special Attack, then put the rest into Attack to power up Cross Chop or Focus Punch.

Magmar is one of the best offensive Pokemon in GSC NU. It can be difficult to wall without Ninetales due to its excellent coverage, letting it hit a lot of the tier quite hard. Magmar also brings decent defensive utility to its team thanks to its usable Special Defense, which means Magmar is notably only 4HKOed by Xatu's Psychic. Magmar is also quite fast for the tier, outpacing threats like Kingler and Hitmonlee. However, Magmar does face competition from other Fire-types that bring more to a team; Ninetales brings huge defensive potential, and Rapidash is an incredibly fast lead with Hypnosis. Magmar's STAB Fire Blast threatens to 2HKO a large portion of the tier, notably Xatu, and can be powered up even more with Charcoal. Thunder Punch damages Water-types such as Octillery and Kingler quite a lot and gives Magmar coverage for Flying-types that won't miss unlike Fire Blast. Hidden Power Grass can be used instead, as it OHKOes Graveler, can 2HKO Sudoowodo with Spikes up and additional minor chip damage, and can reduce prediction between deciding to use Thunder Punch to hit Octillery or Fire Blast to hit Dugtrio while barely being weaker than Thunder Punch against Octillery; however, it comes at the cost of significantly reducing Magmar's DVs and losing out on Thunder Punch's ability to hit Flying-types with perfect accuracy. Cross Chop heavily threatens Dewgong, damages Wigglytuff and Dunsparce harder than Fire Blast, and has a chance to land a critical hit through the Normal-types' Curse boosts. Lastly, Sunny Day powers up Magmar's Fire Blast to a staggering degree, notably 2HKOing even the incredibly bulky Dewgong while lowering the power of Water moves and reducing the accuracy of Thunders aimed at Magmar, even allowing Magmar to become a solid answer to Dewgong if it can gain entry on a usage of Ice Beam or Rest. Hidden Power Ground can be used instead to hit opposing Fire-types hard while also 2HKOing Chinchou after Spikes damage, though it still cannot 3HKO the faster and RestTalk-using Ninetales without Spikes. Thief can also be chosen in order to weaken bulky Pokemon like Octillery, Ninetales, and Xatu, making it easier for Magmar itself to wallbreak later in the game while also supporting teammates, though it makes it significantly harder to switch Magmar into battle with Spikes up due to lack of Leftovers before using Thief. Magmar pairs well with Water-types, most notably Chinchou, which beats the Water- and Fire-types that can beat Magmar one-on-one; in return, Magmar beats the Grass-types that wall Chinchou. Pokemon with Explosion or Self-Destruct such as Weezing and Sudowoodo can try to take out bulky Water- and Fire-types that give Magmar trouble. Magmar also pairs well with other fast offensive Pokemon such as Fearow, Xatu, and Primeape to overwhelm the opponent's defensive core with Spikes down, as they can force the defensive Pokemon to switch around and take chip damage, which can leave the opponent's team weakened enough to be cleaned up. Finally, Magmar makes for a very good recipient of Baton Pass, especially Growth passes from Flareon.
