Focus Sash allows Urshifu-R to be played much more aggressively in front of threats like Raging Bolt, Rillaboom, and the Ogerpon formes, due to the guaranteed survival from one attack. Tera Stellar may be used instead of Tera Water, giving Urshifu-R a damage boost to Close Combat that allows it to OHKO non-bulky Ogerpon-W while still boosting Surging Strikes and Aqua Jet. Tera Stellar does, however, prevent multiple Water-type moves from being boosted. These boosts enable Urshifu-R to OHKO Chien-Pao and bulkless Ogerpon-C and Ogerpon-H with Surging Strikes.

Choice Scarf Urshifu-R is an excellent revenge killer and cleaner against many offensive Pokemon. The Choice Scarf lets Urshifu-R outspeed the dangerous Calyrex-S, meaning that the vast majority of offensive teams get naturally outsped and destroyed by its powerful Surging Strikes or Close Combat, and with Unseen Fist, these teams cannot even attempt to outplay it with Protect. U-turn lets Urshifu-R use the threat of its powerful attacks to pivot out, letting its team maintain momentum even when the opponent tries to switch around its attacks while also letting it 2HKO Ogerpon-W. Aqua Jet lets Urshifu-R bypass opposing speed control and priority moves when revenge killing an opposing threat, whereas Coaching makes partner Calyrex-I a significantly bigger threat. Tera Water powers up its Surging Strikes, letting it destroy foes like Calyrex-S. It also lets Urshifu-R shed its weaknesses to Psychic and Fairy, letting it potentially take attacks like Flutter Mane's Dazzling Gleam and Calyrex-S's Psychic-type moves. Rillaboom's Grassy Glide bypasses Urshifu-R's great Speed and threatens it with an OHKO. Miraidon and Raging Bolt both threaten Urshifu-R with their powerful Electro Drift and Thunderclap, respectively. Koraidon, Groudon, and even Tornadus can set up sun, weakening Surging Strikes so that Urshifu-R can be played around more easily. Additionally, a good way to subvert Urshifu-R's great Speed is with opposing speed control. Users include Tailwind Tornadus, Icy Wind Flutter Mane, and Trick Room Calyrex-I or Farigiraf. Urshifu-R's best partner is Tornadus, as it can support Urshifu-R with Tailwind to counter opposing speed control, Rain Dance to boost the power of Urshifu-R's Water-type STAB moves, and Bleakwind Storm to threaten opposing Grass-types like Rillaboom that would threaten Urshifu-R. It can also use Taunt to ensure that Amoonguss cannot use Spore or Rage Powder to disrupt Urshifu-R. Pelipper provides rain with its ability and has a STAB Flying-type attack in Hurricane to threaten Grass-types, and it can use Wide Guard to protect Urshifu-R from the variety of spread moves in the format, including Astral Barrage from Calyrex-S and Water Spout from Kyogre. It also can support Urshifu-R with Helping Hand. Amoonguss can handle Electric- and Grass-types that would threaten Urshifu-R by redirecting attacks away from it with Rage Powder. Urshifu-R forms a formidable pivoting core with Rillaboom and Incineroar, with the three spamming U-turn or Parting Shot to stay ahead of the opponent's switches, reactivate Fake Out, cycle Intimidate, and let Urshifu-R choose new moves to lock into. Incineroar helps take on opposing Rillaboom and Amoonguss for Urshifu-R, while Rillaboom deals with Kyogre and opposing Urshifu-R well and slows down Miraidon. Both of them can use Fake Out to prevent one of the opposing Pokemon from attacking, letting Urshifu-R attack the other without interference. Fake Out also often forces foes to use Protect, which Urshifu-R can attack through.

Urshifu-R is one of the strongest physical attackers in the format and can punish defensive plays with its ability Unseen Fist. It has a great matchup into Incineroar, since it ignores Intimidate with its signature move Surging Strikes, can switch into Chien-Pao and Calyrex-I, and is able to deal significant damage to Terapagos with Close Combat. Aqua Jet is almost unstoppable with Unseen Fist and can pick off Pokemon low on HP or deal damage before Urshifu-R gets KOed. Tera Water allows Urshifu-R to deal incredibly high damage with Surging Strikes, allowing for an OHKO against common threats such as Flutter Mane and Chien-Pao through Focus Sash. Tera Stellar lets it OHKO Terapagos-S with Close Combat but loses the consistency of Tera Water, since Urshifu-R can no longer use boosted Surging Strikes repeatedly. Urshifu-R works incredibly well in Calyrex-S teams, since it can threaten the Normal- and Dark-types that Calyrex-S struggles with, such as Terapagos and Incineroar. In exchange, Calyrex-S can deal with Raging Bolt, which is one of the most common checks to Urshifu-R, as Raging Bolt can use Thunderclap before Urshifu-R can move to bring it down to Focus Sash while also being able to switch-in on Surging Strikes. Urshifu-R synergizes well with Rillaboom and Incineroar, since Fake Out and Unseen Fist are a deadly combination, punishing passive plays such as Protect that try to avoid the flinching turn. Their typings also have incredible synergy with each other, allowing them to switch in on many attacks that Urshifu-R is threatened by. With its great physical bulk and natural type advantage, Rillaboom is a great check to it, slowing Urshifu-R down with Fake Out or doing high damage to it with Wood Hammer or Grassy Glide. Urshifu-R also struggles with Amoonguss, which is able to completely wall it while protecting its teammates with Rage Powder or putting it to sleep with Spore. Tornadus is a good partner for Urshifu-R, helping with its average Speed stat by setting up Tailwind, heavily increasing the damage Urshifu-R does while making the Koraidon matchup easier by using Rain Dance and threatening the Grass-types which could otherwise be problematic such as Amoonguss and Rillaboom with Bleakwind Storm. Koraidon and Miraidon are some of the Restricted Pokemon that have the best matchup into Urshifu-R, as Koraidon is able to set up sun and greatly reduce its damage, while Miraidon is able to outspeed it and bring it down to Focus Sash while also pivoting out with Volt Switch.

Urshifu-R is an excellent offensive Pokemon that can threaten metagame staples such as Incineroar, Chien-Pao, and Terapagos thanks to its fantastic typing and STAB moves, enabled by Unseen Fist. Taunt is another great tool that allows Tornadus to shut down Amoonguss for Urshifu-R. Urshifu-R can take on threats like Chien-Pao and Chi-Yu for the two in return. Alternatively, Rillaboom is an excellent pick, as it can pivot in Urshifu-R and threaten Ogerpon-W. Incineroar can pair with Urshifu-R and either Amoonguss or Rillaboom to create a fantastic pivot core, switching in on threats like Rillaboom. Rillaboom and Incineroar also bring Fake Out, which synergises with Unseen Fist. Urshifu-R is also a great asset to Calyrex-S, as it has the ability to remove Ghost-resistant foes like Incineroar and Terapagos.

Boosting Urshifu-R's damage allows it to pick up KOs it couldn't do otherwise, such as Chien-Pao, no-bulk Ogerpon-H and Ogerpon-C, and other Pokemon defensively trained to survive Urshifu-R's non-boosted attacks, such as Sitrus Berry or physically bulky Incineroar, with Surging Strikes. Aqua Jet gives Urshifu-R access to priority, which allows it to pick off low HP foes. Life Orb allows Urshifu-R to OHKO Archaludon and non-bulky Ogerpon-W. Tera Water is strong both defensively and offensively, allowing Urshifu-R to remove its Fighting-type to survive moves such as Flutter Mane's Moonblast and Tornadus's Bleakwind Storm. The boost to Surging Strikes can allow Urshifu-R to KO Pokemon it otherwise couldn't, such as Bold Flutter Mane and bulky Ogerpon-H. Tera Steel allows Urshifu-R to flip its matchup against Farigiraf, Flutter Mane, and Rillaboom. The Normal-type resistance is also useful against Extreme Speed Dragonite and can be used in a pinch against both Ursaluna formes. Tera Fire has some similar properties to Tera Steel but can also flip Urshifu-R's matchup against Ogerpon-H and give Urshifu-R immunity to burn. Both Tera Steel and Tera Fire make Urshifu-R weak to opposing Urshifu-R, with Close Combat and Surging Strikes respectively.

Amoonguss and Indeedee-F can disrupt Urshifu-R from attacking ideal targets via redirection and potentially break Urshifu-R's Focus Sash if they hold a Rocky Helmet. Indeedee-F's Psychic is able to KO Urshifu-R if Focus Sash is broken; Amoonguss notably takes pitiful damage, as it resists both of Urshifu-R's STAB moves, allowing it to easily put Urshifu-R to sleep with Spore. Koraidon and Miraidon both outspeed and threaten Urshifu-R while resisting Surging Strikes. On top of this, Koraidon's sun reduces Surging Strikes's damage output, and Miraidon can pivot with Volt Switch while breaking Focus Sash easily. Urshifu-R heavily appreciates Calyrex-I, which threatens Rillaboom, Amoonguss, Koraidon, Miraidon, and Raging Bolt with Glacial Lance, while Urshifu-R can, in return, threaten Dark-types such as Incineroar, Chi-Yu, and Chien-Pao that threaten Calyrex-I. Calyrex-I's Trick Room allows Urshifu-R to stay ahead of opposing Pokemon that would otherwise outspeed it, such as the aforementioned Miraidon and Koraidon. Tornadus threatens the Grass-types such as Rillaboom and Amoonguss that annoy Urshifu-R and can Taunt the Amoonguss, preventing it from disrupting Urshifu-R. Tornadus can also remove Koraidon's sun with Rain Dance, decreasing Koraidon's damage output while increasing that of Urshifu-R's Water-type attacks. Tornadus's Bleakwind Storm paired with Urshifu-R's Surging Strikes forces Koraidon to take super effective damage whether it Terastallizes or not. Urshifu-R complements Miraidon and Lunala compositions as a reliable attacker that counters Incineroar, a problematic threat to these compositions. Meanwhile, Urshifu-R's coverage against Dark-types also benefits Lunala; in exchange, Lunala's Moongeist Beam is threatening to Ghost-types like opposing Lunala. Miraidon's Draco Meteor can quickly remove the Dragon-types such as Raging Bolt and Koraidon that resists Urshifu-R's Surging Strikes. Rillaboom and Incineroar work well with Urshifu-R, as Fake Out and pivoting moves create opportunities for Urshifu-R to safety switch in without breaking Focus Sash, and their typing allows them to tank moves that Urshifu-R would be threatened by, such as Wood Hammer from Rillaboom, Psychic from Calyrex-S, and Electro Drift from Miraidon. Incineroar also threatens sizable damage towards Psychic-types like Indeedee-F and Lunala with Knock Off. Rillaboom helps reduce Miraidon's damage output by removing Electric Terrain while also being able to threaten Fake Out.

Tornadus's Bleakwind Storm and Chien-Pao's Icicle Crash threaten the Grass-types that are strong against Urshifu-R as well as Miraidon and Raging Bolt. Kyogre and Pelipper set the rain to power up Urshifu's Surging Strikes as well as overriding Koraidon's sun. Toxapex can assist Urshifu-R by taking on Fairy- and Grass-types like Enamorus and Meowscarada on top of providing Toxic support to wear down bulkier targets like Araquanid and Primarina. Choice Scarf Greninja provides vital speed control, enabling it to check fast Psychic- and Ghost-types such as Latios, Latias, and non-Choice Scarf Spectrier with Dark Pulse, alongside using coverage moves such as Sludge Wave to deal with the Ogerpon formes and Enamorus. Finally, Ice Spinner allows Urshifu-R to threaten Grass- and Dragon-types such as Hydrapple, Dragapult, and Dragonite. Finally, Urshifu-R has many viable options for its 4th moveslot; Aqua Jet deters Iron Valiant and Flutter Mane from attempting to revenge kill Urshifu-R, Thunder Punch hits Flying-types such as Pelipper as well as heavily damaging Toxapex, and Ice Punch hits Water Absorb Clodsire, Garchomp, and Flying-types such as Zapdos and Dragonite. Lastly, Okidogi and Scrafty are two potent Bulk Up wallbreakers that can make the difference in the Ghost, Dragon, and Poison matchups. It also sports a great Speed stat, allowing it to outspeed the majority of the unboosted metagame, including Mega Lopunny and Zamazenta. Surging Strikes's guaranteed critical hit chance means Urshifu-R ignores the Attack drop from Landorus-T's Intimidate and the Defense boost from Zamazenta's Dauntless Shield. U-turn helps Urshifu-R to keep up momentum throughout the course of a game, and also take advantage of defensive switch-ins like Toxapex and Alomomola for its teammates to set up on. Aqua Jet allows Urshifu-R to pick up KOs on Pokemon that are at low HP but outspeed it, like Speed Booster Energy Iron Valiant and Unburden Hawlucha. Urshifu-R has the ability to break most Steel-types, most notably Ferrothorn, so it can pave the way for Steel-weak Pokemon like Tapu Lele; in return, Tapu Lele is able to help Urshifu-R with most Dragon-types, most notably Dragonite, which it struggles to hit if it is not running Ice Spinner. One of the biggest Urshifu-R checks is Iron Valiant, which can take all of its attacks and KO it back with Moonblast. Mega Scizor can safely switch into Iron Valiant's moves and threaten high damage with Bullet Punch. Urshifu-R's powerful Close Combat neutralizes Dark-types such as Kingambit and Mega Tyranitar, which paves the way for teammates like Mega Latios and Mega Latias. Their strong special STAB moves are also a boon for Urshifu-R, as they can take advantage of bulky Water-types like Alomomola and Toxapex, which otherwise wall it. Protective Pads is used in order to ignore Static from Zapdos, Flame Body from Moltres and Volcarona, and contact damage from Ferrothorn, allowing it to break more freely. Urshifu-R fits primarily on hyper offense and bulky offense teams, where its strong STAB moves coupled with Swords Dance allow it to shred through defensive structures with ease. Urshifu-R is able to break through defensive pieces such as Landorus-T, Great Tusk, and Gliscor with its strong Surging Strikes, which is appreciated by teammates such as Gholdengo and Kingambit. In return, Gholdengo can beat problems such as Toxapex and Iron Valiant, and Kingambit can put pressure on switch-ins such as Slowbro. Urshifu-R is also able to threaten Steel-types such as Kingambit and Melmetal with its STAB boosted Close Combat, allowing teammates such as Tapu Lele to break through teams more easily. In return, Tapu Lele breaks through Toxapex and Mega Venusaur for Urshifu-R. Urshifu-R finds itself weak to Grass-types such as Ogerpon-W and Kartana, both of which outspeed unboosted Urshifu-R, meaning switch-ins such as Raging Bolt and Ferrothorn are appreciated. As well as this, Ferrothorn can set Stealth Rock for Urshifu-R, chipping switch-ins such as non Heavy-Duty Boots Dragonite and Raging Bolt. Urshifu-R also has trouble setting up against opposing offense and can easily be revenge killed by Pokemon such as Iron Valiant and Choice Scarf Tapu Lele before setting up, meaning switch-ins such as Gholdengo and Galarian Slowking are appreciated, with the latter also being able to bring Urshifu-R in safely via Chilly Reception.

Choice Band Urshifu-R is a strong wallbreaker on Water teams, taking on bulky foes like Ferrothorn, Archaludon, Kyurem, and Mandibuzz. Aqua Jet is a strong priority option to pick off faster albeit weakened sweepers and cleaners such as Ceruledge and Sneasler. Thunder Punch targets Water- and Flying-types like Toxapex, Pelipper, and Mantine, while Ice Spinner handles Dragon- and Ground-types such as Dragonite and Clodsire. However, Aqua Jet is preferred, since it stops opposing sweepers and cleaners in their tracks to enable its teammates to sweep or clean late-game. U-turn allows Urshifu-R to pivot out of unfavorable matchups, such as against Mantine and Dragonite, and bring a teammate in to deal with them. Pelipper is not only neutral to Grass, but it also sets up rain to boost Urshifu-R's Water-type STAB attacks, turning it into a potential late-game cleaner with rain-boosted Aqua Jet. It notably has a good chance of OHKOing Alolan Raichu with Aqua Jet under rain, and rain further makes Surging Strikes harder to switch into. Additionally, Pelipper removes entry hazards with Defog and pivots it in safely with U-turn. Swift Swim users such as Mega Swampert and Barraskewda thus make for great teammates as well, as they appreciate Urshifu-R's wallbreaking so they can clean late-game. Mega Swampert also provides an Electric immunity to deal with the likes of Tapu Koko, Regieleki, and Zeraora. Toxapex and Empoleon are great defensive partners due to their part-Poison and part-Steel typings, respectively, that allow them to take on Fairy-types such as Mega Diancie and Alolan Ninetales, which Urshifu-R dislikes. Additionally, they can stack entry hazards with Toxic Spikes and Stealth Rock, respectively, to aid Urshifu-R in wallbreaking, and Toxapex also removes boosts from setup sweepers with Haze. Greninja forms a strong wallbreaking duo with Urshifu-R, with it taking on the likes of Sinistcha, the Ogerpon formes, and non-Choice Scarf Iron Valiant for Urshifu-R, while it appreciates the removal of Ferrothorn and Empoleon in return. Ogerpon-W eases the Ground matchup thanks to its resistance, handling the Landorus formes and Garchomp in the process.

Close Combat versus Drain Punch: Close Combat's power makes it worth the defensive drops most of the time, especially with the protection of Focus Sash. Drain Punch is usually preferred for bulkier Punching Glove sets to improve Urshifu-R's survivability. Aqua Jet: Aqua Jet is perfect for picking off weakened foes that are faster than Urshifu-R, such as Chien-Pao and Flutter Mane. Swords Dance: With Swords Dance, Urshifu-R becomes far more difficult to wall by its defensive checks, though Dondozo is a notable exception. Substitute: Substitute with Punching Glove let's Urshifu-R take advantage of Alomomola that try to wear down Urshifu-R with Rocky Helmet, and is also effective at foiling slower status users. Adamant versus Jolly: Adamant is the preferred nature for giving Urshifu-R as much breaking power as possible. Maximizing Speed with Jolly is often not needed for most matchups, but it does surpass some key targets in Jolly Mimikyu, Jolly Gliscor, and Modest Chi-Yu. Other Options Bulk Up: Bulk Up takes advantage of Urshifu-R's underrated physical bulk, but it's far less consistent against powerful special attackers like Miraidon and Calyrex-S. Items Punching Glove: Punching Gloves protects Urshifu-R from taking devastating damage by hitting Rocky Helmet or Rough Skin with Surging Strikes, in addition to boosting other punching moves. Just note that these moves will now be blocked by Protect and other variants. Focus Sash: While it might seem strange with Urshifu-R's good physical bulk, Focus Sash lets it survive extremely powerful physical moves such as Chien-Pao's Electric Tera Blast without investing in bulk, as well as letting it survive powerful special attackers from Flutter Mane, Miraidon, and Calyrex-S.
