A Timid nature makes Kyogre faster than Calyrex-S and +1 Zygarde-C. Choice Scarf Kyogre can outspeed and revenge kill the vast majority of the metagame if it's healthy. Calyrex-S is a great partner, as it can beat Kyogre's biggest counters in Eternatus and Blissey, while Kyogre scares out Yveltal and Tyranitar, both of which can beat Calyrex-S. Necrozma-DM can set up Stealth Rock for Kyogre and beat Xerneas, which Kyogre often lets in when locking into non-STAB attacks. Ho-Oh can remove entry hazards with Defog so that Kyogre can remain as healthy as possible, and it also severely limits Ferrothorn's capabilities to check Kyogre. It doesn't, however, like the damage drop-off that rain gives to its Sacred Fire. Lunala and Groudon can help beat Zekrom, one of Kyogre's toughest checks.

Ice Beam lets Kyogre deal with the Dragon- and Grass-types that resist its STAB moves, especially Eternatus, which can outspeed Kyogre and reliably recover any lost HP. Thunder is perfectly accurate under Kyogre's rain, allows it to beat opposing Kyogre, chunks Palkia, and has a respectable chance to paralyze the foe. A Modest nature lets Kyogre 2HKO Ferrothorn and Eternatus after Stealth Rock. Timid sacrifices a bit of power for the ability to Speed tie with other base 90 Speed foes such as Zekrom. It's also mandatory on teams utilizing Sticky Web to outspeed Calyrex-S. Choice Specs Kyogre wants to fit on more offensive teams due to its item. Sticky Web support from Shuckle or Slurpuff helps compensate for Kyogre's unimpressive base Speed, allowing it to outspeed Calyrex-S and Pheromosa with a positive Speed nature. Xerneas beats bulky Dragon-types like Eternatus and Palkia, while Kyogre provides rain support for accurate Thunders and limits Morning Sun recovery for Necrozma-DM in return. Strong physical attackers such as Swords Dance Groudon can break past Eternatus and Ferrothorn, both of which Kyogre struggles to break. In return, Kyogre can take on Zygarde-C and Lunala, two common checks to Groudon. Calyrex-I is a good partner, as it can break past Eternatus and beat Zekrom while also helping overwhelm Ferrothorn. In exchange, Kyogre can scare out Ho-Oh and Necrozma-DM. Paralysis spreaders that draw in Eternatus such as Ho-Oh and Necrozma-DM are good partners for their speed control, which helps Kyogre use Water Spout more safely.

Most notably, Kyogre can switch safely into assorted support Arceus formes and play a long game with them as opposed to being put on a timer by Toxic. The last slot is dedicated to chipping away at Primal Groudon. Ice Beam is the generally safest choice, as it also prevents Facade Mega Salamence from switching in freely. Toxic, however, is more threatening in general and makes it much harder to outlast this set. It's also the best option for dealing with support Arceus-Water without PP stalling. Calm Mind can occasionally work on teams dedicated to its success. It makes this variant of Kyogre a pretty effective stallbreaker. In most matchups, however, Kyogre will prefer having another move. Some teams may opt for the move regardless so Kyogre can serve as a check to Calm Mind Arceus formes that aren't defeated by Toxic. Origin Pulse can be considered for the STAB attack. Even without investment, Kyogre’s damage with it is impressive. It remains generally inferior to Scald, though, as it lacks the ability to threaten burns and doesn't reach any notable KO benchmarks in exchange. It helps mitigate the downsides of Rest as Kyogre's only means of recovery. Blissey, Xerneas, and Magearna are the most common options for this role. Keep in mind, however, that you will rarely be given convenient opportunities to heal your sleeping Kyogre. Thus, you shouldn't rely on the possibility of Heal Bell support and use Rest aggressively without very careful thought. Kyogre's lack of Leftovers means that any sort of entry hazard makes things difficult for it to switch in frequently and makes it very vulnerable to double switches. Reliable Defog support from the likes of defensive Lunala and Giratina-O can help a lot. These two Pokemon are especially notable for their ability to handle the most common Stealth Rock setter, Primal Groudon.

It can also be used on a predicated sacrifice so Kyogre can trade more favorably with the next Pokemon. If using Liquidation, Kyogre can function as a lure for Blissey and Chansey. Team Options As always, Primal Groudon and Ferrothorn remain prominent threats. Having strong answers to both of them is recommended, as this set has the weakest matchup against them among the offensive variants of Primal Kyogre available. On the other hand, offensive teams with this Kyogre variant do not need to dedicate extra attention to Arceus-Water. In a pinch, you can even switch to Kyogre to force Arceus-Water to switch out itself. Ice Beam complements Primal Kyogre's coverage by cleanly OHKOing Salamence and Rayquaza, 2HKOing uninvested Giratina-O after Stealth Rock, OHKOing defensive Zygarde, and 2HKOing defensive Zygarde-C. Thunder rounds out Kyogre's coverage by hitting the handful of Water-types in the metagame. This allows Kyogre to 2HKO opposing Primal Kyogre after Stealth Rock and 2HKO Arceus-Water. Giving Kyogre a bit of bulk is viable to allow it to trade with Pokemon that it can never hope to outrun. 32 HP 64 Defense EVs, for example, allow Kyogre to survive Jolly Mega Salamence's Double-Edge after Stealth Rock while still affording Kyogre enough Speed to outrun unboosted Blaziken. It may seem strange to see a Special Attack-reducing nature being recommended for a set with multiple special coverage moves, but it does not prevent Kyogre from hitting the crucial KO benchmarks that it needs with these moves. Therefore, not reducing Kyogre's Speed or bulk is far more appreciated. Usage Tips It's often tempting to play conservatively with Primal Kyogre, as it is commonly the most effective breaker in a given matchup. However, Kyogre shines the most when it gets to exert early-game pressure to force difficult decisions from the opponent, most notably with regards to what they should do with their Primal Groudon. It's important to keep in mind that, even if a Primal Groudon manages to switch in safely, it is often a team's Stealth Rock setter. Knowing this, going for the potential 2HKO with Earthquake can punish an opponent looking to set up Stealth Rock early, where it matters most, on an expected switch. The advantage with this line of play is that, even if the opponent expects it, they are forced to choose between setting up Stealth Rock and trading with the immediate Kyogre threat. Freely eliminating Primal Groudon or indirectly pressuring Stealth Rock from being set on your side of the field is helpful for teams with other Pokemon that struggle versus a healthy Groudon or dislike having enemy Stealth Rock in play. In general, it is important to know when you should trade in Kyogre for getting off great damage on a threatening foe and, oftentimes, forced lines of play from the opponent. For example, when facing a Sticky Web team, use Kyogre as an anti-lead against Smeargle to force the opponent to switch to Primal Groudon after Smeargle is KOed. Leave Kyogre in against opposing Primal Groudon as fodder to get off as much chip damage as possible to weaken its Eruption as much as possible. After Kyogre is KOed, switch into a Defogger like Mega Salamence or Giratina-O to get rid of the Sticky Web on your side of the field. Pay careful attention to Team Preview. If their Arceus forme is Water type, the way you will have to play with Kyogre can change. Oftentimes, Arceus-Water is used early as the switch-in to Kyogre, since it is much harder to chip away at than Primal Groudon. Just because Kyogre’s coverage is impressive doesn’t mean you should always attack with it when you get the chance. Double switching is very useful for capitalizing on Kyogre’s immediate pressure. Team Options Pokemon that benefit from having Primal Groudon weakened are great options. Necrozma-DM and Xerneas are two such Pokemon. Necrozma-DM can threaten a sweep much more easily once Primal Groudon is within Earthquake's KO range. Geomancy Xerneas often comes just barely short of an OHKO versus most Primal Groudon variants, so any amount of chip damage helps. Choice Scarf Xerneas variants become harder to switch into as well for offensive teams with a weakened Primal Groudon. Primal Kyogre can also check any lingering Necrozma-DM for Xerneas. Lunala and Ho-Oh both appreciate Kyogre's ability to pressure the metagame's premier Stealth Rock setter, Primal Groudon. Ho-Oh deserves special mention for its ability to pressure and punish Ferrothorn for Kyogre. Ho-Oh can even run Defog to make sure Ferrothorn's Spikes are never an issue. Mega Salamence and Giratina-O can both switch into Primal Groudon as well as Defog away any Stealth Rock on your side of the field. Having Yveltal on your team forces opposing Primal Groudon to guess between two Pokemon immune to its powerful STAB attacks. Life Orb or Choice Specs variants of Yveltal are ideal for this, as they are much more immediately threatening to a healthy Primal Groudon. Life Orb Yveltal also has access to Sucker Punch, which shines in matchups where Kyogre isn't at its strongest. Pokemon that want pressure on Arceus-Water, like Mega Salamence, Dragon Dance Zygarde-C, Ho-Oh, Necrozma-DM, Arceus-Ground, and Primal Groudon, pair well with Kyogre. Thunder paralysis is all it takes to open the gates for these offensive Pokemon to get past a popular wall. Pokemon that can handle an active Arceus-Water, like Mega Gengar and Ferrothorn, will give Kyogre more leeway when it comes to guessing which coverage moves to use. Barring a few exceptions, most Pokemon faster than Kyogre tend to not have very much bulk and will rely more on their ability to attack first. This makes Pokemon that are at the top of Ubers Speed curve, like Mega Gengar, Marshadow, and many Choice Scarf users, are valuable teammates, as they exert greater pressure in the matchups that Kyogre is weakest in. In return, Kyogre's great pressure versus Pokemon slower than itself helps to set up late-game sweeps for these teammates.

Being able to deny Ferrothorn the opportunity to set up Spikes, if not just outright run over it, is very valuable to teams that are unable to afford direct countermeasures to Ferrothorn but are interested in the advantages Kyogre brings to the team. Calm Mind complements Water Spout. You can play mind games with a Ferrothorn that is aiming to use Protect for the extra Leftovers recovery to avoid the Water Spout 2HKO. It also helps Kyogre break other walls like Blissey and Arceus-Water. Origin Pulse allows Kyogre to still functionally pressure teams even when its HP is low or trade with Pokemon that are faster than it. It also cleans up any Pokemon that decided to trade blows with Water Spout. Ice Beam is the best option for getting past Primal Groudon with this Kyogre set. It also complements Kyogre's Water-type STAB moves really well in general; only Arceus-Water, Toxapex, and opposing Kyogre resist both. None of these Pokemon appreciates switching into a full-powered Water Spout anyway. Arceus-Water also cannot do much immediate damage back to Kyogre, so it gets overwhelmed by Calm Mind-boosted attacks. Thunder is an option over Calm Mind if you are especially worried about these Water-types. This hurt the set's overall effectiveness, though, and Thunder's targets are shaky checks in the first place. Set Details Kyogre wants as much firepower as possible for this set in order to break Ferrothorn as reliably as possible. Thus, maximum Special Attack EVs with a Modest nature are strongly recommended. This set wants to avoid trading blows so it can use full-powered Water Spouts. Therefore, running maximum Speed EVs is required. A Timid nature becomes tempting, but the drop in power is very noticeable; most notably, Primal Kyogre loses the chance to 2HKO Ferrothorn without prior damage. Usage Tips Using Water Spout as Ferrothorn switches in is the surest way to beat it. Calm Mind is a mostly safe middle-ground play if you are worried that the opponent might switch in their Primal Groudon instead. It's worth noting that if the Ferrothorn has Protect, Leech Seed, and Power Whip, Kyogre will need to win a Protect mind game if it doesn’t want to risk having poor damage rolls and fainting. Even in this worst-case scenario, however, Ferrothorn will be heavily weakened and likely never have an opportunity to set up Spikes later in the game. You want to be as aggressive as possible as early as you can. This variant just requires a bit more caution with regards to where it tries to apply its pressure and when it wants to switch in. Avoiding trades with faster foes, and coming in safely on double switches is ideal. If you don't see targets like Ferrothorn and Blissey at Team Preview, you don't need to worry as much about conserving Water Spout strength. Origin Pulse is a very powerful attack on its own. This set is bothered more by Primal Groudon than physical versions. Unboosted Ice Beam is often a 3HKO, but in many situations it is better to use a double switch to punish a predictable Groudon switch-in, which helps maintain immediate pressure as opposed to chipping for better pressure later. There is also less risk to Kyogre itself, as any potential damage is taken by the teammate instead. This may be important in matchups where you want to preserve Water Spout's power. Team Options Pokemon that can effectively pressure a healthy Primal Groudon, like Arceus-Ground, are helpful in presenting a greater risk to the Groudon for attempting to switch directly into Kyogre. More defensive Groudon answers like Giratina-O allow Primal Kyogre to opt for Ice Beam chip damage without forfeiting too much damage to the lost momentum. Giratina-O also has the advantage of being able to Defog away Stealth Rock to preserve Water Spout's power and can spread paralysis so Kyogre can threaten more quick OHKOs with it. A healthy Arceus-Water with Toxic and Recover can be difficult to overcome. Having a teammate that can deal with this situation is advised. The main draw to this set is that it is mostly self-sufficient, as there isn't a viable Pokemon in the metagame that can completely shut it down without playing around Water Spout perfectly. Primal Groudon forces the Kyogre user to guess, but it is also one of the easiest Pokemon to chip down. A single Ice Beam's worth of chip damage means that Groudon can no longer safely switch in unless it is faster. While they may not help directly with specific problems Kyogre faces, very fast Pokemon like Marshadow and Choice Scarf Xerneas are great teammates for Calm Mind + Water Spout Kyogre.

Moves Primal Kyogre has superb mixed bulk with Defense investment, making it a solid check to a wide range of Pokemon. Rest is Primal Kyogre's only form of recovery, but does allow it to shrug off status. Sleep Talk allows Primal Kyogre to fight back while asleep, and makes it a good Pokemon to absorb Dark Void from Darkrai. Scald is Primal Kyogre's STAB attack of choice due to its reliability and solid 30% chance to burn. Even with no investment in Special Attack, Scald still packs enough power to 2HKO 4 HP Arceus formes thanks to Primordial Sea. Ice Beam allows Primal Kyogre to damage Primal Groudon switch-ins and take down Mega Salamence and Rayquaza. Roar is also a fine option to phaze sweepers such as Swords Dance Arceus and rack up passive damage with entry hazards, though it leaves Primal Kyogre without a way to directly fight back against Mega Salamence and incoming Primal Groudon switch-ins. Set Details 12 Speed EVs allow Primal Kyogre to outspeed Diancie on the turn it Mega Evolves, KOing it with Scald before it can retaliate with Diamond Storm. The leftover EVs go into HP and Defense to maximize Primal Kyogre's physical bulk, though it is still quite specially bulky. Attacks it is capable of surviving at full health include a Dragon Dance-boosted Double-Edge from Jolly Mega Salamence, a Nasty Plot-boosted Dark Pulse from Life Orb Darkrai, and a Swords Dance Life Orb-boosted Extreme Speed from Arceus. One can also invest in Primal Kyogre's Special Defense rather than Defense. At the expense of becoming vulnerable to physical attackers, this makes Primal Kyogre an excellent check to key special attackers such as Darkrai, Calm Mind Arceus formes, and Geomancy Xerneas assuming you have Roar to phaze it. Usage Tips Defensive Primal Kyogre works well as a status absorber and check to threats such as Rock Polish Primal Groudon, Darkrai, Mega Diancie, and Calm Mind Arceus. It can also serve as an emergency check to Mega Salamence, though Primal Kyogre must have nearly full health to survive a boosted Double-Edge. As such, take care not to let Primal Kyogre get weakened too much. Do not try to stay in on Latios, Latias, or incoming Primal Groudon, as this set does not have sufficient power to break them by itself. If running Roar, use it liberally—it can really help weaken checks such as Primal Groudon with entry hazard support. Team Options Primal Groudon checks should always be considered first when making a team with Primal Kyogre. Although this set does well if Primordial Sea is up, Primal Kyogre cannot deal effectively deal with Primal Groudon if Desolate Land is active, so a backup check such as Giratina-O, Latias, or Arceus-Ground is recommended. Giratina-O and Latias also provide Defog support, which is crucial as this Primal Kyogre set does not like having to deal with entry hazards. Cleric support from Pokemon such as Clefable, Xerneas, or Blissey is also very useful to help keep Primal Kyogre healthy by curing sleep and thus allowing more uses of Rest. Blissey is particularly useful for checking Palkia, which is a thorn in the side of this set. Latias and Latios checks are still required, as this set cannot effectively damage them; Mega Scizor, Aegislash, and Tyranitar are the best options, as they can KO the Eon twins with Pursuit. If running Roar, entry hazard support from Pokemon such as Primal Groudon, Dialga, Klefki, and/or Ferrothorn is a must to help rack up passive damage on Primal Kyogre's checks. It is also recommended to run a backup check to Mega Salamence, as Primal Kyogre is not reliable enough at doing so to serve as a team's primary answer to it. Arceus-Rock, Shuca Berry Dialga, Lugia, and Klefki are all fine options to deal with Mega Salamence.

Moves Waterfall hits extremely hard due to Primal Kyogre's high base 150 Attack and the power boost granted to Water-type attacks by Primordial Sea. Waterfall also has a nifty 20% flinch chance that comes in handy when facing slow walls or paralyzed foes, which is why it is used over the slightly more powerful Aqua Tail. Earthquake is mainly used to hit Primal Groudon on the switch and deals over 40% to support sets on average. It is also Primal Kyogre's best option against Ferrothorn, although it does not 3HKO Ferrothorn without prior damage. Ice Beam is used even with an Adamant nature because of its ability to reliably OHKO Mega Salamence and Rayquaza. Avalanche cannot OHKO Mega Salamence if it chooses to set up a Dragon Dance instead of immediately attack Primal Kyogre and cannot come close to OHKOing Latias on the switch, as Avalanche does not double in power unless Primal Kyogre is directly attacked that turn. Thunder Wave is used in the last slot to cripple would-be checks such as Latios, Latias, Arceus-Grass, and Arceus-Water. It also allows Primal Kyogre to check Calm Mind Arceus formes more effectively. Set Details Physical Primal Kyogre uses a simple maximum HP and Attack EV spread to hit as hard as possible while taking repeated blows from the special attackers it is trying to check or paralyze. The given EV spread does not use Speed investment because Primal Kyogre will ideally be slower than Primal Groudon in the lead position. In fact, Primal Kyogre can run a Brave nature and 30 Speed IVs to ensure that even Sassy Primal Groudon will be faster than it. However, 12 Speed EVs are possible if you want it to outspeed maximum Speed Diancie before it Mega Evolves, although this is not necessary, as Diancie will not stay in on Primal Kyogre anyway unless it uses Protect turn one. Primal Kyogre can also run 56 or more Speed EVs to outrun most Ho-Oh. Usage Tips Primal Kyogre is a quality lead if you're expecting the opponent to lead with Primal Groudon, as it should be able to get heavy rain up by virtue of being slower. From there, it can either spam Waterfall or attempt to cripple your opponent's secondary Primal Kyogre check (which will likely switch in) with Thunder Wave. If Primal Kyogre is in on a Pokemon that it threatens, such as Arceus-Ground, and your opponent still has a healthy Primal Groudon, it can deal over 40% damage to it on the switch if you predict correctly and use Earthquake. Doing so will help either Primal Kyogre or a teammate break through it later in the match. Be careful about switching Primal Kyogre directly into Primal Groudon or Ho-Oh, as even with maximum HP, it risks getting 2HKOed by Precipice Blades from the former or Brave Bird from the latter. Physical Primal Kyogre can be a nasty surprise for some of Kyogre's usual switch-ins, such as Primal Groudon, Blissey, and even Latios. If your opponent has a Blissey, try not to reveal Waterfall or Earthquake until it switches in on Primal Kyogre so that Primal Kyogre can proceed to hit it extremely hard with Waterfall. If it uses a physical move before Blissey comes in, physical Primal Kyogre loses the element of surprise. This set is helpless against Ferrothorn, so double switch out of it whenever possible to Pokemon such as Ho-Oh and Primal Groudon. Remember that, although Primordial Sea does shield Primal Kyogre from Sacred Fire and Lave Plume, it does not protect it from Will-O-Wisp, so be careful around Pokemon that commonly run the move, as a burned Primal Kyogre is essentially useless. Finally, be very careful of Yveltal, as Foul Play will do massive damage to this set. Team Options Ho-Oh is an excellent offensive partner for Primal Kyogre, as it can help break down walls such as Primal Groudon and Arceus formes with Primal Kyogre while checking Shaymin-S and Ferrothorn. It also appreciates Primal Kyogre's paralysis support. Geomancy and Choice Scarf Xerneas are also good partners because Kyogre is capable of luring and dealing massive damage to some of Xerneas's checks, such as Blissey and Primal Groudon. Moreover, Primal Kyogre appreciates teammates that can check Zekrom and Latios. Primal Groudon provides an immunity to Electric-type moves and can set up Stealth Rock, while Ferrothorn resists both of Zekrom's STAB moves and has no problem checking Latias and Latios lacking Hidden Power Fire. Checks to opposing Primal Kyogre, which can threaten this Primal Kyogre set with Thunder or Scald burns, are also appreciated; Arceus-Grass and Primal Groudon take on Primal Kyogre easily.

Moves Calm Mind boosts Primal Kyogre's already impressive Special Attack and Special Defense stats, making it a terrifying and difficult-to-KO wallbreaker. Origin Pulse is the primary STAB attack due to its sheer power. To illustrate, Primal Kyogre is able to 2HKO Blissey and bulky Pokemon resisting Water such as specially defensive Dialga and Ferrothorn with just one Calm Mind boost, thanks to Primordial Sea. Blizzard is rather inaccurate, but it allows Primal Kyogre to OHKO Latios, Latias, and Arceus-Grass after a Calm Mind boost and Stealth Rock damage. Ice Beam is a weaker but more accurate alternative that is still able to take down the Eon twins if they've been weakened somewhat. Both Blizzard and Ice Beam also deal decent damage to Primal Groudon, which usually lacks recovery and is worn down quickly. Thunder is primarily used to take down opposing Primal Kyogre and Arceus-Water, though it also has utility in spreading paralysis against faster walls such as Lugia, Latias, and Arceus. Thunder also 2HKOes Palkia after a Calm Mind boost, although Ice Beam can do this as well. If hitting opposing Kyogre is not of much concern, boosted Hidden Power Ground can do massive damage to Primal Groudon, 2HKOing even the most specially defensive variants. Set Details 84 Speed EVs allow Primal Kyogre to outspeed anything slower than minimum Speed base 100 Pokemon, such as Jirachi, defensive Xerneas and Yveltal, and most Primal Groudon. Special Attack is maximized to deal as much damage as possible, and the rest of the EVs goes to HP to bolster Primal Kyogre's solid bulk. Fully investing in Speed is also an option, but doing so won't confer many benefits outside of outspeeding faster Primal Groudon variants. Usage Tips Primal Kyogre excels at breaking down slower stall and balanced teams that can't do much to stop it from boosting. Try to set up on defensive Pokemon and weaker special attackers that can't hurt Primal Kyogre too much, such as Lugia, the Giratina formes, Scizor, defensive Dialga, defensive Yveltal, Skarmory, and support Arceus formes. Using your Ice-type move or Hidden Power Ground when you first send out Kyogre is usually a good idea if the opponent has a Primal Groudon, a usual first response to Primal Kyogre that nullifies its Primordial Sea and STAB Water-type attacks. Bear in mind that this variant of Primal Kyogre lacks recovery and can be easily worn down by residual damage—make every turn it gets count. Team Options It cannot be understated that Primal Groudon is a huge jerk to Primal Kyogre. Desolate Land grants Primal Groudon immunity to Water-type attacks, and it has enough bulk to take an Ice Beam or two. In return, Precipice Blades destroys Primal Kyogre, so good Primal Groudon checks are necessary. Arceus-Ground is one of the best Primal Groudon checks, capable of switching in on any attack and healing off the damage taken or simply KOing Primal Groudon with Judgment. Arceus-Ground is also a fine check to Zekrom, which otherwise greatly threatens Primal Kyogre with STAB Bolt Strike. Pokemon that are immune to Ground-type attacks, such as Giratina-O, Latias, Latios, Landorus-T, Mega Salamence, and physically defensive Yveltal, all check Primal Groudon decently as well. It is also recommended to pack a Pursuit user to easily take out Latios and Latias, which can still defeat Primal Kyogre with Calm Mind and Psyshock. Mega Scizor and Aegislash are excellent options to deal with the Eon twins; as a bonus, they also tend to lure in Primal Groudon for an easy Toxic to help whittle it down, a massive boon for Primal Kyogre. In return, Primal Kyogre easily switches into Fire-type attacks thanks to Primordial Sea. Primal Kyogre also appreciates entry hazard support to help whittle down Primal Groudon and other walls. A Primal Groudon of your own is a fine Stealth Rock user, though Dialga, Tyranitar (which can also provide Pursuit support), and Landorus-T are also fine options. Spikes are readily provided by Klefki, Scolipede, Ferrothorn, or Deoxys formes. Since Primal Kyogre usually takes a lot of damage while breaking walls, pairing it with a Healing Wish user such as Latias or Jirachi to give Primal Kyogre a second chance to sweep once its checks are gone isn't a bad idea. Since Primal Kyogre does help weaken walls such as Primal Groudon and Blissey, Pokemon that appreciate them weakened or KOed are fine teammates. Xerneas is an excellent choice, as Primal Groudon's lack of recovery means it usually cannot handle both Xerneas and Primal Kyogre at the same time. Primal Kyogre can also easily take advantage of bulky Steel-types that bother Xerneas. Zekrom also appreciates a weakened Primal Groudon greatly, and it can use Volt Switch to help get Primal Kyogre into battle.

Substitute is a natural move to consider for a slow, bulky sweeper like Kyogre. The ability to make 101 HP Substitutes is especially notable for allowing Kyogre to set up on Chansey and Blissey, though Kyogre loses some coverage in exchange. Substitute is also an effective scouting tool in general, particularly when Zekrom is on the prowl. Speed isn't very important here due to all the setup time required to pull this set off, so one should just invest in HP and Special Attack to hit hard. Scald is an option to cripple physical attackers. This Kyogre has room for only one coverage move. Without Ice Beam, Kyogre is stopped by and vulnerable to Dragon-types, such as Latias, Arceus-Dragon, and Zekrom, but without Thunder, Manaphy, Arceus-Water, and opposing Kyogre will wall this set. One can use bulky Steel-types to deal with the aforementioned Dragon-types. Jirachi and Ferrothorn in particular can use Thunder Wave or Body Slam to paralyze faster opponents, such as Latias, Garchomp, and the many formes of Arceus. To take on opposing Kyogre, one should turn to specially bulky partners, such as Blissey, Dialga, and Water-resistant Arceus formes. Some threats pose a severe problem regardless of the coverage move used. Bulk Up Dialga and Choice Scarf Zekrom are among the most prominent of these because of their powerful physical moves, and Ferrothorn also proves threatening because it can 2HKO Kyogre while Kyogre cannot 2HKO back with a Calm Mind boost. Toxic Spikes in particular can be a huge problem to SubCM Kyogre because poison nullifies its ability to beat Chansey and Blissey. Groudon, Arceus-Ground, and Excadrill are great partners for this reason, as they can deal with the likes of Bulk Up Dialga and Choice Scarf Zekrom. Arceus-Steel, SubCharge Magnezone, and Lugia are also plausible teammates because they can switch into Ferrothorn and easily set up or phaze it away. Mixed Zekrom works in a similar way, threatening a Focus Blast. Toxic Spikes can be absorbed through Arceus-Poison or Tentacruel, or removed by Rapid Spin from Forretress or Excadrill.

This set can be considered a cross between the slow mono-attacker set and other Calm Mind sets. By using Chesto Berry for a one-time free Rest before sweeping, Kyogre avoids the vulnerable period of sleep while retaining the ability to rid itself of status. Since Kyogre only gets one free Rest, this set requires some care to pull off. The Chesto Berry also provides insurance against Darkrai. The slow nature of this set emphasizes a need to concentrate on power and overall bulk, rather than on Speed. Having only one coverage move leaves Kyogre vulnerable to different groups of enemies depending on what it runs. Without Ice Beam, Kyogre is vulnerable to Dragon-types such as Latias and Arceus-Dragon, while forgoing Thunder opens it up to Manaphy, Arceus-Water, and opposing Kyogre. Jirachi and Ferrothorn can be useful for fighting Dragon-types, resisting their STAB moves and using Thunder Wave or Body Slam to paralyze them. Alternatively, revenge killers, such as Choice Scarf Zekrom and Choice Scarf Garchomp, can be used, though users of this set should not rely too much on switching Kyogre out to deal with threats. Opposing Kyogre can be checked with specially bulky partners, such as Chansey, Blissey, Dialga, and Water-resistant Arceus formes. Regardless of the coverage move, Kyogre is weak against Zekrom, Ferrothorn, Bulk Up Dialga, Ludicolo, Gastrodon, and opposing Calm Mind users. Zekrom and Ferrothorn easily destroy Kyogre, Ferrothorn 2HKOing Kyogre with Power Whip before Kyogre can 2HKO back, while Bulk Up Dialga can set up on Kyogre, even using Rest to rid itself of burns. Groudon, Arceus-Ground, and Excadrill can deal with Zekrom and Bulk Up Dialga reasonably well. A Ferrothorn of one's own is another good option because it can deal with Zekrom, Ludicolo, and Gastrodon, though the former two may carry Focus Blast with the intent to remove Ferrothorn. Of course, this also makes said Pokemon good partners to get rid of opposing Ferrothorn.

Choice Scarf Kyogre is an effective and powerful revenge killer, though it cannot boast the absurd wallbreaking power that Choice Specs Kyogre has. It still has a very powerful Water Spout that deals at least 79.7% to +1 Mewtwo, an OHKO after Stealth Rock and Life Orb recoil, which is an impressive feat that other special Choice Scarf attackers, such as Palkia and Dialga, fail to achieve. Considering that Kyogre is in the common base 90 Speed bracket, the Speed EVs are maximized to optimize its revenge killing capabilities, letting it tie with other base 90 Speed Choice Scarf users, such as Dialga. A Modest nature can still be used for the extra power, however. The choice between Modest and Timid nature can be somewhat complicated. The extra power makes it easier to KO several threats, which are listed below with damage calculations. On the other hand, some speed benchmarks that Modest misses are Deoxys-A and opposing Timid Choice Scarf Kyogre, both of which can deal massive damage to or OHKO Kyogre if they go first. One could note that most of the Pokemon listed below are weak against Ice Beam. Modest 131 Base Power Water Spout: vs 252/0 Arceus 37.6% - 44.4% (Chance to 2HKO with Stealth Rock; Timid fails entirely) vs 252/200 Dialga 39.9% - 47% (Very small chance to 2HKO with Stealth Rock) vs 0/0 Rayquaza 40.5% - 47.9% (2HKO with Stealth Rock) vs 252/0 Latias 42.9% - 50.3% (Chance to 2HKO) vs 4/0 Arceus 43.7% - 51.6% (Very large chance to 2HKO with Stealth Rock) vs 0/0 Giratina-O 44.2% - 52.4% (2HKO with Stealth Rock; Timid is not guaranteed) vs 252/0 Manaphy 48.3% - 57.2% (2HKO with Stealth Rock) Modest Surf: vs 0/0 Rayquaza 29.3% - 34.8% vs 0/0 Dialga / Zekrom / Manaphy 41.6% - 49.3% vs 4/0 Hydreigon 47.24% - 55.83% (2HKO with Stealth Rock; Timid is not guaranteed) The list of counters to the Choice Scarf set is somewhat long. Essentially, any Pokemon that resists Water and is at least as bulky as Arceus can wall Kyogre pretty comfortably. This notably includes Ferrothorn, Arceus-Grass, Giratina, and Dialga; the idea of breaking through Chansey, Blissey, and Palkia with Kyogre's STAB moves is pretty much out of the question, though Palkia will go down to a couple of bouts of Thunder. Additionally, Wobbuffet is fatal to Kyogre, being able to trap it and survive Surf, Ice Beam, or Thunder. Ferrothorn is especially a problem because it can use Kyogre as an opportunity to set up entry hazards, which hurts not only Kyogre but also the rest of the team. Bulk Up Dialga provides a more offensive threat, being able to set up a potential sweep against Kyogre. Generally, a wallbreaker can be of use to smash through some of the tougher enemies. Mixed Zekrom is a good example because it can lure and KO Ferrothorn with Focus Blast, destroy Giratina, and hit Dialga and Arceus hard. Mixed Giratina-O and mixed Rayquaza work similarly, as do mixed Palkia and mixed Dialga, which can lure Chansey and Blissey and smash them with physical attacks. These mixed attackers can also be used to lure in and KO Wobbuffet. Groudon, Arceus-Ground, and Excadrill are good partners as well, particularly against Dialga; Groudon can run a Fire-type move to get rid of Ferrothorn, and Excadrill can use Rapid Spin to remove the entry hazards that Kyogre hates. Another way to beat some of the walls, particularly Chansey and Blissey, is to trap them with Wobbuffet and use Encore and Tickle to render them helpless against a Pursuit user, such as Scizor or Tyranitar. SubCharge Magnezone can also be used to punish a Ferrothorn switch-in severely by trapping and setting up on it, though one should have a Rapid Spin user to get rid of the entry hazards Ferrothorn is likely to set up. Wish support is recommended to restore Water Spout's power. Jirachi is great in this role due to its Steel / Psychic typing, which leaves it only vulnerable to Ground in the rain.

Choice Specs is an obvious item to put on Kyogre considering the record-setting power of Water Spout. Almost no switch-in is safe from a 2HKO--even Chansey can be 2HKOed by Water Spout in the rain--making Kyogre an extremely dangerous wallbreaker. Kyogre also has Thunder and Ice Beam, both of which 2HKO Palkia, so that very few Pokemon can safely switch in at all. When Kyogre's HP drops lower, it can use its alternative STAB move, either Surf (at 63.3% HP or lower) or Hydro Pump (at 80% HP or lower). Water Spout alone gives severe problems to most opponents. The following examples give a good idea of this by demonstrating Water Spout's power after Kyogre is hit by Stealth Rock upon switching in. 131 Base Power Water Spout: vs 252/216+ Ludicolo: 29.67% - 34.89% vs 248/252+ Giratina: 36.97% - 43.53% vs 0/0 Palkia: 38.94% - 45.79% vs 4/252+ Chansey: 42.52% - 50.16% (Possible 2HKO; guaranteed on Bold with Stealth Rock) vs 252/224+ Tentacruel: 52.2% - 61.5% (Might survive for a bit with Rain Dish + Protect) vs 252/252+ Ferrothorn: 53.98% - 63.64% (2HKO) vs 252/4 Arceus (resist): 56.08% - 66.22% (OHKO on other Arceus) vs 104/0 Zekrom: 79.84% - 94.01% (Possible OHKO with Stealth Rock) vs 252/80 Lugia: 91.59%+ (OHKO with Stealth Rock) Surf: vs 248/252+ Giratina: 26.83% - 31.61% vs 0/0 Palkia 28.04% - 33.02% vs 4/252+ Blissey 37.88% - 44.79% vs 252/252+ Ferrothorn 39.2% - 46.31% (Possible 2HKO with Stealth Rock) vs 252/4 Arceus (resist) 40.77% - 47.97% (Possible 2HKO with Stealth Rock) vs 252/0 Zekrom 52.72% - 62.13% (2HKO) vs 252/80 Lugia 66.59% - 78.61% (Possible OHKO with Stealth Rock) In essence, Choice Specs Kyogre has very few safe switch-ins at first--only the likes of defensive Ludicolo, specially defensive Giratina, Palkia, and Water-immune Pokemon can switch in to Water Spout repeatedly. However, the number of potential checks and counters grows as Kyogre loses HP. To avoid this problem somewhat, Kyogre can opt for Hydro Pump instead of Surf to 2HKO Ferrothorn, at the cost of the perfect accuracy of Surf. One can also trade HP for some Speed to outrun certain threats, such as Tyranitar, or run 252 Speed with a Timid nature for better sweeping prospects, but Kyogre really appreciates the added bulk from 252 HP EVs. The quirky nature of Water Spout gives this set some serious drawbacks. If Kyogre is damaged significantly while locked into Water Spout, the opponent essentially has a free turn as Kyogre is forced out. Additionally, this set is liable to being revenge killed by many faster threats in Ubers, including Dialga, Palkia, Zekrom, and Shaymin-S. While prediction or persistence can deal with Palkia, such is hardly an ideal solution, and coverage will not be enough to stave off Gastrodon, Ludicolo, or Chansey. Considering that Water-resistant Arceus formes and Ferrothorn can also switch in when Kyogre is weakened, one must be careful with the power wielded, so that Kyogre is not easily reduced to setup bait. On the other hand, just about every Pokemon switching into Water Spout will be heavily damaged, helping to pave the way for other attackers to pull off a clean sweep. It may strike some as ironic that Groudon is one of Kyogre's best partners. Groudon's stats and typing are well-suited to deal with some of Kyogre's most common, dangerous predators, including Zekrom and Dialga. Groudon also has Stealth Rock to help Kyogre to land some of its KOs. If Groudon's Drought is a turn-off, Arceus-Ground can play a very similar role and has more balanced defensive stats than Groudon. Ferrothorn can also help to tank attacks from Gastrodon, Palkia, Ludicolo (to an extent), and Zekrom. Skarmory is a decent alternative to Ferrothorn that fares better against Arceus and Arceus-Ground, but far worse against Zekrom. For Chansey and Blissey, one can employ a trapping combo of Wobbuffet and a Pursuit user. Wobbuffet uses Encore and Tickle to make them helpless against a switch to Scizor or Tyranitar. Wobbuffet is also useful to get rid of Choice Scarf Zekrom and Palkia. Mixed Palkia and mixed Dialga are good alternatives to take care of the pink blobs as well as Giratina, relying on luring and hitting hard with physical attacks rather than trapping. Palkia in particular benefits from a boosted Aqua Tail for this purpose. To take maximum advantage of Water Spout, fast Taunt leads, such as Deoxys-A and Deoxys-S, and Rapid Spin users, such as Excadrill and Forretress, make good partners. Bulky Excadrill in particular provides an excellent Thunder switch-in, while in return, Kyogre's rain removes one of its weaknesses. Kyogre also appreciates Wish support to restore Water Spout to usable power levels. Jirachi is especially good for this role because of its excellent defensive typing in the rain and its ability to paralyze switch-ins with Body Slam or Thunder Wave. Blissey is also a good Wish supporter because of its huge HP stat, but Jirachi tends to gel better with Kyogre; the choice really depends on the rest of the team. Tornadus is also worth a mention. It has very good offensive coverage, benefits from a perfectly accurate Hurricane, and can really weaken Ferrothorn. Additionally, if it is about to be KOed, it can use priority Tailwind, giving Kyogre a prime opportunity to sweep without faster revenge killers getting in its way.

Kyogre can be useful as a lure for fast attackers and leads. It can be used as one of a team's lead options, standing up well to many opposing leads thanks to its bulk. Darkrai loses if Kyogre runs Lum Berry, and Groudon loses to Kyogre's STAB. Faster leads play a risky game between laying Stealth Rock on a Thunder Wave and using Taunt on an attack. When not leading, Kyogre can lure unsuspecting switch-ins, such as Zekrom, Palkia, and Shaymin-S, and cripple them with Thunder Wave; many of Kyogre's common switch-ins do not like Thunder Wave at all. Kyogre's paralysis support can turn "counters" such as Choice Scarf Palkia into bait for slower sweepers, such as Dialga, Groudon, Arceus-Ground, and Garchomp. Jirachi and Shaymin-S also love the paralysis support because it combines with their Serene Grace-boosted flinching moves to keep their opponents immobile. Ground-type teammates especially appreciate the opportunity to switch into Electric-type attacks, as well as the paralysis support. Dialga also walls Gastrodon and really benefits from the paralysis support. However, there are still a few holes; Ferrothorn, Chansey, and Blissey don't mind anything that Kyogre throws at them. A combination of Tickle Wobbuffet and a Pursuit user (Tyranitar and Scizor are typically the best for this role) should be considered for dealing with Chansey and Blissey quickly, though Bulk Up Dialga, mixed Dialga, and mixed Palkia also work. Ferrothorn falls to strong Fighting-type moves like Mixed Zekrom's Focus Blast. It is also susceptible to setup or phazing by the likes of Arceus-Steel, Giratina-O, SubCharge Magnezone, and Lugia.

This set trades coverage moves for the ability to recover HP with Rest + Sleep Talk, making it an extremely "heavy" sweeper that becomes hard to stop once it gets going. This set will eventually defeat even Chansey and Blissey by healing and ridding itself of status ailments. Thus, the set uses a heavily physically defensive EV spread to maximize the defensive stat that Calm Mind does not boost. Scald becomes a great STAB move here, able to burn physical attackers to make Kyogre even harder to KO, though Surf is still well worth using. However, the opponent can exploit Kyogre's relative vulnerability while asleep, as Sleep Talk often picks the wrong move, essentially skipping crucial turns. This set's biggest problem is opposing Calm Mind users. In particular, Calm Mind users that resist Water, such as Giratina, Giratina-O, Latias, Manaphy, and Arceus-Dragon, wall this Kyogre completely and heavily pressure it into using Rest or switching out. Strong physical attackers also pose problems, especially Zekrom and Rayquaza, as they resist Surf, though both of them are afraid of Scald. Zekrom is a much bigger problem for this set than others, as it can switch in more easily and smack Kyogre to oblivion regardless of its defensive EVs. Ludicolo and Gastrodon wall this set completely as well. With Scald, this RestTalk variant has a good chance of beating Ferrothorn, but if the burn doesn't go through, Ferrothorn will prevail with Power Whip and Leech Seed. Considering that Dragon-types are such an issue, Choice Scarf Garchomp and Choice Scarf Zekrom are natural choices for partners, as they are excellent revenge killers and can pick off the opponent's Dragon-types to make way for Kyogre's sweep. Groudon, Arceus-Ground, and Excadrill are also good partners for dealing with Zekrom and Bulk Up Dialga, and they can take advantage of burns that Kyogre may cause if it is running Scald. Also, Gliscor can switch into Zekrom to set up a Substitute stalling strategy. If Ludicolo and Gastrodon are problems, Ferrothorn can wall them, though it must watch out for Ludicolo's Focus Blast. Mixed Zekrom or Groudon can be used to lure Ferrothorn and beat it down with Focus Blast or Fire Blast, respectively, while SubCharge Magnezone, Giratina-O, Arceus-Steel, and Lugia easily tank Ferrothorn's attacks and phaze or set up on it. Another advantage of all of these examples is that they can use their powerful physical attacks to ward off specially defensive walls and force other Pokemon to take damage, paving the way for these walls to face a setup attempt by Kyogre.

Although most sets focus on taking advantage of Kyogre's fabulous base 150 Special Attack combined with Drizzle and its famous Water Spout, its amazing base 140 Special Defense, which is higher than Blissey's, is often overlooked. While obviously having a lot less HP than Blissey, Kyogre has several advantages over her as a special wall. Kyogre brings weather support to your team and has certain resistances which are crucial to walling extremely powerful attackers, such as Choice Specs Reshiram, who can 2HKO even Blissey under the sun. With a specially defensive spread, Kyogre becomes a fabulous check to several top threats in the metagame. Kyurem-W, the hardest hitting special Dragon, might not even 2HKO Kyogre with Choice Specs Draco Meteor. Kyogre also becomes a great check to most Calm Mind Arceus formes bar Grass and Electric, which are both rare in the current metagame. Even Arceus-Electric will not enjoy repeated Scalds and potential burns on the switch, leaving Arceus-Grass as the only Arceus forme that can beat this Kyogre without fail, though an unboosted Judgment will not 2HKO. Kyogre can choose to either try to burn them and then Roar them out or Roar them out immediately unless sleeping. If you're Darkrai weak, this Kyogre is the biggest check you can think of outside of Arceus-Fighting. Not only can it absorb sleep for your team, but it also doesn't take much damage from Darkrai's attacks, can Roar it out or 2HKO it in its sleep with Scald, and if Scald burns, KO it in two turns with burn damage. However, keep in mind that, if you get really unlucky with Sleep Talk, Darkrai might 3HKO Kyogre with +2 Dark Pulse combined with Bad Dreams. Rest gives Kyogre a way to repeatedly switch in and check the threats it needs to deal with. Kyogre can heal up after tanking a Draco Meteor from Reshiram, Kyurem-W, Latias, Latios, or Dialga. This is especially useful when they try to KO with two consecutive Draco Meteors, and if it Rests as they attack, it will wall them easily, because it is generally slower than them with this set. Sleep Talk is Kyogre's only chance to do something while sleeping. Surprisingly, this Kyogre is actually great at checking Palkia, a common check to most Kyogre sets, as Thunder doesn't even 2HKO from full health. Keep in mind, Kyogre will still lose to Palkia one-on-one and Choice Specs versions will still 2HKO you with Thunder. Pairing this set up with Ferrothorn is a good idea to completely wall Choiced Palkia, but beware of Lustrous Orb or mixed variants. The EVs are quite simple: 248 HP EVs instead of 252 HP so you have an odd HP number which is helpful versus Leech Seed, Stealth Rock, and Spikes at times, max Special Defense EVs because special walling is the purpose of the set, and the rest thrown in Defense. Running a Sassy Nature coupled with 0 Speed IVs is an option to almost always ensure rain on Turn one versus an opposing Groudon lead if you want momentum from the start. Thunder Wave is an option over Roar that you can be used to paralyze Calm Mind Arceus and switch to a Pokemon like Zekrom to beat it, but Roar is almost always the best choice to phaze and prevent setup from dangerous sweepers such as Rayquaza, which resists Scald and negates rain with Air Lock. Because this Kyogre works well with entry hazards, Roar is the best choice to take advantage of them. Surf is an option over Scald if your team is reliant on poison or paralysis support or if you want some additional power from your Kyogre. However, keep in mind that the power increase is hardly noticeable on this Kyogre as it is very weak compared to other Kyogre sets. Burning potential checks such as Palkia and Ferrothorn can also go a long way in wearing them down. The usual Kyogre counters still beat this set. Ferrothorn is more annoying than ever as it can pound Kyogre hard with Power Whip and will win unless it is burned by Scald. Kyogre also barely scratches Latias with Scald, but she barely even has a chance to 2HKO it with Grass Knot or Thunder even while running an offensive spread, meaning it can go for a phaze or a burn. It is advisable to pack a Latias check such as Tyranitar when using this Kyogre set, because Calm Mind Latias can still easily beat Kyogre once she can no longer be Roared out. Zekrom still murders this Kyogre with its STAB Bolt Strike but must watch out for a burn on the switch in. Mewtwo bypasses the specially defensive EV spread with Psystrike and can OHKO at +1 with a Life Orb. Offensive Groudon's boosted Earthquake will easily OHKO this Kyogre set, as Kyogre's Defense is rather bad by Ubers standards. Ho-Oh can 2HKO this set easily with Brave Bird and is capable of tanking a Scald due to its huge Special Defense and this Kyogre's lack of Special Attack investment. Shaymin-S can easily switch in on this set, due to its relatively weak Scald, and Seed Flare will 2HKO. The Choice Specs set will also OHKO Kyogre with Leaf Storm. Ferrothorn, Dialga, Giratina-O, and Tyranitar all make good partners for this set, and all of them besides Giratina-O can check Latias. Ferrothorn, Dialga, and Giratina-O resist both Electric- and Grass-type attacks, while Kyogre can easily tank Fire- and Ice-type attacks in return. Tyranitar easily traps Choice attackers, such as Palkia locked into Thunder trying to kill Kyogre. Genesect can switch in on Latias and beat it with U-turn and is capable of beating Shaymin-S as well.

This is a simple bulky Calm Mind set with two coverage moves, which allows Kyogre to attempt a sweeper role, using its power and bulk to make up for its low Speed. The main advantage over the Choice sets is that Kyogre can take special hits from opponents like Palkia much better due to the Calm Mind boosts. In fact, after one Calm Mind, Palkia fails to 2HKO Kyogre with Thunder without a Life Orb or Choice Specs boost, while Kyogre easily 2HKOes with its own Thunder. Kyogre can also be more of a team player with Scald--since physical attackers such as Zekrom love to switch in on Kyogre, Kyogre can potentially burn them and effectively neuter them. The EVs depend on whether bulk or Speed is more desirable. For a faster Kyogre, a 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe EV spread with a Timid nature is recommended for tying with other base 90 Speed Pokemon such as Dialga, though a Modest nature is an acceptable alternative. On the other hand, the lost HP is quite significant, and there aren't many common Pokemon in Ubers to outrun within the possible Speed range. Zekrom, Ferrothorn, and Bulk Up Dialga are some of the most effective checks. In particular, +1 Kyogre cannot 2HKO Ferrothorn before it is 2HKOed by Power Whip, and Bulk Up Dialga can simply set up a counter-sweep. Groudon, Arceus-Ground, and Excadrill take care of both Zekrom and Bulk Up Dialga, and each has its advantages. Mixed Zekrom resists both of Ferrothorn's STAB moves and threatens a Focus Blast, while SubCharge Magnezone, Arceus-Steel, and Lugia can easily set up on Ferrothorn or phaze it. On the other hand, one can elect to use Scald and burn all three of these counters (though Bulk Up Dialga commonly uses Rest and Sleep Talk), to support another sweeper with the same counters, such as Manaphy or Arceus-Water. Paralysis support is extremely helpful for minimizing the damage that Kyogre has to take, both because of the Special Defense boosts from Calm Mind and because some of Kyogre's checks, such as Arceus-Grass and Choice Scarf Zekrom, are faster and will not appreciate the paralysis. Jirachi is a great paralysis supporter for Kyogre because of its Steel typing, which blocks Toxic and Grass- and Dragon-type assaults, and the fact that its only effective weakness in the rain is Ground. It also has the option of using Body Slam instead of Thunder Wave, which can be useful to paralyze Garchomp and Arceus-Ground on the switch and render them nearly incapable of revenge killing Kyogre. Ferrothorn is a good alternative; it benefits from Steel typing, and resists both of Kyogre's weaknesses. Arceus-Grass may not have the Steel typing, but it is a good alternative nonetheless due to its great bulk and ability to take on Zekrom. Wobbuffet can be a very effective partner for this set. Paired with a Pursuit user such as Scizor or Tyranitar, Wobbuffet can put an abrupt end to Blissey and Chansey, using Tickle to bring them into the OHKO range of Pursuit. Wobbuffet can also remove the dangerous Choice Scarf Zekrom. Finally, by trapping an opponent and locking it into an inconsequential move, Wobbuffet can create a prime opportunity for Kyogre to set up at least one Calm Mind. Tornadus is another plausible teammate because it benefits from a perfectly accurate Hurricane. It can also use priority Tailwind just before it is KOed, giving Kyogre a prime opportunity to set up and sweep with its Speed temporarily fixed.

This set destroys anyone depending on a non-Psych Up, non-Calm Mind Blissey to counter Kyogre. 101 HP Substitutes mean that Blissey can't break them with Seismic Toss, and Kyogre's massive Special Defense ensures that they will become unbreakable with Thunder after the second Calm Mind, and the first if Blissey doesn't carry maximum Special Attack. It can also wear down many things your opponent may use to attempt to counter Kyogre and allows it to set up a Substitute and start Calm Minding against whatever their next answer is after their first gets worn down or fainted. If you opt for Ice Beam in the last slot, Kyogre will be unable to break through opposing Kyogre. Because of this, Latias can be a good teammate for Substitute Kyogre. Latias can easily switch into an opposing Kyogre's Thunder, and either force it out with the threat of Grass Knot or Thunder, or use Calm Mind to set up on Kyogre. In a similar manner, a specially defensive Bulk Up Dialga can switch into a Choiced Kyogre's Thunder and set up on it. If Substitute Kyogre uses Thunder over Ice Beam, Kyogre will have even more trouble with Latias and Latios then usual, so Choice Band Tyranitar and Choice Band Scizor with heavy Special Defense investment make good partners. Like the last set, Kyogre will greatly benefit from Wobbuffet's support, as Wobbuffet can use Encore to help Kyogre set up a Substitute.

Although this set may seem more offensive at first glance, its primary role is to support, focusing on luring Kyogre's common counters as opposed to blasting everything in sight. Its main selling point is the ability to 2HKO Blissey with Waterfall, which helps immensely to facilitate a sweep for another special sweeper. However, Kyogre's usefulness doesn't end there, as it can also cripple its two primary counters, Latias and Palkia, with Thunder Wave. Even with virtually no investment in Attack, a simple Life Orb ensures that Waterfall will 2HKO Blissey. Life Orb has the added benefit of boosting both Surf and Thunder as well, which can be helpful when facing physically defensive foes such as Groudon. Thunder is usually given the nod over Ice Beam because it hits opposing Kyogre and does more damage to Lugia, but Ice Beam is an option if Dragon-types trouble you. Life Orb is meant to be used with a Hasty nature to give Kyogre power without sacrificing Speed, but Sea Incense is a worthy alternative if the recoil turns you off. When using Sea Incense, it's recommended to use a Mild nature with a spread of 192 HP / 60 Atk / 252 SpA to ensure a 2HKO on Blissey with Waterfall. There are a number of Pokemon that benefit from Kyogre's ability to remove Blissey and cripple Latias and Palkia. Taunt + Calm Mind Mewtwo is an excellent example; not only can it sweep with greater ease with Blissey out of the picture, it also doesn't have to worry about being revenge killed by Palkia if Palkia is paralyzed. A Calm Mind Latias of your own is another great partner, especially if you run Ice Beam on Kyogre, as it can counter opposing Kyogre and sweep once Blissey is eliminated. Although this set struggles against typical Kyogre counters such as Palkia, Latias, and Ludicolo, the use of Thunder Wave can help mitigate this weakness. However, Quagsire deserves mention because it completely walls all of Kyogre's attacks outside of Ice Beam. Scizor is a good partner to beat Quagsire, and it also serves as a great Palkia and Latias check if Kyogre is unable to paralyze them.

Kyogre is capable of smashing through teams with its ridiculously powerful double-STAB Surfs after a single Calm Mind. In addition to boosting Kyogre's Special Attack, Calm Mind also boosts Kyogre's titanic 140 base Special Defense, making Kyogre much tougher to revenge kill. For example, Palkia cannot 2HKO a +1 Kyogre with Thunder without Life Orb, while Kyogre 2HKOes most Palkia with Thunder. Even a Life Orb Shaymin-S can only do 84% maximum to a +1 Kyogre with Seed Flare, while Kyogre will easily OHKO with Ice Beam. Despite being one of the slowest Ubers, Kyogre gets good usage out of a Timid nature, letting it tie at worst with Groudon and other non-Choice Scarf Kyogre and outspeed the vast majority of Dialga and Rayquaza. It can also outrun Lugia that invest more EVs into their defenses than Speed and 2HKO it with +1 Thunder. If Speed is not as important as power, Modest is an acceptable nature. When using Modest, Kyogre's EV spread should be 124 HP / 252 SpA / 132 Spe. The Speed allows Kyogre to outspeed most Adamant Rock Polish Groudon before they boost their Speed. Despite Calm Mind Kyogre's power, Kyogre will have a difficult time getting past Blissey, Latias, and Latios. Blissey can use Toxic, Protect, and Wish to eventually stall Kyogre to death. Because of this, Wobbuffet can be a very effective teammate for Calm Mind Kyogre. Wobbuffet can trap Blissey and use Tickle to lower its Defense. After being Tickled two times, a fleeing Blissey will be OHKOed by a Pursuit coming from a neutral-natured Choice Band Tyranitar with 56 Attack EVs. After being Tickled four times, a fleeing Blissey will OHKOed by a Pursuit coming from an Adamant Life Orbed Scizor with 100 Attack EVs. With Blissey out of the way, Kyogre will often have a much easier time sweeping. Wobbuffet is also able to help set up Kyogre thanks to Encore and Shadow Tag. A Careful Tyranitar with 252 HP EVs and 200 Special Defense EVs is capable of switching into any of Latias's or Latios's special attacks bar Grass Knot and either OHKO them with Crunch or OHKO them with Pursuit as they switch out. Scizor can also switch into Latias without Thunder and threaten to OHKO them with U-turn.

Although this seems similar to the Mono-Attacker set, this set packs some notable advantages. Instead of setting up Calm Minds over time, this set focuses on getting as many Calm Minds as possible and then Resting. Thanks to Chesto Berry, Kyogre will immediately wake up at full HP, ready to drown anything in its path with STAB Surf. Without the need for Sleep Talk, this Kyogre can afford to run a second attacking move. Ice Beam is generally the best option as it allows Kyogre to stop Rayquaza, Giratina-O, Palkia, and Shaymin-S cold. Thunder can also be used to allow Kyogre to defeat some opposing Calm Mind Kyogre, Manaphy, and Lugia, while also dealing more damage to Palkia than Ice Beam. This Kyogre appreciates Toxic Spikes support, as well as teammates to prevent Latias and Latios from using Calm Mind alongside Kyogre and consequently beating it with Thunder or Grass Knot. With Toxic Spikes, Kyogre can focus on gaining more Calm Minds against things like Blissey and Palkia while the poison withers them away into nothingness. Forretress sets up Toxic Spikes very easily thanks to its many resistances and draws Fire-type attacks that Kyogre can switch into. Choice Scarf Tyranitar can easily come in on Latias and Latios who lack Grass Knot and Pursuit as they switch or KO them with a fast Crunch. Scizor and Metagross are also solid Pursuit users to consider for the job. Most boosted Electric-type attacks, such as Choice Specs Thunder from the likes of Dialga, Palkia, and enemy Kyogre will 2HKO this Kyogre even after a Calm Mind boost. Furthermore, physical variants of Dialga and Palkia can 2HKO Kyogre before it can even set up. Garchomp boasts an immunity to Electric-type attacks and can use his powerful STAB Outrage and Earthquake to destroy the aforementioned Pokemon. Garchomp also baits Ice-type attacks that Kyogre can set up on. Physical Dialga and Palkia can be handled easily by Groudon, who can also take Electric-type attacks aimed at Kyogre. Lugia can work as well by setting up Reflect to help Kyogre take physical attacks as it sets up. Both Groudon and Lugia can provide paralysis support to make up for Kyogre's middling Speed, but it's not recommended with Toxic Spikes on the same team.

Kyogre is most often seen as a hit and run Pokemon, setting up the rain as it enters into the battle. With Choice Scarf boosting its mediocre Speed, and the rain boosting Water Spout's already gargantuan Base Power, Kyogre becomes a deadly revenge killer. Water Spout is pure power; it can easily destroy Mewtwo and Darkrai in one hit assuming Kyogre is at full health. When one wants to conserve the abysmal PP of Water Spout, or if Kyogre's HP is too low to abuse Water Spout, it can fall back onto Surf or Hydro Pump for STAB. Surf is more reliable, but Hydro Pump OHKOes Mewtwo and Metagross. The other two attacks are used to cover what the Water attacks don't. Thunder 3HKOes Palkia and will 2HKO opposing Kyogre, while Ice Beam OHKOes Rayquaza, Garchomp, and Shaymin-S. Be careful not to constantly switch Kyogre into attacks, as even the smallest shots can decrease Water Spout's power. Sadly, however, there is no way to avoid taking damage from Stealth Rock, Spikes, or Toxic Spikes, unless you use a Rapid Spinner, which may not even get to Spin due to the presence of Giratina. Kyogre needs to be at 80% health or higher to keep Water Spout more powerful than Hydro Pump, or 64%+ health to keep it stronger than Surf. Waterfall and Aqua Tail are options on this set to severely dent Blissey. Kyogre needs 180 Attack EVs with either a Mild or Rash nature to guarantee a 2HKO on Blissey with Aqua Tail. Waterfall won't 2HKO, but its chance of flinch will keep Blissey away from it. You have two options for the nature here (assuming you don't use a physical Water move): Modest or Timid. Modest gives Kyogre extra power, but Timid is often the better choice because it allows Kyogre to outrun Naive / Hasty Deoxys-A, Adamant Dragon Danced Rayquaza, and other Modest Choice Scarf Kyogre. It all depends on what you desire for the team. In addition to the problems Choice Specs Kyogre has with Palkia, Latias, and Ludicolo, Choice Scarf Kyogre has issues with Blissey, Giratina, and specially defensive Dialga. Scizor can easily deal with Latias without Thunder and Ludicolo without Surf. Bulk Up Dialga is an excellent teammate for Choice Scarf Kyogre. This is because Bulk Up Dialga can easily set up on both Blissey and Giratina. Defensive Groudon can usually handle specially defensive Dialga, as many are Bulk Up variants. If you are worried about defensive Dialga with special attacks, a Blissey of your own can withstand its attacks.

Choice Specs Kyogre is absurdly deadly; a Timid Water Spout deals 54-64% to 252 SpD Calm Blissey, a guaranteed 2HKO, something that most special attackers cannot boast about. With Choice Specs, Ice Beam deals massive damage to Latias and Latios, and Thunder becomes capable of OHKOing an opposing Kyogre. Palkia will actually hesitate to switch in to this, since a Thunder from a Timid Choice Specs Kyogre does 58% minimum to a 4 HP / 0 SpD Palkia, and the paralysis chance is always threatening. The choice of nature depends on your preference. Timid lets Kyogre outspeed other Kyogre, Groudon, most Dialga, some Palkia, and Lugia. Modest will always 2HKO Blissey with Water Spout, and it lets you OHKO Lugia a bit more often, too. It can also 2HKO the standard Latias, who is one of Kyogre's only true counters, with Stealth Rock in play. If you are running a Modest nature, it is advised to use an alternate EV spread of 240 HP / 244 Special Attack / 24 Speed. Kyogre is one of the slowest Ubers (not counting Wobbuffet), and Speed does not help it much. 24 Speed here allows it to outrun Tyranitar and possibly some other base 90 Speed Ubers (Groudon, Kyogre, Dialga, Giratina, Deoxys-D, Ho-Oh) that don't pump their Speed. When using Choice Specs Kyogre, it is often a good idea to use Ice Beam before any other attack if you do not know the opponent's whole team. This is because the two most common Kyogre switch-ins, Palkia and Latias, are both 2HKOed by Ice Beam if they have taken damage from Stealth Rock. Choice Specs Kyogre will have problems sweeping with Water Spout if Palkia and Latias are still around, and additionally, Quagsire can wall it thanks to Water Absorb and its Ground typing. Finally, a specially defensive Ludicolo is arguably the only true Choice Specs Kyogre counter, as it can stall out Thunders thanks to Protect, Rain Dish, and Leech Seed. Choice Band Tyranitar with 56 Attack EVs can easily take care of Latias, as Pursuit will 2HKO it if it doesn't switch out, and Crunch will easily OHKO Latias. Be warned that if Latias is carrying Grass Knot, the standard Careful 252 HP / 200 SpD Tyranitar has a 80% chance of being 2HKOed after taking damage from Stealth Rock. Scizor can work in a similar manner if Latias lacks Thunder, thanks to a Pursuit of its own and STAB U-turn. A specially defensive Scizor also has the bonus ability to switch into a defensive Ludicolo's Grass Knot and threaten it with U-turn. Quagsire poses no threat to Scizor as well. Finally, Palkia can be dealt with by switching Garchomp into its Thunder. Be careful, as some Palkia may opt to use a Dragon move instead, which will OHKO Garchomp. A defensive Dialga can work in a similar manner, and Dialga will survive Palkia's Dragon-type assaults (unless Palkia has Choice Specs). Thanks to Blissey's massive Special Defense and HP, she can work well with Choice Specs Kyogre, as she can switch into Latias's and Palkia's powerful special attacks and wall them (be careful with Palkia, however, as some of them are mixed). Giratina-O complements Choice Specs Kyogre very well offensively and defensively. When facing most stall teams, their only hope against Giratina-O is Latias. If Giratina-O has set up one Calm Mind, it can OHKO Latias after it switches into Stealth Rock, while Latias will be unable to KO Giratina-O. With Latias down, Choice Specs Kyogre can devastate the stall team, as Latias is often their only hope against Choice Specs Kyogre. Giratina-O also sports a resistance to Electric and Grass moves, and thus can set up on these moves if they are Choiced. Although Groudon most certainly cannot switch into Choice Specs Kyogre's powerful Water- and Ice-type attacks, it can switch into Kyogre's Thunder, use Rock Polish on the switch, and attempt to sweep. Because of this, Choice Scarf Shaymin-S makes an excellent offensive teammate for Kyogre, as it can outspeed an Adamant Groudon after it has used Rock Polish once and will OHKO it with a STAB Seed Flare. Garchomp can utilize a similar tactic when switching into Thunders, but dealing with Garchomp can be much trickier, as Garchomp commonly holds Choice items of its own, allowing it to often hurt your switch-in badly. Skarmory can be used as a way to ward off Garchomp, as it is immune to Garchomp's Earthquake, resists Outrage, and will be able to withstand Fire attacks more easily thanks to Kyogre's rain. Bronzong also works in a similar manner. Both Skarmory and Bronzong can beat Groudon that lack Fire Punch, as they can set up entry hazards, and Bronzong can 3HKO Groudon with Grass Knot. Something important to note is that once Kyogre is at 75% of its health, specially defensive Dialga can survive and outstall Kyogre's Water Spouts via Pressure and Rest (though Dialga is still 3HKOed by Surf). Because of this, a Groudon can be a useful teammate for Kyogre, as most specially defensive Dialga will have Bulk Up; thus they will have trouble beating Support Groudon while Groudon will inflict severe damage on Dialga with STAB Earthquakes.

RestTalk Calm Mind Kyogre is yet another option. It is very similar to the previous set, with the exception of Calm Mind. Calm Mind boosts its already titanic special stats even further, and as it sets up, Surf washes almost everything ashore. RestTalk keeps Kyogre alive and healthy and free from status. With this set, Kyogre will easily beat any Blissey without Psych Up + Thunder. This set runs into major problems against Latias and Latios, who resist Surf and are capable of Calm Minding alongside Kyogre. As usual, Scizor or Tyranitar can be used to beat most Latias or Latios. Rayquaza is a problem as well: with a Water resistance and Air Lock to nullify rain, it easily sets up a Dragon Dance or Swords Dance. Choice Specs Kyogre can also use Thunder to do some serious damage as well. Because of this, Choice Scarf Garchomp is a very good teammate with Boosting Tank Kyogre. Garchomp can switch into Rayquaza as it attempts to set up, and either force it to switch out or OHKO it with STAB super effective Dragon moves. Thanks to Garchomp's Ground typing, it can also absorb Thunders from Choiced Pokemon such as Kyogre and force them to switch out. Finally, Choice Scarf Garchomp is also able to outspeed and KO opposing Latias and Latios with Outrage.

Kyogre in a lead position is often helpful to set the tone for the entire battle; not only will it set up rain that you can take advantage of with your other team members, it will also cripple opposing leads such as Darkrai and Tyranitar. Hydro Pump is mandatory, as Surf fails to OHKO specially defensive Deoxys-S. Icy Wind can be used to anti-lead Froslass, but its significantly lower power makes it an inferior option. Lum Berry on this set is important for two reasons. Firstly, if Darkrai tries to use Dark Void, your status will remain intact and you can subsequently OHKO with Hydro Pump. It will also help with taking on Groudon's Thunder Waves, and after that, you can OHKO with a rain-boosted Hydro Pump. The given spread outspeeds Jolly Tyranitar and maximizes Kyogre's Special Attack. More bulk can be used if needed for specific matchups. Note that this set can be used as a mid-game sweeper, not only as a lead. Thunder Wave is incredibly helpful in taking down some counters. It's normally outclassed by the Calm Mind set in terms of sweeping, though, as that set can build up damage over time. If you do decide to go this route, though, run Expert Belt over Lum Berry, as it can still bluff a Choice item. The main selling point of Thunder Wave Kyogre is its ability to help slower sweepers who have problems with Latias and Palkia by paralyzing them, as both are common switch-ins to Kyogre. A good teammate for this lead is a mixed Palkia, as it benefits from both the paralysis and the fact Kyogre and Palkia have similar counters means that if you immobilize a Latias or opposing Choice Scarf Palkia, it is easier for Palkia to sweep. Another Pokemon who benefits from this is Swords Dance Garchomp. If Kyogre is able to paralyze either Latias or Choice Scarf Palkia, Garchomp will have a significantly easier time sweeping. Dragon Dance Rayquaza also greatly benefits from this particular Kyogre, as Choice Scarf Palkia will no longer be able to stop a sweep from Rayquaza when paralyzed. Finally, Giratina-O is particularly useful with Thunder Wave Kyogre, because Palkia and Latias will be hard pressed to stop its sweeps if they are paralyzed.

Thunder Wave slows down common faster Pokemon that switch into Kyogre, such as Palkia, Latios, and Latias. This makes them vulnerable to Kyogre, which can set up Calm Mind and rip them apart with its boosted attacks. Kyogre is an especially great user of Thunder Wave, as common Ground-types like Groudon and Garchomp fear switching into its powerful Hydro Pump. Ice Beam smacks Dragon-types that resist Hydro Pump, including Giratina-O, Latios, and Latias, as well as Shaymin-S. It also gives it a way to threaten Groudon if it has come in to change the weather on Kyogre. Because this Kyogre isn't fully invested in its Special Attack, Hydro Pump is the preferred move so that it threatens the greatest number of opposing Pokemon, but Surf is a decent alternative for its greater consistency. The investment in Kyogre's HP and Defense allows it to take two unboosted Earthquakes from Garchomp after Stealth Rock, while the Special Attack investment and Modest nature let Kyogre 2HKO uninvested Dialga with Hydro Pump. The rest of the EVs are put into Special Defense so that Kyogre can take attacks from faster special attackers like Darkrai and Mewtwo and paralyze them. Despite Kyogre having great special bulk, it does not like taking a powerful Dragon-type attack or Thunder when trying to paralyze the aforementioned Palkia, which can even run Lum Berry, or Lati twins. It instead prefers to paralyze them on the switch and then switch out afterward. Therefore, Kyogre still needs checks to these Dragon-types. Bronzong is a great partner, as it takes their Dragon-type moves well while potentially setting up Trick Room to benefit this slower Kyogre. Additionally, because this variant of Kyogre lacks Thunder, it struggles to break opposing Kyogre and other Water-types. Thus, checks to opposing Kyogre like support Dialga, Palkia and the Lati twins are great partners. In exchange, Kyogre's rain boosts the power of Palkia's Water-type STAB moves and makes its teammates's Thunders perfectly accurate. Thunder Wave also supports slower attackers like Groudon and Rayquaza that appreciate their faster checks being slowed down for them to deal with. Kyogre also dislikes Spikes cutting into its bulk, so spinners like Tentacruel and Forretress and antileads like Tyranitar are appreciated so that it does not have to deal with leads stacking multiple layers of Spikes. Deoxys-S is also a great partner to this Kyogre in the lead position, as it can set up Spikes to wear down special walls like Blissey or use a Choice Scarf to prevent opposing leads from setting up Spikes. Giratina-O is also a great partner that prevents the opponent from removing entry hazards, making Kyogre even more of a threat.
