Agility Porygon trades immediate offense for sweeping prowess. Porygon's bulk allows it to set up against weaker foes like Mareanie. Eviolite + Recover strengthens this ability, though offensive support is mandatory to cover for the reduced coverage. Ice Beam hits Ferroseed and most of the tier for strong neutral damage while hammering bulky foes like Mudbray and Onix. Psychic cleans through Mienfoo and weakened Poison-types. Berry Juice frees Recover's moveslot for another coverage move, like Thunderbolt, which stops healthy Pawniard and Frillish from preventing a sweep. However, it makes Porygon more vulnerable to Knock Off from Mareanie and strong priority from Grookey. Maximum Speed investment lets Porygon outspeed Choice Scarf Mienfoo and Vulpix after Agility. On Berry Juice you run 76 Special Defense to live a hit from Life Orb Abra after Stealth Rock. This set pairs well with special attackers like Abra, Galarian Ponyta, and Staryu, which pressure Pawniard and Ferroseed, and it often relies on them wearing down its checks early- and mid-game. Knock Off users like Mienfoo, Pawniard, and Mareanie can remove Eviolite and bring important targets like Mienfoo and Poison-types into OHKO range. Pawniard, Ferroseed, and Frillish make sweeping difficult by taking Porygon's attacks well. Trapinch and Diglett can weaken or eliminate the Steel-types, while Grookey can make progress against Frillish teams. Diglett can also use Memento to guarantee a safe Agility for Porygon.

Trace and great natural bulk allow Porygon to serve as one of the tier's best walls. Teleport lets Porygon use its bulk to safely pivot in offensive threats. The choice of coverage move depends on what you prefer to check; Ice Beam hits a wider swath of the tier for neutral damage and hits Diglett and Trapinch super effectively, while Psychic threatens Poison-types. Thunder Wave shuts down would-be threats, almost none of which can OHKO Porygon, including opposing Porygon, Galarian Ponyta, and Abra. Trace lets Porygon shut down Flash Fire Ponyta, switch into Regenerator users like Mareanie and Foongus consistently, and counter-trap Diglett and Trapinch. The given defensive investment lets Porygon take hits from powerful threats like Life Orb Abra, Download Porygon, and Flame Body Ponyta. This set is a defensive jack-of-all-trades that can soft check many threats. Abra and Ponyta appreciate it counter-trapping Arena Trap users. Porygon is vulnerable to Fighting-types like Mienfoo and Timburr and thus partners well with Poison-types like Koffing and Mareanie. Pawniard and other Knock Off users can also limit Porygon's effectiveness, but they fear Thunder Wave and can be pivoted into by Mienfoo or trapped by Trapinch and Diglett.

Porygon is the tier's most effective Choice Scarf user because of its great damage output and coverage moves, which let it effectively clean up weakened teams. Tri Attack is Porygon's strongest choice, while Ice Beam is often most spammable, dealing a chunk of damage to Ferroseed and hitting other neutral targets hard with a Download boost. Both attacks carry a status chance, which sometimes lets Porygon bypass its checks. Thunderbolt is Porygon's best option to hit Pawniard and Frillish. Psychic threatens Mienfoo and Poison-types, OHKOing the former's standard set at +1. Trick is an alternative that trades Porygon's Speed to limit defensive checks like Ferroseed and Frillish in certain matchups. This set has tremendous synergy with other fast special attackers like Abra, Galarian Ponyta, and Staryu by pressuring their shared checks like Pawniard and, in Abra and Staryu's case, Ferroseed. Mienfoo is an effective partner because it can freely use Knock Off to weaken bulky foes into OHKO range and, with U-turn, can pivot on exploitable Poison-types it lures in like Koffing. Mienfoo also switches into and threatens defensive Porygon checks like Pawniard, Frillish, and the special sponges Ferroseed and Munchlax. Trapinch and Diglett can trap Steel-types and Munchlax, although foe Trapinch and Diglett deter and punish Porygon's Thunderbolt. Grookey can effectively punish Frillish.

Porygon with Choice Specs is nothing to scoff at. Its already-impressive Special Attack, combined with its superb bulk, allow it to easily deal with a variety of threats. Choice Scarf increases its mediocre Speed to the 21 threshold, allowing it to outpace all unboosted Pokemon in Little Cup. Trace enables it to switch into certain Pokemon's STAB moves for free, like those of Chinchou, Mantyke, and Houndour. From there, Porygon can either immediately threaten with any of its three attacks; Shadow Ball is usually a safe bet to hit the incoming Ghost and KO it easily. From there, Tri Attack and Shadow Ball will 2HKO anything that does not resist it, allowing Porygon to deal with virtually any threat. Porygon is also unique in that it can very easily cripple Wynaut by tricking it a Choice item and then switching out, as Trace allows it to copy Shadow Tag. Porygon does not need Speed when running Choice Specs, mainly due to its tremendous damage output and above-average bulk. It can easily revenge kill most Choice Scarf Pokemon, even ones that are at full health, as well as significantly dent most Pokemon that can't respond with Fighting-type moves. If running Choice Scarf, then it is required that one use a Timid nature and an EV spread of 76 HP / 236 SpA / 196 Spe. However, in this capacity Porygon serves as more of a revenge killer than a bulky attacker. Porygon can still utilize Trick to cripple incoming walls, however. Porygon's best bets for teammates are Ghost-types and Pokemon who resist Fighting-type moves. Drifloon enjoys the free switch into a Choiced Fighting-type attack which allows it to set up a free Substitute. Gligar does likewise, boosting its stats safely once its Substitute is up.

One of Porygon's most dangerous sets, Agility rectifies Porygon's only subpar stat: Speed. With a Modest nature and 196 Speed EVs, Porygon hits 13 Speed and 19 Special Attack, enough to outspeed most of the notable Scarfers in the metagame after an Agility boost. Mankey and Houndour cap at 25 and Machop caps at 21. The only Choice Scarf Pokemon that are faster than this are Gligar and Diglett, both of whom are typically used in other ways. Gastly can also outspeed with a Choice Scarf; though formerly its most common set, Scarf Gastly has become rare as of late, so it isn't a particularly noteworthy threat to this Porygon variant. Only Magnemite resists every move on this set, though it will not particularly enjoy getting hit repeatedly by any given move due to its poor Special Defense and abysmal HP stats. If Magnemite presents itself as a problem, Porygon can use Hidden Power Ground to deal with it more easily. Magby and Croagunk, both commonly-used revenge killers, are beaten easily by Hidden Power Ground as well. Hidden Power Ground also offers almost unresisted coverage (barring the Normal/Flying-types) when combined with Shadow Ball, while Tri Attack hits everything quite hard. Munchlax gives this set trouble as well, being the token special wall and able to hit back with a powerful Return. A powerful physical attacker complements this Porygon well. Fighting-types in particular are especially effective teammates thanks to their super effective STAB moves to hit Munchlax and Magnemite with. Machop, with its superb bulk, is able to come in and immediately force out or kill either aforementioned defensive threat. Mankey can also serve this role well, as Choice Scarf Mankey can either U-turn away from a possible switch-in or do massive damage with Close Combat.

Porygon is also among the most effective users of Trick Room. With its good stats and movepool, Porygon can begin attacking as soon as it has set up Trick Room, underspeeding all but the slowest Pokemon in the metagame. Porygon is able to support the team from an offensive standpoint effectively with its excellent type coverage, and if it opts for Recover, it can even set up Trick Room several times, a quality that nearly no other Trick Room user can boast. Trick Room is obviously the focus of the set, as otherwise Porygon is just a slow attacker. It also serves as an excellent support move, letting other slow teammates manage a sweep. Tri Attack again is the staple offensive move of the set, letting Porygon walk all over Pokemon with poor Special Defense. Thunderbolt allows Porygon to handle Water-types with ease, while Shadow Ball lets it beat Ghosts. Alternatively, the aforementioned Recover can be used to help Porygon set up Trick Room more than once. Trick Room Porygon does best with Trick Room-abusing teammates, such as Cubone or Krabby. They both benefit greatly from Trick Room and are able to easily remove from play Munchlax and Magnemite, two Pokemon that Porygon hates to face. Cubone's powerful STAB Earthquake coming off of a Thick Club-boosted Attack stat is nothing short of phenomenal, while Krabby's Crabhammer hits extremely hard as well.

This set is a variation on the above, mainly used when your team has enough Trick Room support. By running Return over Tri Attack, Porygon is able to 2HKO Munchlax without a Download boost. Porygon is then able to plow through other threats with the classic BoltBeam combination and its sky-high Special Attack stat. The equally-revered Fighting/Ghost combination is also usable, albeit with a good deal less Base Power in exchange for totally unresisted coverage. If another coverage attack does not appeal to you, you can use Trick Room so that Porygon can start its own party. This Porygon is stopped by very few Pokemon. Magnemite resists every move on the set barring Hidden Power Fighting or Hidden Power Ground, and without a Special Attack boost from Download, Porygon lacks the proper "oomph" to deal with it quickly, which is extremely detrimental to its sweep. Mixed Trick Room Porygon's best teammates are Pokemon that can set up Trick Room and deal with the pesky Magnemite. Unfortunately, such Pokemon are limited in number. Bronzor is good for setting up Trick Room and can carry Earthquake to deal with Magnemite, though it can get into big trouble if Magnemite uses Magnet Rise, as Bronzor will be unable to switch out, thus wasting precious turns of Trick Room. Slow Fighting-types such as Machop and Makuhita make mincemeat out of Magnemite and Munchlax; slow Ground-types such as Cubone and Trapinch work just as well.

Porygon's great bulk, reliable recovery, and special coverage make it a great wall in ADV ZU and set it apart from other special walls like Delcatty, Gloom, and Noctowl. Thunderbolt deals significant damage to Corsola, which otherwise switches in on Return and threatens to respectively wall and break through Porygon, and it's stronger against other Water-types like Wartortle, Horsea, and Staryu. Return is a stronger alternative to 2HKO Ponyta and Quilava, notably OHKOing Abra, and it doesn't leave Porygon reliant on Toxic to beat Chinchou. Ice Beam is strong against Gloom and Tropius and keeps Porygon threatening against physical attackers like Cubone and Rhyhorn. Toxic wears down offensive foes like Seaking, Ponyta, and Quilava while Porygon recovers, puts walls like opposing Porygon and Lileep on a timer, and forces Pokemon with ways to mitigate status like Corsola and Noctowl to switch out in Corsola's case or use Refresh and Rest respectively. Thunder Wave is an alternative to Toxic to neutralize fast attackers like Ponyta and Quilava, but it leaves Porygon more passive and unable to wear down opposing walls and Chinchou. Trace has interesting utility perks for Porygon, potentially allowing it to use Corsola's and Staryu's Natural Cure to heal off status and become immune to Flash Fire Ponyta's STAB moves. Porygon's sole Fighting weakness means special attackers like Ponyta, Quilava, and Abra struggle to break through it without support, so it's a great fit for bulky offense and balance teams. Physically defensive Pokemon like Corsola, Gloom, and Koffing are great partners for Porygon given their complementary bulk, making defensive cores that are tough to break, and all of them can absorb Toxic for Porygon and handle offensive Poison-types like Beedrill and Ariados. Tropius is another physically defensive Pokemon that particularly appreciates Porygon handling Ponyta and Quilava, and in return, it can handle Aipom and Meditite for Porygon. Mightyena helps neutralize physical attackers for Porygon with Intimidate and provides cleric support in case Porygon is afflicted by status. Setup sweepers like Beedrill, Anorith, and Abra benefit from Porygon wearing down foes with Toxic so that they can more comfortably sweep. Fast wallbreakers such as Aipom, Doduo, and Quilava benefit from Porygon handling faster special attackers like Abra, Ponyta, and Elekid for them. Porygon struggles to deal with Magnemite, so teammates like specially defensive Gloom, Ponyta, and Flaaffy should handle it for Porygon.

Set Description Curse Porygon may appear outclassed by other Curse Normal-types, mainly Wigglytuff and the rare Dunsparce, especially since they also have access to paralysis moves—Thunder Wave or Body Slam and Glare, respectively. Porygon often gets overshadowed by Wigglytuff, but it makes up for this in waves by having Recover, allowing it to find setup and switch-in opportunities far more easily; Recover only using one moveslot also means Porygon can fit both recovery and the valuable paralysis spreading of Thunder Wave, whereas Wigglytuff and Dunsparce solely miss Sleep Talk if using a paralysis move, as their best self-healing move is Rest—the exception being Body Slam Wigglytuff, which retains Sleep Talk but can't spread paralysis as reliably. Porygon also differentiates itself from these two by being able to actively switch into Sudowoodo and Graveler, boosting up with Curse and and using Recover to stay healthy, forcing them to use Self-Destruct or Explosion, respectively, to take Porygon out. The combination of Curse, Thunder Wave, and Recover is so notable because Thunder Wave means Porygon will outspeed foes despite lowering its own Speed with Curse, and any full paralysis will be a free turn where Porygon does not have to use Recover, letting it continue powering up with Curse or just launch a boosted Double-Edge. The recoil of Double-Edge is a negligible drawback compared to Return's lower power due to Recover, and Porygon needs as much power as it can get with such a low Attack stat. Curse also importantly makes Porygon a decent switch-in to Stantler if at full health, avoiding a 2HKO even with Spikes up and paralyzing Stantler with Thunder Wave, proceeding to boost up with Curse and beat Stantler. RestTalk Stantler cannot match Porygon's boosts and can just give Porygon ample setup opportunity while Curse + Light Screen Stantler hates being paralyzed. Team Options Solid teammates for Curse Porygon are Weezing, Xatu, and Fearow, which can all take on Primeape and Hitmonlee; Octillery shuts down Ninetales and Sudowoodo; Sudowoodo and especially Graveler help prevent Pineco, Wigglytuff, and Weezing from using Porygon to set up or launch attacks; Ninetales stops Weezing and Magnemite. Pokemon that enjoy Porygon's paralysis Xatu-checking capabilities, like Kingler and Primeape, make for good partners as well. Fearow, RestTalk Persian, Fire Blast Weezing, and Sunny Day Ninetales get a special mention as teammates, as they appreciate Porygon's ability to force Sudowoodo and Graveler to sacrifice themselves to beat it.

Set Description Thunder and Ice Beam are the best combination of special attacks to hit the highest number of common Pokemon for super effective damage, such as Xatu, Octillery, Dugtrio, Dewgong, Fearow, and Pupitar. Thunder Wave significantly reduces what can safely switch into and take advantage of Porygon, crippling targets like Magmar, Kingler, Flareon, Weezing, Stantler, and Primeape that lack RestTalk. Thunder Wave also is generally a great move to use into basically anything, as actually outspeeding foes allows Porygon to use its moves much more safely; the same speed control works great to support slow but powerful teammates, namely Kingler, Curse Stantler, Primeape, and Magmar, which appreciate threats like Xatu, Fearow, and Weezing being slowed down and potentially fully paralyzed. This particular Porygon set is a great threat to many Xatu + Dugtrio Spikes teams—one of the most common and dominant team structures in the tier—as the only Pokemon commonly used on them that can handle BoltBeam Porygon without being ruined by Thunder Wave is Wigglytuff, which is still not on a majority of them. Still, this potential to face Wigglytuff is the main reason why Thief is a good consideration; Wigglytuff's ability to take hits is significantly reduced without Leftovers, especially with Spikes on the field. Also, Porygon has good enough Special Attack and super effective coverage to gradually chip down threats that can answer a Porygon that lacks Thunder Wave, like Weezing, over the course of a game, which are also further being chipped by Spikes. However, Thief of course leaves Porygon without the all-round amazing utility of Thunder Wave, meaning it has to try and fish for paralysis with Thunder, a mere 21% chance factoring in accuracy; Thief can also only steal one item, and not having Leftovers when first attempting to switch in, especially with Spikes on the field, can make finding entry for Porygon more difficult. Team Options Weezing is the best partner for Porygon, appreciating Porygon's prowess in checking Xatu and Dugtrio while taking on Primeape and Hitmonlee itself, and it can use Explosion to eliminate a Wigglytuff or Ninetales that walls Porygon. Pineco is also a prime teammate for Porygon, as its Spikes wears down walls like Wigglytuff and Ninetales, which Porygon struggles with. Fearow and Xatu help to check Primeape, Hitmonlee, Gloom, and RestTalk Stantler while appreciating Porygon's ability to take on Dewgong and Graveler; Porygon can also steal the Leftovers from Wigglytuff or Sudowoodo, which helps Fearow and Xatu wallbreak. Rock-types like Sudowoodo and Graveler serve as effective answers to Pineco, Wigglytuff, and Weezing—bar if Weezing has Hidden Power Water—which can take advantage of Porygon, and Porygon can handle Dewgong and—if at high health—Octillery for them. Graveler also clears away Spikes with Rapid Spin, making entry for Porygon easier. Octillery itself is a great ally for Porygon, stopping Ninetales and Sudowoodo in their tracks, and Octillery and Porygon can help each other in checking Xatu, other Octillery, and Ground-types like Dugtrio and Graveler so that neither gets overwhelmed too quickly. Good wincons that take advantage of paralysis, such as Kingler, Curse + Light Screen Stantler, and Primeape, like having Thunder Wave Porygon around to facilitate setup and check Xatu. Thunder Wave also makes setup easier for Wigglytuff, as does Porygon checking Sudowoodo and Graveler for it, and Wigglytuff can answer Chinchou, unlike Porygon, which is afraid of Thunder paralysis. Ninetales also has great synergy with Porygon, as Porygon can switch into and threaten out Octillery, Dewgong, and Graveler, while Ninetales walls Weezing and is a great answer to Magnemite. Gloom also works well with Porygon, halting Primeape, Hitmonlee, Chinchou, and Octillery that lack Ice Beam, while Porygon can switch into Xatu and Dewgong for Gloom; the two also combine to form a potentially overwhelming, paralysis-spamming core, with Gloom having Stun Spore and Porygon having Thunder Wave.

Set Description Recover is one of the most important moves in RBY and the primary reason Porygon has a niche. The move is mandatory for Porygon to wall and stall Snorlax. Given Recover's 32 PP, Porygon can easily absorb all 24 Snorlax Body Slam hits and then some. Unless Snorlax is carrying Amnesia, it lacks any solid option to break through Porygon. Outside of a freeze from Ice Beam or multiple consecutive critical hits, Snorlax can only feasibly beat a healthy Porygon with Self-Destruct. Considering this is generally a poor trade for the Snorlax user, they will often be forced to switch it out. This gives the Porygon user the opportunity to double switch or attack to maintain some momentum. Porygon can prevent Snorlax from getting offensive momentum while keeping Pokemon that often answer Snorlax, like Chansey, Starmie, and one's own Snorlax, safe and available to fill other roles. Porygon is a rather frail Pokemon, so it should use Recover very liberally. It should avoid switching out until it is at or near full health, as it would otherwise risk falling to a heavier hit from Snorlax, like Hyper Beam or any critical hit. Thunder Wave is also essentially required. Paralysis is critical for mitigating Snorlax: full paralysis generates free turns for Porygon, enabling it to attack instead of simply using Recover on most every turn. Paralysis also makes other physical attackers much more manageable. While Tauros is very unlikely to stay in against a healthy Porygon, if it must do so in a desperate endgame, Porygon can rather safely win the one-on-one by using Thunder Wave, using Recover, and waiting for full paralyses to attack and eventually KO Tauros. Similarly, Thunder Wave is a good way to pressure Pokemon like Gengar and Exeggutor. Additionally, because Porygon pretty consistently forces Snorlax to switch, Porygon can potentially paralyze the Pokemon that commonly switch in like Chansey, Starmie, and Alakazam. However, doing this may prevent Porygon from reaching full health before it switches out, as Porygon will have to switch out in fear of paralysis. While Porygon may have dismal offensive stats, it has a large and diverse offensive movepool. Ice Beam is the most common attack on Porygon primarily due to its ability to freeze foes. While Porygon generally defeats Snorlax via a war of attrition regardless, it is more than happy to cut the war short with a freeze. Ice Beam allows Porygon to participate in freeze wars and keep higher value Pokemon, like Chansey and one’s own Snorlax, safe from bad luck. Ice Beam is also a reasonable coverage move with a potential 2HKO on Rhydon and likely 4HKOs on Exeggutor and Zapdos. Being able to chip or even potentially freeze switch-ins like Chansey, Starmie, and Alakazam is also significant. Porygon’s final move extends its coverage. Thunderbolt is the most common choice, as it complements Ice Beam famously well. It notably enables Porygon to bully or finish off Water-type Pokemon like Starmie, Slowbro, Cloyster, and Lapras, especially if they are paralyzed. It also has a fair amount of PP to improve Porygon's ability to stall. Tri Attack is a fairly strong option that can pressure Pokemon with more special bulk, like Chansey, Alakazam, and Jynx. Finally, Hyper Beam is an option that can catch switch-ins and paralyzed foes by surprise. It can reliably pick off Chansey below 45% health and Alakazam below 60%. The choice for Porygon’s second offensive move often comes down to its teammates and player preference. Porygon has a very straightforward gameplan. Generally, it needs to do two things to stay successful. First, Porygon should try to stay as healthy as possible. Porygon should aim to switch out with as much health as possible so it can consistently answer Pokemon like Snorlax. It should generally only attack when it is close to or at full health. Two important benchmarks to keep in mind are 76.5% and 84.6% HP; Porygon must be at or above these points to survive a Hyper Beam and a critical hit Body Slam, respectively, and thus feel comfortable attacking instead of healing. It is imperative that Porygon ends every turn above both of these benchmarks, especially before it is switched out. In general, Porygon should prioritize Recover and Thunder Wave over attacking. Second, Porygon should avoid paralysis. Paralysis is often a death sentence for Porygon, as it will become slower than Snorlax and very easy to exploit on turns when it is fully paralyzed. Unless it can KO them immediately, Porygon should generally switch out when faced with paralysis inducers like Chansey, Starmie, Alakazam, Slowbro, Jolteon, Zapdos, and Stun Spore Exeggutor. The bigger-picture purpose of using Porygon often comes down to getting more out of one’s Snorlax and Chansey, as neither should need to deal with the opponent’s Snorlax when Porygon can do so. Snorlax is more free to forgo Reflect and explore more offensive options thanks to Porygon’s assistance. Additionally, if Porygon loses a freeze war against Snorlax, one’s own Snorlax can engage in a freeze war with no fear. Chansey works similarly, as it can focus on checking special attackers and be more difficult to exploit.

Recover and Thunder Wave are both essential for walling Snorlax and threatening paralysis on switch-ins, so Porygon should never drop either of these moves. Ice Beam is Porygon's main attacking move, as it does decent damage, has a chance to freeze, and prevents Rhydon from using Porygon as free entry. Thunderbolt pairs well with Ice Beam as coverage, notably threatening Starmie and Cloyster with a 3HKO, and its 24 PP can be useful in PP stalling. Double-Edge can be used instead of Thunderbolt to threaten Chansey and Alakazam, but it only 3HKOes Alakazam and has a chance to 3HKO Chansey while dealing significant recoil to Porygon. When using Thunderbolt or Double-Edge against Chansey, Starmie, Alakazam, and Slowbro, Porygon should only attack on the switch or if the foe is in KO range, as these Pokemon have Thunder Wave. Porygon can use Blizzard over Ice Beam for high odds of 3HKOing Exeggutor and always 2HKOing Rhydon, but it only has 8 PP, so Porygon needs to play more conservatively than it would with Ice Beam. Psychic can force out Snorlax with repeated Special drops but gives completely free entry to the many Psychic-types that can paralyze Porygon. Thunder can be used as a stronger alternative to Thunderbolt that 2HKOes Cloyster and has a chance to 2HKO Starmie, but its poor accuracy makes this unrealistic. Lastly, Conversion can be used to copy a foe's typing, but this is only useful if Snorlax is already dealt with, as Porygon is extremely likely to take paralysis when using this move. The key to making this set work is paralyzing Snorlax, preferably before Porygon switches in so it doesn't have to risk a critical hit when using Thunder Wave. Once Snorlax is paralyzed, Porygon should use Recover every time Snorlax attacks and only attack when Snorlax is fully paralyzed. Porygon needs to remain unparalyzed to wall Snorlax effectively, so it should almost always switch out when facing Pokemon that can paralyze it. Once Snorlax is forced to use Rest, the Porygon user can bring in a strong special attacker to force Snorlax out. If the opposing Snorlax has Amnesia, Porygon should paralyze it and switch to a teammate that can handle it, such as Starmie, Slowbro, or one's own Amnesia Snorlax. Once the opposing Snorlax is revealed to have Amnesia, Porygon can be used as a weaker Chansey to check an opposing Chansey or Starmie. At full HP, Porygon can also threaten Thunder Wave on faster Pokemon like Tauros and Zapdos, but a critical hit attack puts it in range of being KOed by a non-critical hit attack, making switching in extremely risky.

Porygon makes use of the buffed Stadium Substitute to block status moves and create free turns against paralyzed foes. Snorlax's Ice Beam fails to break Substitute, giving Porygon a free turn and dissuading Snorlax from trying for a freeze. Substitute also makes Recover more efficient, as it allows Porygon to dip below 50% HP risk-free as long as it maintains enough HP to heal out of range of a critical hit Body Slam. Recover and Thunder Wave are crucial, as Recover enables Porygon to stall with Substitute, and paralysis is Porygon's main way of threatening Pokemon that otherwise don't mind switching in and gaining free turns. Ice Beam is the most common choice of attack for its ability to threaten freeze and its solid coverage, hitting Exeggutor, Rhydon, and Zapdos super effectively. Double-Edge is Porygon's strongest reliable STAB move and has more PP than Ice Beam. It does decent damage against most Pokemon, but it does almost nothing to Rhydon, Reflect Snorlax, and Cloyster while dealing recoil damage to Porygon. Substitute Porygon greatly appreciates paralysis support, especially against Snorlax so that Porygon does not have to risk a critical hit when paralyzing it. After Snorlax has been paralyzed, Porygon can use Recover and Substitute to fish for full paralysis and use these opportunities to attack. Depending on the opponent's team, Porygon may not want to reveal its only attack, so it can also PP stall and limit switches with Thunder Wave. This set should be paired with counters for the Pokemon that wall its only attack; for example, Chansey is on nearly every team and supports Porygon greatly, helping against the strong Psychic-types and other special attackers while paralyzing them with Thunder Wave. Slowbro is another great teammate, as it handles Amnesia Snorlax and helps check and paralyze foes that can trouble Porygon such as Exeggutor, Alakazam, Cloyster, and opposing Slowbro. Exeggutor is good for handling Rhydon, making it a great teammate for Double-Edge sets. Porygon can also drop its Speed stat by a single point to underspeed Rhydon, allowing Porygon to constantly use Recover and stall out Earthquake. Unfortunately, Rhydon is still heavily favored to win this matchup, as its Earthquake usually does over 50% to Porygon and OHKOes it with a critical hit, while Ice Beam seldom 2HKOes in return. However, being able to waste Earthquake PP can be quite useful, and Porygon is unlikely to gain anything from speed tying Rhydon if it lacks Ice Beam anyway.
