Toxic pressures opposing walls such as Galarian Corsola, Tangela, and Vullaby, with the former being notable as an ineffective spinblocker if it gets worn down by Toxic damage. It is often best to pair Wartortle with additional pivots that appreciate it as a switch-in to physical attackers and for removing entry hazards. To this end, offensive pivots like Thwackey, Raboot, and Electabuzz make for great partners. Special walls like Klang and Ferroseed check Kadabra and Gastly for Wartortle, while in return, Wartortle can switch into attacks from Magmar and Piloswine. These Steel-types also work as Toxic switch-ins for Wartortle, and partners like Koffing, Roselia, and Hattrem can either absorb or prevent opposing attempts to set Toxic Spikes. Both offensive and defensive Grass-types check Wartortle, as it has little to deter them, but it can at least avoid them by pivoting out into wallbreakers like Lampent, Choice Band Piloswine, and Raboot. Finally, support from Wish and Healing Wish users like Clefairy, Togetic, and Hattrem combat Wartortle's lack of recovery, allowing it function more effectively throughout the match.

Great bulk, good typing, and access to Shell Smash make Wartortle a solid sweeper. Alternatively, Rapid Spin provides Wartortle with a form of entry hazard removal if the team needs it. Wartortle should be used mid- to late-game to sweep vulnerable teams. To this end, Pokemon that commonly counter Wartortle such as Ferroseed and Mareanie should be put in range of a KO before attempting to set up Shell Smash, lest they threaten Wartortle out with Bullet Seed or Haze respectively. Knock Off users such as Tangela and Gurdurr make for excellent partners, as they can often force the aforementioned Pokemon onto the field and remove their Eviolite with Knock Off. Similarly, Electric-types like Electabuzz and Pikachu pair nicely with Wartortle, as they can damage shared counters like Ferroseed and Roselia, and Wartortle in return pressures the Ground-types like Marshtomp that they might otherwise struggle to deal with. Wartortle is pressured by priority users, notably Pikachu and Thwackey, so Pokemon that can limit their switchin opportunities like Spikes Ferroseed and Toxic Spikes Koffing pair well with Wartortle. Lastly, it can often be difficult to set up Shell Smash multiple times throughout a battle, so Wish and Healing Wish support from Pokemon like Clefairy and Hattrem greatly benefit Wartortle in this regard.

Moves Rapid Spin is the main reason Wartortle is used and allows it to remove entry hazards from your side of the field. Scald is Wartortle's main STAB and attacking move, which also has a good chance to burn physical attackers. Foresight makes Wartortle able to pull off a Rapid Spin even against Ghost-types, such as Misdreavus and Gourgeist. Toxic is used to cripple walls and limit the foe's longevity, further supporting Wartortle's teammates. Refresh is another option to use over Foresight as it allows Wartortle to remove pesky burns and poison which can easily wear it down. Set Details The given EVs along with a Bold nature are used to maximize Wartortle's physical bulk, which is the preferred choice, to better take on physical attackers. A specially defensive spread of 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD can also be used in order to check special attackers such as Floatzel and Simipour better. Eviolite further increases Wartortle's bulk, allowing it to be a solid check to most physical attackers. Torrent empowers Scald when Wartortle's health is low. Rain Dish could be useful to provide some recovery, but rain is rather niche and Wartortle is outclassed by other Pokemon such as Swanna in that playstyle. Usage Tips When entry hazards are on your own side of the field, Wartortle's main task is removing them, unless the opponent carries a Ghost-type. If the opponent carries a Ghost-type, Wartortle should use Foresight and remove entry hazards with Rapid Spin the turn after. To make up for Rapid Spin's momentum loss, Wartortle should rely on double switches and a slow Volt Switch or U-turn. Toxic should be used early-game to cripple foes from the start, and it should be used against walls, such as Audino, and Pokemon that resist Water-type attacks, such as Politoed and Lumineon. If entry hazards are set up on your side of the field, Wartortle should be switched in against physical attackers it can check, such as Mightyena and Ursaring, and then proceed to use Rapid Spin. Wartortle should not be switched in on special attackers, as it doesn't carry enough Special Defense EVs, making it easier for Wartortle to get KOed or worn down by them. Wartortle should be wary about taking too many hits, especially if it is needed later in the game, as it doesn't carry any form of recovery. Wartortle should also be careful about switching in on Pokemon that carry Knock Off, such as Pawniard, as they can remove its Eviolite, making Wartortle more frail. Team Options Wartortle fits best on balanced and defensively oriented teams, as it provides a lot of utility and is a solid check for physical attackers, while it is completely momentum-draining for offensive teams. Volt Switch and U-turn users such as Probopass, Rotom-F, and Vullaby help Wartortle, making up for its loss of momentum. Rotom-F and Vullaby also appreciate the removal of Stealth Rock. Special walls such as Audino can tank special attacks for Wartortle and provide Wish and Heal Bell support to help Wartortle live longer, and they appreciate the removal of entry hazards, especially Toxic Spikes. Roselia has good synergy with Wartortle, as it resists both of Wartortle's weaknesses and is able to absorb status for Wartortle thanks to Natural Cure. Other Grass-types, such as Gourgeist and Tangela, can switch in on offensive Grass-types such as Leafeon, which threaten Wartortle. Ground-types, such as Golem and Stunfisk, can switch in on Electric-type attacks and are therefore appreciated by Wartortle.

The almost unique combination of Foresight and Rapid Spin gives Wartortle the title of most reliable spinner in the tier. Scald is Wartortle's STAB move and gives it a chance to burn and cripple opposing physical attackers. With Scald, Wartortle can also beat entry hazard setters, such as Regirock and Golem, as well as spinning their entry hazards away. Toxic is used to cripple defensive threats, such as Musharna and Tangela. It also annoys and wears down offensive threats, such as Charizard and Ludicolo, on the switch. Meanwhile, Haze is another option to prevent Wartortle from being set up on. The Defense EVs on the set reach a jump point and allow Wartortle to take hits well from physical attackers, especially Golurk. The Special Defense EVs help it avoid a 2HKO from Life Orb Charizard's Hidden Power Grass. However, the EV spread is very flexible, and a specially defensive variant is equally viable if the team needs it. Wartortle is very vulnerable to being worn down, so teammates that can heal it or cure it from status are appreciated. Lickilicky and Audino are good teammates, as they can provide Wish support as well as cleric support, helping Wartortle regain HP and rid it of status and allowing it to shine on a stall team. Roselia can take Grass- and Electric-type moves for Wartortle, remove Toxic Spikes for it, and possibly provide cleric support with Aromatherapy. It can also provide Spikes and Toxic Spikes support, which stall teams need to have. On the set, Yawn can be used in place of Toxic and Haze to force switches, but it often clashes with Scald's burn chance. Seismic Toss is a good option to use as Wartortle's attacking move, as it can help break Substitutes and deal more damage. It also allows you to use Toxic more frequently, as there is no burn chance to interfere with it. While Torrent brings almost no benefit, it should be used because Rain Dish is illegal with Foresight, which is the primary reason to use Wartortle over Torkoal. Teammates that enjoy an entry hazard-free field appreciate the support that Wartortle provides. Charizard is a good example of this, as its 4x weakness to Stealth Rock is alleviated with Wartortle's support. They also share decent type synergy with one another.
