The given EVs and a Jolly nature ensure Roaring Moon's Speed is boosted in sunlight, letting it get the jump on crucial threats like unboosted non-Choice Scarf Koraidon and Miraidon and threaten them with its STAB Dragon Claw. The remaining 36 Special Defense EVs improve Roaring Moon's chances to survive Iron Bundle's Ice Beam after Stealth Rock while giving it a chance to survive Overheat in sun from Modest Choice Specs Chi-Yu. Tera Dark strengthens Roaring Moon's Crunch to the point where it always 2HKOs physically defensive Corviknight and always 3HKOs Dondozo while easing predictions with Earthquake against Garganacl. Tera Steel lets Roaring Moon resist otherwise super effective Ice-, Fairy-, and Dragon-type attacks from the likes of Iron Bundle, Flutter Mane, Koraidon, and Miraidon. Tera Steel also powers up Roaring Moon's Iron Head. Tera Fairy allows Roaring Moon to resist Fighting-type attacks while becoming immune to Dragon-type attacks, letting it defeat Koraidon and Iron Valiant, both of which outspeed and threaten to OHKO Roaring Moon otherwise. Roaring Moon loves the support of Koraidon, as it activates Roaring Moon's Protosynthesis via Orichalcum Pulse and reliably threatens Pokemon such as Koraidon, Miraidon, and Ice-types like Chien-Pao and Iron Bundle. In return, Roaring Moon threatens non-Terastallized Skeledirge. Koraidon and Roaring Moon both struggle with defensive Great Tusk, so they can team up with Iron Bundle and Chien-Pao, which threaten all Great Tusk sets. Iron Bundle and Chien-Pao also threaten Koraidon and Miraidon, with Iron Bundle naturally outspeeding non-Choice Scarf variants and Chien-Pao threatening them with priority Ice Shard. Defensive Great Tusk and Ting-Lu also work well with Roaring Moon, as they can set up entry hazards for Roaring Moon's team and check Koraidon and Miraidon, respectively. Great Tusk in particular can use Rapid Spin, giving Roaring Moon more opportunities to switch in, while Ting-Lu can phaze threatening boosters like Espathra with Whirlwind and set up Spikes. Specially defensive Corviknight can check Flutter Mane and Iron Bundle, both of which outspeed and threaten Roaring Moon, and can Defog hazards away, giving Roaring Moon more opportunities to switch in. Roaring Moon can easily pivot into Chi-Yu, which takes advantage of the sun set by Koraidon and threatens walls like Great Tusk, Corviknight, Ting-Lu, and Terastallized Skeledirge. Gholdengo also makes for a decent partner, as not only does it have perfect defensive synergy with Roaring Moon, but it can also reliably block all common forms of hazard removal. This allows Roaring Moon’s team to keep up hazards, in particular Spikes, for it to eventually break down walls.

With the Speed investment, Roaring Moon outspeeds Timid Chi-Yu and Landorus as well as Modest Regieleki with Protosynthesis activated, and the Attack EVs allow Tera Flying Acrobatics to almost always OHKO the Urshifu formes. Finally, the bulk investment allows Terastallized Roaring Moon to survive two Astral Barrages from Calyrex-S, two Heat Waves from Chi-Yu, or Tera Water Surging Strikes from Urshifu-R. Tera Flying allows it to threaten an OHKO on Amoonguss, Rillaboom, and Ogerpon-H with STAB Acrobatics. Roaring Moon has seen numerous top placements alongside Calm Mind Kyogre, which appreciates its fast Tailwind and Knock Off support, ability to hit Grass-types super effectively with Acrobatics, and capability to check Calyrex-S. It has also been used on Calyrex-S and Galarian Weezing compositions to help them work better against mirror matchups and as a fast Tailwind setter for Speed-invested Calyrex-I. Roaring Moon has a very hard time taking on Miraidon structures, with Choice Specs Miraidon being able to OHKO Roaring Moon with Dazzling Gleam before it Terastallizes, Electro Drift or Volt Switch after it Terastallizes, and Draco Meteor regardless. Roaring Moon also struggles with Iron Hands, as Iron Hands is able to take a hit and OHKO it in return. Speed Booster Energy Flutter Mane outspeeds Roaring Moon and threatens to OHKO it with Moonblast or reduce its Speed with Icy Wind and Thunder Wave. Roaring Moon also struggles defensively against Chien-Pao and Calyrex-I, which are able to hit it super effectively even if it's Terastallized, and Zamazenta-C, which OHKOs Roaring Moon with Body Press and does not take much damage from Tera Flying Acrobatics in return. Roaring Moon’s weakness to Zamazenta-C and Miraidon makes Landorus one of its premier partners for its ability to OHKO both Restricted Pokemon. Additionally, Roaring Moon appreciates strong offensive pieces such as Urshifu-R and Ogerpon-H that are able to handle Flutter Mane, Chien-Pao, and Calyrex-I when paired with its Tailwind or offensive support. Roaring Moon can also function alongside more defensive pieces such as Rillaboom, Incineroar, and Amoonguss that provide support in Fake Out, Intimidate, or Rage Powder and Spore, helping Roaring Moon to more effectively set Tailwind and spread damage safely.

Roost allows Roaring Moon to retain HP and set up further if needed, while Taunt can be used to stop foes such as Mandibuzz and Toxapex from neutering Roaring Moon with status moves, such as Toxic and Haze. Mandibuzz is another defensive option that pairs well with Roaring Moon, as it is the only consistent hazard removal that Dark teams have access to, which prevents Roaring Moon from getting chipped down over time while also providing pivoting through U-turn to allow Roaring Moon's safe entry if need be. Alolan Muk can be paired with Roaring Moon to help deal with strong Fairy-types such as Primarina and Choice Specs Iron Valiant. Bisharp is a necessary teammate, as it is able to handle Fairy-types that can neutralize Roaring Moon before a boost such as Flutter Mane and Hatterene, while Roaring Moon can deal with Fire-type Pokemon that threaten Bisharp such as non-Air Balloon Heatran and unboosted Gouging Fire. Lastly, Weavile can help weaken Ground-type foes that can wall Roaring Moon such as Hippowdon and Great Tusk while also revenge killing Dragonite and Meowscarada with Ice Shard, thus giving Roaring Moon more room to set up.

Choice Scarf allows Roaring Moon to outspeed and defeat threatening foes to Dragon-type teams such as Choice Specs Greninja and Flutter Mane. Knock Off aids Roaring Moon in removing items from Pokemon that can reliably switch into it such as Heavy-Duty Boots from Corviknight and Leftovers from Great Tusk while also obliterating Gholdengo as well as a prominent threat in Flutter Mane. Iron Head allows Roaring Moon to combat Fairy-type Pokemon that are able to switch into both of its STAB moves such as Iron Valiant, Enamorus, and Alolan Ninetales. Archaludon is a great defensive teammate for Roaring Moon, as it is able to sponge physical attacks from Ogerpon-H, Meowscarada, and Scizor, while Roaring Moon is able to take out threatening special attackers that can take advantage of Archaludon like Gholdengo. Archaludon also provides entry hazard support in Stealth Rock while also threatening Bisharp and Meowscarada with Body Press. Dragapult is another offensive teammate capable of spreading status in Will-O-Wisp, neutering threats such as offensive Great Tusk and Hisuian Samurott, which alleviates pressure on Roaring Moon's breaking capabilities. Hisuian Goodra is another defensive teammate that pairs well with Roaring Moon, as it can readily take special Ice- and Fairy-type attacks from speedier threats like Choice Scarf Greninja and Choice Scarf Flutter Mane while also being able to phaze setup sweepers such as Dragon Dance Dragapult with Dragon Tail.

However, running Acrobatics comes at the cost of dropping Breaking Swipe and weakening Roaring Moon's longevity and value as a support piece. Knock Off, a powerful STAB move that comes off of Roaring Moon's high base Attack, serves as the primary damage-dealing option on Roaring Moon, capable of threatening massive damage on super effective targets like Gholdengo and Sinistcha, as well as frail neutral targets like Tornadus. More importantly, Knock Off allows Roaring Moon to remove items from opposing targets, which is extremely situationally powerful. Protect is most commonly run as the last move on Roaring Moon, a powerful defensive option that often enables Roaring Moon to survive long enough to set Tailwind a second time. Protect, already a great move in doubles, is particularly strong on a Pokemon like Roaring Moon, as it allows Roaring Moon to position more easily and increases its ability to actually set up Tailwind. However, Roaring Moon can dedicate this moveslot to Taunt, a disruptive tool that affords Roaring Moon a better matchup into Trick Room teams and prevents opposing setup sweepers from boosting out of control. Taunt is particularly strong on Roaring Moon thanks to its high Speed, which allows it to Taunt basically anything in the tier, besides Gholdengo and opposing Prankster Pokemon like Tornadus, before they move. Unlike Prankster Tornadus, it is able to Taunt Dark-types. While running Taunt does give up the defensive benefits of Protect, Taunt allows Roaring Moon to have better matchups into teams that are better prepared for the more standard set and helps patch up these matchups. Tera Ghost allows Roaring Moon to become immune to Fighting-type attacks as well as Fake Out. This is very strong defensively, as it keeps none of Roaring Moon's original weaknesses and gives Roaring Moon the option to dodge Fake Out on important turns, granting more ways to effectively set Tailwind and swing games in its favor. Tera Fairy provides many of the same defensive benefits as Tera Ghost while not being weak to Dark-type moves like Chien-Pao's Sucker Punch and becoming immune to Dragon-type damage from opposing threats such as Regidrago, a Pokemon that can be troublesome when paired with Tornadus, as well as an immunity to opposing Breaking Swipe users like Gouging Fire and opposing Roaring Moon. However, Tera Fairy gives up the ability to dodge Fake Out and gives Roaring Moon weaknesses to common attacks like Make it Rain from Gholdengo and Sludge Bomb from Landorus. Lastly, Tera Flying is generally reserved for sets running Acrobatics, as it grants a powerful boost to Acrobatics that allows Roaring Moon to pick up OHKOs on the Ogerpon formes. However, Tera Flying is not as great defensively; though it provides a Fighting resistance, it maintains Roaring Moon's Ice weakness. The given EV spread allows Roaring Moon to live common super effective physical hits after a Breaking Swipe, including Chien-Pao's Icicle Crash and Iron Hands's Close Combat, as well as living +0 Attack Iron Hands's Drain Punch, while maximizing its Speed. Generally, Roaring Moon gets more value out of defensive investment rather than Attack investment, as increasing its survivability better enables it to last longer and improve its chance at setting Tailwind more than once, whereas Roaring Moon is generally capable of dealing respectable damage with Knock Off into important targets even with minimal investment. Roaring Moon pairs well with most DOU-relevant Pokemon that like to be played under Tailwind, but in particular, Roaring Moon is commonly paired with special attackers like Landorus, Meteor Beam Glimmora, and Gholdengo that appreciate Tailwind support and the utility of Breaking Swipe and Knock Off, allowing them to more easily get into positions to take over games. Landorus in particular helps against opposing Okidogi and Iron Hands. Setup options like Nasty Plot Gholdengo, Nasty Plot Galarian Moltres, and even Quiver Dance Volcarona can be used effectively with Roaring Moon, as its Breaking Swipe generates many opportunities for them to set up. Ogerpon-W and Ogerpon-H also serve as good partners for Roaring Moon, being able to both support Roaring Moon and its partners with Follow Me support, which ensures in many positions that Tailwind gets set up, as well as their ability to assume a more offensive role after Tailwind is up. Fake Out users like Iron Hands and Incineroar also serve as solid partners for Roaring Moon, strengthening Roaring Moon's matchup into common Ice-type attackers like Chien-Pao and Kyurem that can normally be problematic. Diancie also serves as a solid partner for semi-Trick Room compositions, adding a Trick Room component and powerful Rock-type damage that can also strengthen matchups into opposing physical offense teams. Roaring Moon can struggle to make progress into Tera Fairy Pokemon like Calm Mind Raging Bolt. Roaring Moon can also struggle after being forced out, as after it loses its Booster Energy, it becomes much slower and more susceptible to opposing speed control and threats like Chien-Pao. Common threats like Chien-Pao, Okidogi, and Iron Hands can still pose an issue for Roaring Moon in spite of Breaking Swipe. Covert Cloak Okidogi and Clear Amulet Iron Hands can be particularly annoying because they completely ignore Breaking Swipe's Attack drops. Finally, Pokemon like Diancie and Kingambit take minimal damage from all of Roaring Moon's common attacks; the former is immune to Breaking Swipe, while the latter thoroughly punishes Breaking Swipe with its Defiant ability.

Tera Flying boosts the power of Acrobatics, notably allowing Roaring Moon to OHKO uninvested Great Tusk before a Dragon Dance and Dauntless Shield Zamazenta after a Dragon Dance. The last two are also notable for being the tier's best entry hazard removal options, helping to shore up Roaring Moon's relative weakness to entry hazards. Powerful offensive threats like Great Tusk, Latios, and Gholdengo all appreciate Roaring Moon's ability to aggressively scout the opponent's move and pivot them in safely, with the last two especially appreciating Roaring Moon's ability to remove Assault Vest from opposing Manaphy ​and Swampert.

Sword of Ruin provides the most damage and impacts all of Roaring Moon's moves, while Tough Claws retains its power against opposing Sword of Ruin users, namely Zamazenta, and does not reveal itself on the switch in. Roaring Moon fits best on balance and offensive teams that can take advantage of its power, Speed, and pivoting abilities and may also appreciate its defensive profile to help slow down certain key threats like Deoxys-S, Hisuian Electrode, and Gholdengo. Due to its frequent pivoting and lack of recovery, Roaring Moon abhors entry hazards, making Corviknight, Iron Treads, or Great Tusk nearly required as a teammate. Special walls like Manaphy can switch into special attacks aimed at Roaring Moon and appreciate its resistances to Electric, Ghost, and Psychic taking some of the pressure off of them as well. On the flip side, Roaring Moon forces frequent switches and removes Heavy-Duty Boots with Knock Off, making hazard-stacking teammates like Sandy Shocks, Great Tusk, and Skarmory excellent options. Fluffy walls, especially Corviknight, can give Roaring Moon a hard time, so strong Fire-type teammates like Cinderace, Iron Moth, and Ceruledge are excellent options. Roaring Moon does not appreciate bulky Fighting-types like Great Tusk, Iron Hands, and Zamazenta, so it appreciates teammates that threaten them like Scream Tail and Deoxys-S. Roaring Moon pairs extremely well with other offensive pivots; it can team with special pivots like Iron Moth and Latios to bring each other in in favorable matchups or with physical pivots like Meowscarada and Cinderace to wear down their shared checks.

Magic Guard Roaring Moon is a fantastic pivot and item remover that has great offensive and defensive prowess alongside stellar longevity. Magic Guard allows Roaring Moon to augment its defensive profile by avoiding all indirect chip damage, such as from Rocky Helmet and entry hazards, which would otherwise hamper it. Magic Guard also has the added benefit of countering Prankster Pecharunt, with Roaring Moon's Dark typing blocking Parting Shot and Magic Guard preventing Toxic chip damage from Malignant Chain. U-turn lets Roaring Moon keep up the momentum against walls that usually switch into it, such as Ferrothorn, Skarmory, and Archaludon. Knock Off, aside from dealing with Ghost-types like Blacephalon and Gengar, also strips switch-ins like Staraptor, Rotom-W, and Corviknight of their items, making it easier for Dragon teams to overwhelm these defensive Pokemon late-game. Roaring Moon is unfortunately still outsped by even faster Choice Scarf users like Greninja and Meowscarada, or Swift Swim and Sand Rush Pokemon like Barraskewda and Excadrill, so switch-ins to these threats like Hisuian Goodra, Archaludon, or Mega Latias are appreciated. Archaludon and Hisuian Goodra also help a lot against a plethora of threats, with Archaludon providing Stealth Rock while weathering physical assaults from Mega Altaria, Weavile, and opposing Roaring Moon. Whereas Hisuian Goodra takes minimal damage from Tapu Lele and SubRoost Kyurem while also having the ability to phaze out threats Roaring Moon struggles to handle like Autotomize Celesteela or Volcarona. Kyurem and Z-move Kommo-o wear down the defensive cores of Water, Flying, Poison, Steel, and Normal teams which can provide an opening for Roaring Moon to clean up these teams late-game. Mega Altaria and Mega Latias love Roaring Moon removing Mega Diancie and Iron Valiant, as this opens up an opportunity for them to overwhelm Fairy and Fighting teams late-game. EV Spreads 220 Atk / 36 Def / 252 Spe with Jolly: This spread gives Roaring Moon a Speed boost from Protosynthesis, making it a good revenge killer. 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe with Jolly: This simple spread makes Protosynthesis boost Attack, potentially letting Roaring Moon 2HKO Skeledirge with Acrobatics. 252 HP / 4 Atk / 20 Def / 204 SpD / 28 Spe with Careful: This spread takes a slower, bulkier approach to boosting, getting a Special Defense boost from Protosynthesis and outspeeding Dragapult after one Dragon Dance. This spread is best used with Roost, and Taunt is also highly recommended to get past Skeledirge.

While Roaring Moon is most known for using Booster Energy and Acrobatics, other Tera Types and moves can let it defeat a different set of threats and be used earlier in the game. Scale Shot: While lowering Roaring Moon's Defense makes it even more vulnerable to priority, the Speed boost can lead to some surprising sweeps when picking off foes. It also has a shot of OHKOing offensive Dragonite through Multiscale. Other Options Outrage: This is by far Roaring Moon's strongest attack, though being locked in can easily lead to counter play via Terastallization and Fairy-types. Tera Types Steel: Tera Steel's good matchup against Fairy- and Dragon-types makes it a prime candidate. Fire: With Tera Fire, Roaring Moon gains a useful resistance to Bullet Punch and cooks Scizor, Tinkaton, and Corviknight with Tera Blast. Fairy: Tera Fairy is an excellent answer to faster Dragon-types such Dragapult and Choice Scarf Garchomp and gives Roaring Moon a vital Fighting-type resistance against otherwise troublesome foes like Great Tusk, Iron Hands, and Annihilape. Ghost: Roaring Moon gains a useful Extreme Speed and Mach Punch immunity, making Dragonite and Breloom far less problematic. This is especially useful if using Scale Shot. Items Life Orb: While making Roaring Moon more vulnerable to priority, the reliable damage output means Roaring Moon doesn't have to set up to deal massive damage. Booster Energy: Beyond making Roaring Moon more suited for late-game sweeping, Booster Energy is perfect for making opponents think its the more common Acrobatics set. Loaded Dice: When using Scale Shot, Loaded Dice is a strong consideration, letting +1 Roaring Moon always OHKO offensive Dragonite and almost always OHKO Breloom with Scale Shot. Lum Berry: Lum Berry is perfect for taking advantage of Pokemon that are likely to inflict status on Roaring Moon, such as Tinkaton, Rotom-W, and Umbreon. EV Spreads 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe: This classic spread will give Roaring Moon an Attack boost from Protosynthesis. 220 Atk / 36 Def / 252 Spe: This is the spread to use if a Speed Boost from Protosynthesis is needed.

Assault Vest: Roaring Moon makes for a great bulky using of Assault Vest, being able to easily take on Iron Bundle and Flutter Mane when Terastallized into the correct type. With Jaw Lock, Roost, and Taunt, Roaring Moon is capable of severely punishing defensive answers to it, which is worth the risk of trapping itself. Dragon Dance: If trapping a very passive foe such as Hippowdon, Roaring Moon can threaten to get to +6, slicing through teams like a hot knife through butter! Substitute: Substitute works great with Toxic Spikes support, giving Roaring Moon a means to rack up Toxic damage. Earthquake: This prevents Roaring Moon from being walled by Kingambit. U-turn: U-turn gives Roaring Moon a way to switch out of bad Jaw Lock matchups, reducing its risk greatly without using up an item slot. Other Options Acrobatics: If using Booster Energy and Tera Flying, Acrobatics is far more powerful than Jaw Lock, punishing Annihilape and Great Tusk in particular. Tera Types Poison: In addition to providing a vital resistance to Fairy- and Fighting-type attacks, Tera Poison lets Roaring Moon freely switch into Toxic, which would ruin this set otherwise. Fairy: Taking on Dragon- and Fighting-type attacks makes Fairy a reliable Tera type. Flying: Tera Flying grants Roaring Moon safety from Garganacl and Dondozo's Fissure and pairs nicely with Acrobatics. Don't Use Ghost: Tera Ghost is tempting to allow Roaring Moon to switch out of Jaw Lock, but be warned: you must Terastallize only on the turn after using Jaw Lock, because otherwise, the trapping effect will fail to activate if using Jaw Lock as a Ghost-type! Items Leftovers: If using Dragon Dance, the residual recovery makes setting up multiple Dragon Dances much easier. Shed Shell: Shed Shell lets Roaring Moon switch out of Jaw Lock, massively reducing the risk. Booster Energy: This turns Tera Flying Acrobatics into a powerful form of offense. Heavy-Duty Boots: Making Roaring Moon immune to Toxic Spikes gives it much more flexibility against stall teams with Toxic Spike setters such as Clodsire and Toxapex. Protective Pads: Protective Pads will guard Roaring Moon against Volcarona's Flame Body and Rocky Helmet for otherwise good trapping targets such as Dondozo and Clodsire. The former two can ruin Roaring Moon with Encore.
