Setup sweepers such as Koraidon, Miraidon, Kingambit, Iron Moth, and Espathra appreciate Orthworm's Shed Tail preventing status while giving them some leeway to boost. Koraidon in particular also appreciates Orthworm walling Great Tusk without Fighting-type moves and deterring Great Tusk from using Ground-type moves. Swords Dance Chien-Pao and Calm Mind Flutter Mane similarly appreciate Orthworm's Shed Tail easing setup by compensating for their lower bulk.

Stealth Rock: IronPress sets have a more difficult time fitting it in, but Orthworm can run Stealth Rock if the team can't run it elsewhere. Items Sitrus Berry: Sitrus Berry helps ensure that Orthworm can still Shed Tail after taking a big hit or, if able to stay healthy, gives it two uses of Shed Tail. Rocky Helmet: Not only does Rocky Helmet make it even easier to wear down physical attackers, but it makes running Body Press as the only attack much more feasible. Leftovers: Leftovers is a consistent option, especially in conjunction with Substitute. EV spreads 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe with Impish: Maximum physical bulk is ideal if relying on Orthworm to beat Dragonite and Baxcalibur in the late-game. A fully invested Body Press will also OHKO offensive Chi-Yu. 252 HP / 252 SpD / 4 Spe with Careful: This EV spread makes Orthworm much less likely to be 2HKOd by unboosted Flutter Mane and Life Orb Dragapult. 252 HP / 116 Def / 140 Spe with Impish: This spread can be used to outspeed Adamant Kingambit, most Corviknight, and Skeledirge. This can be very useful if using Shed Tail.

Tera Types Tera Dependency - Low: This Orthworm isn't usually meant to Terastallize, since that's better served by the teammates its passing a Substitute to.
