Weavile enhances the matchup against Dragon-types such as Dragapult and Garchomp, while Tyranitar handles Kyurem for Weavile. Mandibuzz forms a solid defensive backbone with Tyranitar for Dark teams. As it takes neutral damage from Bug- and Fighting-type attacks, Mandibuzz can take on such attacks directed at Tyranitar, while Tyranitar can comfortably tank BoltBeam coverage with its excellent special bulk. Moreover, Mandibuzz provides Toxic and Defog; the former allows Tyranitar to run Thunder Wave freely and the latter prevents entry hazards from damaging Tyranitar. Hydreigon is a fantastic wallbreaker that can handle Steel-types such as Ferrothorn and Skarmory, as well as directly switching into Water- and Grass-type moves for Tyranitar. Mandibuzz and Hydreigon also provide Ground immunities for Tyranitar. Sand Stream benefits bulky Ground-types like Seismitoad and Gastrodon by increasing their recovery with Shore Up and also enables Sand Rush sweepers like Excadrill and Dracozolt. If Tyranitar is paired up with a lot of Pokemon that benefit from Sand Stream, Smooth Rock could be considered over Leftovers. Teammates to help mitigate Tyranitar's weakness to Water- and Ground-types like Toxapex, Ferrothorn, and Rotom-W are valuable. The EV spread lets it outspeed Corviknight and optimizes Attack and HP.

Tyranitar is an incredibly threatening wallbreaker thanks to its high Attack stat and powerful attacking moves. It can also be used to pick off faster foes like Salamence, Thundurus-T, and Weavile. Spikes can be run to take advantage of the free turns Tyranitar generates by forcing out opposing Pokemon. Taunt is another option to prevent checks such as Clefable and Seismitoad from recovering. The EV spread lets it outspeed uninvested Buzzwole while optimizing its bulk and reducing Life Orb recoil. Walls like Mudsdale and Seismitoad are great for switching into foes that get a free switch in when Tyranitar tries to mitigate chip damage with Shore Up. Entry hazard removers like Clefable and Tornadus-T are also great for helping Tyranitar's longevity throughout longer games. Tyranitar breaking through common defensive Pokemon makes it an excellent teammate alongside fast cleaners like Cinderace, Aerodactyl, and Zeraora.

Choice Band makes Tyranitar a fierce wallbreaker, taking full advantage of its powerful STAB combination. Knock Off is incredibly difficult to switch into unless it's resisted. Beat Up can be used to significantly damage Skarmory, Ferrothorn, and Toxapex without taking chip from Rocky Helmet and Iron Barbs. However, it's a very team specific move, as it needs to be paired up with teammates that have a high Attack stat to function. Pivots to help safely bring Tyranitar onto the field are very important, as it lacks any recovery. Toxapex, Tornadus-T, and Seismitoad can all help pivot in Tyranitar safely into foes like Reuniclus, Zapdos, and Gastrodon. Future Sight support from Slowking and Galarian Slowking is also appreciated to help it break through physical walls like Buzzwole and Mudsdale.

Stone Edge and Crunch threaten consistent damage in conjunction with sand to wear down the opponent. They also hit several common Pokemon like Kyurem-B, Volcanion, Mew, and Necrozma for super effective damage. Ice Beam OHKOes Landorus with the Special Attack investment. Ice Punch is the preferred fourth move to hit Ground-types like Landorus-T, Garchomp, and Zygarde-10%, but Tyranitar can also run Stealth Rock if the team lacks a setter. Heavy-Duty Boots prevents Tyranitar from being worn down by entry hazards, while Lum Berry can save it from an untimely burn or paralysis from the likes of Rotom-W and Clefable. Smooth Rock supports teammates like Excadrill and Dracozolt on sand teams. Tyranitar can receive Speed from fast gods like Zamazenta-C or more middle-of-the-road ones like Yveltal. Tyranitar can force out many Fire- and Flying-types like Ho-Oh, Victini, Galarian Moltres, and Tornadus-T, which is greatly appreciated by Grass-types like Rillaboom, Ferrothorn, and Tangrowth. Tyranitar's +1 Stone Edge does massive damage to much of tier, which helps wallbreaking teammates like Tapu Koko, Weavile, and Zeraora clean up teams. Those same Pokemon can also weaken the opposing team enough for Tyranitar to act as a fast and powerful wincon. Slowking is an excellent teammate, as it can slow pivot Tyranitar in to preserve its HP, provide Future Sight support, and switch into Zamazenta-C and Urshifu-R, which tank all of Tyranitar's moves and can easily KO it. Other Fighting-type answers such as Landorus-T and Clefable also make great teammates, as they can also run Stealth Rock for Tyranitar to freely run Ice Punch. Rillaboom is extremely threatening with its high powered Grassy Glide that bypasses Tyranitar's Speed, so Pokemon that can take it out like Tornadus-T and Victini, or switch into it like Skarmory and Corviknight, make great teammates. Ferrothorn, Skarmory, and Bisharp can comfortably survive all of Tyranitar's moves even at +1 and hit back hard in return, so teammates that can threaten them out like Ho-Oh are good teammates. Dragon Dance Tyranitar forms an excellent offensive core with Dracozolt and Excadrill, with the latter two wreaking havoc on the opponent's defensive core and allowing Tyranitar to clean later, while Tyranitar can surprise and weaken Landorus-T with Ice Punch for them.

Tyranitar uses its typing and Sand Stream-boosted bulk to become a very capable specially defensive wall. Tyranitar can take advantage of the many special attackers it forces out like Blacephelon and Galarian Moltres by setting up Stealth Rock. On sand teams, Smooth Rock maximizes Sand Stream turns to support Sand Rush sweepers like Dracozolt and Excadrill. Tyranitar benefits from receiving Special Defense from bulky gods like Necrozma-DM, Zamazenta-C, and Ho-Oh to turn it into a bulky tank. It can, however, still handle its primary targets in Galarian Moltres and Yveltal without a Special Defense donation, letting it take a dump stat, usually Speed. Many Pokemon that are threatened by Blacephelon such as Ferrothorn, Necrozma-DM, and Victini appreciate Tyranitar's ability to switch into Blacephelon's attacks. Similarly, Tyranitar is one of the best Galarian Moltres checks around, being able to switch in repeatedly and force it out, which is greatly appreciated by Psychic-types like Slowking, Galarian Slowking, and Necrozma-DM. Tyranitar is highly vulnerable to Urshifu-R, so Pokemon that can switch into it like Slowking and Tapu Fini are great partners. Pokemon like Corviknight and Skarmory are also great partners, as they can switch into Ground-type moves that threaten Tyranitar, as well as Grass-type threats like Rillaboom and Kartana. Dracozolt and Excadrill become a formidable offensive core when paired with Tyranitar's Sand Stream, and have the added benefit of beating Pokemon like Urshifu-R and Clefable respectively. If Tyranitar is running Rest, it needs cleric support from Pokemon like Clefable.

In 2v2 Doubles, Tyranitar primarily plays the role of a Tailwind beneficiary. Its convenient Speed tier, high Attack stat, and good coverage moves allow it to OHKO many prevalent Pokemon such as Pheromosa, Genesect, Naganadel, and Kyurem-B. Its typing allows it to deal with metagame staples such as Victini and Incineroar defensively. Secondarily, it provides utility by targeting the main redirectors in Indeedee-F and Togekiss, as well as negating foes' Berries with Unnerve—this is very important in 2v2 Doubles due to many Pokemon like Zygarde, Kyurem-B, Indeedee-F, and Togekiss using Berries. Tyranitar's Unnerve allows Pheromosa to OHKO Chople Berry Kyurem-B and Tanga Berry Indeedee-F. Genesect is similarly able to OHKO Tanga Berry Indeedee with the help of Unnerve. Tyranitar's ability to OHKO two of the metagame's best Follow Me users helps teammates that struggle against redirection such as Dracovish and Naganadel. Tyranitar benefits from Talonflame's Gale Wings Tailwind, or from other fast Tailwind setters such as Naganadel, since Tyranitar outspeeds Pheromosa, Genesect, Kyurem-B, Naganadel, and Cinderace under Tailwind and OHKOes them all. Tyranitar pairs especially well with Talonflame, which can OHKO threats to Tyranitar such as Rillaboom and Amoonguss—a redirection user that Tyranitar cannot OHKO. Tyranitar also pairs well with redirection, since it has many common weaknesses. For this reason, Indeedee-F, Togekiss, and Amoonguss are all good partners.

Crunch is Tyranitar’s most spammable move due to the tiers‘s lack of sturdy Dark-resistant Pokemon, and it also KOes Pokemon like Mega Latias and Slowbro that can live a Stone Edge comfortably and retaliate. Pursuit lets Tyranitar trap Ghost- and Psychic-types that it forces out, such as Aegislash and Mega Latias. It can also trap Choice-locked Ash-Greninja, Tapu Lele, Chansey, and Zapdos, which otherwise can‘t threaten it back. Superpower lets Tyranitar immediately threaten a KO on Chansey, which can otherwise use Soft-boiled to scout its move, and also hits Ferrothorn and Heatran hard. Fire Punch OHKOes Mega Scizor and Ferrothorn without risking a Stone Edge miss or getting chipped multiple times by Iron Barbs. Earthquake lets Mega Tyranitar nail Heatran, Mega Mawile, and Magnezone without dropping its Attack and Defense, and it gives it near-perfect neutral coverage. The given EV spread allows Tyranitar to outspeed Adamant Mega Mawile, always live a +1 Bug Buzz from Volcarona, and always survive Choice Specs Tapu Lele Moonblast. Tyranitar fits best on bulky offense teams that appreciate it breaking holes in opposing teams and Pursuit trapping key threats such as Mega Latias and Reuniclus. It works best with partners that appreciate it Pursuit trapping their checks, such as Mega Charizard Y, Mega Latias, and Calm Mind Clefable. Teammates such as Amoonguss and Tapu Fini that can deal with pesky Water-types such as Ash Greninja and Rotom-W, help Tyranitar—so do Pokemon that can handle Grass-types like Rillaboom and Kartana, such as Corviknight and Tangrowth. Partners that can manage Fighting-types such as Mega Medicham and Mega Lopunny are also appreciated, so Clefable and Reuniclus are great with it. Skarmory and Mega Latias can deal with Ground-types such as Landorus-T and Garchomp. Excadrill benefits greatly from Tyranitar providing sand and wearing down the bulky Grass- and Flying-types that normally check it, such as Tangrowth, Corviknight, and Landorus-T. Teammates that can stack entry hazards such as Ferrothorn and Skarmory appreciate Tyranitar being great against the majority of the tier‘s hazard removal.

Mega Tyranitar's powerful STAB moves, excellent bulk, and access to Pursuit establish it as one of National Dex's premier Stealth Rock setters. Stone Edge threatens Defoggers such as Zapdos and Corviknight, keeping its Stealth Rock on the field. Pursuit traps pesky Ghost- and Psychic-types such as Aegislash, Reuniclus, and Mega Latias. Additionally, Mega Tyranitar can use its phenomal bulk and typing to Pursuit trap Zapdos, Heatran, Blissey, and Choice-locked Tapu Lele and Ash-Greninja. Crunch lets Mega Tyranitar threaten bulky Psychic-types, such as Reuniclus and Mega Latias. It also pressures Aegislash in Shield forme. Sand Stream enables powerful teammates in Excadrill and Dracozolt. 168 Speed EVs allow Mega Tyranitar to outspeed neutral-natured Aegislash and Magnezone. A very lacking defensive typing means that Mega Tyranitar needs to be paired with strong checks to a variety of dangerous threats, which include Mega Lopunny, Mega Medicham, Mega Mawile, Gliscor, Landorus-T, and Garchomp. Strong defensive cores with Mega Tyranitar often include Toxapex, Reuniclus, Skarmory, Melmetal, and Tangrowth. Reuniclus and Toxapex in particular are incredible teammates, as they appreciate Mega Tyranitar's ability to Pursuit trap Mega Latias, Reuniclus, and Heatran. Skarmory can form a powerful entry hazard stacking core with it, as it checks offensive Ground-types like Gliscor, Garchomp, and Landorus-T. Other sturdy checks to Ground-type Pokemon such as Corviknight, Tangrowth, and Landorus-T synergize well with Mega Tyranitar. Toxapex, Tangrowth, and Ferrothorn are solid insurance against Water-types like Ash-Greninja and Tapu Fini. On dedicated sand teams, Mega Tyranitar's Sand Stream enables the terrifying Sand Rush duo of Excadrill and Dracozolt. Excadrill in particular can handle Calm Mind Clefable, which would otherwise use Mega Tyranitar as an setup fodder. Excadrill and Corviknight can also remove entry hazards, which severely cut into Mega Tyranitar's longevity.

While facing stiff competition from Yveltal, Tyranitar is able to hold its own due to its fantastic sand-boosted special bulk and typing, which let it switch reliably into Calyrex-S, Yveltal, Ho-Oh, Eternatus, and Lunala, while being a valuable entry hazard setter with Stealth Rock. Rock Blast is chosen over other Rock-type STAB moves to beat SubSeed Calyrex-S while still forcing Yveltal out. Foul Play deters some physical attackers such as Zacian-C, Marshadow, and Groudon from switching in or setting up on Tyranitar. Thunder Wave is similarly useful, but it trades the ability to deter Zygarde or Groudon from setting up for the ability to cripple Kyogre and Xerneas. Tyranitar lacks reliable recovery, so it has to use Rest to heal from the continuous attacks it will likely be taking, but this does let it absorb status from the likes of Toxic Ho-Oh, Toxic Eternatus, and Giratina. Leftovers makes Tyranitar need to use Rest less often, but Heavy-Duty Boots is another solid option to increase its longevity. Maximum Special Defense and HP investment gives it the best chances of beating Calyrex-S over a longer game, which is generally its most important role, and is overall helpful for most special attackers that can't immediately threaten it such as Eternatus and specially offensive Yveltal. Tyranitar's best fit is on balance teams that appreciate its ability to check Calyrex-S, Yveltal, and Eternatus while also providing Stealth Rock support. This Stealth Rock support also gives teammates the moveset freedom to exert more pressure, like Necrozma-DM running more offensive Dragon Dance sets. Tyranitar can be overwhelmed by a number of offensive Pokemon in the metagame such as Zacian-C, Kyogre, Xerneas, and Groudon. Teammates that can deal with these threats such as Necrozma-DM, Eternatus, Ferrothorn, and Lunala, respectively, are all useful. Eternatus can additionally outspeed threats like Marshadow and Zygarde-C and deal with them with Dynamax Cannon while limiting opposing Necrozma-DM due to its good bulk and Pressure. Ferrothorn also switches into Kyogre reliably. Zacian-C can pressure Xerneas and revenge kill offensive Pokemon like weakened Groudon. It also appreciates sand weakening Necrozma-DM's recovery and Stealth Rock powering up Assurance, which makes Necrozma-DM lacking Heavy-Duty Boots struggles to switch into Zacian-C. Quagsire is a more reliable of way of dealing with Zacian-C than Necrozma-DM when paired with Tyranitar, as its recovery is not hindered by sand, but it can only find a place on bulky balance and stall teams. Offensive Excadrill requires Tyranitar as a teammate to work reliably, although Tyranitar does not require it.

Tyranitar's great bulk and unique defensive typing let it check a bunch of scary threats such as Yveltal, Ho-Oh, Mega Gengar, Eternatus, and Mewtwo. Pursuit allows Tyranitar to trap Pokemon that it forces out, such as Mega Gengar, Mewtwo, and Choice item variants of Mega Rayquaza, as well as break Lunala's Shadow Shield if it tries to switch out. A Rock-type move is recommended in order to check Yveltal properly and to force out Ho-Oh; Rock Tomb is chosen for its Speed-lowering effect, which neutralizes Max Airstream users like Yveltal, Mewtwo, and Thundurus-T and preserves momentum against faster threats like Zacian-C and Eternatus. Foul Play deals major damage to Zacian-C and offensive Primal Kyogre, deterring them from switching in freely, as well as threats Tyranitar is supposed to check like Mega Gengar, Mewtwo, and, if running Shuca Berry, Mega Rayquaza and Ultra Necrozma. Alternatively, Stealth Rock is a decent option due to Tyranitar's good matchup against common Defoggers like Ho-Oh and Lunala. Rest gives Tyranitar a source of recovery and lets it shrug off status ailments like Toxic poison from Ho-Oh, Eternatus, and Lunala. Roar allows Tyranitar to phaze non-Dynamaxed setup sweepers like Vivillon, prevents Geomancy Xerneas from setting up on it, and racks up entry hazard damage. Leftovers reduces the need for Tyranitar to use Rest by giving it passive recovery, which is helpful because it's very prone to chip damage from entry hazards and status ailments. Alternatively, Tyranitarite is a decent option if none of Tyranitar's teammates are using a Mega Stone, as it gives Tyranitar significantly more bulk and power at the cost of being unable to Dynamax. Chople Berry reduces the damage taken from Fighting-type attacks such as Focus Blast from Mega Gengar and Yveltal. Shuca Berry allows Tyranitar to survive a boosted hit from physical attackers such as Mega Rayquaza, Ultra Necrozma, and Extreme Killer Arceus; this item should be used alongside Foul Play. The EV spread maximizes special bulk for threats such as Yveltal, Mega Gengar, and Eternatus. Shuca Berry can optionally be used with a physically defensive spread to take on the aforementioned physical attackers better. Tyranitar is a good fit on balanced teams that can accommodate its many weaknesses. Defensive Necrozma-DM is an excellent partner, as it is able to handle Zacian-C and check Xerneas, and it appreciates Tyranitar's ability to deal with Yveltal, Ho-Oh, and Eternatus in return. Note that sand limits Morning Sun's recovery, however. Arceus-Ground is able to check Primal Groudon and Zygarde-C well, while Tyranitar can deal with Ho-Oh and Yveltal. Ferrothorn and Primal Groudon are able to check Primal Kyogre; Ferrothorn in particular provides Spikes support, allowing Tyranitar to rack up more damage on the opposing team with Roar, and can use Knock Off on Ho-Oh, letting Tyranitar pressure said foe with Stealth Rock. Primal Groudon can run Stealth Rock, freeing up a moveslot on Tyranitar. Ditto is a great partner that makes up for Tyranitar's lackluster matchup versus offense, while wallbreakers such as Xerneas, Yveltal, Zacian-C, and Primal Kyogre can help to pressure bulky teams that Tyranitar struggles to dent.

Tyranitar plays a pivotal role for Dark teams by acting as the primary Stealth Rock setter, helping break Focus Sash and Sturdy for its teammates and being able to tank most special attacks thanks to having a boosted Special Defense in sand. Rock Slide lets it take care of many threats to Dark teams such as Volcarona, Tornadus-T, and Mega Charizard Y. Heavy Slam gives Tyranitar the ability to take on Tapu Lele and Hatterene, while Fire Blast hits most Steel-type physical walls such as Ferrothorn, Skarmory, and Mega Scizor that would otherwise wall Tyranitar. Tyranitar can cripple faster foes that don't get OHKOed by Rock Slide with Thunder Wave such as Latios and Dragonite. Leftovers gives Tyranitar some passive recovery that increases its longevity. Maximum HP and Special Defense gives Tyranitar as much special bulk as possible, allowing it to tank almost any unboosted special attack in sand. Sassy nature is preferred if Fire Blast is chosen over Heavy Slam. All of Tyranitar's teammates appreciate Stealth Rock and Thunder Wave support. Hydreigon especially helps in the Poison and Steel matchups as a Substitute + Nasty Plot sweeper or a faster teammate for an edge in the Dragon matchup. Mega Sableye is a great choice as a Mega Evolution and can act in tandem with Tyranitar, since it is immune to Fighting and can keep entry hazards off your side of the field while spreading burns with Will-O-Wisp. Greninja can be geared to help in any matchup and runs a variety of different sets including Choice Specs, Choice Scarf, Grassium-Z, Icium-Z or Expert Belt. Choice Specs is particularly helpful in the Dragon and Flying matchups, while Grassium-Z is great in the Water and Ground matchups. Icium-Z helps break defensive Celesteela after an Ice Beam, and Extrasensory with Expert Belt can break through Toxapex and Mega Venusaur, which give Tyranitar a lot of trouble. Choice Scarf Greninja can revenge kill opposing Choice Scarf users such as Latios, Latias, and Landorus-T as well as Mega Aerodactyl. Toxic Spikes can be fitted into any of these sets to support entry hazard stacking. Mandibuzz can help check physical setup sweepers such as Dragonite and Mega Scizor, and is also able to clear entry hazards with Defog. Alolan Muk is extremely helpful with taking on pesky Fairy-types and can take advantage of Fairy teams' passive Pokemon such as Klefki to set up with Curse. Zarude is another great teammate that gives an edge in the Water and Ground matchups since it becomes very dangerous after one or two Bulk Ups, and Weavile could be helpful versus Flying with its hard hitting STAB Ice-type attacks. Bisharp is a strong physical attacker that can set up with Swords Dance and provides great priority in Sucker Punch.

With great defensive stats and movepool, Tyranitar makes a good choice for a Stealth Rock setter. Rock Tomb may be weak, but its Speed control is invaluable. Foul Play gets around Tyranitar's potential lack of Attack investment, and notably OHKOs +2 offensive Mimikyu. Taunt lets Tyranitar punish passive Pokemon, such as slower Stealth Rock setters and Porygon2. Earthquake is Tyranitar's best attack against foes such as Heatran, Naganadel, and Nihilego. Thunder Wave provides a more extreme Speed control option, that effectively punishes fast set up sweepers such as Naganadel. Items Leftovers allows Tyranitar to stick around for a long time, and works particularly well with Taunt. Focus Sash lets Tyranitar get away with a more offensive EV spread, and potentially punish foes that are otherwise safe against it with status such as Cinderace and Urshifu-S. EV Spreads 252 HP / 252 SpD / 4 Spe with Careful: This spread makes Tyranitar as specially bulky as possible, good for special threats such as Zapdos. 84 HP / 140 Atk / 28 Def / 4 SpD / 252 Spe with Jolly: This spread is perfect for Focus Sash Tyranitar, maximizing its Speed to take advantage of Speed control, while ensuring that Tyranitar survives Play Rough + Shadow Sneak from Life Orb Mimikyu.

With Dragon Dance, Tyranitar patches up its poor Speed stat, allowing it to be a competent and bulky sweeper with a variety of coverage options. Stone Edge is Tyranitar's most powerful STAB with good neutral coverage, but Rock Blast should be considered as well for breaking through Disguise and Focus Sash. Iron Head gives Tyranitar the valuable Max Steelspike when Dynamaxed, which is extremely useful against Mimikyu. Earthquake gives Tyranitar the useful Max Quake for boosting its Special Defense while Dynamaxed, and is also Tyranitar's best option against threats such as Nihilego, Naganadel, and Heatran. Crunch offers good neutral coverage and lets Tyranitar break past Cresselia, and when combined with Iron Head, lets +1 Dynamax Tyranitar potentially beat Dynamax Metagross via Weakness Policy boosts. Ice Punch is Tyranitar's best option against Landorus-T, and deals plenty of damage to Hippowdon while Dynamaxed as well. Fire Punch, when Dynamaxed, deals more damage to Celesteela and Ferrothorn than any other attack as Max Flare. Items Weakness Policy pairs well with Max Steelspike and Max Quake, and takes advantage of Tyranitar's great bulk while Dynamaxed. Lum Berry protects Tyranitar against status moves such as Yawn and Will-O-Wisp, potentially surprising more passive way to stop a Tyranitar sweep. EV Spreads 252 HP / 68 Atk / 188 Spe with Jolly: This allows +1 Tyranitar to outspeed up to Adamant Cinderace and Timid Nihilego, while retaining a lot of bulk. 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Spe with Jolly: This spread maximizes Tyranitar's Speed and bulk. 84 HP / 204 Atk / 28 Def / 4 SpD / 188 Spe with Jolly: This is a far more offensive approach to the set. The EVs allow Tyranitar to survive a Life Orb Play Rough + Shadow Sneak from Mimikyu, and outspeed Timid Nihilego and Adamant Cinderace after a Dragon Dance.

Superpower lets Tyranitar boost its attack while Dynamaxed with Max Knuckle, and deals insane damage to opposing Tyranitar. Fire Punch allows Tyranitar to roast Ferrothorn, and when Dynamaxed, Max Flare is Tyranitar's most powerful attack against Celesteela. Items Weakness Policy takes advantage of Tyranitar's large amount of weaknesses, letting it win one-on-one against a wide variety of Pokemon once it gets an Attack boost. Assault Vest enhances Tyranitar's ability to check special attackers, most notably making Tyranitar an excellent check to Naganadel. EV Spreads 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe with Adamant: This spread maximizes Tyranitar's power and bulk. 244 HP / 52 Atk / 212 Def with Adamant: This EV spread allows +1 Defense Dynamax Tyranitar to avoid a 2HKO from +2 Life Orb Mimikyu's Play Rough, and also lets Dynamax Tyranitar survive Life Orb Cinderace's Max Knuckle.

Moves Rock Tomb slows down faster foes like Dragonite and Magnezone, allowing Mega Tyranitar to move first and KO them afterwards. Also, Rock Tomb's high accuracy means it is more reliable compared to Tyranitar's other Rock-type STAB moves. Fire Punch helps defeat Steel-type Pokemon like Genesect, Ferrothorn, and Celesteela. Earthquake is used to KO some Steel-types like Magnezone and Heatran. Taunt is also an option against stall Pokemon like Jumpluff, Deoxys-S, and Type: Null. Superpower allows Mega Tyranitar to defeat certain some Normal- and Dark-type Pokemon like Porygon-Z and opposing Mega Tyranitar, while Crunch could be used as another STAB move to defeat Psychic-type Pokemon like Meloetta. Set Details 248 HP and 72 Defense EVs allow Mega Tyranitar to two Outrages from maximum Attack Mega Charizard X. 56 Special Defense EVs alongside the Special Defense boost from Sand Stream help it to tank a Bug Buzz from Download-boosted Choice Specs Genesect and a Hydro Cannon from Choice Specs Greninja. The remaining 132 EVs are put into Attack, which, when coupled with an Adamant nature, helps Mega Tyranitar KO Pokemon like Mega Charizard X, Mega Charizard Y, Magnezone, Genesect, and Heatran. Usage Tips Against pre-Mega Charizard, you don't need to predict whether you're facing the X or Y mega variant; if it is Mega Charizard Y, Rock Tomb KOes it, and if it is Mega Charizard X, a follow-up Earthquake will usually KO it. When matched up against Choice Specs Greninja, start off with Fire Punch. If Greninja uses Hydro Cannon, you can knock it out the next turn with Earthquake, but if Greninja used Grass Knot, Fire Punch along with Sandstorm usually OHKOes it. Against Magnezone, always use Rock Tomb followed by Earthquake, since Magnezone has Sturdy as its ability. Against stall Pokemon like Jumpluff, Deoxys-S, and Mega Slowbro, Mega Evolve Tyranitar after five turns to maximize sand damage. If you have Taunt, always start off by using Taunt against Jumpluff and Type: Null, but against Deoxys-S, start off by using Rock Tomb, and after four uses of Rock Tomb, use Taunt. At this point, Mega Tyranitar outspeeds Deoxys-S and can force it to Struggle with Taunt. When up against Slowbro, if Tyranitar has Crunch and Taunt, use Crunch on the first turn. If Slowbro was Mega Evolved, use Taunt to block its recovery, but if Slowbro was not, use Crunch again, since Slowbro's ability Oblivious blocks Taunt. Team Options Since Mega Tyranitar is weak to Ground-type attacks from Pokemon like Garchomp, Landorus-T, Donphan, and Golem, bulky Pokemon like Mega Heracross and fast Pokemon like Mega Gyarados can be paired to counter said threats. These Pokemon can take advantage of Mega Tyranitar's ability to KO their common counters like bulky Mega Charizard Y. Since Fighting-type Pokemon like Mega Lopunny, Mega Medicham, Mega Blaziken, and Mega Heracross can KO Mega Tyranitar easily, Fairy-type Pokemon like Magearna and Primarina fare well as teammates. In this case, Primarina is the better option, since it can additionally be used to KO Sturdy users and lure Magnezone for Mega Tyranitar to defeat. Since Mega Tyranitar is vulnerable to physically defensive Pokemon like Mega Venusaur, Mega Sableye, Mega Aggron, and Pyukumuku, stallbreakers like Mega Charizard Y and Mega Gardevoir are solid team options. Since Mega Tyranitar is weak to bulky Water-type Pokemon like Mega Gyarados, Primarina, Mega Swampert, and Tapu Fini, bulky Grass-type Pokemon like Mega Venusaur and Ferrothorn can be used. In turn, these Pokemon appreciate Mega Tyranitar taking care of their Fire- and Flying-type weaknesses.

Moves Pursuit allows Tyranitar to trap prominent threats like Mega Gengar and Mega Mewtwo Y while preventing weakened or sleeping Gothitelle from causing further damage to the team after it trapped and neutralized one of Tyranitar's teammates. Note that this set will lack sufficient power to immediately remove Giratina-O and will fail to guarantee Mega Gengar's removal after getting burned by Will-O-Wisp if not holding Lum Berry. Rock Tomb allows Tyranitar to slow down switch-ins, potentially allowing its teammates to deal with them better. It also improves Tyranitar's effectiveness as a check to Arceus-Dark and bulky Arceus-Flying, both of which can potentially set up on this set. Rock Slide provides Tyranitar an alternative countermeasure against Flying-types it checks, letting it threaten to OHKO Ho-Oh and take out offensive Yveltal and Rayquaza after Stealth Rock damage. Foul Play can assist in alleviating this set's passivity by harshly punishing threats like Primal Groudon and Necrozma-DM that attempt to use Tyranitar as setup fodder. If Tyranitar is wielding Shuca or Chople Berry, Foul Play also allows it to better check Earthquake Ultra Necrozma, Lunala, and Mega Mewtwo Y, OHKOing Lunala with its Shadow Shield broken and taking out Mega Mewtwo Y after Stealth Rock damage. Note that this variant of Tyranitar can survive a Sunsteel Strike from Adamant Necrozma-DM and punish it with Foul Play, and Extreme Killer Arceus is hit much harder by Foul Play if it has Swords Dance boosts. Ice Beam allows Tyranitar to dispose of Mega Salamence quicker and hit Zygarde harder. Against Giratina-O with Will-O-Wisp, this move is the best attack to use. However, it is important to note that forgoing Rock Slide for this move means that Tyranitar will rely on Toxic and sandstorm damage to check Yveltal, will be set up on Extreme Killer Arceus using Substitute, and will no longer check Ho-Oh effectively. Earthquake is a niche option to consider to offensively check Naganadel, hit Primal Groudon hard, and OHKO Lucario on the switch. Toxic improves Tyranitar's otherwise disappointing matchup against Xerneas and support Arceus formes by putting them on a timer as they switch in and wearing them down quickly in conjunction with sandstorm damage. It also punishes other offensive checks like Primal Groudon and Zygarde on the switch. Thunder Wave's ability to slow down a threat and annoy Steel-types makes it a good status move as well, but Toxic generally proves to be a better way to punish the likes of support Arceus forms in the long run. To pressure Mega Salamence and Ho-Oh and benefit teammates like Primal Groudon and Necrozma-DM, Tyranitar can possibly run Stealth Rock to compress a role of pivot and entry hazard setter, though its worsened passivity can be detrimental. Rest is Tyranitar's only option of recovery that can fully restore its health and remove status, but it is going to be inefficient without cleric support due to Tyranitar being left vulnerable for two turns. Set Details The given EV spread with an Adamant nature allows Tyranitar to survive two +1 Double-Edges from Adamant Mega Salamence, take +1 Focus Blast from Lunala after Stealth Rock with Chople Berry intact, and threaten a good number of Flying-types with Rock Slide. Defensive Ho-Oh is almost always taken out by Rock Slide after sandstorm damage, Mega Salamence and maximum HP Arceus-Flying are 2HKOed with Stealth Rock on the field, and offensive Yveltal and Rayquaza are OHKOed after Stealth Rock. 36 Speed EVs enable Tyranitar to outspeed Gothitelle, letting it pick off weakened ones without getting afflicted by Charm. A Brave nature with no investment in Speed should be used when running Ice Beam. Lum Berry is used to avoid getting burned by Mega Gengar's Will-O-Wisp once and ensure it is removed from play. It also has a situational use in making Tyranitar a better switch-in to the rare Darkrai. Chople Berry can be used to allow Tyranitar to survive a Focus Blast from threats like Mega Gengar, Lunala, and Mega Mewtwo Y. Assuming Tyranitar has switched into a different move, it will at least be able to survive said attack and retaliate to net heavy damage before it goes down. Shuca Berry is an option when Tyranitar is running Ice Beam to survive a boosted Thousand Arrows from Zygarde and KO back. Shuca Berry can also prove to be helpful with surviving a boosted Earthquake from Mega Salamence and Rayquaza. Leftovers can be used to provide Tyranitar with passive recovery and make it more resilient to weaker attacks and entry hazard damage. Usage Tips With bulkier investment, this variant of Tyranitar can switch into resisted attacks more freely. Once given a switch, Tyranitar will be given a turn to use one of its utility options before it is forced out by an incoming offensive threat. Setting Stealth Rock is mostly an ideal decision, as this will start wearing down the opposing team and help to identify a Defog user, which Tyranitar will aim to cripple with Toxic. Unless there is no other Pokemon that can do so, be wary of switching into super effective attacks from foes that Tyranitar will normally check. Even with Chople Berry intact, Tyranitar can be 2HKOed on the switch by Focus Blast from Lunala and Mega Mewtwo Y. If a foe that Tyranitar is tasked to take on can beat it one-on-one, aim to put it on a timer with Toxic or at least land an attack before Tyranitar is KOed. Dangerous threats like Mega Gengar, Lunala, and Mega Mewtwo Y should be disposed of if given a chance to do so. An opponent will switch in an offensive check afterwards, and if Tyranitar is no longer needed, set Stealth Rock or put a foe on timer with Toxic before it is KOed. However, against threats like Zygarde and Arceus-Ground that can use Tyranitar as setup fodder behind Substitute, be quick to switch out to a check or at least prevent them from getting excessive boosts with Ice Beam. Tyranitar cannot trap a healthy Gothitelle, as it is bulky enough to survive Pursuit a few times and neutralize Tyranitar. The best moment to use Tyranitar to ensure its removal is when it is asleep after using Rest or has been sufficiently worn down after trapping a teammate. Depending on what coverage move Tyranitar carries, it may land a surprise blow on threats like Necrozma-DM and Mega Lucario that assume Tyranitar is too passive to prevent them from setting up. If Tyranitar has already trapped a foe or does not check anything in particular, take a risk to prevent said foes from becoming too threatening. Team Options Some balanced teams can still benefit from this variant of Tyranitar, as the ability to compress the roles of a status user, a Flying-type check, a Pursuit trapper, and possibly a Stealth Rock setter is nearly exclusive to it. Due to this set's lack of offensive presence, it will demand stronger security to Fairy-, Fighting-, and Ground-types, as they will freely take advantage of Tyranitar after it Pursuit trapped a foe or set Stealth Rock on the switch. Primal Groudon and Necrozma-DM can benefit from Tyranitar pivoting into Yveltal, crippling support Arceus formes, and potentially allowing them to run varying sets by running Stealth Rock, and they patch up Tyranitar's defensive flaws in return. Both of them are secure checks to Xerneas and can viably run many countermeasures to threaten defensive Pokemon like Ferrothorn and Celesteela and threaten defensive teams with Mega Sableye, which Tyranitar struggles to do much against. Mega Salamence appreciates having a Stealth Rock setter and a teammate that can cripple support Arceus formes. In return, it can take advantage of said utility to sweep with Dragon Dance or be a better check to Primal Groudon by opting for other moves like Defog. Xerneas can revenge kill various Fighting-types with a Choice Scarf set, cure Tyranitar of its status with Aromatherapy, and benefit from Tyranitar removing Mega Gengar and keeping Ho-Oh at bay with Stealth Rock. Offensive checks to Ground-types like Primal Kyogre and Arceus-Grass can pressure threats like Primal Groudon and Arceus-Ground, and this form of offensive pressure is needed due to Tyranitar lacking enough offensive presence by itself. Various support Arceus formes can fit alongside Tyranitar depending on what weakness has to be patched up with the rest of the team. They can also opt for sets with Special Attack investment to help against teams with Mega Sableye by setting Stealth Rock against them. As this set can guarantee Mega Gengar's removal with Lum Berry assuming Mega Gengar lacks Focus Blast, various Pokemon commonly employed in defensive teams can benefit from Tyranitar. Primary examples of these include Chansey that checks Fairy-types and provides cleric support, Ferrothorn that checks Primal Kyogre, takes advantage of support Arceus formes, and sets Spikes, and Skarmory that can check certain Ground-types and also provide Spikes support.

Moves A Choice Band-boosted Stone Edge is notoriously difficult to safely switch into due to the small number of targets that resist it and can avoid getting punished by other attacks. Apart from heavily threatening Flying-types like Ho-Oh, Yveltal, and Mega Salamence, Stone Edge can net a 2HKO on bulky foes like Primal Groudon and force recovery moves from maximum HP support Arceus formes while putting a significant dent in Xerneas and having a high chance to OHKO Primal Kyogre after Stealth Rock damage. The damage output is also considerably threatening against defensive teams, as Pokemon like Arceus-Dark, Toxapex, and Skarmory are prone to getting 2HKOed after slight prior damage. Crunch has good coverage against a large portion of the tier with Stone Edge. Despite its slightly lower damage output, Crunch serves as the best way to hit common foes like Necrozma-DM and Giratina-O and is strong enough to do a good chunk of damage to resistant targets like Xerneas with sandstorm damage and force a recovery move from Arceus-Ground. Pursuit enables Tyranitar to net heavy damage on a target switching out, typically removing retreating Ghost- and Psychic-types from play. With Choice Band, Pursuit can also net good damage on neutral targets that attempt to avoid an unfavorable matchup against Tyranitar, guaranteeing a 2HKO on Blissey and OHKO on retreating Mega Gengar after getting burned. Superpower rounds out Tyranitar's coverage by hitting Steel-types hard. With Choice Band, Superpower can guarantee OHKO Ferrothorn and Dialga with minimal prior damage, threaten to OHKO maximum HP Arceus-Dark, and put a major dent on Magearna. It also immediately removes Chansey after Stealth Rock damage and harshly punishes Mega Lucario, should it attempt to switch into Tyranitar and set up on it. Ice Punch OHKOes offensive untransformed Zygarde and 2HKOes defensive Zygarde-C and Arceus-Ground. Ice Punch is also reliable against Flying-types like Mega Salamence and Rayquaza if missing Stone Edge against them will be a huge detriment. Note that forgoing Superpower for Ice Punch makes Magearna a reliable switch-in to this set. Earthquake provides Tyranitar with a stronger coverage option against Magearna and has the highest damage output against Primal Groudon. Superpower's main targets typically outweigh Earthquake's broad range of coverage, however. Persistent switch-ins like Arceus-Dark and Arceus-Ground can be crippled by Toxic, but this makes Tyranitar ineffective against Steel-types and getting locked into Toxic is not very ideal. Usage Tips Tyranitar can seek opportunities to come into the field by utilizing its nifty resistances to Dark and Ghost and immunity to Psychic. While Tyranitar's massive special bulk with sandstorm lets it easily take resisted attacks multiple times, this set must exercise some caution when pivoting into threats like Yveltal, Gengar, and Mega Mewtwo Y. Some variants of Yveltal can wear down Tyranitar with U-turn and proceed to create unfavorable matchups, and others can threaten it with Focus Blast. While it is also possible for Tyranitar to switch into a foe that cannot immediately threaten it, note that a number of Pokemon it can threaten can status it on the switch. This means Tyranitar may risk getting burned by Mega Gengar and Giratina-O's Will-O-Wisp and being put on a timer by Blissey's Toxic on the switch. Switching into Ho-Oh also involves a risk due to Toxic and a potential burn from Sacred Fire. Though Mega Gengar will still be taken out by burned Tyranitar and Blissey will be 2HKOed by Pursuit, Tyranitar will be much less effective when inflicted with burn or poison. Using sandstorm damage, Tyranitar can also limit suicide leads like Cloyster, Smeargle, and Deoxys-S to a single turn and pivot into Lunala to take any attack other than Focus Blast and break Shadow Shield, making it easier to deal with for teammates. Ideally, Choice Band Tyranitar will net as much damage as possible on offensive checks it draws in and be a solid pivot. Accomplishing both of these will be difficult due to Tyranitar's low Speed and its disadvantageous matchup against a myriad of common threats in the tier, forcing it to rely on a hit-and-run playstyle. Avoid being too reckless with switching in Tyranitar when reacting to offensive threats to the point where Tyranitar becomes too predictable. Almost every competitive team has a few Pokemon that can take advantage of Tyranitar if they have double switched in safely. Tyranitar will have more opportunities to dish out damage against slower and defensive teams. There may be problematic foes like support Arceus formes that can check Tyranitar, but an appropriate attack boosted by Choice Band is strong enough to force recovery from many defensive checks. Tyranitar can also KO or weaken Pokemon like Giratina formes and Blissey that attempt to avoid an unfavorable matchup and 2HKO bulky Pokemon like Skarmory and Toxapex with entry hazard support, so fully take advantage of its wallbreaking capabilities in such a matchup. Note that Tyranitar's bulk is also helpful for 2HKOing support Arceus formes on the switch after easily surviving a super effective Judgment. Trapping a threat with Pursuit can be a good decision even against foes that resist it. For example, an opponent with Yveltal will aim to wear down Tyranitar with repeated attacks if there are no other reliable checks available to the team. If Tyranitar successfully switched into an Yveltal that does not have a way to significantly threaten it, it can force the switch and do heavy damage with Pursuit. Factoring in sandstorm, Dark Aura, and Choice Band, Pursuit is strong enough to prevent Yveltal from switching into most attacks afterwards. Gothitelle will be a difficult foe to trap and even when Tyranitar successfully double switched into it, as Tyranitar will have to predict well to avoid getting locked into Pursuit as Gothitelle neutralizes it with Charm. Attempting to get Tyranitar in against Gothitelle is already risky considering how many Pokemon can threaten Tyranitar in a one-on-one situation, so do not aggressively attempt to trap it unless its removal is crucial for the team. Note that Pursuit trapping involves a risk. A Tyranitar locked into Pursuit is very exploitable and invites Pokemon like Primal Groudon, Zygarde, Xerneas, Marshadow, and Primal Kyogre, which can be dangerous when freely given momentum. Primal Groudon can threaten a myriad of Fairy- and Steel-types that will exploit Tyranitar lacking a proper coverage move to hit them or locked into a wrong move. Primal Groudon is also valuable for its ability to set Stealth Rock, check Xerneas and Primal Kyogre, and take advantage of Magearna. In return, Tyranitar removes Giratina-O and threatens Ho-Oh. Necrozma-DM can be useful for similar reasons, and offensive sets can have a better chance to break through the opposing team after Tyranitar weakened Primal Groudon and Steel-types. Mega Salamence can check Ground- and Fighting-types that take advantage of Tyranitar and pivot into Primal Groudon and Mega Lucario. All variants appreciate Tyranitar weakening Steel- and Fairy-types and potentially removing Zygarde by luring it and punishing it with Ice Punch. Other checks to Ground-types and Primal Groudon, such as support Arceus formes, Primal Kyogre, and Ho-Oh, all are options depending on the structure of the team. Support Arceus formes easily fit with Tyranitar and enjoy Tyranitar removing Blissey and Ferrothorn with appropriate attacks. Primal Kyogre can wear down Primal Groudon, checks Arceus-Ground, and pressure opposing support Arceus formes relatively well. Ho-Oh may be harder to fit, but it checks many support Arceus formes better, can handle certain variants of Primal Groudon, and can have Tyranitar deal with Mega Salamence, KO a lured Zygarde with Ice Punch, and threaten other Steel-types in return, as Tyranitar that forgoes other moves for Ice Punch will struggle against them. Toxapex can check many Fighting-types that tend to set up on Tyranitar, provide Toxic Spikes support, pivot into Toxic, and benefit from Tyranitar pressuring Mega Sableye and trapping Mega Gengar. Arceus-Grass is a niche yet effective partner thanks to its ability to threaten offensive teams with its various coverage options, check Zygarde, Primal Kyogre, and Arceus-Ground, and weaken Steel-types with Fire Blast should Tyranitar not have the right move to deal with them. Tyranitar makes a good pivot to Flying-types and can eliminate Mega Gengar and Gothitelle.

Nihilego can check Water- and Ground-types like Gastrodon and Garchomp with Grass Knot and Hidden Power Ice, respectively, as well as Grass-types like Tapu Bulu and Breloom with a STAB Sludge Wave. In return, Tyranitar can switch into Psychic-type attacks for Nihilego and give it a helpful Special Defense increase with sand, allowing it to take Toxapex and Suicune's Scalds better. Rhyperior and Alolan Golem are both able to check Mega Scizor for Tyranitar. Rhyperior can blanket check Fighting-types like Terrakion and Heracross and Ground-types like Excadrill and Dugtrio. Wait for Mega Tyranitar's checks, such as Choice Scarf Keldeo, to be removed before attempting to set up. Mega Tyranitar should switch out to a teammate such as Alolan Muk on all status-inducing moves, as all status conditions threaten it and hinder its ability to sweep. Since Mega Tyranitar is best used as a late-game cleaner, you should make sure it does not take too much damage to give it the best chance to sweep. Mega Tyranitar should be preserved to help check threats such as Kyurem-B and Volcarona before attempting to set up and sweep. If Stealth Rock is run, it should be used to capitalize on when Mega Tyranitar forces a switch, as this will give it a free turn to do so. Team Options Greninja acts as a nice blanket check to offensive Pokemon that threaten Mega Tyranitar due to its great coverage in moves like Gunk Shot to hit Fairy-types like Tapu Koko and Ice Beam to hit Ground-type Pokemon such as Garchomp. Greninja appreciates Mega Tyranitar's ability to take on special walls that wall it such as Chansey. Krookodile takes the role of Stealth Rock setter, allowing Tyranitar to run the Dragon Dance set. Krookodile can also remove items such as Greninja's Choice Scarf with Knock Off to ease Mega Tyranitar's attempts at sweeping and Taunt other slower leads such as Skarmory to prevent them from setting up Stealth Rock, allowing Mega Tyranitar to more easily set up. Mandibuzz is the best answer to Fighting-type teams when Mega Tyranitar is being used and can tank Fighting-type attacks such as Close Combat from Heracross and Terrakion. Mandibuzz can also clear away entry hazards with Defog so that Mega Tyranitar can more easily switch in through the match, and Mega Tyranitar can beat Ice- and Electric-type Pokemon such as Weavile and Tapu Koko for Mandibuzz. Alolan Muk is a nice switch-in to Fairy-type attacks and can remove items such as Hydreigon's Choice Specs with Knock Off, giving Mega Tyranitar an easier time setting up Dragon Dance. Hydreigon is a fantastic special wallbreaker that is capable of taking on physical walls that Mega Tyranitar has difficulty breaking past such as Ferrothorn and Quagsire. Bisharp can set Stealth Rock for Mega Tyranitar, which allows it to freely run Fire Punch, and can also paralyze faster threats such as Terrakion with Thunder Wave. Bisharp can also act as an excellent Swords Dance sweeper alongside Mega Tyranitar, as they both share similar checks and appreciate the other being able to wear them down.

Tyranitar is a great special sponge and should switch in on attacks it is not weak to, such as Kyurem-B's Ice Beam and Mega Pidgeot's Hurricane. Preserve Tyranitar against types like Flying and Normal, where it comes in handy against threats like Mega Charizard Y and Porygon-Z. Sand Stream can be used to chip Focus Sash and Multiscale users such as Breloom and Dragonite, allowing teammates to more easily revenge kill these Pokemon. Tyranitar should avoid status conditions, as they affect its longevity in battle due to lack of reliable recovery. For the same reason, it should also avoid switching into entry hazards and weak attacks that its teammates like Mandibuzz can take care of. Team Options Mandibuzz forms an entry hazard control core with Tyranitar and also possesses a Fighting-type neutrality, allowing it to switch into powerful STAB attacks such as Infernape's Close Combat. Mandibuzz also forms a nice defensive core with Tyranitar, as it is a fantastic physical wall. Mega Sableye possesses a Fighting-type immunity to support Tyranitar, can defend against Trick and Knock Off users that target Tyranitar, and can reflect hazards and status conditions with Magic Bounce such as Toxic Spikes from Toxapex and Toxic from Porygon2. Mega Sableye can also threaten physical attackers with Will-O-Wisp, leaving them unable to wallbreak successfully. Mega Sharpedo appreciates Tyranitar's ability to set up Stealth Rock, as it can clean more easily with the chip damage Stealth Rock provides. Mega Sharpedo can also take care of Fighting-types that Tyranitar struggles against such as Keldeo with Psychic Fangs at +1 Speed. Alolan Muk is a nice switch-in to Fairy-type attacks and can remove items such as Hydreigon's Choice Specs with Knock Off, giving Tyranitar an easier time setting up Stealth Rock. Greninja is a great Choice Scarf user, able to pivot Tyranitar in with U-turn, outspeed and OHKO Dragonite after Multiscale is broken, and revenge kill Tapu Bulu, and it also appreciates Tyranitar's ability to switch into strong special attackers such as Volcarona lacking Bug Buzz. Greninja can also form a hazard stacking core with Tyranitar, as it has access to Spikes and Toxic Spikes. Bisharp can break past Fairy-type Pokemon such as Klefki and Clefable for Tyranitar and threaten Defoggers such as Zapdos due to Defiant. This works best on teams with Trick Room support that allow Tyranitar to use a Brave nature for higher Special Attack, as Tyranitar would otherwise need to sacrifice bulk with a Lonely nature. Stealth Rock offers chip damage to threats that Tyranitar scares off the field like Zapdos, Kyurem-B, and Mega Charizard Y, punishing their pivoting. Finally, Protect helps Tyranitar with positional play. Tyranitar has multiple weaknesses, and the ability to avoid damage from super effective hits while its partner gets a free turn can be very advantageous. Set Details Maximum Attack allows Tyranitar to hit as hard as possible. With 76 EVs in Speed, Tyranitar will outpace uninvested Volcanion as well as Brave Hoopa-U, even if the latter has full Speed IVs. Teams with Tailwind support may prefer to bump this up to 160 EVs to outspeed Tapu Koko under Tailwind. While it may seem like a less-than-optimal use of a Mega stone for this set to be used on Mega Tyranitar, it actually finds a pretty solid niche. If a team does not need the burst damage of a Z move, or already employs a Z crystal on another Pokemon, while also having no other Pokemon capable of Mega Evolution, Mega Tyranitar can easily fit. When running a general offensive set, Mega Tyranitar benefits from all of greater bulk, greater Speed, and greater Attack than its normal forme, making it an easy choice on the appropriate teams. Usage Tips Tyranitar can take advantage of its solid bulk and resistances by acting as a pivot into dangerous Pokemon and threatening them out with its attacks. With Sand Stream, this ability to pivot is two-fold, as Tyranitar offers weather to either counter opposing weather or set its own for a teammate that benefits from sandy conditions. Mega Tyranitar has the added benefit of also using Sand Stream, meaning that it can delay Mega Evolution until the opponent’s weather summoning Pokemon is brought onto the field and block the attempt to control field conditions. Keep Tyranitar healthy if you need it as either a check to a specific threat or for weather management, as it’s generally useful throughout the game. Rockium Z sets only get one chance to use Continental Crush, so be careful to not waste it on a foe using Protect or one likely to switch out. Team Options Speed control helps Tyranitar attack first and eliminate targets with Continental Crush before they can retaliate with super effective moves. Zapdos and Mega Salamence can set up Tailwind, while Pokemon such as Hoopa-U and Porygon2 can reliably set up Trick Room. Terrakion and Scrafty, threatening Fighting-types, can be checked by Fairy-types, such as Tapu Koko, Tapu Lele, and Tapu Fini, or by Intimidate users, such as Landorus-T and Salamence. Water-types such as Tapu Fini and Milotic prevent Intimidate users such as Landorus-T from switching in. Partners to threaten Water-types, such as Tapu Koko, Zapdos, and Amoonguss, allow Tyranitar more freedom to maneuver. As speed control is crucial to Choice Band Tyranitar's success, one most important factor to consider is whether you want to use Choice Band Tyranitar with Tailwind or Trick Room support. In Tailwind teams, 88 HP / 252 Atk / 168 Spe with an Adamant nature allows Tyranitar to outspeed Rash Deoxys-A with Tailwind support, but the loss in bulk is noticeable. Being Adamant allows Tyranitar to outspeed foes outside of Trick Room, including uninvested base 60 Speed Pokemon like Aegislash and Celesteela, while still being slower than the majority of the metagame. Meanwhile, Brave Tyranitar is slower than opposing Trick Room attackers such as Heatran and Hoopa-U, OHKOing them when Trick Room is active before they do any damage to your team. Usage Tips Tyranitar can easily switch into attacks using its natural bulk and resistances. Thanks to its power and coverage options, Tyranitar can often surprise Pokemon with an unexpected amount of damage or a coverage move. For instance, it OHKOes Scrafty with Superpower, Landorus-T switch-ins with Ice Punch, and Zapdos with Stone Edge before it can match Tailwind. Such KOs can turn the game drastically. Therefore, good information management and successful predictions are crucial to Tyranitar's success. Choice Band Rock Slide and Crunch are hard to switch into and let Tyranitar break defensive cores more easily without the need to predict with super effective moves. Due to Tyranitar's low Speed and numerous weaknesses, proper speed control and positional play with its partner become imperative for Tyranitar to not be dead weight. The lack of Protect on the set makes it even more important to have proper speed control. Try to bring out Tyranitar with your preferred speed control already active so it does not have to maneuver around opposing super effective moves before attacking. Also, try to have strong partners on the field so when a Pokemon tries to hit Tyranitar with one of its multiple weaknesses, it is threatened by Tyranitar switching out and the partner going for a super effective move in return. Use Tyranitar's Sand Stream to deny opposing weather sweepers' Speed boosts. Tyranitar also can take advantage of opposing Trick Room teams, against which Tyranitar does not need team support to go first and wreak havoc. Team Options Speed control like Tailwind from Zapdos or Mega Salamence helps Tyranitar attack first with Rock Slide without getting pinned by super effective moves or double targets. Pokemon such as Hoopa-U and Porygon2 can reliably set up Trick Room, but be aware that they share weaknesses with Tyranitar. Fairy-types such as Tapu Koko, Tapu Lele, and Tapu Fini can handle Fighting-types such as Terrakion and Scrafty for Tyranitar. Intimidate support rounds out Tyranitar's terrific bulk, and the common users of Intimidate such as Landorus-T and Salamence also handle Fighting-types for it. Water-types such as Tapu Fini and Milotic prevent Intimidate users such as Landorus-T from easily switching in. Electric-types such as Tapu Koko and Zapdos and Grass-types such as Amoonguss and Tapu Bulu can threaten opposing Water-types such as Tapu Fini and Milotic. Finally, Fire-types such as Heatran and Volcanion can threaten opposing Steel-types such as Celesteela and Mega Metagross.

Rock Slide is a reliable spread move to clean up against weakened teams, while Crunch provides a single-target option for more focused damage. Dragon Dance increases Mega Tyranitar's offenses and allows it to outspeed base 130 Pokemon like Tapu Koko after one boost. Protect keeps Mega Tyranitar safe while its partners deal with any possible threats. Set Details Mega Tyranitar needs to run 252 Speed EVs and a Jolly nature to outpace base 130 Pokemon like Tapu Koko after a Dragon Dance boost. The remaining EVs go into Attack to maximize Mega Tyranitar's offensive pressure. This is the optimal spread, as there aren't any relevant defensive benchmarks worth striving for. Sand Stream as a pre-Mega ability gives Mega Tyranitar two chances to set sand. Usage Tips Tyranitar is a decent lead, as it can activate Sand Stream to break Focus Sashes and Mega Evolve to increase its bulk to switch in more easily later in the game. When faced against an opposing weather team, it sometimes makes more sense to hold off on Mega Evolving until after an opposing weather setter is predicted to switch in. Early-game, Mega Tyranitar's best use is to soften up foes with unboosted attacks and passive sand damage. It generally isn't a good idea to attempt a Dragon Dance before any foes that can force Mega Tyranitar out have been dealt with. Situationally, it may be appropriate to go for an early-game Dragon Dance to apply pressure to an opponent making passive plays, but ideally Dragon Dance should be reserved as Mega Tyranitar's late-game win condition so it can break down weakened teams after its checks have been cleared out. When attempting to set up Dragon Dance, it's generally a good idea to have either a redirection supporter like Amoonguss or a Fairy-type like Tapu Lele or Tapu Fini on the field to redirect or force out Fighting-type attackers. Mega Tyranitar makes a decent pivot into neutral and resisted attacks thanks to its high bulk, but this should be done sparingly, as it wants to conserve its HP until it can clean up late-game. Team Options Redirection support is nearly mandatory on Mega Tyranitar teams. Pokemon like Amoonguss are able to divert otherwise fatal Fighting-type attacks like Marshadow's Close Combat away from Mega Tyranitar while also freeing up a window of opportunity for Mega Tyranitar to set up Dragon Dance without being Taunted or incurring targeted damage. Pokemon that can deal with Landorus-T are greatly appreciated, as Landorus-T throws off Mega Tyranitar's offensive momentum with Intimidate and forces it out with Earthquake and Superpower. Tapu Fini, Kyurem-B, and Genesect are all decent options for checking Landorus-T. Choice Scarf Tapu Lele is the optimal Island Guardian to pair with Mega Tyranitar, as it can outspeed and OHKO Marshadow, provided Psychic Terrain is activated to block Shadow Sneak. Psychic Terrain is also useful for blocking Mega Scizor's Bullet Punch, which otherwise inflicts severe damage to Mega Tyranitar. Tapu Fini is also a great partner that can help force out Marshadow, threaten out Landorus-T, and offer Heal Pulse support to Mega Tyranitar. Although a more niche option, Tapu Bulu is an option that helps check Water-types like Tapu Fini and Mega Swampert, which Tyranitar otherwise struggles with. Mega Tyranitar also appreciates Grassy Terrain's ability to provide passive recovery and protection against Earthquake. Tailwind setters like Zapdos are able to give Mega Tyranitar enough of a Speed boost to beat down faster foes without the need for a Dragon Dance. Fire-types like Volcanion and Heatran are useful to help fend off offensive Steel-types like Mega Scizor and Mega Metagross, which otherwise tank hits from Mega Tyranitar and threaten to hit back with strong Steel-type attacks. Choice Scarf attackers like Landorus-T, Tapu Lele, and Genesect are useful for outspeeding Deoxys-A, which is guaranteed to faint after one attack plus sand damage but otherwise threatens to KO Mega Tyranitar with Superpower.

Moves Pursuit allows Tyranitar to trap threats it checks, most notably Mega Rayquaza and Mega Gengar. Foul Play is a strong STAB move due to the high Attack stats of most of Tyranitar's targets, including Mega Rayquaza, Extreme Killer Arceus, and Ultra Necrozma. Rest allows Tyranitar to restore HP and status ailments, enabling it to check Pokemon more than once and shrug off status from Pokemon like Mega Gengar. However, it leaves Tyranitar vulnerable to threats it's supposed to check; most notably, Mega Rayquaza can completely bypass Tyranitar when it's asleep with two Earthquakes and proceed to sweep. It also lets any Pokemon, especially wallbreakers, in for free. Rock Tomb enables Tyranitar to effectively check Ho-Oh and Yveltal, and the Speed reduction it offers allows Tyranitar's teammates to easily revenge kill the foe should Tyranitar be sacrificed. Stealth Rock is a decent option if Tyranitar's team is lacking a setter, and it can set the entry hazard up effectively thanks to its good bulk. However, Tyranitar's inability to threaten most Defoggers makes it less preferable. Toxic is an alternative option in the fourth slot that punishes many of the Pokemon Tyranitar can't do much against, such as support Arceus formes, Primal Groudon, Primal Kyogre, and Arceus-Ground and still punishes Ho-Oh. Set Details Maximum HP and Defense investment with a Shuca Berry and an Impish nature allows Tyranitar to be an effective check to Dragon Dance Mega Rayquaza as well as Swords Dance Ultra Necrozma, Extreme Killer Arceus, and Ho-Oh. Shuca Berry is important to survive +1 Life Orb Mega Rayquaza's Earthquake to OHKO it with Foul Play, as well as to take Swords Dance Ultra Necrozma's and Arceus's Earthquake. Sand Stream gives Tyranitar a boost to its Special Defense, allowing it to take almost nothing from Mega Gengar and Yveltal's attacks, and does minor chip damage to most foes. Pursuit can be used to deal over half to a -1 Defense Mega Rayquaza as it switches out, though it won't do much damage if it stays in, and Foul Play can OHKO -1 Mega Rayquaza after one round of Life Orb damage. Picking which to use depends on whether they have a solid switch-in to Tyranitar's Foul Play and if they can't risk losing Mega Rayquaza to Foul Play, in which case Pursuit is the better play. If the opposing Mega Rayquaza uses Dragon Dance as Tyranitar switches in, Foul Play is generally better because Tyranitar can still check Mega Rayquaza later, and the latter may take Stealth Rock damage upon switching in again. Tyranitar can also switch into and Pursuit trap both Swords Dance and Calm Mind Ultra Necrozma thanks to its Psychic immunity, provided it has already transformed, though Tyranitar should be wary of super effective coverage moves or Outrage from the Swords Dance set. Tyranitar should also freely switch into Yveltal and Ho-Oh to set up Stealth Rock or hit them with a Rock-type move. Use Rest when Tyranitar is low on health or statused, though be careful of leaving Tyranitar as setup bait due to the two turns Tyranitar is vulnerable. Team Options Tyranitar can fit on bulky offense, balance, and stall teams as a Pursuit trapper for Mega Gengar and solid check to Mega Rayquaza. Teammates such as Choice Band Mega Rayquaza, Arceus-Fairy, and Chansey appreciate Tyranitar Pursuit trapping Mega Gengar, depending on the team archetype Tyranitar is on. Teammates on stall such as Arceus-Water, Lugia, Mega Sableye, and Chansey can cover Tyranitar's weaknesses to threats such as Calm Mind Arceus-Steel, Primal Groudon, and Primal Kyogre. Ho-Oh forms a good defensive core with Tyranitar on balance teams, covering both special and physical attackers such as Calm Mind Arceus formes, Xerneas, Yveltal, Necrozma-DM, and Primal Groudon. Ferrothorn can set Spikes for balance teams and can switch into Primal Kyogre, which Tyranitar often lets in freely. Arceus-Grass can also check Primal Kyogre as well as Arceus-Ground and appreciates Tyranitar switching into Ho-Oh, Yveltal, and Mega Rayquaza. A secondary Mega Rayquaza check such as Arceus-Fairy or Lugia can cover sets Tyranitar falls victim to, most notably mixed Life Orb Mega Rayquaza. Lastly, offensive teammates such as Yveltal, Primal Groudon, and Primal Kyogre appreciate a switch-in to Mega Rayquaza and can defeat Pokemon Tyranitar struggles with.

Set Info This set simply sets up Sand Stream and Stealth Rock so that Excadrill (or whichever Sand Rush user you've chosen) can sweep. Ice Beam with 172 SpA is used to OHKO offensive Mega Salamence, with the rest of the EVs put into physical bulk. This can be important for keeping boosting Primal Groudon and Geomancy Xerneas at bay if Tyranitar is no longer needed to win. Low Kick nails important Pokemon such as Darkrai, Dialga, Arceus, and Arceus-Dark, but it is usually hard to fit on Tyranitar's set if these threats are already covered. Set Details The spread of 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD maximizes Tyranitar's ability to take special attacks from Yveltal, Latios, Latias, and Mewtwo. If Tyranitar is holding Leftovers, a spread of 248 HP / 92 Def / 168 SpD should be used to take Earthquake from +1 Adamant Mega Salamence and phaze or paralyze it. Shuca Berry allows Tyranitar to take any one unboosted Ground-type move in the game along with some boosted non-STAB Ground-type coverage moves. Leftovers promotes Tyranitar's longevity, and it is Tyranitar's only method of recovery. Lum Berry can be used to protect Tyranitar from a burn or sleep, particularly from Ho-Oh's Sacred Fire and Darkrai's Dark Void, respectively, though the item is not necessary if your team has a cleric or sleep absorber. Usage Tips Tyranitar struggles against Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre, so you must judge just how threatening one or the other is in the current situation before deciding to stay in with Tyranitar. Never use Thunder Wave if Excadrill, Arceus-Ground, Groudon, and Primal Groudon are still potential switch-ins to Tyranitar; otherwise, you will lose all momentum while giving a free switch to some of the most threatening Pokemon in the game. You must decide how you want to spend Tyranitar's HP when debating switching into Latias or Latios. Both of them hurt Tyranitar pretty significantly if it switches into Draco Meteor, which could mean a much easier win for your opponent should they have a Ho-Oh partnered with Latios or Latias. Tyranitar will either set up Stealth Rock or use Pursuit, but hardly ever both in one game due to its lack of recovery. Choose wisely which one will be most beneficial. Though Tyranitar can take Flying-type attacks well, it must be careful of coverage moves that Flying-types carry, such as Earthquake on Mega Salamence, Rayquaza, and Ho-Oh. Tyranitar's typing and ability make it really annoying for physical setup sweepers that aren't immune to sandstorm damage. Use this to your advantage, but make sure not to spend Tyranitar's HP recklessly doing this when it is needed for a Pokemon like Ho-Oh. Make sure to use entry hazard control wisely, as Tyranitar hates the residual damage caused by all forms of entry hazards, particularly Spikes and Toxic Spikes. Team Options Sand Rush Excadrill appreciates Tyranitar's sand support doubling its Speed, making it a fearsome revenge killer and sweeper. Primal Kyogre and Groudon appreciate the removal of Latios and Latias. Calm Mind Arceus formes appreciate Tyranitar's ability to scare out Ho-Oh, and Arceus-Ghost in particular adores how easily Tyranitar comes in on Life Orb Yveltal. A cleric such as Clefable can remove status ailments inflicted on Tyranitar. Latios and Latias take on Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre well while also clearing entry hazards for Tyranitar. Blissey takes on Fairy-types while also providing cleric support, and Alomomola checks Primal Groudon. Both of them pass humongous Wishes to Tyranitar to help with its recovery issue. Arceus-Water is a fantastic partner due to its ability to switch into Primal Groudon and be a secondary check to Mega Salamence. It also clears entry hazards so Tyranitar can switch more freely.

Moves Stone Edge is the main STAB move, with 100 Base Power backed by Tyranitar's base 130 Attack allowing it to do heavy amounts of damage to anything that doesn't resist it. It becomes very potent due to the lack of Pokemon that resist Rock in the Ubers metagame; switch-ins tend to be limited to Steel-types like Klefki. Notably, Stone Edge is able to OHKO Rayquaza, Mega Salamence, and most variants of Yveltal and 2HKO Extreme Killer Arceus and Xerneas. Crunch is Tyranitar's secondary STAB move and is mainly for targeting Steel-types that resist Stone Edge, such as Bronzong, Jirachi, and Dialga. It also targets Ghost-type Pokemon like Giratina-O, Arceus-Ghost, and Mega Gengar and is a more reliable option against neutral targets to avoid missing or wasting valuable Stone Edge PP. Pursuit's main function is to trap foes that are likely to switch out from Tyranitar; notable targets are Giratina-O, Latios, Latias, and in some scenarios Choice Band Ho-Oh not locked into Earthquake. However, one should consider the potential momentum drain when locking Tyranitar into Pursuit, as it can turn into setup fodder. Earthquake provides coverage for targets that resist both of Tyranitar's STAB attacks, such as Klefki and Lucario, and avoids Ferrothorn's Iron Barbs, though it is considerably weaker than Crunch. Earthquake also makes dealing with Aegislash easier due to avoiding the Attack drop from King's Shield, and it can score a 2HKO on Primal Groudon. Foul Play is an interesting option to consider on Tyranitar, as it is a common target for Arceus formes trying to set up Swords Dance such as Ground and Extreme Killer Arceus; however, the listed moves are somewhat irreplaceable on Tyranitar, as it would have to forgo Earthquake's coverage or the ability to Pursuit trap targets. Set Details A Jolly nature with maximum Speed investment is used so Tyranitar can outspeed as many slower targets as possible, increasing its potency as a wallbreaker. With a Jolly nature, Tyranitar is able to outspeed up to uninvested Yveltal and Xerneas, along with base 90 Speed Pokemon with little or no investment, reaching important benchmarks of outspeeding standard Giratina-O and Rock Polish, offensive, or support variants of Primal Groudon. Maximum Attack investment coupled with a Choice Band maximizes Tyranitar's damage output. Alternatively, an Adamant nature with maximum HP investment can be used to further increase damage output and also allow Tyranitar to survive two Draco Meteors from Latios and avoids a 2HKO from Mega Salamence's Double-Edge after Stealth Rock; however, Tyranitar then misses out on the aforementioned Speed benchmarks. Usage Tips Tyranitar can't really switch into much in the current metagame and can't utilize aggressively play very effectively, though in some exceptional cases it may be required, such as double switching Tyranitar in on a Giratina-O switch-in to prevent a Defog and either Pursuit trap to help remove Giratina-O or get in a free Crunch. Usually it is safer for Tyranitar to be brought in after a teammate has fainted, especially when Pursuit trapping key threats such as Latios, as 0 HP Tyranitar is 2HKOed by Draco Meteor and risks being beaten by Grass Knot. Powerful resisted attacks such as Double-Edge from Mega Salamence can 2HKO Tyranitar after Stealth Rock damage, but if Tyranitar gets in safely, it is able to comfortably take Mega Salamence on one-on-one, even after an Intimidate drop, as Choice Band-boosted Stone Edge is able to OHKO Mega Salamence after Stealth Rock and sandstorm damage. You can also try bringing Tyranitar into Ghost- or Dark-type attacks such as Hex and Dark Pulse from the likes of Giratina-O and Darkrai while keeping it considerably healthy to get in as many attacks as possible. Due to this Tyranitar set opting for a Choice Band in favor of a Chople Berry, it isn't able to check common Psychic- or Ghost-types that carry Fighting-type coverage attacks, like Mewtwo and Mega Gengar, and one may have to scout in some scenarios for these coverage moves to ensure Tyranitar is able to deal with these threats. Even with a Jolly nature, Tyranitar is still considerably slow and is only really capable of outspeeding Pokemon that don't invest much into Speed or no Speed at all. Avoid locking Tyranitar into Pursuit or Earthquake where possible and use them only when necessary, as this could cause a momentum drain and make it setup bait for many sweepers such as Extreme Killer Arceus and Geomancy Xerneas. Lugia can only really be dealt with effectively if Tyranitar manages to get a Defense drop with Crunch, meaning Lugia can stall it out with Toxic and Roost most of the time due to Multiscale. Therefore, it is important that Lugia be crippled with some status such as poison or paralysis before sending in Tyranitar to fully combat it.

Moves Dragon Dance bolsters Mega Tyranitar's Attack and Speed, allowing it to overpower its competition while outrunning up to Mewtwo at +1. Stone Edge is its best STAB move against most of the Uber tier to hit threats such as Ho-Oh, Yveltal, and Mega Salamence. After Mega Tyranitar sets up a single Dragon Dance, the majority of Pokemon that take neutral damage from Stone Edge suffer either an OHKO or a 2HKO. Earthquake complements Stone Edge by nailing threats such as Primal Groudon, Dialga, Mega Diancie, Arceus-Rock, and other Tyranitar while offering an accurate option to take out weakened threats that aren't immune to it. Crunch is primarily meant to tear through offensive teams while offering a powerful yet accurate move to fall back on; it notably hits the majority of Psychic- and Ghost-types for super effective damage while being the best neutral attack versus Ferrothorn, Arceus-Ground, and Mega Mewtwo X. Taunt is an optional move to use over Crunch to overcome defensive teams, severely crippling Pokemon such as Lugia, support Arceus, and Skarmory and thus allowing Mega Tyranitar to set up Dragon Dance safely. Low Kick is an optional move primarily for Ferrothorn and Arceus; however, it can also be an effective method to bypass Shuca Berry Dialga and Tyranitar while still 2HKOing Arceus-Ground and the rare Arceus-Fighting at +1. Iron Tail is the last move to consider if only to hit the majority of Fairy-types such as Xerneas and Clefable. Set Details A Jolly nature with maximum Speed investment is necessary to outrun Mewtwo, Darkrai, and Shaymin-S at +1. After Mega Evolution, this leaves Mega Tyranitar at 265 Speed unboosted, which is enough to outrun most base 90s, Xerneas, and Yveltal. When Tyranitar Mega Evolves, remember that it is still at 243 Speed—just slow enough to be outrun by standard Xerneas, which can, after Stealth Rock, OHKO Mega Tyranitar with STAB Moonblast or Focus Blast. Mega Tyranitar's goal is to pick apart defensive cores that can otherwise hinder other offensive sweepers. Most defensive Pokemon such as Lugia, Giratina-O, and Yveltal will lose to Mega Tyranitar. Thanks to sand and Mega Evolution increasing Tyranitar's bulk, Mega Tyranitar can easily set up on threats such as Darkrai, Yveltal, Latios, Latias, and Arceus-Dark. Mega Tyranitar can even be used to check potential threats such as Mega Salamence and Arceus-Ghost; Mega Salamence fails to OHKO Mega Tyranitar with +1 Earthquake, while Mega Tyranitar scares Mega Salamence with STAB Stone Edge, and unboosted Arceus-Ghost will fail to OHKO Mega Tyranitar in the sand with Brick Break or Focus Blast and will be taken down by a +1 Crunch. Aside from hindering Shuca Berry Dialga and Tyranitar, Unnerve is generally useless for an ability—the added benefit of normal Tyranitar having sand to bolster its Special Defense is too good to pass up. Primal Groudon is the number-one Pokemon that can be seen as a stop to Mega Tyranitar. Support Groudon can OHKO Mega Tyranitar at least 37% of the time with Precipice Blades, while +1 Earthquake will 2HKO most Primal Groudon. A more risky approach is to invest 84 EVs into Defense. Provided Stealth Rock is not in play and Primal Groudon does not pack many Attack EVs, Mega Tyranitar can then survive Precipice Blades 100% of the time. This comes at a cost of some power and missing on 2HKOs on Pokemon such as Arceus-Water. Usage Tips The biggest perk to using Dragon Dance Mega Tyranitar in Ubers is its resistance to the majority of priority in the tier. The only priority Mega Tyranitar has to worry about is STAB Bullet Punch from Mega Lucario and Mega Scizor, and Mega Tyranitar can easily stomach one Bullet Punch from either of these Pokemon. When Tyranitar switches in, it is recommended to Mega Evolve right away. The best options are Dragon Dance to put fear into the opponent's switch-in and STAB Stone Edge on potential switch-ins that can threaten Mega Tyranitar's sweep such as full-health Primal Groudon, Sableye that have yet to Mega Evolve, and Primal Kyogre. Taunt can sometimes be a safe option on potential switch-ins, as it can prevent status moves that could cripple Mega Tyranitar or moves that hinder Mega Tyranitar's sweep such as Roost and Whirlwind. After obtaining a Dragon Dance, Mega Tyranitar should use whatever move is necessary to beat its current foe. Remember that running Taunt or Crunch will slightly adjust Mega Tyranitar's playstyle and what Mega Tyranitar can set up on. Under certain circumstances, Mega Tyranitar can lead against Deoxys-S to limit Deoxys-S stacking entry hazards onto the field. Team Options Like most Pokemon on hyper offensive teams, Stealth Rock support is a must for Mega Tyranitar to guarantee 2HKOs on most Primal Groudon and Arceus-Water while OHKOing Lugia with +1 Stone Edge. Primal Groudon can be used for this role because it can also use Swords Dance to get through potential problems such as Mega Sableye and will shut down Klefki and Primal Kyogre. Offensive Primal Groudon is a great partner, as it enjoys having Giratina-O and Lugia off the field. For other Stealth Rock users, Dialga is a fine alternative in situations that Primal Groudon wants to go for a more offensive route for its ability to pressure Mega Sableye with STAB Flash Cannon while also checking Primal Kyogre. Excadrill will not get as much fun in the sand with this particular Tyranitar; however, it can still be a great partner in instances where Xerneas can get out of control and Mega Tyranitar may need to be sacrificed. Excadrill can also help keep Stealth Rock off the field as well as denting some of the problematic Pokemon such as Primal Groudon, Shuca Berry Dialga, and Shuca Berry Tyranitar with STAB Earthquake while holding an Air Balloon. One of the best offensive partners is Xerneas, as Xerneas and Mega Tyranitar will likely overpower most stall teams while having a guaranteed win against Darkrai. Aromatherapy just adds to Xerneas's great relationship with Mega Tyranitar, as it can clear nasty status effects that Mega Tyranitar might have taken in the heat of battle while switching into attacks such as Ho-Oh's Sacred Fire. Ho-Oh can be a great teammate, as it scorches Ferrothorn and Arceus-Fairy while checking Xerneas. Primal Kyogre is an interesting partner for Mega Tyranitar, as it can beat Primal Groudon and Mega Sableye in exchange for Mega Tyranitar eliminating Latios and Latias. Finally, Giratina-O makes for a good teammate because it can hamper Swords Dance Arceus-Ground and other potential threats such as Mega Blaziken. Team Options Primal Groudon is the most consistent option as a Stealth Rock setter, with support and Jolly Swords Dance sets being the most potent choices. Primal Groudon also provides a check to Xerneas and a switch-in to Kyogre and Klefki that are likely to come in on Tyranitar. In return, it appreciates Tyranitar dealing with common threats such as Yveltal, Latios, Rayquaza, and Giratina-O. One should take the shared Ground weakness into account, though, making solid Ground-immune Pokemon a great choice to consider on the team. Giratina-O is able to check offensive variants of Primal Groudon and Arceus-Ground while also helping out with Extreme Killer Arceus formes, providing the ability to cripple these targets with status moves like Toxic and Will-O-Wisp. Mega Salamence can be considered on more offensively oriented builds, as it is a solid setup sweeper with good offensive synergy, is a decent answer to Primal Groudon due to having Intimidate pre-Mega Evolution, and can be a answer to Swords Dance Arceus variants. In return, Tyranitar deals with common Mega Salamence answers such as defensive Yveltal and Lugia. Calm Mind Arceus-Ground can be a interesting set to consider to help out against Primal Groudon and potentially sweep unprepared teams, due to Tyranitar's ability to remove the deterrence Ho-Oh causes to Calm Mind Arceus-Ground; because this option opens up a weakness to Primal Kyogre, one may opt for another Primal Kyogre switch-in along with Primal Groudon such as Ferrothorn. Ferrothorn is also able to relieve Groudon of its Stealth Rock duties and provide another Xerneas answer. Other Steel-types such as Klefki and Bronzong also provide good defensive synergy, being able to deal with common threats to Tyranitar such as Xerneas, Deoxys-A, and Mewtwo. Arceus-Water can also fulfill the role of a defensive check to Primal Groudon, crippling it with Toxic, and of a Primal Kyogre pivot. It further can provide Defog support, help against Mega Diancie matchups, and most importantly deal with Ho-Oh, as Sacred Fire burns are a deterrent to Tyranitar. Mega Gengar has good offensive synergy with Tyranitar and can trap and remove common switch-ins to Tyranitar like support Arceus formes. A Hypnosis + Hex set is the most potent option for Mega Gengar, though Destiny Bond sets can force a trade against key threats such as offensive Arceus variants and Ho-Oh and remove Fairy-types like Xerneas and Arceus-Fairy with Sludge Wave. Xerneas variants such as Choice Scarf and Geomancy are good offensive choices for teams; Xerneas appreciates Tyranitar's ability to soften down Primal Groudon, as it is a common switch-in to Tyranitar, enabling Geomancy Xerneas to be a solid wincon. Choice Scarf Xerneas is able to effectively absorb sleep from Darkrai and is also an effective revenge killer. Primal Kyogre with Calm Mind is an effective wallbreaker against stall teams, helps to wear down Primal Groudon alongside Tyranitar, and helps against special variants of Arceus-Ground. Tyranitar can Pursuit trap common Kyogre answers such as Latios and Latias to remove them from the game in return. Excadrill benefits from Tyranitar's Sand Stream ability and can be an effective sweeper or cleaner, especially against offensive teams, due to Sand Rush letting it outspeed notable boosted threats such as Geomancy Xerneas.

Moves Rock Slide OHKOes Mega Charizard Y and Talonflame even with a Timid nature. Stone Edge is a more powerful option which OHKOes Mega Charizard Y and Talonflame even when Tyranitar is burned; it also bypasses Wide Guard, ensuring that Tyranitar will get the necessary OHKOs. Both of these Rock-type moves threaten Fire-types in general. Dark Pulse is Tyranitar's secondary STAB move, hitting Ghost-types for super effective damage. Fire Blast hits Steel-types for super effective damage, which would otherwise be able to completely wall this set. Ice Beam OHKOes Dragon-types such as Garchomp and Salamence. Set Details Tyranitar should run max Special Attack and Speed investment to ensure that it hits as hard and fast as possible. With Choice Scarf and a Timid nature, Tyranitar will outspeed max Speed base 115s. Alternatively, running 228 Speed EVs or a Modest nature ensures that Tyranitar is slower than Modest Choice Scarf Politoed, allowing Tyranitar to set up sand after Politoed sets up rain. With 228 Speed EVs and a Timid nature, Tyranitar won't outspeed base 115's Speed, but it will still outspeed Mega Lucario. With a Modest nature, Tyranitar will outspeed Pokemon with base 100 Speed but will only Speed tie with Garchomp. Usage Tips Choice Scarf Tyranitar plays well as a lead to pick up a surprise KO at the start of a game, often ending up acting as a hit-and-run Pokemon. It plays well late-game, as it can easily pick off weakened Pokemon with its strong coverage moves. Team Options Choice Scarf Tyranitar requires more offensive support than other sets due to its lack of Protect. Talonflame can easily pick off Fighting- and Steel-types with Brave Bird and Flare Blitz, respectively; because Tyranitar can perform the latter role with Fire Blast, having Talonflame support means that Tyranitar can choose to be locked into a different move. Rotom-W can spread burns with Will-O-Wisp and generally threaten Water-types with Thunderbolt. Rotom-H and Ludicolo help Tyranitar beat opposing sun and rain setters, respectively. Aegislash and other Ghost-types are immune to Fighting-type moves and generally enjoy Tyranitar's coverage.

Moves Few Pokemon resist Tyranitar's STAB combination of Crunch and Rock Slide. Dragon Dance is the main reason to run physical Tyranitar, as it boosts both Tyranitar's Attack and Speed and solves two of Tyranitar's problems: its relatively low Speed and Intimidate's Attack drop. Protect is crucial to this set, as with Dragon Dance boosts, Tyranitar is likely to be double targeted to prevent it from sweeping; Protect blocks these attacks and allows Tyranitar's ally to remove the threat. Set Details Mega Tyranitar can use a bulkier spread of 180 HP / 12 Atk / 132 Def / 4 SpD / 180 Spe with a Jolly nature, which is never 2HKOed by Garchomp's Earthquake after Mega Evolving or OHKOed by bulky Mega Mawile's Play Rough. After going for Dragon Dance once, Tyranitar will be able to outspeed opposing Choice Scarf Tyranitar, as well as 2HKO Garchomp with Crunch. Tyranitar has the rare combination of enough weaknesses with good enough bulk to make use of Weakness Policy, which boosts Tyranitar's Attack two stages when hit by a super effective move. Usage Tips Tyranitar can be played as a lead with either Amoonguss or Meowstic, as they can both aid Tyranitar with setting up. By leading with both Tyranitar and Amoonguss or Meowstic, there is a decreased risk of switching them in later in the battle. Tyranitar can also be kept in the back until the Pokemon which threaten it have been KOed, allowing it to sweep late-game. Team Options Amoonguss has access to Rage Powder, which redirects moves away from Tyranitar. This allows Tyranitar to set up without worrying about Will-O-Wisp from the common Rotom formes or super effective moves from Pokemon such as Gardevoir. Meowstic and Klefki can both set up Reflect, Light Screen, and Safeguard with Prankster, allowing Tyranitar to set up without worrying about status moves or taking a large amount of damage. Talonflame can OHKO most Fighting-types, Scrafty being the rare exception, spread Will-O-Wisp to shut down physical attackers, and use Taunt to prevent status moves from affecting Tyranitar. Aegislash is immune to Fighting-type moves and can block spread moves such as Earthquake and Dazzling Gleam with Wide Guard, aiding Tyranitar in setting up.
