Moves With the use of Spore, Smeargle increases its chances of being able to use Imprison + Transform while taking minimal damage. Imprison prevents the foe from using moves it shares with Smeargle; when paired with Transform, this won't let the foe use any of its moves. The fourth moveslot is pretty flexible. King's Shield can help Smeargle take a physical hit it otherwise wouldn't before putting the opponent to sleep. Magic Coat can help Smeargle out by bouncing Taunt and other status moves back to the user. Usually, you would use Magic Coat if you are running Quick Claw. Lovely Kiss can help with Spore's problem of not being able to put Grass-types to sleep. Substitute can help Smeargle get enough sleep turns and allow it to take a hit from behind the Substitute to put the foe to sleep once more. It also allows Smeargle to evade a super effective Z-Move from Pokemon such as bulky Dragonium Z Dragonite and Ghostium Z Aegislash after using Transform. Set Details Running 252 Speed EVs with a Speed-boosting nature makes Smeargle outspeed as many Pokemon as possible. Speed is Smeargle's only useful stat, as it relies on Speed to win. 252 HP EVs make Smeargle slightly better at taking hits, and the EVs aren't useful elsewhere. After Transform, Smeargle copies the opposing Pokemon's stats besides HP, which it retains. Mental Herb can help Smeargle put Taunt users to sleep. Quick Claw is also an option, as it can let Smeargle steal away games with its 20% chance of letting Smeargle use a sleep-inducing move before an otherwise faster foe can move. Sitrus Berry can restore HP lost from Struggle recoil and heal Smeargle using Substitute. Usage Tips Use Smeargle only if you suspect that your opponent will bring a slower tank or wall. When you send out Smeargle, you should always use Spore first unless you expect a physical hit from a faster foe, in which case you can use King's Shield, or if you're facing a Grass-type, which is immune to Spore. After using Spore on the opposing Pokemon, use Imprison and then Transform to force it to use Struggle. Team Options Pokemon like Pheromosa and Zeraora benefit from Smeargle's ability to scare off bulkier builds, while Smeargle appreciates their Speed stats against faster teams. The opponent will hesitate to use bulky Pokemon against a Smeargle team, so Pokemon that enjoy having these walls not picked like Mega Lopunny and Donphan make good team options. Smeargle can deal with slow, bulky, powerful Pokemon like Mega Mawile, which benefits hyper offensive teams unable to OHKO these Pokemon.

Moves Sticky Web is the premier utility move for Smeargle, allowing its otherwise slower teammates to outpace faster grounded Pokemon. Nuzzles allows Smeargle to cripple non-Ground-type Pokemon with paralysis and avoid being crippled by fast Taunt leads like Yveltal and Deoxys-S. Taunt prevents opposing Pokemon from easily setting up on Smeargle. Whirlwind is useful against setup Pokemon like Substitute + Dragon Dance Mega Salamence and Zygarde, which would otherwise be problematic for a Sticky Web-oriented team. Toxic Thread cripples opposing non-Poison-type Pokemon by dropping their Speed and inducing poison, which can help Smeargle avoid being shut down by Ground-types that are immune to Nuzzle and faster Taunt users. Set Details A Jolly nature with maximum Speed investment is mandatory for Smeargle to be as fast as it can be to effectively set up entry hazards. Maximum HP investment increases Smeargle's bulk. However, it's essentially useless due to Smeargle's frailty and vulnerability of getting OHKOed or 2HKOed by many Pokemon in the tier. Focus Sash guarantees Smeargle the opportunity to use one of its utility moves before fainting. Own Tempo prevents Smeargle from getting confused, which risks breaking its own Focus Sash. Usage Tips Smeargle's only role is a suicide lead that helps its teammates by setting up Sticky Web. Generally, it is ideal for Smeargle to set up Sticky Web first and then deal with the opposing lead Pokemon. However, this is solely based on lead matchup. It is important to analyze the opposing lead Pokemon in determining the optimal play for Smeargle. For example, if the opposing lead Pokemon knows Taunt, Smeargle should use Nuzzle first to cripple the foe and then set up Sticky Web. If the opposing lead Pokemon has moves with secondary effects, such as flinch or burn, it is important to realize that those factors risk preventing Smeargle from setting Sticky Web. Smeargle should only be led if the opposing team does not have a lead that can directly deal with it. For example, opposing lead Excadrill can be problematic, as it is immune to Nuzzle and Toxic Thread, can spin Sticky Web away, and can break Smeargle's Focus Sash. Mega Gengar poses as a threat to Smeargle, as it can either use Taunt to prevent Sticky Web or use Substitute to prevent being paralyzed. Therefore, Smeargle must be used with the right predictions. If the opposing lead Pokemon is a setup user, Smeargle can get Sticky Web up first and then phaze it with Whirlwind. Against lead hazard removers, Smeargle can use Toxic Thread to lower their Speed and get Sticky Web set up while the foe is poisoned. This will pressure the foe into staying in against Smeargle to remove hazards, but it will lose out from poison in the long run. If Smeargle cannot set up Sticky Web due to lead matchup, it can help cripple the opposing lead Pokemon with its status moves. Team Options Strong wallbreakers such as Swords Dance Mega Lucario, Swords Dance Rayquaza, and Calm Mind Primal Kyogre, which would otherwise struggle against offensive teams, can take advantage of Sticky Web by setting up. Since Smeargle's primary role is to set up Sticky Web, an offensive Stealth Rock setter like Primal Groudon and Necrozma-DM ensures that the entry hazard can be set up more than once, as opposing bulky offense and balance teams will attempt to get rid of Sticky Web. This means that the opposing team's defensive core will be vulnerable to the offensive pressure of trying to remove Sticky Web and will concede with either Stealth Rock, Sticky Web, or both for the duration of the battle. Ultra Necrozma benefits from Sticky Web, as it can outspeed threats like Mega Gengar. Its pre-Ultra Burst form can be either Necrozma-DM or Necrozma-DW depending on team composition. Necrozma-DM is able to be an offensive threat with Swords Dance without transforming into Ultra Necrozma, and Necrozma-DW can spinblock prior to transforming. Offensive Fairy-types like Choice Specs Xerneas can deal with crippled Yveltal, Mega Salamence, and Marshadow. Arceus-Fairy can set up with Calm Mind and provides another option for a Stealth Rock setter. Mega Diancie is a great teammate for Smeargle, as Magic Bounce covers most Taunt leads for Smeargle. Mega Diancie also has access to Stealth Rock and Explosion to complement Smeargle's Sticky Web and punch a hole into offensive teams early. Smeargle can cripple opposing threats with Nuzzle, which can slow down faster threats like Choice Scarf Yveltal, Geomancy Xerneas, Marshadow, and Deoxys-A that teammates can check or counter more easily. Taunt users like Yveltal can prevent opposing teams from potentially undoing Smeargle's entry hazards with Defog. On the other hand, Ghost-types like Marshadow and Mega Gengar can block Rapid Spin from opposing Excadrill and Smeargle.

Moves As the only viable Normal-type suicide lead, Smeargle uses Stealth Rock to support its teammates by wearing down opposing teams. Sticky Web support from Smeargle lets teammates have an advantage against Speed-reliant offensive teams. This is especially helpful against Fighting-type teams with threats such as Choice Scarf Terrakion and Heracross. Spore combined with Focus Sash allows Smeargle to incapacitate opposing lead Pokemon for a few turns and set entry hazards without much fear. Nuzzle allows Smeargle to not be Taunt bait and spread paralysis, the latter of which is well appreciated by offensive teammates. After putting a Pokemon to sleep with Spore, Smeargle can also paralyze switch-ins using Nuzzle. Magic Coat is an option over Nuzzle that allows Smeargle to bounce back moves such as Taunt. However, it is heavily prediction reliant, and a poor prediction can result in Smeargle not being able to set up hazards. Taunt is also an option to stop slower Defog users such as Mantine from clearing the entry hazards, thereby keeping opposing teams pressured. It stops opposing hazard setters such as Ferrothorn as well. Set Details Maximum Speed investment along with a Jolly nature allows Smeargle to outspeed and cripple slower Pokemon such as Swampert, Mantine, and Bisharp. Maximum HP investment improves its overall bulk, allowing it to take uninvested attacks such as Scald from Empoleon and Swampert. Since Smeargle has bad defenses, Focus Sash is used to ensure that Smeargle can almost always get some form of entry hazard up. Own Tempo, albeit situational, helps against Hurricane users. Usage Tips As a dedicated lead, Smeargle should usually be sent out first to set entry hazards. However, when against teams with faster Taunt users such as Cobalion and Deoxys-S, Smeargle should not be used as a lead, because those Taunt users will shut it down completely. Most of the time, Smeargle should use Spore first to put foes to sleep so it can set up hazards liberally, but when against teams with Pokemon that can switch into Spore such as Grass-types, it is important to focus on setting up hazards. Magic Bounce users such as Mega Diancie and Mega Sableye need to be taken out before Smeargle can attempt to set up hazards. If you're facing them, force them out on the first turn by leading with a teammate like Diggersby and double switch to Smeargle for a single guaranteed hazard before they Mega Evolve. Spore can be saved for late-game to cripple a troublesome defensive wall like Celesteela or a setup sweeper such as Bisharp. Nuzzle should be used to spread paralysis after using Spore, as a sleeping Pokemon will usually be switched to one vulnerable to it. It also lets Smeargle cripple setup sweepers like Taunt Gyarados. Against faster Taunt leads, Smeargle should utilize Nuzzle to cripple them or Magic Coat to bounce back the Taunt. Against offensive types such as Ground, Fairy, and Fighting, Sticky Web should be prioritized, as it gives your team a Speed advantage. Against defensive teams such as Poison, Stealth Rock should be prioritized so KOs will be easier to secure. Team Options Diggersby is a great teammate for Smeargle, as it can not only take advantage of Stealth Rock and Sticky Web but also pressure Defog and Rapid Spin users such as Mantine and Armaldo. Diggersby can also utilize a Swords Dance set to take advantage of the free turns that Spore provides. Mega Lopunny appreciates Sticky Web support letting it outspeed Choice Scarf users such as Terrakion and Victini, allowing it to pressure teams more effectively. It also eases Steel- and Rock-type matchups thanks to STAB High Jump Kick. Spore and Nuzzle support from Smeargle gives more setup opportunities to Porygon-Z, which is a fantastic special sweeper. Sticky Web allows it to outspeed even faster Choice Scarf users such as Victini and Greninja when at +1. Offensive Staraptor finds it easy to wallbreak thanks to Stealth Rock support and can deal with Fighting more easily with Sticky Web. Mega Pidgeot has fantastic Speed that is only augmented by Sticky Web support and can handle Fighting- and Steel-type teams due to its coverage of Hurricane and Heat Wave. Entry hazard support from Smeargle allows Meloetta to wallbreak more efficiently, as it need not worry about faster grounded threats such as Choice Specs Keldeo. Bewear's low Speed is mitigated by Sticky Web support, which enables it to wallbreak teams better. Its ability Fluffy allows it to be an offensive check to priority users such as Mega Scizor and Azumarill, which are troublesome for offensive teams.

Moves Dark Void targets Pokemon immune to Spore like Grass-types, Zebstrika, and Bouffalant and puts them to sleep. Spore is a perfectly accurate alternative that gives Smeargle more turns to lay down entry hazards and cripple the foe. Stealth Rock can help to break Focus Sashes and Sturdy while dealing some chip damage every time the opponent's Pokemon switch in. Sticky Web lets slower wallbreakers outpace Pokemon they weren't able to before. Spikes can be used over Sticky Web if Smeargle's teammates like the extra chip damage. Nuzzle can paralyze the foe before Smeargle goes down and catch switch-ins after Smeargle has put something to sleep. Alternatively, Destiny Bond lets Smeargle take down the foe if it KOes Smeargle with an attacking move. Explosion can be used to block Rapid Spin and Defog but can be somewhat weak, since Smeargle is not intended to do much offensively. Set Details Focus Sash guarantees Smeargle will survive one hit from full health, letting it always do something before going down. 252 Speed EVs and a Timid nature let Smeargle outspeed as many Pokemon as possible, such as Adamant Monferno, Adamant Stoutland, and some Grumpig variants. 252 Defense EVs let Smeargle take priority attacks slightly better to help it avoid being picked off. Usage Tips Use Smeargle as a suicide lead so that it can start pressuring the foe. Always try to put a Pokemon to sleep so that Smeargle can get both of its entry hazards up. Watch out for Grass-immune Pokemon or Vullaby coming in on Spore, though. Set up whichever entry hazard will be more important throughout the match first in case anything goes wrong, like the foe waking up too early. At Team Preview, watch out for faster Taunt Pokemon, such as Grumpig, Floatzel, and especially Electrode, since it can't be paralyzed by Nuzzle. Sometimes it's best to keep Smeargle in the back if your lead match-up looks undesirable so that it can lay more entry hazards later. Team Options Slower wallbreakers like Stoutland and Mr. Mime appreciate being able to outspeed the majority of the tier with Sticky Web up. Spinblockers, such as Dusknoir and Drifblim, and Defog deterrents, such as Pawniard and Purugly, are also really good for keeping Smeargle's entry hazards up. Smeargle loves being on offensive teams, so Pokemon that can grab momentum like Rotom-F and Monferno make for excellent partners. Ground-types like Golem, Marowak, and Gabite help to stop Zebstrika and Electrode, which can effectively limit Smeargle to setting one entry hazard, if any.

Moves Spore gives Smeargle some extra time to set up entry hazards while also crippling an opponent's Pokemon by putting it to sleep. Stealth Rock helps secure KOs for Smeargle's teammates and punishes Flying-types and Levitate users. Sticky Web slows down the opponent's grounded Pokemon, which gives Smeargle's teammates a good advantage against faster attackers. Explosion deals some chip damage and grants momentum to the rest of Smeargle's team while also blocking Rapid Spin and Defog for one turn. Whirlwind forces out Pokemon that might want to set up on Smeargle. Nuzzle could be used to paralyze the foe and has the added benefits of not being halted by Taunt and breaking Focus Sashes, giving Smeargle an advantage over Accelgor and Qwilfish, which can otherwise incapacitate Smeargle with Encore and Taunt, respectively. Dark Void could be used if you are worried about Pokemon that are immune to Spore such as Venusaur and Virizion, although the move's imperfect accuracy is concerning. Magic Coat bounces back entry hazards and status moves, such as Stealth Rock and Taunt; however, Qwilfish is the only Taunt user in RU that is faster than Smeargle, and most Stealth Rock users are slower than Smeargle, so they can be put to sleep beforehand. Taunt can be used to prevent slower entry hazard setters from laying down entry hazards of their own as well as prevent Defog users from switching in and removing Smeargle's entry hazards. Set Details A Jolly nature along with maximum Speed EVs allows Smeargle to outspeed as much as possible. As Smeargle has little use for its defenses, 252 EVs can be invested into Attack to boost Explosion's damage output. Focus Sash allows Smeargle to survive any one hit, giving it an extra opportunity to set up entry hazards. Due to the fact that Smeargle has no offensive presence, Own Tempo is its most useful ability, although Technician can be used to boost Nuzzle's power. If Smeargle isn't carrying an attacking move, the Attack EVs should be moved to Defense or Special Defense. Usage Tips Smeargle works most effectively as a lead, as leading with it keeps its Focus Sash intact and its low bulk means that it will likely be KOed early in the game. Smeargle should focus on putting the foe to sleep first, and then it should set up entry hazards during the free turns it receives. In the case your opponent decides to lead with a Pokemon that Smeargle can put to sleep but can switch into a Pokemon immune to Spore afterwards, it is most optimal to set up entry hazards immediately, prioritizing Sticky Web against offensive teams and Stealth Rock against more defensive ones. It should be noted that several Pokemon immune to Spore in the tier can be hit by Nuzzle, with the exceptions being Rotom-C and Torterra, which are immune to it, as well as Roselia and Trevenant, which can heal themselves with Natural Cure. Taunt should be used against slower entry hazard setters to prevent them from laying down entry hazards of their own as well as Defog users switching into Smeargle such as Flygon and Togetic. Team Options Pokemon that pressure entry hazard removers, such as Glalie against Defog users and Hoopa and Spiritomb against Rapid Spin users, are great partners for Smeargle to have. Wallbreakers such as Meloetta and Exploud appreciate the entry hazards Smeargle provides, as Stealth Rock's chip damage makes punching holes in the opponent's team easier. Setup sweepers such as Virizion and Houndoom also benefit from entry hazard support, as Stealth Rock damage ensures some key OHKOs and Sticky Web helps them outrun some of their checks. Entry hazard support also makes cleaning much easier for fast attackers such as Delphox and Jolteon. Braviary works well with Smeargle, as it appreciates Sticky Web support and can deter Defoggers with Defiant.

Moves Spore is useful to put opposing Pokemon to sleep, giving Smeargle more time to set up entry hazards. Dark Void can be used instead if you're worried about Grass-types such as Mega Abomasnow and Chesnaught or Overcoat users such as Mandibuzz and Escavalier, though the accuracy is off-putting. Stealth Rock secures KOs for offensive Pokemon and also gets residual damage on Flying-types and Levitate users, which can avoid other entry hazards. Sticky Web lowers the Speed of opposing grounded Pokemon, giving slower offensive Pokemon such as Chandelure and Hydreigon a chance to shine. Spikes is an option if you're not running a team centered around Sticky Web, as it gets more residual damage. Taunt is almost mandatory so that Smeargle can shut down Defoggers and not lose the entry hazards that it has worked hard to set up. Alternatively, Magic Coat can be used to reflect opposing entry hazards as well as Taunt, though forgoing Taunt causes Smeargle to get manhandled by Defoggers. Set Details Maximum investment in Speed and a Timid nature are used to make Smeargle as speedy as possible. The rest of the EVs go into its HP, allowing it to take a few hits. Own Tempo is Smeargle's only usable ability. Focus Sash almost guarantees that Smeargle will set up an entry hazard and is pretty much mandatory because of its terrible defenses. Usage Tips Smeargle should only be used on hyper offensive builds, as other team archetypes would generally prefer an entry hazard setter with more staying power. Smeargle is best used as a suicide lead to ensure that its Focus Sash will remain intact. When using Smeargle, you should aim to put the foe to sleep first and then set up the entry hazard that benefits you the most in that situation. Be sure to use Taunt if you predict a switch to a Defogger that is faster than Smeargle. Team Options Taunt users such as Crobat and Mega Aerodactyl are highly recommended to help prevent Smeargle's entry hazards from being removed by Defog. Likewise, U-turn and Volt Switch users such as Hydreigon, Moltres, Mega Beedrill, and Cobalion can pivot into said Taunt users if needed, though a bit of prediction is required on the player's part. Wallbreakers such as Hydreigon, Haxorus, Entei, Nidoking, Heracross, and Chandelure appreciate the entry hazards that Smeargle provides, as it helps them net key OHKOs and 2HKOs and outrun faster threats. Likewise, sweepers such as Feraligatr, Cobalion, and Venomoth also like being able to get some KOs they wouldn't normally get, as do cleaners such as Sharpedo, Yanmega, Mega Beedrill, and Choice Scarf Krookodile. Pokemon with the ability Defiant, such as Tornadus and Braviary, can switch into and take advantage of opposing Defog users, which is a great help for Sticky Web and other hazard-stacking teams. Smeargle should be paired with Pokemon that can switch into and threaten Pokemon looking to remove Smeargle's entry hazards; for example, Toxicroak can switch into and start setting up on Empoleon, while Tyrantrum and Mega Aerodactyl can take care of Crobat. Ghost-types such as Chandelure and Doublade also make for excellent teammates, as they are able to spinblock.

Moves Shell Smash is used for the boosts, and Baton Pass is used to pass the boosts to the recipient. Spore induces sleep, which makes it easier to boost and use Baton Pass. Hidden Power Steel is used to OHKO Mega Diancie at +2 thanks to the Technician boost, a big threat to Smeargle and intended Shell Smash recipients. The use of Hidden Power Steel over Iron Head or Magnet Bomb avoids situations where Mega Diancie gains a Defense boost from Diamond Storm as Smeargle uses Shell Smash and leaves Smeargle unable to OHKO it after a boost. Set Details Maximum Speed investment with a Timid nature is essential to outspeed many Pokemon in the tier and put them to sleep, such as Primal Groudon, Primal Kyogre, Giratina-O, and some Xerneas and Dialga sets. Maximum Special Attack EVs are needed to OHKO Mega Diancie after the Shell Smash boosts. Focus Sash ideally gives Smeargle two turns to set up Shell Smash and use Baton Pass. Finally, Technician is used to give Hidden Power Steel the extra power it needs to bypass Mega Diancie. Usage Tips Never lead with Smeargle unless you are 100% sure you can pull a fast win, which in most cases isn't possible. One should use Shell Smash, then use Spore, and finally use Baton Pass. It's important to pay attention when using Spore if there are Magic Bounce users on the opponent's team. Even if it's tempting to Shell Smash in a one-on-one scenario against an unsuspecting Diancie and OHKO it with Hidden Power Steel on the following turn, it is highly recommended not to do this unless you are absolutely sure there are no Pokemon with priority moves on the opposing team. It is important to keep Stealth Rock off the field and play according to your opponent's Stealth Rock user. It's also strongly advised to come in safely after one of your Pokemon has been KOed because Smeargle needs to have all of its HP to do its job. Finally, choose the best recipient according to the opponent's team; you will only be able to pass a boost once. If the opponent has an Arceus, it's preferable to scout to see what their Arceus forme is before setting up. For example, if you pass to Diancie only to find the opponent is using Arceus-Water or Arceus-Ground, that would be a waste. Team Options Pair Smeargle with a Pokemon that removes entry hazards, especially Stealth Rock. Primal Groudon is a mandatory recipient because it has monstrous offenses, great typing, and good bulk. Using Diancie is also mandatory. It has great mixed offensive stats and moves and it handles status, can reflect phazing moves with Magic Bounce, and resists Extreme Speed priority. Giratina-O is a highly recommended Pokemon too because it can check the most popular physically offensive Pokemon and can clear entry hazards with Defog. Otherwise, Arceus-Ghost is a great answer to Ditto and can use Defog too. Finally, it's very important to have a Darkrai check on the team because it's a very common threat to Smeargle.

Moves Dark Void is hands down the best move in the format. The ability to put both targets to sleep with a move that is relatively accurate is great utility. This constant threat of putting both of your opponent's Pokemon to sleep is the closest thing Smeargle has to offensive presence, and it is a great tool for Smeargle to use. This in conjunction with Follow Me makes Smeargle really disruptive to the opposing team; with the ability to redirect attacks away from its partner, it can aid setup or give a free turn to attack. Follow Me is a rare move in the format due to its poor distribution, with the only other Pokemon with access to the move being Lucario, Furret, and Pachirisu. This gives Smeargle a niche in being the only attack redirector that can put its targets to sleep without being ignored by Grass-types and Safety Goggles Rotom-H. Your choice for what to use in the last two moveslots comes down to the needs of your team. Fake Out is useful to flinch, immobilizing the target Pokemon and giving Smeargle another way of providing a free turn for its partner, as well as breaking Focus Sashes. However, Encore is a great way to lock opposing Pokemon into setup moves, letting Smeargle check Pokemon like Substitute Aegislash, Swords Dance Scizor, and Dragon Dance variants of Gyarados and Tyranitar. Additionally, it can be used to lock slower Pokemon into Protect, forcing them to switch out and waste a valuable turn in the fast-paced metagame. Spiky Shield is literally a better Protect, blocking all moves, getting chip damage when Smeargle is contacted, and being nigh impossible to lock with Imprison because of its low distribution. However, King's Shield lets Smeargle check physical attackers that commonly use contact moves, such as Kangaskhan, Garchomp, and Talonflame, as well as physically oriented Fake Out users like Mienshao and the aforementioned Kangaskhan. This, however, comes at the cost of the ability to block status moves, most notably Taunt. Also, it is important to note that Bisharp isn't affected by the Attack drop due to Defiant. Set Details Maximum Speed investment with a Timid nature is chosen to maximize Smeargle's Speed while minimizing the damage Smeargle takes from Foul Play. Affecting Fake Out's power isn't important due to its low power regardless. The rest of the EVs are allocated in such a way as to maximize Smeargle's overall bulk. Focus Sash is the item of choice due to Smeargle's nonexistent bulk making the use of any other item unfeasible. Moody is the ability of choice because it can very easily make Smeargle a monster to face in just a few turns. However, it is a double-edged sword, as Smeargle can get accuracy, evasion, and Speed drops. Own Tempo could be used if you don't like this unpredictability, but confusion-inducing moves are incredibly rare, and the chance to make Smeargle monstrous is almost always worth the tradeoff. Usage Tips Spamming Dark Void is counterproductive because it fails when used on already sleeping Pokemon, and the threat that Smeargle could use it creates mindgames that are removed if it only uses said move. Follow Me needs to be used with the same level of care as Dark Void, as the combination of said moves is what makes Smeargle so disruptive. Smeargle's support options allow it to give its partners free turns to set up or a free turn, so make the most of all the options Smeargle has. Finally, don't be afraid to use Spiky Shield if you are unsure about what to do. It is a great way to scout and see what your opponent's strategy is, and protection is all the more valuable on a Pokemon as frail as Smeargle. Spiky Shield also adds to the mindgames that Smeargle can play. Team Options Smeargle is a valuable asset to more offensively oriented teams. However, it also needs support to come in safely due to its immense frailty, making Pokemon that are solid switch-ins or switch-outs such as Amoonguss, Garchomp, and Talonflame solid teammates. Smeargle's middling Speed stat means that it benefits greatly from Tailwind support, making users such as Aerodactyl, Noivern, and the aforementioned Talonflame solid partners. Common users of setup moves, such as Tyranitar, Scizor, and the previously mentioned Aegislash, benefit from Follow Me, Fake Out, Dark Void, Encore, and King's Shield aiding their setup. Similarly, frail attackers like Mega Lucario and Mega Aerodactyl benefit from Smeargle's ability to redirect attacks away from them. As for support that Smeargle itself benefits from, users of Quick Guard, such as Mienshao and Talonflame, are great partners to prevent the use of moves like Fake Out, Sucker Punch, and Gale Wings Brave Bird; similarly, Wide Guard from Pokemon like Aegislash and Machamp makes the mindgames that Smeargle can already create even more potent, and allows it to be less reliant on Follow Me. Pokemon with access to Drought or Drizzle, i.e. Politoed and Mega Charizard Y, respectively, are great partners for their ability to clear hail and sandstorm. Aromatisse's Aroma Veil is a great way of preventing Smeargle from being on the wrong end of a Taunt. Finally, other users of Fake Out provide lots of opportunities for Smeargle to use Dark Void, making users such as Mega Kangaskhan, Mienshao, and Mega Blastoise great allies, with the latter also benefiting from the Follow Me support keeping Water Spout at maximum power. This opportunity creation concept also applies to Amoonguss as it can redirect attacks away from Smeargle to fire off a Dark Void, as well as helping to preserve Smeargle's Focus Sash.

Moves Dark Void puts both foes to sleep, which can allow Smeargle's partner to set up. Spiky Shield can stop incoming Fake Out or Taunt and damages foes that target Smeargle with physical attacks. Follow Me can redirect attacks away from Smeargle's partner, which is especially useful if its partner is setting up; furthermore, it is also Smeargle's most consistent option to support its team, as it doesn't have to rely on the shaky accuracy of Dark Void. Fake Out can create free turns for partners to set up or finish off a foe. Wide Guard can be used to stop common spread attacks such as Origin Pulse and Precipice Blades. Set Details 252 Speed EVs with a Timid nature allow Smeargle to be as fast as possible. 252 Defense EVs allow Smeargle to survive some weaker physical hits such as Mega Kangaskhan's Power-Up Punch. 252 HP EVs should be used if Smeargle is running Transform, as its HP stays the same after it uses the move. Focus Sash is used because Smeargle cannot survive many attacks without it. Moody is the preferred ability, as even though it can be unreliable, a single accuracy or Speed can boost can win a game. Usage Tips Smeargle is generally used as a lead to get off an immediate Dark Void. It is not good to switch Smeargle into attacks, as it is quite frail; it is reasonable, however, to switch Smeargle in on Ghost-type attacks or after a partner has fainted. Using Spiky Shield on the first turn can be good if there is a Fake Out or Taunt user that Smeargle's partner can KO. Dark Void has a 36% chance of missing one target, so it is better to make a different play if you don't have to take that risk. Team Options Almost any Pokemon that can apply good offensive pressure appreciates Smeargle's support. Mega Kangaskhan is one of the best partners for Smeargle, as it provides Fake Out support while Smeargle can help it set up with Dark Void. Xerneas appreciates Dark Void to help it set up Geomancy. Tailwind setters such as Crobat and Talonflame can set up Tailwind for Smeargle, which can allow it to get a faster Dark Void off. Partners with Quick Guard can be useful in stopping Prankster Taunt and Fake Out, and they also help with Brave Bird from Talonflame.

Smeargle is the cornerstone of a notorious team that is infamous for its idiosyncratic and noninteractive playing style: as the only legal Geomancy user in the tier, Smeargle sets up early and uses Baton Pass to pivot to Mega-Gardevoir, which then sweeps with its +2 Hyper Voice. While the team has fallen out of competitive favor some, it is recommended new players be acquainted with Smeargle, as not knowing the matchup will lead to their demise. Smeargle aims to set up Power Herb-boosted Geomancy and Baton Pass it to Gardevoir as soon as possible. Spore is Smeargle's most consistent way of shutting down a foe by itself, especially once Smeargle is at +2 Speed, as having only one attacking foe to deal with makes it easier to maneuver and get off a Baton Pass without the desired target taking too much damage. Taunt is Smeargle's only way of stopping Safety Goggles Volcanion's Haze, which can shut down the strategy entirely. Spiky Shield is an option against Fake Out leads, such as Kangaskhan, and lets Smeargle's teammates maneuver into better positions for it to use Geomancy and Baton Pass. The EV spread lets Smeargle take a Modest Kyurem-B Ice Beam without Friend Guard while also surviving Landorus-T's Earthquake and Mega Diancie's Diamond Storm with Friend Guard. Smeargle is commonly led with Clefairy, whose Follow Me redirects incoming attacks from either Smeargle or the Baton Pass target and whose Friend Guard severely improves Smeargle's survivability to get its key Geomancy off. Smeargle serves no utility if it doesn't pull off the Geomancy Baton Pass or once it has already passed the boosts, effectively rendering it a dead slot. The entire team's strategy hinges on this setup, so Fake Out users and redirection must support Smeargle as well as they can. Gardevoir is the intended Geomancy target, as it can sweep teams with +2 Hyper Voice. The same team also uses Heatran, which helps Gardevoir blast through Steel-types, such as Ferrothorn and Aegislash, and is an additional Geomancy target if Gardevoir can't come in safely, as +2 Heatran's Heat Wave is still a scary prospect. As this entire team's strategy hinges on successfully setting up Geomancy, Smeargle must be supported by redirection and Fake Out users. Amoonguss redirects and improves the Trick Room matchup, and Clefairy redirects and can use Icy Wind and Encore, causing key Speed drops and forcing out Fake Out users so Smeargle can set up easier. Scrafty is a Fake Out user with Intimidate that supports Gardevoir and Smeargle by taking physical attacks and using Quick Guard to prevent Thundurus's Prankster Thunder Wave and Taunt, which would stop Gardevoir's sweep and Smeargle's setup, respectively.

Moves Spore puts slower Pokemon such as support Primal Groudon to sleep, giving Smeargle extra time to accumulate Moody boosts. Spiky Shield helps to stall for extra turns, as well as dealing chip damage to Pokemon with contact attacks, while King's Shield can potentially allow Smeargle to survive attacks from weakened foes, such as avoiding the 2HKO from Extreme Killer Arceus. Ingrain helps support Smeargle's teammates by preventing phazing and providing some passive recovery, while Baton Pass passes Moody boosts and Ingrain to a teammate. Set Details Moody allows Smeargle to accumulate stat boosts without the need for setup moves. A Focus Sash allows Smeargle to survive a single attack before Baton Passing its stat boosts or putting its foe to Sleep. Maximum Speed investment and a Timid nature help Smeargle to outspeed as many foes as possible to put them to sleep before they can attack, while Maximum HP investment provides a slight bulk increase to weather weaker attacks, such as avoiding the 2HKO from Klefki's Dazzling Gleam. Usage Tips Smeargle's only function is to pass Moody boosts and Ingrain to its teammates. Ideally, Smeargle should be Baton Passed Speed boosts from a teammate such as Scolipede as it is brought in so that it can outspeed and Spore foes that would normally be faster, such as Arceus-Ground. Smeargle should be brought in versus slower foes that it can put to sleep with Spore and accumulate boosts against, as any faster foe can easily KO it if its Focus Sash is broken or leave it in range of priority users. Ingrain only needs to be used if the opposing team has a foe with a phazing move, such as Primal Groudon or Skarmory, as the passive recovery is fairly useless. Stall for as many turns as possible with Spiky Shield or King's Shield in order to obtain extra Moody boosts to pass on to Smeargle's teammates, but be wary because stalling for too many turns can give time for foes to wake up or set up. This can be especially dangerous when facing priority users such as Arceus, which can KO Smeargle without giving it a second chance to put them to sleep. Team Options This set should only be used on full Baton Pass teams. Only teammates such as Scolipede, Mr. Mime, Zapdos, and others that can utilize Baton Pass to accumulate stat boosts before passing them to Espeon to sweep should be used. Entry hazard removers can be useful for keeping Smeargle's Focus Sash intact; however, they cannot be easily fit onto Baton Pass teams.

Moves Dark Void puts both opposing Pokemon to sleep and can completely turn around a match. Once the foes are asleep, Smeargle's teammates are free to set up; Follow Me can be used to keep your sweeper from taking damage or being statused. However, due to Smeargle's incredibly low defensive stats, be aware that this is almost always a one-time use strategy. Spiky Shield protects Smeargle from Taunt users and damages foes that target Smeargle with physical attacks that turn. Running King's Shield is incredibly risky, as it still leaves Smeargle susceptible to Taunt and other status conditions, although it does allow it to cripple physical attackers. Tailwind can be used in the final slot to give both Smeargle and its teammates a Speed boost, and Fake Out can be run to incapacitate a threat for one turn. Set Details 252 Speed EVs allow Smeargle to be as fast as possible so that it can spam Dark Void and put foes to sleep. The 252 EVs in Defense let Smeargle survive a Power-Up Punch from Mega Kangaskhan. Moody is an unreliable ability, but it can be beneficial, as getting an accuracy boost can put you in a good spot for the entire match. Just remember to watch Smeargle's boosts and react accordingly to each one. Focus Sash is needed so that Smeargle is not OHKOed and is able to at least use Dark Void once. Usage Tips Leading with Smeargle and going for Dark Void or Fake Out is generally the best option, as it is very difficult to switch it in later in the match without breaking its Focus Sash. You can continue to spam Dark Void or Follow Me so that your attackers can safely set up. Be careful when using Follow Me, as Smeargle's defenses usually only allow it to use the move once. When Smeargle is facing a Taunt user, the best option is to use Spiky Shield and then Taunt or KO the foe. Team Options Mega Kangaskhan is one of the best partners for Smeargle, as it is completely free to set up with Power-Up Punches or just dish out crazy damage after Smeargle uses Dark Void. It can also use Fake Out to guarantee that Smeargle can Dark Void the first turn. Other setup sweepers such as Mega Salamence, Azumarill, and Scizor are also generally good partners for Smeargle. Another strategy is to pair Smeargle with Perish Song Mega Gengar, as Smeargle can spam Dark Void for the three Perish Song turns, making the foes unable to react.

Despite being relatively slow, Smeargle's access to Spore makes it a reliable suicide spiker. This set is quite simple to use; simply send out Smeargle as your lead Pokemon. Focus Sash should prevent Smeargle from being knocked out on the first turn, so use Spore on the foe, and proceed to set up as many layers of Spikes as possible. If another Pokemon uses Taunt or a status move on Smeargle, however, then Smeargle might be forced to switch out. To remedy this, Magic Coat is listed to punish such Pokemon. Smeargle may also have time to set up additional hazards, such as Stealth Rock, as well. This reduces the need of having another Pokemon to set up Stealth Rock on your team, and with two different entry hazards on the foe's side, Smeargle's offensive teammates will have a field day. However, after using Spore and setting up a few layers of Spikes, Smeargle becomes a liability to your team. In order to maximize its usefulness, you may wish to use Endeavor over Stealth Rock on the fourth moveslot instead. Maximum Speed is used on this Smeargle to ensure that it can outspeed as many Pokemon as possible. Since this set is not carrying any offensive moves, it would be silly to invest EVs in Attack or Special Attack, so the remaining EVs go to Defense and HP. Do note that, although this set works great as a lead, it should never be brought out as a lead if you see that your opponent has Xatu on Team Preview, as Xatu can easily reflect Smeargle's attacks back at it with Magic Bounce. Spikes Smeargle can fit on just about any team, but it is best appreciated on heavy offense or bulky offense teams, who can net important OHKOs and 2HKOs with Spikes damage. However, this set must have a spinblocker to ensure that the foe does not use a Pokemon with Rapid Spin to eliminate your precious entry hazards. Golurk and Spiritomb are two very good options, as in addition to being bulky, the two can use their good offensive stats to threaten foes. If you wish to use an even bulkier spinblocker, then Eviolite Dusclops is your Pokemon. However, it must be noted that both Dusclops and Smeargle are completely shut down by Taunt. Smeargle also has a ton of alternate moves it can use on the fourth moveslot of this set. For example, you can run Toxic Spikes along with Spikes to destroy walls, Encore to prevent Smeargle from becoming setup bait, or Taunt to prevent Pokemon from phazing Smeargle out with Roar or Whirlwind.

Baton Passing has long been regarded as Smeargle's signature role, and it pulls off its specialty with aplomb in Ubers. The raw power of the Ubers metagame makes Baton Pass chains difficult to use and rather impractical, but this generation Smeargle has a new toy that takes advantage of that same raw power: Shell Smash. With a Focus Sash equipped, Smeargle is nearly guaranteed to get off a Shell Smash safely, especially with the aid of the much-coveted Spore, which is what sets it apart from Baton Pass Gorebyss. Putting a slower opponent to sleep, such as support Groudon, allows Smeargle to boost up with its Focus Sash still intact, giving you complete control. It is highly recommended in most cases to use Shell Smash before Spore, as this makes dealing with Smeargle far more difficult. Magic Coat is useful for its ability to turn Roar, Whirlwind, and Taunt back on the user, also allowing Smeargle to "steal" entry hazards from the opponent; this makes the Baton Pass recipient even more difficult to stop. Ingrain blocks phazing attempts altogether and also provides recovery for the recipient, making wearing down the recipient a daunting task. Taunt is also usable, and while it is not as effective as Magic Coat, it does require less prediction to use. A Jolly nature and full investment in Speed are vital for Smeargle, as they allow it to outspeed a larger range of opponents, something that is crucial for its role. Because Ubers is an incredibly powerful metagame, there are very few moves Smeargle can survive, should its Focus Sash be broken before it has an opportunity to use Shell Smash. The remaining EVs are all placed in Defense, allowing Smeargle to survive Giratina-O's Dragon Tail even after switching into Stealth Rock or Spikes. It should be noted that if keeping the opponents' entry hazards out of play is not feasible, Smeargle should be led with or brought in on the turn that the opponent uses an entry hazard move, allowing it to keep its Focus Sash intact. Keep in mind that the latter scenario is extremely risky. Teammates should be the most important concern when using Smeargle. Pokemon that can make great use of the boosts they receive, such as mixed Dialga or Zekrom, are the best partners for this set. Priority moves, especially Extreme Speed, are the biggest danger to the recipients, so recipients that shrug off most forms of priority, notably Dialga and Giratina-O, are the most difficult to take down. The immunity to Toxic Spikes both have is also an excellent asset. The defense drops of Shell Smash are a hazard for recipients, so having them hold a White Herb is an option, although the raw power of a Life Orb is usually better for Pokemon that do not fear priority. If the opponent lacks priority, then powerful, frail Pokemon such as Mewtwo and Rayquaza make deadly recipients. Quiver Dance and Tail Glow are also excellent moves to pass to powerful special attackers such as Kyogre. Belly Drum is another option, but Smeargle is too slow to safely use the move, and Belly Drum's cost renders the Focus Sash useless, making it impractical.

Although Lv. 1 Solosis fills this niche better in most ways due to Magic Guard, Smeargle's access to Spore is all it needs to make it a viable alternative. This set's primary aim is to get up Trick Room, and then if possible take something down with it. Spore nearly guarantees a free use of either Trick Room or Endeavor, depending on when it is used. Endeavor does an excellent job at crippling opponents even when Smeargle is at full health, as its HP at Lv. 1 is so low that most Pokemon commonly used in Ubers will die to residual damage when left with that amount. Dragon Rage can be used to finish off any Pokemon that has been hit by Endeavor, but Destiny Bond almost guarantees a kill, and is Smeargle's only option against Giratina-O. This set can only really work on a full Trick Room team, and Smeargle's teammates should be capable of abusing Trick Room; common Trick Room users such as Dialga and Palkia are thus highly recommended. Toxic Spikes support can help Smeargle nab kills with Endeavor, but poisoned opponents aren't affected by Spore, making this a risky option. Extreme Speed is also an option in the last moveslot. In the unlikely situation that Smeargle has used Endeavor on the last turn of Trick Room, Extreme Speed can be used to finish off the opponent, assuming it isn't carrying Leftovers. This set absolutely hates entry hazards, so unless Rapid Spin support is provided it is best to use it as the team's lead.

With Smeargle's massive movepool and somewhat acceptable Speed, it can pull off a lead set to great effect. Fake Out flinches your opponent, giving your teammate a chance to set up a Tailwind or Trick Room, or take out an opponent before it can threaten your team. In addition to letting it outpace Pokemon such as Tyranitar and Metagross, Smeargle's base 75 Speed also makes it the fastest user of Spore in the entire game, letting it take out Trick Room users. Follow Me draws attacks away from Smeargle's partner, giving it time to attack the opponent. Helping Hand can help Smeargle boost the power of its partner's attacks by 50%, which can be the difference between KOing the opponent or having it survive. The last slot depends on what Smeargle needs to accomplish. With Taunt, Smeargle can stop slower support Pokemon such as Cresselia and Musharna. However, they commonly run Mental Herb, which takes away the guarantee that Taunt stops them. Encore locks the opponent into moves such as Protect, making prediction easier. With Smeargle's horrible defenses, a Focus Sash is a great item for it, as it lets Smeargle survive at least one attack. If a teammate is already holding a Focus Sash, Mental Herb is an option, allowing Smeargle to break through Taunt and Spore the opponent. The EVs allow Smeargle to outspeed and Spore Hitmontop, Metagross, Tyranitar, and Mamoswine. Smeargle has two abilities it can use. Own Tempo prevents confusion, which can be useful against an opponent that uses Confuse Ray or Teeter Dance. Moody can make Smeargle harder to KO and can double its Speed, letting it outrun Pokemon such as Latios and Terrakion. Just be aware that Moody has a chance to reduce Smeargle's Speed instead, allowing the base 70 Speed Pokemon it could otherwise outrun to now outspeed it. The best teammates for Smeargle are Pokemon that set up, such as Quiver Dance Volcarona or Dragon Dance Haxorus. Frail sweepers that can't take a hit, such as Weavile and Zoroark, also work well with Smeargle.

This set is very useful in Ubers and OU, and can be successful in VGC 2012 as well. One thing that sets this variant of Smeargle apart from Lv. 1 Whimsicott is Spore, which must be used on this set. Unless double targeted or Taunted, Smeargle will always get Trick Room up, making it an excellent supporter for a Trick Room team. Endeavor brings the foe to low HP, making it easier to take out instantly or later on in the battle. Feint breaks Protect and is exceptionally useful in Trick Room, as most opponents will try to stall out Trick Room with Protect. However, Destiny Bond can be used to take out an opponent when Smeargle has done its job. Focus Sash is necessary for this set to work, as Lv. 1 Smeargle will otherwise be unable to survive any direct attack. Moves such as Dragon Rage or ExtremeSpeed also work with this set, as after Smeargle uses Endeavor on the opponent, it can KO the foe with priority, or use Dragon Rage to guarantee the KO even after Leftovers. This set requires a large amount of team support to function well. Fake Out users, such as Hariyama and Scrafty, can flinch an opponent to stop Smeargle from being double targeted or Taunted that turn. Pokemon that use Rage Powder or Follow Me make great teammates as well, as they protect Smeargle by redirecting incoming attacks to themselves. Togekiss or Amoonguss make fine choices here, as both have decent amount of bulk to survive attacks.

Set Details Level 1 Smeargle aims to allow an ally like Bronzong to easily set Trick Room through disruptive means while being as slow as possible under Trick Room, thanks to it being level 1. Smeargle is so frail that it typically never avoids 2HKOs when holding the Focus Sash, so not much is left behind when opting for level 1 aside from Speed. Smeargle often is more than happy to sacrifice itself to allow Trick Room to be set up, allowing a Trick Room sweeper to take its place and maximize the amount of turns it can spend within Trick Room. Since Smeargle's HP at level 1 is so low, Endeavor can be used to bring foes down to extremely low health, allowing allies like Bronzong to easily clean up. Dark Void puts both foes to sleep and is extremely strong in Trick Room, as Smeargle will always be moving first. Detect is an alternative option to Dark Void that may allow Smeargle to survive the first turn as its ally sets up Trick Room and then threaten Endeavor under Trick Room. Follow Me and Fake Out are Smeargle's tools to allow Trick Room to be set up easily. Fake Out can be used into a Pokemon that would normally deny Trick Room, namely Taunt users like Gyarados. Follow Me is able to redirect any attacks that threaten Trick Room setters while also redirecting opposing Fake Out, ensuring that Trick Room goes up no matter what. Focus Sash is absolutely necessary due to level 1 Smeargle being OHKOed by any move that it is not immune to. Smeargle's HP and Speed are as low as possible to ensure that not only is it as slow as possible, but so that Endeavor brings foes to as low of HP as possible. Teambuilding Level 1 Smeargle belongs specifically on teams that have their main focus on Trick Room; otherwise, level 50 Smeargle would be better thanks to its far higher Speed. Trick Room setters like Cresselia and Bronzong heavily appreciate its ability to use Fake Out and Follow Me to allow them to easily set up Trick Room, while setup sweepers in Trick Room like Snorlax appreciate its ability to redirect attacks or put foes to sleep, making setting up far safer and easier. While Smeargle is able to circumvent many of the ways to deny Trick Room—Taunt, Fake Out, raw power, and some more—it cannot stop Imprison from the likes of Mismagius and Dusknoir, both of which can run both Imprison and Trick Room to ensure that Trick Room never gets set up. Priority attackers such as Scizor, Metagross, and even just Fake Out Pokemon like Infernape are troublesome for Smeargle, as they can move before Smeargle even in Trick Room, easily 2HKOing it thanks to Focus Sash. Spread attackers like Rhyperior are also troublesome, ignoring Follow Me entirely. Ghost-types like Gengar are able to ignore Endeavor, making Smeargle relatively easy to ignore. Gengar also carries Taunt and is immune to Fake Out, making it very easy for Gengar to thwart Smeargle's plans. Trick Room setters like Bronzong are absolutely necessary partners for Smeargle, as it only works alongside those. Bronzong in particular is able to sit in front of the Bullet Punch duo of Scizor and Metagross, as it resists most of their attacks and can put them to sleep with Hypnosis. Additionally, when inside Trick Room, it can threaten Mismagius and Gengar with powerful Gyro Ball. Cresselia is a less common option but fares well into Gengar and Infernape, hitting them with Psychic. Allies like Rhyperior can take advantage of Trick Room while dealing good damage to Bullet Punch Scizor and Metagross, as well as Fake Out users like Infernape. Snorlax is able to use Belly Drum and sweep, taking great advantage of Smeargle's tools in that regard. Metagross is a versatile Pokemon that can reduce its Speed with Hammer Arm to operate in Trick Room, while the likes of Machamp and Spiritomb are more niche options that can threaten the Ghost-types like Gengar, Mismagius, and Dusknoir that annoy Smeargle with Payback and Sucker Punch, respectively. Spiritomb in particular can also set up Trick Room itself.
