Moves
With Swords Dance, Kartana's wallbreaking power reaches dangerous heights, especially with its Z-Crystal still intact. Leaf Blade slices apart key neutral targets like Toxapex and Landorus-T while threatening Tapu Fini, Slowbro, and Rotom-Wash super effectively. Sacred Sword mows down Steel-types like Heatran and Ferrothorn, with +2 All-Out Pummeling allowing Kartana to bowl over Celesteela, Mega Scizor, and Skarmory, OHKOing the latter two after Stealth Rock. Giga Impact turns into Breakneck Blitz, letting Kartana lure in and destroy Zapdos after a Swords Dance boost. Knock Off runs through Cresselia and Victini, pressures Mega Latias and Mega Latios attempting to switch in, and punishes would-be answers like Celesteela and Zapdos by removing their held items. Lastly, Smart Strike threatens Grass-resistant foes like Magearna, Mega Mawile, and Tapu Bulu.
Set Details
A Jolly nature is needed to outpace key threats like Garchomp, Mega Medicham, and Tapu Lele. Kartana is very flexible with its Z-Crystal options. Normalium Z should be used with Giga Impact, turning the normally unreliable move into a one-time nuke that can smash through Zapdos after a Swords Dance boost. Fightinium Z is needed alongside Sacred Sword, as Kartana cannot OHKO Celesteela, Mega Scizor, and Skarmory at +2 without activating its Z-Move. Steelium Z is used when running Smart Strike and helps punish foes like Mega Latias and Mega Latios without dealing with the drawback of Giga Impact after using Normalium Z. It should be noted that both Normalium Z and Steelium Z can also punish other Grass-resistant foes like Serperior and Tornadus-T on the switch, OHKOing them after prior chip damage, while Fightinium Z and the aforementioned Steelium Z both OHKO Magearna after a Swords Dance boost. Grassium Z turns +2 Leaf Blade into a massive nuke that can reliably muscle past Grass-resistant foes like Zapdos and Magearna after prior chip damage or when supported by Tapu Bulu's Grassy Terrain. Alternatively, Kartana can invest its EVs in bulk and opt for a Timid nature with 19 Attack IVs to boost its Speed instead of its Attack after a KO, turning it into a deadly late-game cleaner that is difficult for fast offensive threats like Mega Alakazam, Mega Lopunny, and Ash-Greninja to deal with. Keep in mind that this comes at a significant drop in Kartana's damage output.
Usage Tips
Swords Dance Kartana excels at dismantling defensive teams early- and mid-game and cleaning up in the late-game. Kartana often finds setup opportunities against bulky targets that it easily forces out like Gliscor, Ferrothorn, and Rotom-Wash. However, it must tread carefully around faster threats commonly found on balance archetypes like Mega Lopunny, Mega Alakazam, and Mega Latias. Even more offensive teams such as rain and bulky offense can struggle to switch into Swords Dance Kartana without directly sending in a healthy answer like Tornadus-T, and they may need proper positioning from foes like Mega Alakazam, Ash-Greninja, Tapu Koko, and Serperior to revenge kill it. Be careful not to mistime the use of Kartana's Z-Move, as it will be wasted if the opponent sacrifices a weakened Pokemon to entry hazards. To give a notable example of how Kartana's Z-Move can end up wasted, opponents using Zapdos can scout for sets running Normalium Z and send in a Pokemon that can resist the Z-Move, making Giga Impact practically useless afterwards; Fightinium Z variants, on the other hand, cannot OHKO key targets like Skarmory and Mega Scizor at +2 after Stealth Rock without activating its Z-Move.
Team Options
Swords Dance Kartana finds its footing across several offensive archetypes, ranging from bulky offense to hyper offense, which can reap the benefits of its role as an early- and mid-game wallbreaker as well as a late-game cleaner. It also occasionally fits on sand teams for similar reasons while providing the team with vital speed control even outside of sand, alongside checking Water-types for partners like Mega Tyranitar and Excadrill. Mega Tyranitar is a solid progress maker, as it can provide Pursuit support to trap and remove Tornadus-T, Mega Latias, and Mega Latios, all of which threaten to put a stop to Kartana's sweep. Tapu Bulu also pairs well with Kartana, providing Grassy Terrain to bolster Leaf Blade's damage output; this becomes especially dangerous if Kartana is running Grassium Z because the boost lets it OHKO Grass-resistant foes like Zapdos and Magearna with a +2 Bloom Doom, allowing it more freedom to run a coverage move like Knock Off. Pivots like Landorus-T, Tornadus-T, Tapu Koko, Rotom-Wash, and Magearna are helpful for safely getting Kartana onto the field, giving it easier setup opportunities. Fellow wallbreakers like Mega Alakazam, Mega Medicham, and Mega Diancie are also beneficial for Kartana, applying heavy pressure against shared answers for the other to clean up. Fire-type sweepers like Mega Charizard X and Volcarona also make solid partners, as they mow down the likes of Zapdos and Skarmory depending on which Z-Crystal Kartana is wielding, and they benefit from Kartana pressuring troublesome answers like Slowbro for Mega Charizard X and Chansey for Volcarona, paving the way for these teammates to finish the game. Mega Lopunny handles fast attackers like Tapu Koko and benefits from Swords Dance Kartana slicing through physical walls that it struggles to deal with like Slowbro, Zapdos, and Skarmory. Greninja is another solid teammate, especially for Kartana variants running Fightinium Z, since it provides Spikes support to put heavy pressure on bulky targets like Magearna and Mega Scizor, and it removes Fire-types like Volcarona and Mega Charizard X. Tapu Fini solidly answers fast Fighting-types like Mega Lopunny and Hawlucha and grants crucial support with Misty Terrain, allowing Kartana to set up without worrying about status from paralysis and Scald burns. Heatran sets Stealth Rock, utilizes its solid bulk to handle faster special attackers like Tapu Koko and Choice Scarf Tapu Lele, and threatens opposing Steel-types for Kartana sets not running Fightinium Z. Magnezone traps and gets rid of Skarmory, Celesteela, and Mega Scizor, giving Kartana more room to drop Fightinium Z for another Z-Crystal.
