Analysis

Primarina’s excellent defensive typing and stats provide it with solid survivability, with which it can set up Calm Mind boosts and sweep. Thanks to Liquid Voice, Psychic Noise becomes a STAB move while also blocking the recovery of foes like Garganacl, Clefable, and Corviknight. On the other hand, Surf is a stronger STAB option and is usually paired with Torrent. While Moonblast is Primarina's strongest move, OHKOing Darkrai and Dragapult, using the weaker Draining Kiss trades a bit of damage for a solid recovery option, letting it accrue even more Calm Mind boosts. Substitute to help it gather Calm Mind boosts while blocking crippling status moves like Thunder Wave and Trick from walls like Galarian Slowking and revenge killers like Gholdengo. Having Psychic Noise as the fourth move alongside Surf can be a useful combo to ensure Primarina has an option to deny opposing recovery, as well as providing it a Psychic-type coverage option to break through Toxapex and hit opponents like Iron Moth even behind a Substitute. This EV spread forgoes Primarina’s lackluster Speed to max out its HP, increasing its bulk and survivability, especially with access to Draining Kiss. 8 Special Defense EVs let it guarantee survive two Choice Specs Protosynthesis Timid Walking Wake's Hydro Steam under sun after Leftovers. Primarina can benefit from alternate EV spreads as well; running Modest 252 HP / 172 SpA / 84 Spe allows it to outspeed Sinistcha, particularly when running Psychic Noise, and 176 Spe can help outspeed and beat Adamant Kingambit. Tera Poison gives Primarina a resistance Galarian Slowking’s Sludge Bomb and an immunity to Toxic; Tera Steel can grant a Poison immunity, but cannot grant Toxic Spikes absorption like Tera Poison can. Both can also reverse Primarina's weakness to Grass, helping it take on Rillaboom and Ogerpon-W. Tera Ghost is an alternative if the team could use another way to block Rapid Spin in a pinch as well as to wall Blissey's Seismic Toss. Primarina excels on bulky offense teams alongside other Pokemon that can both take and dish out hits. Offensive Steel-type staples like Kingambit and Gholdengo are perfect partners for Primarina thanks to their immunity to the Poison-type moves that threaten it. Both of these teammates also can put holes in the opposing team to help Primarina sweep late game, weakening checks like Galarian Slowking that it struggles with. Entry hazard setters like Great Tusk and Ting-Lu can set Stealth Rock and Spikes, which support Primarina’s sweeping late-game. Primarina does a good job of breaking through foes that maintain longevity in face of those hazards like Gliscor, Corviknight, and Clefable using Psychic Noise. Primarina’s biggest threats are the Ogerpon formes; Ogerpon-W is immune to its Water-type moves thanks to Water Absorb, all formes have a powerful Grass-type STAB move such as Power Whip or Ivy Cudgel that can dispatch Primarina quickly, and all formes of Ogerpon have access to Encore, which can take advantage of Primarina trying to use Calm Mind or Substitute. Teammates that can outspeed Ogerpon or Ogerpon-W and use Will-O-Wisp like Cinderace, Dragapult, and Galarian Weezing can help weaken their power, while bulky wallbreakers like Zamazenta can take hits and threaten them out. Other powerful opposing physical attackers like Kingambit and Focus Sash Ceruledge can survive hits from even Calm Mind-boosted Primarina and dispatch it in short order; switching to a teammate like Landorus-T with Rocky Helmet can weaken them with Intimidate and help wear them down over the course of a game. Primarina is also very vulnerable to hazards itself, so teammates like Great Tusk, Iron Treads, and Cinderace are useful to remove them with Rapid Spin and Court Change.

Analysis

Assault Vest Primarina is a great special tank while being a remarkable offensive threat itself, capable of trading hits against offensive teams. It can check threats like Walking Wake, Dragapult, Darkrai, and Iron Valiant and stomach even strong super effective hits from foes like Iron Moth and Raging Bolt, all while having a decent matchup against common physical attackers like Zamazenta, Great Tusk, and Cinderace. Psychic Noise hits Toxapex super effectively and blocks healing from walls like Blissey, Clodsire, and Clefable, allowing Primarina to chip them down for itself and its partners. It also lets Primarina pick off Zamazenta and Iron Moth behind a Substitute. Draining Kiss's recovery provides valuable longevity, which pairs extremely well with its hit-taking capabilities. Flip Turn turns Primarina into a pivot, letting it bring in a teammate in safely, either after being attacked or on predicted switches to gain momentum. Whirlpool can be used to stallbreak by trapping the likes of Blissey and Toxapex that may otherwise outlast Primarina, especially in conjunction with Psychic Noise to keep them low. While Torrent is preferred, Liquid Voice can be used on sets that forgo Surf to still maintain a strong STAB move from Psychic Noise; this also allows Primarina shut down even Tera Dark Blissey. Tera Poison and Steel improves its matchup against Iron Valiant, provides a poison immunity from foes like Pecharunt and Clodsire, and flip Primarina's Poison and Grass weakness against moves like Rillaboom's Wood Hammer and Iron Moth's Sludge Wave. Tera Poison lets Primarina maintain its decent matchup against Zamazenta and is better against Iron Moth and Focus Blast Darkrai, while Tera Steel lets it check Deoxys-S, Hatterene, and Galarian Slowking better and pivot more freely in the face of Stealth Rock. Tera Grass aids Primarina's matchup into Ogerpon-W and can help it against Raging Bolt in a pinch too. 48 Special Defense EVs allow Primarina to survive two Tera Water Choice Specs Walking Wake's Hydro Steam under sun. A more offensive spread is also an option, such as going for 80 HP / 252 SpA / 176 Spe; the Speed lets Primarina outspeed Adamant Kingambit and Ursaluna, with the remaining HP EVs allowing Primarina to still reach feats such as surviving Protosynthesis Thunderbolt from Raging Bolt, +1 Speed Booster Energy Iron Moth's Sludge Wave, +2 Gliscor's Earthquake, and two Heavy Slams from Zamazenta. Assault Vest Primarina is best used on bulky offense teams that appreciate a Pokemon that has both offensive and defensive prowess, generally teams that are particularly weak to special attackers. Landorus-T provides Intimidate and checks the physical attackers that Primarina struggles with like Kingambit and Great Tusk. Great Tusk is another great teammate, as it provides entry hazard removal and checks Galarian Slowking, which tends to threaten Primarina. In return, Primarina can handle threats like Darkrai and Walking Wake. Kingambit and Weavile appreciate support from Primarina that can switch in on and threaten Pokemon like Iron Valiant and Zamazenta. Furthermore, both of these Pokemon help check Galarian Slowking for Primarina, along with resisting Grass-type attacks. Gholdengo appreciates Primarina's ability to check Fire-types like Cinderace and Heatran, as well as Walking Wake. Primarina struggles with Grass-types like Ogerpon-W, Meowscarada, and Rillaboom, so it's essential to have checks to these such as Rillaboom, Cinderace, and Kingambit. Cinderace, aside from resisting Grass-type attacks, can also help with hazard removal with Court Change, allowing Primarina to switch in more often. Dragapult and Cinderace can form a great pivoting core with Primarina, and they can also spread burn in order to help improve Primarina's matchup against physical attackers like Great Tusk.
